A new method for preparation of ultrafine emulsions was developed. The ultrafine emulsions can be obtained easily by rapid cooling of the high temperature microemulsions, i.e., the swollen micellar solutions in the oil-water-nonionic surfactant systems, to room temperature. They are the thermodynamically unstable dispersions of which the mean droplet diameters are bellow 100nm, and look like so-called microemulsions, i.e., transparent or translucent. The droplet diameter was related to the ratio of oil to surfactant by a linear function. The droplet size of the ultrafine emulsions can thus be controlled by changing this ratio.The stability of the ultrafine emulsions depends on the chemical nature of the oil and surfactant. The stability rises dramatically with increase in the carbon number of the oil, and decreases with increase in the polarity of the oil. The droplets of the liquid paraffin (Lp) and squalane (Sq) ultrafine emulsions do not practically change in size for over a year at 25°C. The addition of small quantities of a long-chain alkane to the disperse phase can have a profound effect on ultrafine emulshion stability. The unstable ultrafine emulsions of short-chain alkanes such as dodecane can be stabilized by added Lp or Sq. The results suggest that the main cause of instability in the ultrafine emulsions may be molecular diffusion (Ostwald ripening) rather than droplet coalesence. The stability of the ultrafine emulsions increases with the size of the surfactant molecule.The ultrafine emulsions were prepared by using the commercial materials for the purpose of applying to the products of cosmetics. The transparent or translucent lotions containing oil components were obtained by using small quantities of the surfactants, and were very stable. Since this method can keep the droplet size under precise controll, the turbidity of the products can be controlled easily.

Preparation of optically active α-hydroxy ketone derivatives by Enzyme-Mediated Hydrolysis of Enol Esters

A new method of preparation of optically active α-hydroxy ketone derivatives has been developed. Incubation of ( Z)-3-propionyloxy-4-benzyloxy-2-pentene ( 1a) with lipase OF gave optically pure ( R)-enol propionate 1a, which in turn was convened without racemization to ( R)-ketone 2a by the aid of LiAlH 4.

Chemo-Enzymatic Synthesis of 13-S-Hydroxyoctadecadienoic Acid (13-S-HODE)

A new method of preparation of optically active 13-S-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (13-HODE) is described. The key chemical step involves the coupling of methyl Z-10-iododec-9-enoate and tri-n-butyl(3(S)-dimethyl-tert-butylsilyloxy)-oct-l-enylstannane using a palladium (II) catalyst. The stannane is readily prepared from 3(S)-oct-l-yn-3-ol and various methods of producing this optically active material are described. In particular the enantioselective hydrolysis of (±)-3-acyloxyoct-l-ynes using an isolated enzyme is reported and this work is compared with results obtained using a whole cell system. Using the lipase from Mucor miehei a small advantage (in terms of the rate of the hydrolysis and the enantioselectivity of the process) is gained by using a chloroalkanoate instead of the corresponding ester possessing an isosteric methyl group in place of the halogen atom. Preparation of the Porous Supports With SiO2-ZrO2-Na2O Composition.

ABSTRACTA new method for preparation of porous mixed oxide with SiO2 -ZrO2 -Na2O composition was investigated by heating the sol-gel derived SiO2 microsphere gel in the presence of ZrOCl2 and NaCI. Surface of the -products was composed of sponge-like structure, similar to the porous glasses manufactured by the phase separation method. Their pore volumes ranged from 1.0 to 1.5 cc/g(pore radius 100–lO00Å) and their pore distributions were sharp, with peak tops of about 450–600Å in radius.

Abstract A new crossed coupling reaction of α,β-unsaturated nitriles with aldehydes was performed by using phenylsilane and a catalytic amount of bis(1,3-diketonato)cobalt(II) to give β-siloxy nitriles in good yields. Similarly, α,β-unsaturated amides and esters also reacted under the same conditions to afford β-siloxy amides or esters. The present reaction provides a new and facile method for preparation of β-hydroxy nitriles, amides, and esters.

New unsupported [100]-oriented MoO 3 catalysts : I. Preparation and characterization

In the general frame of the structure-sensitive character of the oxidation reactions of olefins and alcohols on oxide catalysts, a new method of preparation of unsupported, [100]-oriented, MoO 3 catalysts is described. Diffraction techniques and SEM observations showed that the oxidation of Mo sheets leads to MoO 3 oxide plates with a preferential [100]orientation of the crystallites, this feature being most likely in relation with the special texture of the starting material. Moreover, evidence is presented that MoO 3 (100) planes, which are believed to be active in the mild oxidation of olefins, are actually truncated to (110), (120), or (130) surface planes. A structural model indicates that such (1k0) planes should have a dual-site character and the consequences have been discussed in relation with the mechanism of the mild oxidation of propene on MoO 3 catalysts.

Abstract In the presence of a catalytic amount of bis(acetylacetonato)cobalt(II), various olefins react smoothly with molecular oxygen and phenylsilane at room temperature to afford the corresponding alcohols in good yields under neutral conditions.

On the preparation of cross-sectional TEM samples using lithographic processing and reactive ion-etching

Preparation of cross-sectional TEM samples has been completed without use of the normal means of mechanical polishing and ion-milling. Instead, lithographic processing and reactive ion-etching (RIE) were used to define thin walls ranging from 100 to 1000 nm in width which protruded 1 μm from the substrate surface. The substrate was cut into pieces suitable for securing them into a standard double-tilt holder so that the etched walls were exposed to the electron beam and images could be formed. Samples have been made using both electron beam and optical lithography with different dry etching processes to define thin walls of composite layers of Si, Si 3N 4 and SiO 2 and also a thin film of Al-Cu(2 wt%). The results present a promising new method for preparation of cross-sectional TEM samples that is less labor-intensive and more productive than mechanical polishing and ion-milling.

A new method for preparation of undecalcified bone sections.

A new method for preparation of sections of undecalcified bone is described. Samples of ovine bone were embedded in methylmethacrylate and thick-sectioned with a cutoff machine or commercial band saw. Composite slides were prepared by gluing white acrylic to glass using cyanoacrylate glue. Bone sections were glued to the composite slide and then surface polished by grinding or ultramilling. The polished surface of the section was then etched and stained. The techniques described in this paper reduce the time spent grinding or milling sections and improve resolution of surface-stained features of undecalcified bone sections.

New synthesis and uses of high-specific-surface SiC as a catalytic support that is chemically inert and has high thermal resistance

A new method for preparation of high-specific-surface (60–400 m 2/g) SiC is described. This method consists of the attack of high-specific-surface activated carbon by SiO vapor generated by the high-temperature reaction of Si and SiO 2. The high specific surface is probably due both to the low temperature of the reaction between SiO and C and to the presence of a stable carbon skeleton. Before reaction, the carbon can be doped with different additives to improve the surface interaction between SiC and the impregnated active phase. The action of uranium doping is also shown. SEM, XRD, thermogravimetry, TPR, XPS, BET, and porosimetry have been used to characterize the supports and the catalysts. Test reactions (hydrodesulfurization by CoMo) are also reported.

Chemistry of Germanium Atoms. IV. A New Method for Preparation of Organogermanium Halides by Co-condensation of Germanium Vapor with Tetrahydrofuran

Abstract Germanium vapor (atom) when co-condensated with THF at 77 K was found to be reactive toward organic halides. Several organogermanium halides were prepared by the addition of organic halides to the resultant germanium atom-THF slurry at ambient temperatures.

Asymmetric induction reactions. III. Palladium-catalyzed asymmetric sulfonylations of allylic sulfinates and acetates with chiral phosphine ligands.

Treatment of allylic (±)-p-toluenesulfinate with tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium in the presence of chiral phosphine ligands resulted in allylic sulfinate-sulfone rearrangements to give the corresponding optically active allylic sulfones in high optical yields. The palldium-catalyzed reactions of readily obtainable allylic acetates with sodium p-toluenesulfinate in the presence of chiral phosphine ligands provide a new method for preparation of optically active allylic sulfones with high enantiomeric excess.
