Cost-effectiveness of neuropsychological rehabilitation for acquired brain injuries: Update of Stolwyk etal.'s (2019) review.

Acquired brain injuries (ABI), resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury, cause a range of neuropsychological impairments and many patients continue to experience neuropsychological deficits years after onset. The increasing average age of the population highlights the importance of effective management strategies for the consequences of ABI. Despite the well-documented impact of rehabilitation interventions, the cost-effectiveness of neuropsychological rehabilitation remains largely unknown. This study conducted a scoping review to update the findings of Stolwyk etal. (Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, 2021, 31, 316), focusing on the economic evaluations of neuropsychological rehabilitation for individuals with ABI. Following the PIO framework, PRISMA ScR guidelines, and systematic review reporting checklist, the review screened 1027 articles and included eight studies published between 2019 and 2024. The studies encompassed either language rehabilitation or general neuropsychological programs, including neuropsychological interventions. The economic analyses, including two cost-effectiveness, five cost-utility, and one cost-benefit study, mostly adhered to CHEERS guidelines, enhancing the transparency and methodological rigour of their reporting. These studies demonstrated varying degrees of cost-effectiveness for interventions targeting post-stroke language disorders and neuropsychological rehabilitation for ABI, with significant cost savings and health benefits observed, particularly for home-based rehabilitation interventions. The included studies suffered from a short time horizon, limiting the ability to capture the long-term economic impacts and effectiveness of the interventions. Future research should focus on longer-term follow-up data and include broader search strategies to enhance understanding and optimise health care interventions. A comprehensive implementation of these economic analyses is crucial for informing policymakers, enabling them to introduce rehabilitative interventions based on solid evidence.

What is the nature and impact of cognitive difficulties following hormonal treatments for prostate cancer?: An interpretative phenomenological analysis

ObjectiveProstate cancer hormonal treatments (e.g. androgen deprivation therapy) yield clinical benefits. However, there is increasing evidence these treatments may adversely impact cognitive functioning. This study aimed to qualitatively characterise the nature and impact of cognitive difficulties following these treatments.MethodsProstate cancer survivors (PCS) self-reporting cognitive difficulties following hormonal treatments (via an online survey) and their partners were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews. Telephone or videoconferencing interviews were conducted, then transcribed, double-coded and analysed using the Framework Method, following the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.ResultsEleven participants (six PCS and five partners) were interviewed. PCS reported a range of cognitive difficulties, verified by their partners, including forgetfulness, “fogginess”, fatigue and slowed processing speed. For some PCS, word-finding difficulties, tangential speech and memory problems were apparent during interviews. The aetiology of the reported cognitive difficulties was unclear as it was attributed to a possible combination of cancer treatments, compounding side-effects (e.g. fatigue, sleep problems, hot flashes), exacerbation of pre-existing conditions and/or age-related changes. Cognitive difficulties were reported to have led to shifts in self-perception, interpersonal dynamics and increased emotionality. Engagement in cognitively-stimulating activities and reliance on compensatory strategies were reported to be helpful in managing some cognitive difficulties. All participants endorsed the potential benefits of neuropsychological intervention.ConclusionsThere are a diverse range of cognitive difficulties following hormonal treatments for prostate cancer experienced by PCS and their partners. Understanding the impact of these difficulties is important for the development of targeted neuropsychological interventions.

Episodes of acute methotrexate-related neurotoxicity linked to compromised long-term neurocognitive function.

Methotrexate is a critical component of curative chemotherapy for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), but is associated with neurotoxicity. Information on long-term outcomes following an acute neurotoxic event is limited. Therefore, this report compares neurocognitive performance more than 12months post diagnosis (mean=4years) between ALL patients with (n=25) and without (n=146) a history of acute neurotoxicity. Compared to children with no documented on-treatment neurotoxic event, children who experienced a neurotoxic event during treatment exhibited poorer performance on measures of fine motor function (p=.02) and attention (p=.02). Children with ALL who experience acute neurotoxicity may be candidates for early neuropsychological screening and intervention.

Protocol for the MS-CEBA study: an observational, prospective cohort study identifying Cognitive, Energetic, Behavioural and Affective (CEBA) profiles in Multiple Sclerosis to guide neuropsychological treatment choice

BackgroundNeuropsychological symptoms in the Cognitive, Energetic, Behavioural, and Affective (CEBA) domains are common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and can negatively affect societal participation. The current study aims to investigate whether there are combinations of symptoms in the different CEBA domains that consistently occur together, that is, if there are CEBA profiles that can be identified. If so, this study aims to develop a screening instrument identifying CEBA profiles in PwMS to select the most suitable neuropsychological rehabilitation treatment for a given CEBA profile and consequently improve the societal participation of PwMS.MethodsThis study is an observational, prospective cohort study consisting of 3 phases. Phase 1 focuses on the identification of CEBA profiles in a large sample of PwMS (n = 300). Phase 2 focuses on validating these CEBA profiles through replication of results in a new sample (n = 100) and on the development of the screening instrument. Phase 3 focuses on qualitatively evaluating in a small group of PwMS whether the selected treatment is suitable for the given CEBA profile or whether existing neuropsychological treatments should be adapted to meet the needs of PwMS suffering from symptoms in multiple CEBA domains simultaneously. Primary outcome is the CEBA profile, which will be derived from performance on neuropsychological assessment consisting of tests and questionnaires regarding the CEBA domains using a latent profile analysis. Inclusion criteria include MS diagnosis, sufficient ability in the Dutch language, and an age between 18 and 70 years.DiscussionThe results of the current study will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the entire spectrum of neuropsychological symptoms in PwMS. Identification of possible CEBA profiles, and accordingly, the development of a screening instrument determining the CEBA profile of PwMS in clinical practice, contributes to the timely referral of PwMS to the most suitable neuropsychological rehabilitation treatment. If necessary, adjustments to existing treatments will be suggested in order to sufficiently meet the needs of PwMS. All of this with the ultimate aim to improve societal participation, and thereby quality of life, of PwMS.Trial registrationDutch Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (CCMO) NL83954.042.23; ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06016309.

Effectiveness of the Use of Virtual Reality Rehabilitation in Children with Dyslexia: Follow-Up after One Year.

Dyslexia is a common learning disorder that hinders reading fluency and comprehension. Traditional treatments can be tedious for children, limiting their effectiveness. This study investigated the one-year effects of rehabilitation treatment with a virtual reality rehabilitation system (VRRS) on children with dyslexia. Twenty-four children were divided into control (CG) and experimental (EG) groups. The CG underwent conventional neuropsychological treatment (CNT), while the EG underwent VR neurorehabilitation training (VRNT) using the VRRS. Neuropsychological evaluation was conducted before treatment, after six months, and again after one year for both groups. Compared to the control group, children who received VR training showed significant improvement in reading skills, especially in non-word reading and reading speed, even after one year without further VR intervention. VRRS can improve treatment adherence and minimize symptoms by offering engaging activities for children. These findings suggest VRRS may be a valuable tool for dyslexia rehabilitation with long-lasting effects.

QOL-28. NEUROCOGNITIVE DEFICITS, EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCES, PSYCHOSOMATIC COMPLAINS – ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS OR COMORBID DIAGNOSIS IN CNS GERMINOMA? OVERVIEW OF GROUP AND CASE STUDIES

Abstract BACKGROUND CNS Germinoma cases are associated with good medical prognosis, low risk for neurological deficits and high cognitive functioning. Deeper psychological and neuropsychological examination and longitudinal observation shows also neurocognitive problems and emotional disturbances. The purpose of the study was to assess patients with CNS Germinoma (during and after anticancer treatment), expressed specific psychological and physical symptoms and to find the reason for this. METHODS Since 1998 all patients treated at our center are under psychological control and care. From these group 78 patients with CNS Germinoma with additional significant symptoms, seriously affected their quality of life and everyday activity, were selected for psychological and neuropsychological assessment. Age at psychological intervention ranged from 6 5/12 to 34 8/12 yrs. The patients have no pre-diagnosis history of neurological, developmental or psychiatric disorder. They were examined using a battery of standardized psychological and neuropsychological methods. RESULTS In our sample FIQ (full-scale intelligence quotient) score ranged from 59 to 139. The most patients presented average level of intelligence. However, cognitive functioning was often reduced due to emotional disturbances and psychosomatic complains. 2 patients showed memory disorders, one of them TGA (transient global amnesia) at the time of diagnosis. All patients struggled with emotional disturbances at different grades, especially internalizing type of problems (immaturity, depression, anxiety, instability, inhibition, negative attitude) or were considered to be at risk for psychological adjustment difficulties and tendency to somatization. Analyzed group of patients showed also social competences deficits. They may exhibit deficit in age-appropriate social competence and peers relations. CONCLUSIONS Although CNS Germinoma patients shows similar behavioral and emotional phenotype, there are significant differences between them in terms of cognitive functions. The range of results is wide, from high levels to neurocognitive disorders. Therefore, risk factors, diagnostic criteria and effective neuropsychological intervention, will also be presented and discussed.

Neuropsychological profile of Mexican paediatric patients with pharmacoresistant focal epilepsy

At least 20% of paediatric patients with epilepsy present resistance to multiple anti-crisis drugs in trials, which has a negative impact on their neuropsychological state, quality of life and prognosis; it is therefore necessary to document their neuropsychological profile in order to improve the clinical approach to them. To describe the neuropsychological profile (cognitive, academic, behavioural, emotional, adaptive, sleep disturbances and quality of life) of paediatric patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy in the frontal, temporal and occipital lobes, and to compare performance between patients with frontal and temporal foci, and to assess the link between the duration of the condition, the frequency of seizures and the amount of anti-crisis drugs and the neuropsychological profile. The neuropsychological profile of 19 paediatric patients with a diagnosis of pharmacoresistant epilepsy with a mean age of 10.89 years was evaluated. 57.9% of the 19 patients were men. 63.2% presented frontal focus; 26.3% presented temporal focus; and 10.5% presented occipital focus. Deficiencies in attention, comprehension, verbal memory, working memory and processing speed, in addition to adaptive difficulties were observed. When the patients with frontal and temporal focus were compared, the former were found to present greater deficits in planning, while the patients with temporal focus presented more severe symptoms of anxiety. Patients with a longer disease duration were found to present greater impairment to their intelligence quotient and adaptive behavioural skills. Pharmacoresistant epilepsy in paediatric patients affects intelligence quotient and adaptive skills, as well as attention, memory and executive functions, and neuropsychological intervention programmes must therefore be implemented to improve these patients' quality of life.

Neuropsychology intervention for managing invisible symptoms of MS (NIMIS-MS) group: A pilot effectiveness and acceptability study

BackgroundPeople with MS (pwMS) commonly experience a range of hidden symptoms, including cognitive impairment, anxiety and depression, fatigue, pain, and sensory difficulties. These “invisible” symptoms can significantly impact wellbeing, relationships, employment and life goals. We developed a novel bespoke online group neuropsychological intervention combining psychoeducation and cognitive rehabilitation with an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-informed approach for pwMS in an acute tertiary hospital. This ‘Neuropsychological Intervention for Managing Invisible Symptoms’ in MS (NIMIS-MS) consisted of 6 sessions, each with a psychoeducation and ACT component. The content included psychoeducation around managing cognitive difficulties, fatigue, pain, sleep and other unpleasant sensations in MS with the general approach of understanding, monitoring, and recognising patterns and potential triggers. Specific cognitive rehabilitation and fatigue management strategies were introduced. The ACT-informed component focussed on three core ACT areas of the ‘Triflex’ of psychological flexibility (Harris, 2019): Being Present, Opening Up, and Doing What Matters. Methods118 pwMS attended the NIMIS-MS group intervention which was delivered 14 times in six-week blocks over an 18-month period. To evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability, participants completed measures of depression and anxiety (HADS), functional impairment (WSAS), Values- Progress (VQ) and Values- Obstruction (VQ), and Acceptance of MS (MSAS) pre and post NIMIs-MS group intervention. Qualitative feedback was obtained during focus groups after the final session and via online feedback questionnaires ResultsPre-post analysis showed that symptoms of depression and anxiety were significantly lower and acceptance of MS was significantly higher following completion of the NIMIS-MS group. Qualitative feedback showed that participants reported that they felt more equipped to manage the “invisible” symptoms of MS following completion of the group, and benefited from using ACT-based strategies and techniques. Participants highly valued the peer support that evolved during the NIMIS-MS groups. The online format was considered more accessible than in-person groups, due to less concerns of travel time, cost, fatigue, and comfort and infection. ConclusionEvaluation suggests that our novel NIMIS-MS groups is an acceptable, beneficial and feasible approach for providing neuropsychological interventions to individuals with MS.

Clinical experiences of intervention of neurodevelopmental disorders and difficulties in school learning from historical-cultural neuropsychology

Cultural–historical (CH) neuropsychology proposes the qualitative analysis of neurodevelopmental disorders and learning difficulties through the identification of the neuropsychological factor (NF) that underlies the symptoms and difficulties that arise in cognition and academic performance. The objective of this study is to present clinical experiences of the neuropsychological intervention of unique cases of varying degrees of initial education. Qualitative assessment is a process that reveals the strengths and weaknesses in child development, as well as the possibilities of what children will be able to do for themselves. It assesses their zone of proximal development, not just the zone of current development. Neurodevelopmental and learning disorders present particular manifestations during life, so a qualitative analysis can account for their subtle changes during the course of life and schooling. The use of the principles of intervention constitutes the methodological axis for the elaboration of the programs; these programs will be shaped according to the needs of the children. The case study strengthens the expertise of clinical knowledge by contributing to the empirical field on the possibilities and proposals of neuropsychological intervention.

Psychological interventions for mood and cognition after stroke and transient ischaemic attack: A protocol for an umbrella review.

People who have had a stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) can experience psychological and/or cognitive difficulties. The body of research for psychological and neuropsychological interventions after stroke is growing, however, published systematic reviews vary in scope and methodology, with different types and severity of strokes included, and at times, diverse conclusions drawn about the effectiveness of the interventions evaluated. In this umbrella review, we aim to systematically summarise the existing systematic reviews evaluating psychological interventions for mood and cognition post-stroke/TIA. We will conduct this umbrella review according to the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. The following databases will be searched from inception: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Reviews of Effects (DARE), MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Epistemonikos. Systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis published until the search date will be included. Reviews including psychological interventions addressing mood and/or cognition outcomes for any stroke type or severity will be screened for eligibility. A narrative synthesis, including content analysis, will be used. Each stage of the review will be processed by two independent reviewers and a third reviewer will be considered to resolve disagreements. The methodological quality of the included reviews will be assessed using AMSTAR 2. Existing systematic reviews provide varied evidence on the effectiveness of psychological interventions post-stroke/TIA. This umbrella review aims to summarise knowledge and evidence on different types of psychological and neuropsychological interventions targeting mood and cognition. Findings will highlight important knowledge gaps and help prioritise future research questions. This protocol was prospectively registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) on November 15, 2022; PROSPERO CRD42022375947.

Changes in overlap of subjective and objective cognition over time in epilepsy surgery candidates

PurposeSubjective and objective cognition often show weak overlap in persons with epilepsy (PWE). Over- as well as underestimation may occur. In particular after epilepsy surgery, objective memory decline is often not subjectively reported. Additionally, studies on how concordance of subjective and objective cognition changes over time are missing. Therefore, we study the extent of concordance in operated and non-operated PWE over time. MethodsCandidates for resective epilepsy surgery were assessed between 03/18 and 12/20 (T1) with self-report questionnaires and underwent a neuropsychological examination. For 21 operated as well as 27 non-operated PWE follow-up data was obtained one to three years later (T2). Concordance of attention and memory were compared between groups and time points. Moreover, reliable change was calculated and compared between groups. ResultsOf the total sample, 42 % rated their attention performance realistically and 25 % showed memory concordance. Differences in patterns of over- and underestimation between groups and over time occurred for attention, but not for memory. Overestimation of memory was more frequent in operated than non-operated PWE, especially at T2 (67% vs. 11 %). In the operated group, we mainly observed reliable improvement in subjective cognition and decline in objective memory, whereas non-operated PWE showed more frequently decline of simple attention. Reliable subjective and objective change did not co-occur. ConclusionConcordance of subjective and objective cognition is low. Over- as well as underestimation may persist over time. Domain-specific perspectives are necessary. Tendencies of operated PWE to develop overestimation of memory after surgery should be considered in neuropsychological interventions.

Psychosocial Factors Associated with Cognitive Function in Prostate Cancer Survivors on Hormonal Treatments: A Systematic Review.

Hormonal treatments (HT) for prostate cancer (e.g., androgen deprivation therapy) yield clinical and survival benefits, yet adverse cognitive changes may be a side effect. Since psychosocial factors are largely modifiable, interventions targeting these factors may help mitigate these adverse cognitive effects. This systematic review aimed to identify a range of psychosocial factors associated with cognitive function in individuals with prostate cancer undergoing HT and to determine whether these factors mitigate or exacerbate this effect. Applying PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search of relevant databases conducted in September 2023 using terms related to prostate cancer, hormone therapy, and cognitive outcomes was undertaken. The search yielded 694 unique abstracts, with 11 studies included for analysis examining the relationship between cognitive function and the following psychosocial factors: psychological distress, fatigue, insomnia, and coping processes. Findings were mixed with only two studies reporting significant associations between cognitive performance with fatigue and depression. Three studies that included measures of perceived cognitive function identified associations with depression, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, illness threat appraisals, and coping styles. However, no studies found evidence for an association between self-reported and objective measures of cognitive functioning. Evidence regarding the association of interpersonal factors is lacking. Moreover, whether these factors mitigate or exacerbate the effect of HT on cognitive function still needs to be determined. Overall, the research exploring the association between psychosocial factors and cognitive function in prostate cancer survivors undergoing HT is still in its infancy. Further research is required to optimize the implementation of neuropsychological interventions for prostate cancer survivors.

Pragmatic Communication Deficit and Functional Outcome in Patients with Right- and Left-Brain Damage: A Pilot Study.

Pragmatic communication abilities refer to the capacity to use language in a social context. Despite evidence to the contrary, the left cerebral hemisphere of the majority of right handers has been considered exclusively specialized for control of language phonology, syntax and semantics, whereas the right hemisphere has been specialized for the control of language pragmatics. Many studies have shown the non-exclusivity of the left hemisphere for language skills. Communication deficits observed in these studies for patients with right hemisphere damage confirmed the necessity for integrity of the right hemisphere across a number of language components. The aim of this study is to investigate the specific role of the right and left hemispheres across several aspects of communication deficits, with particular attention given to the influence of these deficits on functional outcome. The second aim is to characterize possible correlations between pragmatic and other cognitive deficits. We evaluated 22 patients, 15 with left- and 7 with right-brain ischemic or hemorrhagic damage, using cognitive, pragmatic and language tests. We deployed the Right Hemisphere Language Battery-Santa Lucia and Montreal d'Evaluation de la Communication to assess pragmatic abilities. The results showed no statistically significant differences between patients with left- and right-brain damage, highlighting the importance of integration between the two hemispheres in the communication process. Multiple significant correlations were found between pragmatic abilities and cognitive tests assessing global cognitive functioning, pantomime expression and comprehension. Pragmatic deficits were also shown to correlate with functional cognitive outcome. It is important to assess pragmatic abilities in patients with cognitive deficits after both left and right stroke for tailoring neuropsychological intervention to mitigate pragmatic disabilities in functional outcomes.

Ecological validity of neuropsychological interventions: A systematic review.

The concept of ecological validity (EV) in neuropsychological interventions (NI) has been consistently advocated, but there is a lack of reviews focused on how EV is operationalized in NI programmes. This review aims to address this gap by exploring the outcome measures more commonly used for assessing EV and to understand the main characteristics of programmes with good EV. A literature search was conducted to identify studies that examined the EV of NI programmes, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the Cochrane Collaboration Guidelines. A total of twenty-seven studies were included in this review. Among these, only three studies explicitly described the procedures used to assess EV. Additionally, almost half of the studies assumed that interventions had good EV based on the characteristics of the programmes. The inconsistent assessment of EV of NI programmes prevented the identification of specific characteristics of programmes demonstrating good EV. This systematic review reveals a significant gap in the literature concerning the operationalization of EV within the field of NI. Further research is required to establish a consistent definition of EV in the context of NI and to develop criteria for its effective operationalization.

Teleneuropsychology intervention in phonological awareness for children with specific learning disorder with reading and mathematical difficulties

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 5–15% of school-aged children worldwide. Often, difficulties in reading (SLD-RD) and mathematics (SLD-MD) occur together. Deficits in phonological awareness (PA) have been identified as the common factor between the two difficulties. Intervention in PA has been shown to be effective in SLD-RD; however, it is not clear whether it is also effective in SLD-MD. Neuropsychological intervention is usually conducted face-to-face, but when the patient is in a remote location or during extraordinary situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic, tele neuropsychology (TeleNP) may be a suitable alternative. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a telerehabilitation program for PA to improve math skills in children with SLD-RD/SLD-MD. The study had an N-of-1 SCED design, and included six children aged 10–12 years with SLD-RD/SLD-MD. After four baseline measurements with an arithmetic verification paradigm, they were treated with TeleNP-PA. The effect on each participant was evaluated using visual analysis and the reliable change index. After the intervention, all participants showed improvement in arithmetic tasks, suggesting that the PA intervention had a positive influence on these skills.

Memory, attention, decision-making, inhibition, and abstract thinking are just some aspects of the effects of stress. Studies show that prolonged or repeated stress can weaken the immune system, increasing inflammation and even destroying neurons in the hippocampus responsible for memory. Maturation of the frontal cortex, which is accompanied by an increase in gray matter volume and the number of synapses, can be disrupted by stress, leading to cognitive decline. Recent research on the impact of stressful situations on psychological and physical health is characterized by a wide range of methodological approaches and a variety of sources. Sapolsky R. highlights the impact of stress on memory-related processes, as well as on the formation of certain parts of the brain. In the work of D. Nakazawa, we get acquainted with neural development and the natural processes associated with this development. Thus, the latest research and publications in the field of stress psychology are an important contribution to our understanding of this complex problem and the development of practical recommendations for overcoming the negative effects of stress. Sleep is crucial for restoring energy and consolidating memory, but it also becomes a victim of stress. Lack of sleep and deterioration in its quality make us more vulnerable to the negative effects of stress. Children who have experienced stress risk losing even more neurons than their peers, as the natural neuronal pruning at puberty can be intensified. Chronic stress can lead to neurotic reactions, psychophysiological symptoms, and psychosomatic illnesses. This emphasizes the importance of nervous system rehabilitation and neuropsychological interventions.

Systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis published until the search date will be included. Reviews including psychological interventions addressing mood and/or cognition outcomes for any stroke type or severity will be screened for eligibility. A narrative synthesis, including content analysis, will be used. Each stage of the review will be processed by two independent reviewers and a third reviewer will be considered to resolve disagreements. The methodological quality of the included reviews will be assessed using AMSTAR 2. Discussion Existing systematic reviews provide varied evidence on the effectiveness of psychological interventions post-stroke/TIA. This umbrella review aims to summarise knowledge and evidence on different types of psychological and neuropsychological interventions targeting mood and cognition. Findings will highlight important knowledge gaps and help prioritise future research questions. Reduzindo a sobrecarga dos cuidadores na doença de Huntington usando uma abordagem neuropsicológica interventiva online: um estudo piloto

ABSTRACT Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary, neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor, cognitive, and behavioral issues. As the disease progresses, people become dependent on their caregivers leading to a significant burden. There is a lack of effective neuropsychological intervention to support this population. Objective: To develop an online neuropsychological intervention and evaluate its effects in decreasing the HD caregiver burden. Methods: This qualitative pilot study was conducted online during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. We selected a convenience sample of five informal caregivers of HD patients (mean 46.2 years old). At baseline, participants were assessed via an individual online neuropsychology interview/screening, covering demographic data. Subsequently, we conducted 20 online 90-minute sessions of the psychological consultation over 12 months. Each session was structured in three stages: 1) Welcoming; 2) Breathing and mindfulness practice; and 3) Discussion of themes about the group's needs based on the main complaints. A second intervention assessment was applied. Results: None of the caregivers were provided with details about HD at the time of diagnosis and later care. The necessity to care for a person with a rare genetic disease was added to caregivers' already-existing working routine and home services, causing a symptom of overload. After the neuropsychological intervention, all participants reported feeling less burdened by caring, improved self-care and conflict resolution with the person with HD through expanding behavioral repertoire focused on emotions and communication. Conclusion: Online neuropsychologic intervention can reduce the burden of HD caregivers. More comprehensive studies should investigate these findings.

Neuropsychological Intervention Using an Islamic Religious Approach to Prevent Bullying: Case Study at Madrasah Aliyah Mu'allimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta

Bullying cases continuously spread in educational institutions so that they affect student physical and psychological development and even give the institution reputation bad name. Madrasah Mu’allimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, on the other hand, is able to decrease the number of bullying cases. The objective of this research is to theorize bullying preventing practices in Madrasah Muallimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The approach of this research is descriptive qualitative. The informants of the research are the head of the madrasah, teachers, and students. The data collection methods are observation, interview, interpretation, and documentation. The data analyses are done with description, categorization, interpretation, and theorization. The result of the research shows that bullying preventing practices are done by combining psychological approach, neuroscience, and Islamic learning. The practices are then theorized into neuropsychology. Neuropsychology learns the relationship between brain and behavior, studies various functions including knowledge, skills in managing emotions focusing on empowering individuals. Neuropsychological interventions done at Madrasah Muallimaat Yogyakarta are: (1) Self-control through guidance, (2) Self-control through fasting habitation, (3) Self-control through collaboration and the values of friendship, (4) Self-control through religious activities (5) Self-control through empathy among students, and (6) self-control through patience and discipline. Theoretical configuration of the neuro-psycholgical intervention can be a model for the next research on bullying prevention in other Islamic educational institutions.
