Universality and the weak neutral current

We consider the possibility that the weak neutral current displays both muon-electron and quark-lepton universality. Such a model contains three parameters which we determine, within limits, from existing data on deep inelastic scattering of neutrinos off nucleons and elastic scattering of neutrinos off leptons. We show that such a model is consistent with other results on elastic neutrino-nucleon scattering and neutrino-induced production of single pions.

Electromagnetic interaction of neutrinos in gauge theories of weak interactions

The scattering of neutrinos off real or virtual photons is examined in the gauge theories of weak interactions. Finite amplitudes of orderGα are calculated in the fourth-order perturbation for various models.

Coherent Neutrino Scattering and Stellar Collapse

Freedman has shown that coherency and the neutral current theory of neutrinos imply a scattering cross section for neutrinos off heavy nuclei proportional to the square of the atomic weight. The collapse of an iron-core star produces a hot neutron star surrounded by a thin iron layer. Because of the large scattering rate in the outer layer, neutrinos from the hot neutron core are able to accelerate the iron layer to above escape velocity.

Applications of Current Commutation Relations to Muon Capture and Neutrino (Antineutrino) Reactions in Nuclei

Relations among total muon-capture rates in nuclei and the equal-time commutators of the space and time components of the strangeness-conserving weak hadron current are derived. Using the quark field algebra and the closure approximation, this relation yields a total muon-capture rate in ${\mathrm{He}}^{3}$ of $\ensuremath{\Gamma}({\mathrm{He}}^{3})\ensuremath{\approx}2.36\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}$ ${\mathrm{sec}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, in very good agreement with experiment. We demonstrate that application of the gauge field algebra to our relations does not yield a result that can be compared with experiment, since we cannot justify the use of the closure approximation in the context of this algebra. Using the quark field algebra and the closure approximation, similar relations are also derived for the total elastic differential cross section for forward scattering of neutrinos off nuclei.
