Applying network simulation tools in learning process

The article is devoted to the problem of professional training of university students in the field of computer networks in the absence of specialized laboratories. The solution to this problem is the use of computer networks simulation tools. The authors presented thematic plan for studying the discipline ≪Computer networks and the Internet≫. The article considers domestic and foreign experience of using computer networks simulation tools. Based on the eight criteria identified by the authors, the analysis was carried out of the most popular software in the academic environment for computer networks modeling: Cisco Packet Tracer, GNS3, NS-3, EVE-NG, OMNeT++. As a result of the analysis and comparison, it was concluded that the Cisco Packet Tracer software product is the most preferred modeling environment in the conditions of a pedagogical university. The example of using the Cisco Packet Tracer modeling system within the training course ≪Computer networks and the Internet≫ is given, demonstrating the solution of a practice-oriented problem. The example shows the possibility of simulating switching, server, user equipment in the Cisco Packet Tracer environment; the ability to work with wireless networks. The principles of setting up server hardware and related software are considered.

What network simulator questions do users ask? a large-scale study of stack overflow posts

<span>The use of network simulator as a modern tool in analyzing and predicting the behaviour of computer networks has grown to reduce the complexity of its accuracy measurement. This growth of network simulator implementation have attracted the researchers and practitioners to share problems and discuss to improve the features. To communicate the issues relates to network simulators, users move to an online discussion platform, such as Stack Overflow. Although recent studies have shown the popularity and benefits of adopting network simulation tools, however, the challenges of using network simulator that users face remain mostly unknown. Therefore, in this paper, we examine 2,322 network-simulator-related Stack Overflow posts to provide insights on the topics that users are interested and the challenges they face. We apply the Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modeling to understand the topics that are being discussed in Stack Overflow. Then, we investigate the popularity and difficulty of each topic. The results of this study show that users use Stack Overflow as an implementation guideline for network simulation model. We determine 8 discussion topics that are merged into 5 major categories. Most of the posts discuss simulation model configuration. We also observe that target network protocol modification and network simulator installation are the most popular topics among the users compared to other topics. Users are specially facing challenges on network simulator installation and target network protocol modification issues.</span>

EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS OF AODV, DSDV, DSR ROUTING PROTOCOLS

MANET stands for Mobile Ad-Hoc Network, they consist of mobile nodes that offer a routable networking environment in the link layer. The nodes are connected wirelessly in a self-healing, self-configured network that have no fixed infrastructure or centralized management. Routing in MANET’s is a very inconvenient process as wireless links in this network are highly prone to error and go down frequently because of the mobility of nodes. Therefore, it is a highly researched topic around the world, and to overcome such difficulty many routing protocols have been suggested around the world to improve its efficiency. Some protocols used in this paper are Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV), Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), and Dynamic Source Routing. This paper hopes to summarize all the recent work done on MANET Routing protocols and the network simulator tool.

An Efficient Secured PIT Management and Attack Detection Strategy Enhanced by CSOA-DCNN Algorithm in a Named Data Networking (NDN)

Named Data Networking (NDN) is a developing Internet design that utilizes a new network communication model dependent on the identity of Internet content. Its core component, the Pending Interest Table (PIT) serves an important role of recording Interest packet information. In managing PIT, the issue of flow PIT measuring has been very challenging because of the huge use of long Interest lifetime especially when there is no adaptable replacement strategy, subsequently affecting PIT performance. Named Data Networking (NDN) might experience some emerging threats such as Interest Flooding Attacks (IFA). In this paper, we focus on the IFA that can seriously devour the memory resource for the Pending Interest Table (PIT) of each included NDN router by flooding a huge amount of malicious Interests with spoofed names. To extricate the pressure of PIT attacked by IFA, we propose a methodology of efficient Secured PIT management and attack detection strategy by using a cuckoo search optimization algorithmDeep convolutional neural network (CSOA-DCNN) algorithm in Named Data Network. The CSO algorithm initially utilizes a learning technique and afterward considers improved search operators and deep convolutional neural network architecture (DCNN) for classification. The network simulation tool is utilized to design and calculate PIT management. The results of the study on a 20 Gbps gateway trace shows that the corresponding PIT contains 1.5 M entries, and the lookup, insert and delete frequencies are 1.4 M/s, 0.9 M/s and 0.9 M/s. The contribution of this study is significant for Interest packet management in NDN routing and forwarding systems.

A new medium access control mechanism for energy optimization in WSN: traffic control and data priority scheme

Over the last few years, energy optimization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has drawn the attention of both the research community and actual users. Sensor nodes are powered by attached batteries that are considered as a critical aspect of sensor nodes design. Besides, the constraint of the limited battery capacity is associated with the concern on how to reduce the energy consumption of nodes to extend the network lifetime. In this context, the purpose of this study is to implement an adaptive medium access control (MAC) for energy saving and traffic control enhancement. This program was designed to arrange nodes into two priority groups according to their traffic rate and data transmission packet delay. This fuzzy algorithm depends on their queue length where it is implemented into the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) algorithm. However, other types of nodes should send their data during the contention-free period with a GTS reallocation scheme. Those nodes are classified as low priority access to the medium, and their data transmission is scheduled using time division multiple access methods. Moreover, this proposed scheme dynamically adjusts the contention access period length to ensure that nodes can complete their data transmission during the same super-frame. Simulation results are done using the network simulator tool (NS-2), and it has improved efficiency regarding the IEEE-802.15.4 standard.

Simulation of Scalability in Cloud-Based IoT Reactive Systems Leveraged on a WSAN Simulator and Cloud Computing Technologies

Implementing a wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) in Internet of Things (IoT) applications is a complex task. The need to establish the number of nodes, sensors, and actuators, and their location and characteristics, requires a tool that allows the preliminary determination of this information. Additionally, in IoT scenarios where a large number of sensors and actuators are present, such as in a smart city, it is necessary to analyze the scalability of these systems. Modeling and simulation can help to conduct an early study and reduce development and deployment times in environments such as a smart city. The design-time verification of the system through a network simulation tool is useful for the most complex and expensive part of the system formed by a WSAN. However, the use of real components for other parts of the IoT system is feasible by using cloud computing infrastructure. Although there are cloud computing simulators, the cloud layer is poorly developed for the requirements of IoT applications. Technologies around cloud computing can be used for the rapid deployment of some parts of the IoT application and software services using containers. With this framework, it is possible to accelerate the development of the real system, facilitate the rapid deployment of a prototype, and provide more realistic simulations. This article proposes an approach for the modeling and simulation of IoT systems and services in a smart city leveraged in a WSAN simulator and technologies of cloud computing. Our approach was verified through experiments with two use cases. (1) A model of sensor and actuator networks as an integral part of an IoT application to monitor and control parks in a city. Through this use case, we analyze the scalability of a system whose sensors constantly emit data. (2) A model for cloud-based IoT reactive parking lot systems for a city. Through our approach, we have created an IoT parking system simulation model. The model contains an M/M/c/N queuing system to simulate service requests from users. In this use case, the model replication through hierarchical modeling and scalability of a distributed parking reservation service were evaluated. This last use case showed how the simulation model could provide information to size the system through probability distribution variables related to the queuing system. The experimental results show that the use of simulation techniques for this type of application makes it possible to analyze scalability in a more realistic way.

Investigation and Evaluation of IEEE 802.11n WLANs Link Features Performance Under Single Host and Concurrent Communication

For an efficient design of wireless local-area networks (WLANs), the simulation tools are important to accurately estimate the IEEE 802.11n/ac link features for WLANs. However, this true simulation of network behavior is critical in designing high-performance WLANs. Through testing, analysis, and modeling of the proposed scheme repetitively, the design of the WLAN can be enhanced with a small budget before making its practical implementation. Many network simulation tools have been established to give solutions for this request and ns-3 is the most widely used tools among them by the research industry as an open-source network simulator. In this paper, we examine the various link features of the 802.11n WLANs under several conditions. We investigate the effects of 802.11n WLAN modulation and coding schemes (MCSs), 20MHz single channel or 40 MHz bonded channel, guard intervals (GI), frame aggregation, data encoding, number of antennas and their data rate, and link distance features of 802.11n WLAN in ns-3 when only a unique host connects with the access point (AP) and generates data traffic. Besides, the performance for an enterprise scenario proposed by the IEEE 802.11ax study group is evaluated when several hosts are simultaneously creating traffic with their associated APs. The results demonstrate that ns-3 support most of the link features of the 802.11n protocol with significant accuracy.

Enhancing Student Learning and Engagement in the Course on Computer Networks

The course on Computer Networks plays a significant role in the professional development of students graduating from various programmes such as Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology and Master of Computer Applications. Graduating Engineers with exclusive skills in administering and managing computer networks are highly demanded in the job market. The knowledge on computer networks is tested in many of the entrance examinations towards admission in Post Graduate programmes like Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Examination (TANCET) etc., The course also provides the necessary foundation for certification exams like Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA). Having realized the importance of the Computer Networks in placements, higher studies and international certifications, the instructional design has been evolved with the appropriate selection of active learning and collaborative learning strategies. The paper presents a detailed impact analysis of the instructional design in improving the attainment of learning outcomes, student engagement and satisfaction. The experimental study has been carried out in a student group of 130 members from the undergraduate programme on Information Technology at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai in the academic year 2020-21. A wide variety of network simulation tools, programming assignments have been included in the instructional design to promote hands on experience. Exclusive assessment items with customized rubrics are used for promoting technical, personal and interpersonal skills. The blend of instructor led and inquiry based teaching learning practices have shown significant improvement in the grades of continuous assessment test.

SCEER: Secure cluster based efficient energy routing scheme for wireless sensor networks

Balancing network integrity and energy efficiency is the one of major tasks in the network. In existing schemes, it is failed to balance both the metrics. In this research work, the Secure cluster based efficient energy routing is adopted to attain the more network lifetime. In first phase of the research, network and routing assumptions are made to initialize the effective packet transmission. In second phase, stability metric is determined for the cluster to maximize the energy efficiency. There are two cluster metrics used for the analysis of network stability. In third phase, the optimal cluster design model is initialized to balance the network integrity and energy efficiency. The proposed scheme is evaluated with network simulation tool in terms of node stability ratio, node reliability ratio, network lifetime, packet delay and energy efficiency.

Performance Evaluation of BDAG Aided Blockchain Technology in Clustered Mobile Ad-Hoc Network for Secure Data Transmission

In mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) environment, routing of data packets is a challenging task due to rapid changes in mobility and network topology. In addition, the security aspect of routing is disturbed by attacks caused by malicious nodes. These attacks greatly affect the Quality of Service. To overcome the challenges faced in routing message packets, the Bayesian Directed Acyclic Graph (B DAG) Aided Blockchain model is proposed for clustered MANET environment. The proposed model encompasses the following processes: (i) Multi factor authentication of users by using BLISS algorithm. This step involves acquisition of user credentials and generates hash values for those credentials using Cube Hash algorithm. These hash values are further used to generate public and private keys by BLISS algorithm, (ii) Weighted sum computation for clustering to reduce complexity in the MANET environment. Cluster head (CH) and cluster member (CM) are classified based on energy status, geometric distance, link quality and direction, (iii) A secure AODV based routing protocol using Dolphin Swarm Optimization (DSO) algorithm. This step involves selection of reputed node based on link stability, relative velocity, available bandwidth, energy, queue length, and trust. The packet forwarding is based on the reputation value of the node, by which the trust provided by malicious nodes are eliminated to improve security and (iv) Bayesian DAG aided blockchain, in which the user authenticity, data integrity of packets and signature are verified to mitigate the routing attacks created by nodes in the MANET environment. The proposed model is experimented in NS 3.26 network simulator tool and its performance in terms of multiple QoS metrics is evaluated.

A Novel Routing Protocol for Realistic Traffic Network Scenarios in VANET

The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) has traditional routing protocols that evolved from mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). The standard routing protocols of VANET are geocast, topology, broadcast, geographic, and cluster‐based routing protocols. They have their limitations and are not suitable for all types of VANET traffic scenarios. Hence, metaheuristics algorithms like evolutionary, trajectory, nature‐inspired, and ancient‐inspired algorithms can be integrated with standard routing algorithms of VANET to achieve optimized routing performance results in desired VANET traffic scenarios. This paper proposes integrating genetic algorithm (GA) in ant colony optimization (ACO) technique (GAACO) for an optimized routing algorithm in three different realistic VANET network traffic scenarios. The paper compares the traditional VANET routing algorithm along with the metaheuristics approaches and also discusses the VANET simulation scenario for experimental purposes. The implementation of the proposed approach is tested on the open‐source network and traffic simulation tools to verify the results. The three different traffic scenarios were deployed on Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and tested using NS3.2. After comparing them, the results were satisfactory and it is found that the GAACO algorithm has performed better in all three different traffic scenarios. The realistic traffic network scenarios are taken from Dehradun City with four performance metric parameters including the average throughput, packet delivery ratio, end‐to‐end delay, and packet loss in a network. The experimental results conclude that the proposed GAACO algorithm outperforms particle swarm intelligence (PSO), ACO, and Ad‐hoc on Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV) routing protocols with an average significant value of 1.55%, 1.45%, and 1.23% in three different VANET network scenarios.

Energy Efficient Congestion Aware Resource Allocation and Routing Protocol for IoT Network using Hybrid Optimization Techniques

The idea of Smart City incorporates a few ideas being technology, economy, governance, people, management, and infrastructure. This implies a Smart City can have distinctive communication needs. Wireless technologies, for example, WiFi, Zig Bee, Bluetooth, WiMax, 4G or LTE have introduced themselves as a solution for the communication in Smart City activities. Nonetheless, as the majority of them utilize unlicensed interference, coexistence and bands issues are increasing. So to solve the problem IoT is used in smart cities. This paper addresses the issues of both resource allocation and routing to propose an energy efficient, congestion aware resource allocation and routing protocol (ECRR) for IoT network based on hybrid optimization techniques. The first contribution of proposed ECRR technique is to employ the data clustering and metaheuristic algorithm for allocate the large-scale devices and gateways of IoT to reduce the total congestion between them. The second contribution is to propose a queue based swarm optimization algorithm for select a better route for future route based on multiple constraints, which improves the route discovering mechanism. The proposed ECRR technique is implemented in Network Simulator (NS-2) tool and the simulation results are compared with the existing state-of-art techniques in terms of energy consumption, node lifetime, throughput, end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio and packet overheads.

TCP-CLD: Cross-Layer Design for Improving TCP Performance Over Cognitive Radio Networks

Due to the development and evolution in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs), the performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) over CRN has become a crucial factor. TCP ensures the reliable end-to-end delivery of data, which is very important for the quality of service (QoS) requirements. TCP performance is severely affected by channel switching and channel availability in CRNs. The frequent occurrence of such events is due to CRNs nature which unnecessarily reduces the transmission rate which results in degrading the overall performance. In this paper, the authors investigate the limitations of using TCP NewReno (i.e., standard TCP) over CRNs, and further propose a cross-layer-design protocol based on an interaction between transport layer and lower layers to improve TCP performance over CRNs. The design is called Cross-Layer Design for TCP (TCP-CLD). It primarily aims at improving the TCP performance over CRNs via controlling and adapting a few selected TCP parameters. Specifically, the authors propose freezing the data transmission and re-transmission timeout (RTO) of TCP during the time of channel switching and channel unavailability. In addition, the authors update the size of congestion window (cwnd) of TCP based on the bandwidth and buffer size of relay nodes. Moreover, in the case of channel switching, the authors update the Round Trip Time (RTT) of TCP based on the new route delay. Simulation experiments have been conducted using ns-2 network simulator tool whereas results show that the proposed design achieves a significant performance improvement compared with the standard TCP NewReno protocol and the other known protocol, namely, TCP-CRAHN.

A secure and privacy preserving lightweight authentication scheme for smart-grid communication using elliptic curve cryptography

Abstract In last few decades, smart-grid architecture has evolved as a new power service provider that can accomplish regulations of power generation with significant capabilities to monitor power consumption behaviour of the consumers and help in stabilization of the power system. With the huge progress of the delay sensitive smart grid network, it has to encounter various challenges. One of them is cyber-threats to the transmitted messages, control information of the smart-grid, and privacy-preservation of the consumers over smart-grid environment that leave annihilate consequences in real word. One of the key solutions of these cyber-threats is mutual authentication and setting up safe communication between the consumer and the utility-provider. In this paper, we have addressed novel mutual authentication scheme between consumer and substations formed on elliptic curve cryptography with trifling operations for smart-grid environment that is robust against all possible security threats. This scheme also provides a session key negotiation phase to provide secure communication with significantly less communication and computation overheads. The mathematical security testingand formal security testing using broadly-accepted BAN-logic has established that our scheme is robust against all relevant security threats. Further, the simulation result of the proposed schemethrough well-known AVISPA confirms that our scheme is well secure.Finally, to validate the practical ability, the proposed scheme is evaluated using well-accepted network simulator tool NS-2, that shows the proposed scheme is efficient to be implemented in realistic scenario.

PRAVN: perspective on road safety adopted routing protocol for hybrid VANET-WSN communication using balanced clustering and optimal neighborhood selection

Recently, the transportation technologies and driving become essential part in everyone's life. International organization of motor vehicle manufacturers submitted manufactured vehicle list that reaches 97 million vehicles in a year. However, million people are died in road accidents each year and this number also increases in parallel. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) should be used to gather and distribute safety information to reduce the accident growths. Recently, several protocols have been proposed to address these issues, but the trade-off between energy and delay is major issues. In this paper, we propose a perspective on road safety adopted routing protocol for hybrid VANET-WSN communication (PRAVN) based on threefold contributions. The first contribution of PRAVN protocol is to perform clustering using improved water wave optimization (IWWO) algorithm. The second contribution is to compute the cluster head (CH) node of SN among multiple nodes based on multi-constraint features that are gathered from the SNs. Third contribution is to introduce the rider optimization (RO) algorithm for neighborhood selection, which provides the network lifetime and lossless connection. Finally, the PRAVN protocol used to forward correct information from source to destination that enhances the road safety. PRAVN protocol is implemented on network simulator (NS2) tool with the simulation of urban mobility (SUMO) for traffic generation. The simulation results prove that the proposed PRAVN protocol can outperform other conventional routing protocols in terms of packet delivery ratio, number of drops, throughput, routing overhead, energy consumption, end-to-to delay and network lifetime.

Energy Proficient Hybrid Secure Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks

One way hash chain with a new key indicating the performance of the node as well to isolate malicious nodes from the network. Public key cryptography is derived using elliptical curve cryptography (ECC) have couple of key for decryption and encryption. Public key cryptography provides protection and verification using numerous algorithms. In addition secret session key is generated for secured data transmission and improve energy efficiency in WSN. Advanced encryption standard (AES) is applied for message cipher text once the key validation process gets finished. Energy proficient hybrid secure scheme (EPHSS) is proposed to provide secured and energy efficient data transmissions in WSN. To utilise the node energy in a proper way node clustering process is carried out. Clustering process efficiently reduces unnecessary energy wastage during node communication. Graded co-prime keys are generated for public and private keys, also encrypting functions are performed for providing security mechanisms. This mechanism improves security measures and simultaneously reduces energy consumption among nodes. The route should be undetectable by malicious nodes and the data should not be lacerate by the opponent node even it gets to know the public key. Identifying private key component [B, n] is difficult for malevolent; thus building it computationally infeasible for discovering decryption type at receiver side. Simulation presentations of the networks are analysed by network simulator tool. Efficiency of the proposed scheme is computed by taking delivery rates of packets which results in 18% better than the conventional ECCSAS scheme.

SPCOR: a secure and privacy‐preserving protocol for mobile‐healthcare emergency to reap computing opportunities at remote and nearby

This study proposes a secure and privacy-preserving protocol for outsourcing health data processing operations during the emergency in the mobile healthcare network. The proposed protocol provides a practical solution to utilise smartphone resources at both remote and nearby for processing the overwhelming personal health information (PHI) of a user in healthcare emergency opportunistically and securely. The patients with symptoms matching with those of the user in an emergency are considered as opportunities to minimise the privacy disclosure of the user. Opportunities at both remote and nearby are exploited with the help of a base station in the 4G network. Moreover, novel and efficient outsourced privacy access control schemes are developed to minimise the power drain of the user in an emergency without compromising his privacy. The outsourced privacy access control is facilitated through the design of innovative schemes for outsourced attribute-based access mechanism and an outsourced privacy-preserving scalar product computation. Detailed performance evaluations through implementations on Raspberry Pi 3B + board and simulations using NS3 network simulator and Scyther tool confirm the efficiency of the proposed protocol in providing highly reliable PHI processing and transmissions with reasonably low delay and energy consumption while maintaining user privacy.

Traveling-Wave-Based Fault Location Method for Hybrid Distribution Network Mixed with Three-Phase and Phase to Phase Supply Lines

In China, a hybrid distribution network mixed with three-phase main lines and phase to phase supply lines can be found in many MV distribution networks due to lower cost of using two lines from three-phase main lines as well as lower cost of phase to phase transformer. For such a hybrid distribution network it is a challenge for traditional fault location techniques. This paper presents a traveling wave fault location method based on double-terminal measurement techniques. The proposed method analyses the traveling wave propagation mechanism of both aerial mode and zero mode components for a fault. The method then determines which mode component is used for the fault location according to fault types. The method has been developed and assessed on a typical distribution network using ATP power network simulation tool. The tests were conducted under various fault scenarios. The results show that zero mode component is more effective for a fault on the phase of three-phase main lines which is not linked to the phase to phase supply lines. However for a phase-to-phase fault, aerial mode component is more effective. For the remaining fault types, either aerial or zero mode component can be used.

Empowered AODV Protocol in Wireless Sensor Network using Three Variable RSA Cryptosystem

Background: The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a type of networks which primarily designed for the purpose of monitoring in remote areas. It consists of communicating nodes (called sensor's) which communicate each other to share their data and passing the information to the central node. In many applications like defence requires the secure communication of information. However, due to the numerous characteristics of WSN such as open shared communication channel, limited memory, and processing power of sensors, etc. these networks are vulnerable to various attacks such as black hole, gray hole, etc. Objective: The objective of the paper is to secure the AODV routing protocol in WSN using cryptography techniques. Methods: In this paper, the Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol has been chosen for information routing because of their lightweight processing capability. To provide secure communication in WSN, the AODV routing protocol is secured by utilizing the RSA key generation algorithm. Here, RSA with three variables (three prime numbers) is employed instead of two variables. Results: The effectiveness of the proposed approach in handling black hole attack is being verified through the simulation results obtained from the experiments conducted using Network Simulator tool (NS2). The three popular performance metrics namely Average End-to-End Delay, Packet Delivery Ratio, and Average Throughput are used for evaluation purpose. These results are observed under different pose time and varying number of malicious nodes. Conclusion: In this paper, a new three variable RSA cryptosystem-based security model is proposed to protect the communication against the Black Hole (BH) attack in wireless sensor networks. The use of three variables instead of two variables allows our model to provide more security as compared to other methods. Simulation results obtained from the experiments carried out using NS2 tool evident the performance of the proposed model over original AODV and other previous models.
