Superdeformed nuclear matter in nuclei with $Z \ge 82$ : Magnetic properties and neutron shell gap

We report the results of an experiment, realized with the EUROBALL IV spectrometer, in which superdeformed (SD) states have been populated in 197,198Pb nuclei. Crosstalk transitions between two signature partner SD bands in 197Pb have been observed with an established M1 character, giving access to the magnetic properties of the \(\nu\)[752]5/2 intruder orbital. Six new SD bands have been identified in 197,198Pb. The results are interpreted in the framework of cranked Hartree-Fock calculations. A mixing between quasi-particle excitations and an octupole vibration is suggested in the two SD isotopes.

New approaches to studies of exotic nuclei

New generations of 4π gamma-ray detectors, recoil mass spectrometers (RMS), and radioactive beam accelerators will open up many new areas of research, including presently inaccessible in-beam and radioactive decay studies of exotic nuclei still farther off stability. The new generation RMS and radioactive beam developments at the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility are presented. Current research and future prospects to probe the N = Z line up to 100Sn are described. Superdeformation in A = 70 to 190 nuclei is described in terms of its underlying physics of reinforcing proton and neutron shell gaps which lead to new superdeformed, doubly-magic nuclei. Recent results provide new insights into the coexistence of multiple nuclear shapes near the ground states.

Gd8264146, a doubly magic nucleus

Single proton and neutron states are extrapolated from the recently revised shell model states of $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ with the help of optimized Woods-Saxon potentials. A proton magic gap of 2.3 MeV at $Z=64$ and a neutron magic gap of 4.5 MeV at $N=82$ are established at mass number $A=146$.NUCLEAR STRUCTURE $^{146}\mathrm{Gd}$, estimates of proton and neutron shell gaps.
