Experimental and theoretical multichannel study of direct nuclear reactions: A tool to provide data driven information on neutrino-less double-beta decay

The search for neutrino-less double beta decay has attracted much interest in the last years due to the extraordinary consequences that could derive from its observation. In the view to provide experimental information on the nuclear matrix elements involved in the expression of neutrino-less double beta decay half-life, the NUMEN project is measuring cross-sections of double charge exchange and other quasi-elastic nuclear reactions using the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. In particular, the newly proposed multichannel approach, applied both to the experimental and theoretical analysis, will be discussed.

New high intensity Heavy - Ion beams @ INFN-LNS: NUMEN project status and perspective

The upgrade project POTLNS to produce high-intensity beams has already started at INFN- Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania (Italy). The POTLNS project was triggered by the NUMEN physics case that aims to provide experimental information on the Nuclear Matrix Elements (NMEs) that enter in the expression of the neutrino-less double beta (0νββ) decay half-life. The tools proposed by NUMEN project are the cross-section measurements of nuclear Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. The search for 0νββ decay is currently a key topic in physics, due to its possible wide implications for nuclear physics, particle physics and cosmology: the NUMEN project could provide a crucial contribution in this search.

Final Result on the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of ^{82}Se with CUPID-0.

CUPID-0, an array of Zn^{82}Se cryogenic calorimeters, was the first medium-scale demonstrator of the scintillating bolometers' technology. The first project phase (March 2017-December 2018) allowed the most stringent limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of the isotope of interest, ^{82}Se, to be set. After a six month long detector upgrade, CUPID-0 began its second and last phase (June 2019-February 2020). In this Letter, we describe the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of ^{82}Se with a total exposure (phase I+II) of 8.82 kg yr^{-1} of isotope. We set a limit on the half-life of ^{82}Se to the ground state of ^{82}Kr of T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{82}Se)>4.6×10^{24} yr (90% credible interval), corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass m_{ββ}<(263-545) meV. We also set the most stringent lower limits on the neutrinoless decays of ^{82}Se to the 0_{1}^{+}, 2_{1}^{+}, and 2_{2}^{+} excited states of ^{82}Kr, finding 1.8×10^{23} yr, 3.0×10^{23} yr, and 3.2×10^{23} yr (90% credible interval) respectively.

A focus on selected perspectives of the NUMEN project

The use of double charge exchange reactions is discussed in view of their application to extract information that may be helpful to determinate the nuclear matrix elements entering in the expression of neutrinoless double beta decay half-life. The strategy adopted in the experimental campaigns performed at INFN - Laboratori Nazionali del Sud and in the analysis methods within the NUMEN project is briefly described, emphasizing the advantages of the multi-channel approach to nuclear reaction data analysis. An overview on the research and development activities on the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer is also given, with a focus on the chosen technological solutions for the focal plane detector which will guarantee the performances at high-rate conditions.

On the MSW-like neutrino mixing effects in atomic weak interactions and double beta decays

Matter effects on the mixing of the neutrinos mass eigenstates, also known as the Mikheyev–Smirnov–Wolfenstein effect, seem to be well established in describing the propagation of the neutrino from the source to detecting devices. These effects were mostly considered in bulk matter, but not inside the atoms. Here we consider the effect of the high electron densities existing in the atomic nuclei. We investigate if these effects can affect the known neutrino phenomenology. It was reported that the mixing of the neutrinos in high density matter, such as inside a supernova, can affect the Majoron decay probabilities. We investigate if the neutrino mixing effects in the high electron density inside the atomic nuclei can change the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life formula. In both cases we found that the standard results stand. The results look simple, but the road to them is complex and it opens the possibility that the neutrino mixing in atomic nuclei may affect other observables, such as the neutrinoless double beta Majoron decays.

Scintillation balloon for liquid scintillator base Neutrinoless double beta decay search experiments

A liquid scintillator base experiment KamLAND-Zen has set a lower limit on neutrinoless double beta decay half-life, and upgrade project KamLAND-Zen 800 has started in 2019. Unfortunately this project expects some backgrounds, and one of the main backgrounds is β/γ-ray from 214Bi in container of xenon loaded liquid scintillator (mini-balloon). In order to reject the background, we suggest using scintillation film for the future mini-balloon. If we can tag α-ray from 214Po by scintillation detection, we can eliminate 214Bi events by delayed coincidence analysis.Recently, it was reported that polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) can be used as a scintillator with blue photon emission. PEN has chemical compatibility for strong solvent, thus it has a possibility to use in liquid scintillator. In this presentation, we will mention the results for feasibility studies about transparency and emission spectra, light yield, radioactivity, strength of film etc.. We also show the test-sized scintillation balloon with an 800-mm diameter and discussions about how to use the scintillation balloon in KamLAND.

Search for neutrinoless double- β decay in Ge76 with 26 kg yr of exposure from the Majorana Demonstrator

The MAJORANA Collaboration is operating an array of high purity Ge detectors to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{76}$Ge. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR consists of 44.1 kg of Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched to 88% in $^{76}$Ge) split between two modules constructed from ultra-clean materials. Both modules are contained in a low-background shield at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. We present updated results on the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{76}$Ge with $26.0\pm0.5$ kg-yr of enriched exposure. With the DEMONSTRATOR's unprecedented energy resolution of 2.53 keV FWHM at $Q_{\beta\beta}$, we observe one event in the region of interest with 0.65 events expected from the estimated background, resulting in a lower limit on the $^{76}$Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of $2.7\times10^{25}$ yr (90% CL) with a median sensitivity of $4.8\times10^{25}$ yr (90% CL). Depending on the matrix elements used, a 90% CL upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 200-433 meV is obtained. The measured background in the low-background configurations is $11.9\pm2.0$ counts/(FWHM t yr).

Recent results on heavy-ion induced reactions of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay at INFN-LNS

The possibility to use a special class of heavy-ion induced direct reactions, such as double charge exchange reactions, is discussed in view of their application to extract information that may be helpful to determinate the nuclear matrix elements entering in the expression of neutrinoless double beta decay half-life. The methodology of the experimental campaign presently running at INFN - Laboratori Nazionali del Sud is reported andthe experimental challenges characterizing such activity are described.

Short-range neutrinoless double beta decay mechanisms

Neutrinoless double beta decay can significantly help to shed light on the issue of non-zero neutrino mass, as observation of this lepton number violating process would imply neutrinos are Majorana particles. However, the underlying interaction does not have to be as simple as the standard neutrino mass mechanism. The entire variety of neutrinoless double beta decay mechanisms can be approached effectively. In this work we focus on a theoretical description of short-range effective contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay, which are equivalent to 9-dimensional effective operators incorporating the appropriate field content. We give a detailed derivation of the nuclear matrix elements and phase space factors corresponding to individual terms of the effective Lagrangian. Using these, we provide general formulae for the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life and angular correlation of the outgoing electrons.

Interpolating formula for the 0νββ -decay half-life in the case of light and heavy neutrino mass mechanisms

We revisit the "interpolating formula" proposed in our previous publication. It allows one to calculate the neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$-decay) half-life for arbitrary neutrino mass without involvement of the complicated results for nuclear matrix elements (NME) obtained within specific nuclear structure models. The formula derives from the finding that the value of a properly normalized ratio of the NMEs for the light and heavy neutrino mass mechanisms weakly depends on isotope. From this fact it follows, in particular, that the light and heavy neutrino mass mechanisms can hardly be distinguished in a model independent way searching for $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay of different nuclei. Here we show that this formula holds for all the known nuclear structure approaches. We give a mathematical justification of our results examining analytical properties of the NMEs. We also consider several simplified benchmark scenarios within left-right symmetric models and analyze the conditions for the dominance of the light or heavy neutrino mass mechanisms in $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay.

Physics capabilities of the SNO+ experiment

SNO+ will soon enter its first phase of physics data-taking. The Canadian-based detector forms part of the SNOLAB underground facility, in a Sudbury nickel mine; its location providing more than two kilometres of rock overburden. We present an overview of the SNO+ experiment and its physics capabilities. Our primary goal is the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay, where our expected sensitivity would place an upper limit of 1.9 × 1026 y, at 90% CL, on the half-life of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130Te. We also intend to build on the success of SNO by studying the solar neutrino spectrum. In the unloaded scintillator phase SNO+ has the ability to make precision measurements of the fluxes of low-energy pep neutrinos and neutrinos from the CNO cycle. Other physics goals include: determining the spectrum of reactor antineutrinos, to further constrain ; detecting neutrinos produced by a galactic supernova and investigating certain modes of nucleon decay.

The SuperNEMO calorimeter

The SuperNEMO double beta decay project is a modular tracker-calorimeter experiment that will reach a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of ∼ 1026 years, corresponding to a Majorana neutrino mass of 50-100 meV. The main calorimeter is based on 440 Optical Modules made of large volume plastic scintillators (10L) coupled with large area photomultipliers (Hamamatsu R5912-Mod). They are assembled in walls surrounding the isotope foil and the tracking volume. One of the main challenges of the SuperNEMO detector development programme was to reach an energy resolution, better than 8%(FWHM) at 1 MeV. The other challenge was to satisfy the radiopurity requirements for all the calorimeter materials. The calorimeter design of the first SuperNEMO module is presented as well as its performances and the status of its construction under way in the Modane underground laboratory.

Development of an optical simulation for the SuperNEMO calorimeter

The SuperNEMO double beta decay project is a modular tracker-calorimeter based experiment. The aim of this project is to reach a sensitivity of the order of 1026 years concerning the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life, corresponding to a Majorana neutrino mass of 50-100 meV. The main calorimeter of the SuperNEMO demonstrator is based on 520 Optical Modules made of large volume plastic scintillators (10L) coupled with large area photomultipliers (Hamamatsu R5912-MOD and R6594). The design of the calorimeter is optimized for the double beta decay detection and allows gamma tagging for background rejection. In large volumes of scintillators, a similar deposited energy by electrons or photons will give different visible energy and signal shapes due to different interactions inside the scintillator. The aim of the optical simulation, developed for SuperNEMO, is to model the Optical Module response on the energy and time performances, regarding the particle type.

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay and Lepton Flavour Violation in Broken μ − τ Symmetric Neutrino Mass Models

We have studied neutrinoless double beta decay and charged lepton flavour violation in broken $\mu-\tau$ symmetric neutrino masses in a generic left-right symmetric model (LRSM). The leading order $\mu-\tau$ symmetric mass matrix originates from the type I (II) seesaw mechanism, whereas the perturbations to $\mu-\tau$ symmetry in order for generation of non-zero reactor mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, as required by latest neutrino oscillation data, originates from the type II (I) seesaw mechanism. In our work, we considered four different realizations of $\mu-\tau$ symmetry, viz. Tribimaximal Mixing (TBM), Bimaximal Mixing (BM), Hexagonal Mixing (HM) and Golden Ratio Mixing (GRM). We then studied the new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) ignoring the left-right gauge boson mixing and the heavy-light neutrino mixing within the framework of LRSM. We have considered the mass of the gauge bosons and scalars to be around TeV and studied the effects of the new physics contributions on the effective mass and the NDBD half life and compared with the current experimental limit imposed by KamLAND-Zen. We further extended our analysis by correlating the lepton flavour violation of the decay processes, $\left(\mu\rightarrow 3e\right)$ and $\left(\mu\rightarrow e\gamma\right)$ with the lightest neutrino mass and atmospheric mixing angle $\theta_{23}$ respectively.

Charged lepton flavour violcxmation and neutrinoless double beta decay in left-right symmetric models with type I+II seesaw

We study the new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta \beta$) half-life and lepton flavour violation (LFV) amplitude within the framework of the minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRSM). Considering all possible new physics contributions to $0\nu\beta \beta$ and charged lepton flavour violation $\mu \rightarrow e \gamma, \mu \rightarrow 3e$ in MLRSM, we constrain the parameter space of the model from the requirement of satisfying existing experimental bounds. Assuming the breaking scale of the left-right symmetry to be $\mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV accessible at ongoing and near future collider experiments, we consider the most general type I+II seesaw mechanism for the origin of tiny neutrino masses. Choosing the relative contribution of the type II seesaw term allows us to calculate the right handed neutrino mass matrix as well as Dirac neutrino mass matrix as a function of the model parameters, required for the calculation of $0\nu\beta \beta$ and LFV amplitudes. We show that such a general type I+II seesaw structure results in more allowed parameter space compared to individual type I or type II seesaw cases considered in earlier works. In particular, we show that the doubly charged scalar masses $M_{\Delta}$ are allowed to be smaller than the heaviest right handed neutrino mass $M_N$ from the present experimental bounds in these scenarios which is in contrast to earlier results with individual type I or type II seesaw showing $M_{\Delta} > M_N$.

Latest results from KamLAND-Zen second phase

We report on preliminary results from the second phase of KamLAND-Zen double beta decay search experiment based on 114.8 days with 383 kg of 136Xe. Second phase of KamLAND-Zen was started after the purification to reduce the dominant 110mAg background identified by first phase data. The background was reduced by more than a factor of 10 by purification for liquid scintillator and xenon gas. By combining the first and second phase data and applying the improved event selection, we obtained a preliminary lower limit for the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life, T1/20ν>2.6×1025 yr at 90% C.L. We also present the prospects about current phase of KamLAND-Zen and next phases with upgrades.

CUORE and Beyond: Bolometric Techniques to Explore Inverted Neutrino Mass Hierarchy

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. With 741kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, CUORE will be one of the most competitive neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the horizon. With five years of live time, CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6 × 1026 y at 1σ (9.5 × 1025 y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40–100 meV (50–130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary light detector can significantly improve the search sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors to fully explore the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy with 130Te and possibly other double beta decay candidate nuclei.

Novel Approaches to Calculate Nuclear Matrix Elements for Double Beta Decays

Neutrinoless double beta decay is a unique process that could reveal physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. If observed, it would prove that neutrinos are Majorana particles, and it could give information regarding the neutrino masses and their hierarchy, provided that reliable nuclear matrix elements (NME) can be obtained. The two-neutrino double beta decay is an associate process that is allowed by the Standard Model and it was observed for about ten nuclei. The NME associated with this decay mode could be even more difficult to calculate, but they can be directly related to the experimental half-lives, and they can be constrained using data from charge-exchange reactions. Here we offer a brief overview of the theoretical challenges associated with these two processes, emphasizing the tools necessary to reliably calculate the associated nuclear matrix elements. We also emphasize the role of the competing mechanisms that could contribute to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life.

Shell-Model Analysis of theXe136Double Beta Decay Nuclear Matrix Elements

Neutrinoless double beta decay, if observed, could distinguish whether neutrino is a Dirac or a Majorana particle, and it could be used to determine the absolute scale of the neutrino masses. $^{136}$Xe is one of the most promising candidates for observing this rare event. However, until recently there were no positive result for the allowed and less rare two-neutrino double beta decay mode. The small nuclear matrix element associated with the small half-life represents a challenge for nuclear structure models used for its calculation. We report a new shell-model analysis of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe, which takes into account all relevant nuclear orbitals necessary to fully describe the associated Gamow-Teller strength. We further use the new model to analyze the main contributions to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life, and show that they are also diminished.
