Middle Triassic basaltic pyroclastic rocks from the Mt. Medvednica ophiolitic mélange (NW Croatia): petrology, geochemistry and tectono-magmatic setting

Hectometric blocks of Middle Triassic mafic pyroclastic rocks, represented by volcanic agglomerates/breccias and lapilli tuffs, form part of the ophiolitic mélange of Mt. Medvednica, situated in the southwestern segment of the Zagorje-Mid-Transdanubian Zone. These rocks share petrochemical characteristics with pyroclastic derivatives of alkali, within-plate basaltic lavas of Mts. Medvednica, Samoborska Gora, and Kalnik, indicating the occurrence of explosive events preceding the dominant effusive submarine volcanism during the Middle Triassic (Illyrian-Fassanian?) stages. The formation of these pre-ophiolitic pyroclastics is associated with an intracontinental rift setting and reflects melts derived from an OIB-type enriched mantle plume source. These pyroclastics represent uncontaminated melts that erupted through a highly thinned continental crust. In geodynamic terms, the formation of pyroclastites occurred during the Late Anisian-Early Ladinian along the continental margin of Palaeotethys through the proto back-arc rifting of continental lithosphere (Adria Plate), leading to the formation of the Maliak/Balkan Neotethys Rift, in the emerging northwestern segment of Neotethys. The investigated pyroclastic rocks of Mt. Medvednica document the extension in an evolved intracontinental rift basin, which immediately preceded the generation of the initial Neotethyan oceanic lithosphere during the Upper Triassic.

Shortening and extrusion in the East Anatolian Plateau: How was Neogene Arabia-Eurasia convergence tectonically accommodated?

Deformation in orogenic belts is typically widely distributed but may be localized to form discrete, fast-moving fault zones enclosing semi-rigid microplates. An example is the Anatolian microplate, which is extruding westwards from the East Anatolian Plateau in the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone along the North and East Anatolian Faults that cause devastating earthquakes, including those of February 6, 2023 in Southeast Anatolia. Here, we summarize the orogenic architecture of the East Anatolian Plateau and its underlying kinematic history since the Cretaceous, and use this to reconstruct the tectonic situation that existed at the onset of and during the development of the Neogene East Anatolian Plateau and the Anatolian microplate. The orogen first formed in the late Cretaceous by subduction-accretion of microcontinental lithosphere below Neotethys oceanic lithosphere. Then, in Paleogene time, the accretionary orogen underwent regional upper plate extension, causing crystalline crust exhumation and deep-marine basin formation. From early Miocene time onwards, the extended orogen shortened again and must have accommodated ∼350 km of convergence, making crust up to 45 km thick, and causing >2 km of uplift. Since the ∼13 Ma onset of North Anatolian Fault formation, microplate extrusion absorbed no more than 25 % (∼65 km) of Arabia-Eurasia convergence and even during this time alone, >200 km of convergence must have been accommodated by continued ∼N-S shortening. We highlight the need for field studies of the East Anatolian Plateau to identify where and how this major shortening was accommodated, what role it played in plateau rise and the onset and dynamics of microplate extrusion, and to better assess seismic hazards.

Tectonic evolution of the South Pamir Orogen: Insights from the Permian to cretaceous magmatism

The Pamir orogen originated through the amalgamation of various arc terranes. Despite undergoing numerous studies, the subduction polarity and time regarding the accretion processes remain inadequately constrained. To address these issues, we carried out a detailed study of zircon and apatite U-Pb ages, zircon Hf isotopes, and whole-rock geochemistry for the Permian to Cretaceous gabbro, volcanic rocks and granitoids from the Southern Pamir and the Rushan-Pshart suture. Three stages of magmatism are identified, including 279–266 Ma gabbro and andesite to dacite, 209–208 Ma granitoids, and 108–103 Ma gabbro and granitoids, respectively. The Permian gabbro and basaltic andesite to dacite in Pshart Range are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), but are depleted in Ta, Nb, and Ti, suggesting formation from an enriched mantle source in a subduction zone. The Late Triassic I-type granitoids are typical arc calc-alkaline magmatic rocks with εHf(t) values varying from −8.7 to −3.5, which mainly sourced from the partial melting of mixed crustal sources predominately consisting mafic rocks with minor metasedimentary rocks. The Early Cretaceous Pshart granites are I-type granites with relatively low εHf(t) values ranging from −14.6 to −2.9, suggesting that they were crust-derived rocks. The Early Cretaceous Bazardara granites are identified as A2-type granites with the εHf(t) values ranging from −18.3 to +5.3, and were derived from mixing of mantle-derived and crust-derived magmas, or interaction between mantle melts and old crustal rocks. The early Cretaceous gabbro exhibits -MORB-like geochemical characteristics with flat REE pattern (La/YbN = 4.96), moderate enrichment of LILEs and weak depletion of Nb, Ta and Ti (Nb/LaPM = 0.94). Thus, the early Cretaceous A2-type granite, E-MORB-like gabbro and volcanic rocks were formed in an extensional setting. Our new data indicate that the southward subduction of the Rushan-Pshart oceanic slab started in the Early Permian and continued to the Late Triassic. Moreover, combining the previous data, we conclude that the Early Cretaceous granites and gabbro in the Southern Pamir formed in an extensional environment due to the southward rollback after northward near-flat subduction of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere.

THE ARABIA – EURASIA COLLISION ZONE IN IRAN: TECTONOSTRATIGRAPHIC AND STRUCTURAL SYNTHESIS

The Arabia – Eurasia collision zone in the central part of the Alpine – Himalayan orogenic system has had a complex deformation history since the Palaeozoic. In Iran, the collision zone consists of the Alborz‐Talesh, Kopeh Dagh and Zagros foldbelts and the intervening Central Iran area. In this review paper, we summarize the structural architecture and tectonostratigraphic characteristics of these domains and attempt to correlate regional deformation events between them. The results show that six regional‐scale deformation phases can be recognized and correlated in Iran over a time interval extending from the Late Palaeozoic to the Late Cenozoic.Late Palaeozoic rifting in northern Gondwana and subsequent oceanic spreading resulted in the separation of the Central and North Iran blocks from the Arabian Platform. These blocks later converged and collided with the southern margin of Eurasia due to the subduction of the intervening PalaeoTethys lithosphere (“Cimmerian orogeny”: Late Triassic). The convergent setting resulted in the initial development of the Alborz‐Talesh foldbelt in present‐day northern Iran, while extensional basins developed in the forebulge area in Central Iran. Continuing northward subduction of NeoTethyan oceanic lithosphere at the southern Eurasia margin produced Early Cretaceous back‐arc extension and associated volcanism in Central Iran and the Alborz‐Talesh area to the north. A phase of compressional deformation in the Late Cretaceous was related to the collision of a series of microcontinents derived from Northern Gondwana, including the Ercinjan and Bitlis massifs, with the Central Iran block, and is recorded in the Alborz‐Talesh foldbelt and in Central Iran. Further back‐arc extension in the late Paleocene – Eocene was accompanied by pervasive volcanism and volcaniclastic sedimentation throughout northern and Central Iran. The final closure of NeoTethys and convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates evolved through phases of early Oligocene “soft” collision and middle Miocene “hard” collision. This was accompanied by thrusting in the internal parts of the Zagros foldbelt and by folding and subordinate thrusting in the more external parts, with related development of the flexural Mesopotamian Basin in the foreland to the SW.

Early Cretaceous intrusive rocks in the Gangdese arc of southern Tibet do not support shallow subduction of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere

The subduction geometry of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere during the Early Cretaceous (i.e., shallow vs. steep subduction) remains in dispute due to the limited occurrence of the Early Cretaceous igneous rocks in the Gangdese arc. This study reports petrographical, zircon UPb geochronological, zircon Hf isotopic, whole-rock geochemical, and mineral geochemical data for the ultramafic-mafic and intermediate-felsic rocks in the eastern Gangdese arc, southern Tibet. All these rocks were emplaced at ca. 112–105 Ma (i.e. ca. 110 Ma). The ultramafic-mafic rocks (including hornblendite and hornblende gabbro) display field, petrographic, and geochemical features of cumulates and can be explained by the accumulation of hornblende + plagioclase from an andesitic parental magma. The intermediate-felsic rocks (including quartz diorites and granodiorites) show adakitic features and are most likely related to melts that experienced high-pressure hornblende fractionation followed by plagioclase accumulation. Hornblende thermobarometer reveals that these ultramafic-mafic and intermediate-felsic rocks formed at 837–907 °C and 6.6–11.1 kbar, indicating a rapid decompression condition that is most likely related to an extension setting. The data reported in this study and the literature reveal that the Early Cretaceous magmatism was active in the southern margin of the Gangdese arc, suggesting that the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere most likely experienced a steep, rather than a shallow subduction beneath the Lhasa Terrane during the Early Cretaceous.

The onset of Neo-Tethys subduction in the Early Jurassic: evidence from the eclogites of the North Shahrekord Metamorphic Complex (Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone, W Iran)

AbstractGeodynamic models implying subduction of continental crust either consider this process happening during collision, when the continental margin of the lower plate attempts subduction, or in pre-collisional stages, when tectonic erosion of the upper plate or subduction of continental extensional allochthons drag continental crust in the subduction channel. In the Zagros orogen (W Iran), high-pressure rocks are known only from the Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone, NE of the Main Zagros Thrust. Here, eclogites of the North Shahrekord Metamorphic Complex suggest subduction of continental crust slices derived from the upper plate (Central Iran) during the onset of the Neo-Tethys subduction along the southern margin of Iran. Eclogites record a clockwise pressure-temperature-time path, with pre-eclogitic epidote-amphibolites-facies phase assemblages preserved in garnet cores, a high-pressure stage, and a subsequent retrogression at amphibolite-facies conditions. By means of forward thermodynamic modelling and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, the peak metamorphism has been constrained at 1.9-2.1 GPa and 550-600 °C, in the 191-194 Ma time span. The following retrogression during exhumation lasted at least until 144 Ma. Our data suggest that the onset of the Neo-Tethys subduction traces back prior to 190 Ma, involving together with the Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere also slices of the upper plate continental crust scraped off by means of tectonic erosion processes.

Geochemical dichotomy of Tethyan oceanic mantle and the supercontinent connection: Insights from Os isotopic signatures of mantle peridotites from Naga Hills ophiolite

Naga Hills Ophiolite (NHO) represents a thrusted section of relict Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere comprising distinct crustal and upper mantle lithologies that preserve imprints of different stages of evolution of ancient ocean basins and subsequent accretion onto continental margins during late Cretaceous-Eocene collision involving Indian and Eurasian Plates. This study presents bulk geochemistry and Re-Os isotopic compositions for the mantle peridotites of NHO to address their petrogenetic aspects, implications for Neo-Tethyan upper mantle heterogeneity and thermo-tectonic evolution of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere through subduction-accretion-collision processes. Geochemical characteristics of the mantle peridotites, as reflected from their chondrite normalized REE patterns, binary relationship between fractionation depletion indices, low Re/Os, suggest that these are mantle residues resulting from ∼ 5–20 % of melt extraction from a spinel peridotite source that experienced decompression melting in a fore-arc extensional setting in response to subduction initiation. Isotopically, these mantle peridotites are subchondritic with 187Os/188Os (0.1218–0.1266) and γOs values of −3.73 to −0.09 comparable with the depleted MORB source. LILE-LREE enrichment, HFSE depletion, and U-shaped chondrite-normalized REE patterns demonstrated by the studied samples with Re addition collectively corroborate multistage petrogenetic processes in compliance with geodynamic transition from extensional to compressional regime in a suprasubduction zone environment and partial melting of a chemically heterogeneous source mantle. This compositional heterogeneity can be equated with mantle depletion by melt extraction and refertilization by influx of slab-dehydrated fluids and percolation of boninitic melts. The non-radiogenic Os isotope signatures, negative γOs values and wide spectrum of melt extraction ages for these mantle peridotites correspond to (i) multiple melt production and melt extraction events prior to the opening of Neo-Tethyan seaway (ii) detachment and incorporation of ancient, depleted SCLM fragments into oceanic mantle concurrent with subduction driven ocean basin closure-congregation of Gondwana Supercontinent and emergence of Neo-Tethyan embryonic ocean in response to disintegration of Gondwana Supercontinent.

Record of an oceanic island in the Neo-Tethys Ocean (lowermost Cretaceous Xiazha Formation, Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone, South Tibet)

The Xiazha Formation recently identified in the Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone of southern Tibet has been considered as crucial evidence for early (pre-Cretaceous) subduction of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere. In this study, we carried out an integrated stratigraphic, petrographic, and geochemical study of the Xiazha Formation, which consists of abyssal chert, siliceous mudrocks, and calcareous turbidites deposited onto basaltic basement. Basalt geochemistry indicates alkali to tholeiitic magmas generated in a within-plate oceanic setting. The siliciclastic fraction contained in calcareous turbidites consists of plagioclase and mafic-rock fragments derived from the underlying basalts, and includes Cr-spinel grains with relatively high TiO2 and moderate Al2O3 concentrations pointing to an OIB source. Based on these data, and virtual lack of detritus of continental origin, we infer that the Xiazha Formation was deposited in oceanic island/plateau within the Neo-Tethyan domain. Its stratigraphy records an evolution from basaltic eruptions to the development of a carbonate platform surrounding the basaltic island, and finally to drowning of the atoll. The Xiazha Formation was not deposited in a subduction-related basin and, therefore, cannot be used as evidence for pre-Cretaceous initiation of the Yarlung subduction zone.

Tracking multiple stages of serpentinization processes of the Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone peridotites in southern Tibet: Implications for the tectonic evolution of the Neotethyan oceanic lithosphere

Serpentinites are key repositories of fluid-mobile elements (FMEs) in subduction zones and record significant information about the origin and geodynamic evolution of oceanic lithosphere. Here, we report on the structural textures and mineralogical compositions of different types of serpentinites collected from the central segment of the Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone in southern Tibet and present their bulk-rock and mineral chemistry, and Sr isotopic compositions. The main textures include massive, scaly, and gouge serpentinites exposed in the Ngamring and Sangsang ophiolites. Bulk-rock Al2O3/SiO2 and spinel Cr# values suggest that the Ngamring serpentinites originally formed in an abyssal setting, whereas the Sangsang serpentinites developed initially in a forearc mantle. Both serpentinite assemblages were subsequently incorporated into a subduction plate interface as subducted serpentinites. Massive serpentinites preserve the geochemical fingerprint of original serpentinized fluids in mid-oceanic ridge to forearc settings, whereas sheared serpentinites with scaly and gouge textures are reset in their Sr isotopic compositions and FME ratios (i.e., Cs/U, Li/U, and Rb/U) due to their reactions with slab-derived fluids. Scaly and gouge types of the Ngamring serpentinites have lower 87Sr/86Sr values (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7081−0.7082) and higher alkali element−U ratios (i.e., Cs/U, Li/U, and Rb/U) than those of the massive serpentinite types (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7091−0.7096), which indicates that they interacted with fluids at a slab interface after their initial seafloor serpentinization. In contrast, the massive Sangsang serpentinites display lower 87Sr/86Sr values (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7041−0.7043, similar to those of the Yarlung Zangbo ophiolites) and higher alkali element−U ratios than those of the sheared serpentinites (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7063−0.7087). These findings point to the significant role of the increased influx of subducted sediment-derived fluids within subduction shear zones in further affecting the serpentinization fingerprint. This study demonstrates that serpentinites with different textural, geochemical, and isotopic features within the same suture zone may represent the serpentinization products in different tectonic environments during the seafloor spreading, subduction initiation, and subduction zone evolution of oceanic lithosphere.

Concurrent adakitic and non-adakitic Late Miocene-Quaternary magmatism at the Sahand volcano, Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Arc (NW Iran)

The Sahand volcano in NW Iran is characterised by voluminous Late Miocene to Quaternary magmatic activity. Petrographic, mineral chemical, whole-rock geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data allowed to identify two rock groups, continuously emplaced from the ancient Paleo-Sahand to the later Neo-Sahand stages. These are represented by abundant evolved rocks, with dacitic to rhyolitic compositions and less common intermediate (andesitic) rocks. Both rock types have the typical LILE-enriched and HFSE-depleted fingerprints of magmas originated from subduction-modified mantle sources, as well as radiogenic Sr- and Pb- (18.8–18.9 206Pb/204Pb, 15.6–15.7 207Pb/204Pb and 38.8–39.2 208Pb/204Pb) isotope compositions. Nevertheless, the evolved rocks have lower 87Sr/86Sr (0.70437–0.70491 vs 0.70494–0.70585) and display an evident high Sr/Y vs Y and high La/Yb vs Yb “adakitic” signature, suggesting derivation from the partial melting of lower continental crust rocks, rather than from the differentiation of the non-adakitic intermediate rocks. The latter would be the derivative melts of magmas generated by the partial melting of lithospheric mantle sources modified by metasomatic fluids released by the subducted Neotethyan oceanic lithosphere. During their ascent and differentiation, these magmas likely provided the heat necessary to induce partial melting of the lower continental crust, eventually producing adakitic evolved magmas. Quantitative models and geothermobarometric calculations suggest that differentiation processes for both rock groups occurred mainly by polybaric fractional crystallisation (in the 29–4 km depth range), possibly coupled with minor assimilation of local crustal rocks.The peculiar style of the Sahand magmatic activity (with both adakitic and non-adakitic products) and its temporal evolution (with an overall increase of the degree of evolution and a decrease of the non-adakitic melts) are somewhat different with respect to those of the coeval neighbouring districts of Saray, Sabalan and Bijar-Qorveh. These can be reconciled within a general model for NW Iran where magmatism is triggered by upwelling of the sub-lithospheric mantle as a consequence of slab break-off (or the opening of a slab tear). The progressive propagation (and subsequent exhaustion) of the thermal pulse and the increasing thickness of the continental crust played a main role in determining both the progressively later inception of active magmatism (from ∼11 to 4.5 Ma) and the change in magma types (from largely variable to adakitic only) at increasing distance from the Iran-Arabia suture.

Influences of subduction derived fluids and melt in the genesis of Nidar ophiolite peridotites, Ladakh Himalaya, India: Evidence from mineralogy, PGE and Nd isotopic compositions

The Nidar ophiolite is one of the well-preserved and almost complete ophiolite sections of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere, obducted along the continental margin between the Indian and the Eurasian plate. This ophiolite sequence is mostly dominated by ultramafic rocks, consisting of forearc-related refractory, mainly harzburgite, dunite, and serpentinite, with minor intrusions of lherzolite, chromitites, and pyroxenites. In this present study, detailed mineralogical, whole rock geochemistry (major oxides, trace elements, PGE), and Nd isotopic composition of mantle-derived peridotites have been carried out to constrain the petrogenesis and melt evolution. These peridotites are depleted in nature due to the low modal composition of clinopyroxene, high forsterite content in olivine, and wide variation in Cr# and bulk rock chemistry, indicating variable degree of partial melting. The spoon-shaped rare earth element (REE) patterns indicate metasomatism by fluids derived from a subducting slab enriched in light REEs. Geochemical composition of the studied peridotites rocks is marked by high ratio of Al2O3/TiO2, LILE-LREE enrichment, HFSE depletion, and spoon-shaped chondrite-normalized REE patterns and (La/Sm)N > 1 and (Gd/Yb)N < 1, indicates some involvement of boninitic mantle melts and validate a subduction initiation process. The total PGE of the peridotites (ΣPGE = 33–337 ppb) is much more enriched than that of the primitive mantle and other ophiolite peridotites. The PGE distribution displays a concave upward pattern with higher PPGE/IPGE ratios (i.e., 0.11–1.45), suggesting that partial melting is not the only process for the evolution of the Nidar ophiolite peridotites. Enrichment of PPGE and incompatible elements (like LREE) and higher Pd/Ir ratio (0.69–8.26) indicates that these peridotites have undergone fluid/melt interaction in a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) tectonic setting. PGE concentrations of these depleted harzburgites and dunites, formed by partial melting of cpx–harzburgites in an SSZ that produced the boninitic-like melt. The enrichment of incompatible elements like the PPGE is mainly due to the circulation of fluids in the subduction zone, which leads to the PGE fractionation in mantle peridotites. Also, these peridotites have 143Nd/144Nd ratios (0.51148–0.51262) and εNd(t) (t = 140 Ma) values (i.e., +0.97 to −21.3), indicating derivation from depleted mantle sources within an intra-oceanic arc setting. The geochemical behavior exhibited by the Nidar ophiolite peridotites suggests the evolution of a highly depleted fore-arc mantle wedge significantly modified by various fluids and melts during subduction. The mineralogical, geochemical, and Nd isotopic composition of these peridotites and dunites mutually depict the diverse mantle compositions, suggesting insights into the interactions between the oceanic crust and mantle as well as associated geochemical cycling in an SSZ environment.

Cretaceous magmatic migration and flare-up in Pamir–Karakoram

The Pamir–Karakoram terrain contains abundant Cretaceous granitoids, and minor coeval volcanic rocks and mafic intrusions, which represent a wide (ca. 400 km) continental arc developed during northward subduction of Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere. However, little is known of the tectonic controls on the magmatic flare-ups and their implications for crustal thickening. In this paper, we report new zircon UPb age and Hf isotope data for Cretaceous biotite granites, two-mica granites and mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) from the large-scale granitic batholiths in Pamir. These and previously published results show there were four episodes of Cretaceous magmatism (124–108, 107–103, 102–92, and 80–70 Ma). The Cretaceous arc migrated progressively landward from Karakoram to Central Pamir with a maximum arc–trench distance of ca. 400 km during the first magmatic episode (124–108 Ma). The igneous rocks are mainly S-type granites with enriched zircon Hf isotopic compositions (ɛHf(t) = −19.8 to −5.4), indicating derivation by partial melting of metasedimentary units. A magmatic flare-up at 105 ± 2 Ma generated voluminous I-type granites and minor mafic igneous rocks that cover ca. 30% of the study area. The I-type granites have higher zircon ɛHf(t) values (−19.0 to −2.0) as compared with those of the earlier S-type granites, which reflect the addition of mantle-derived materials (ca. 30%). The third episode of magmatism (102–92 Ma) generated mainly intermediate–silicic volcanic rocks, which are geochemically similar to I-type granites and have ɛHf(t) values of −15.0 to −1.5. The final episode of magmatism (80–70 Ma) was dominated by alkaline and mafic igneous rocks formed in a post-collisional setting, which have variable ɛHf(t) values of −6.6 to 10.5. Our study highlights that the Early Cretaceous magmatic flare-up in the Pamir–Karakoram terrain was related to foundering of the flat-slab of Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere that was previously subducted, which induced voluminous underplating of mantle-derived magma in the lower crust. This process had a key role in crustal thickening in the Pamir–Karakoram terrain prior to the Cenozoic India–Asia collision.

Late Cretaceous tectonothermal events of the Gangdese belt, southern Tibet

Abstract The Gangdese belt of the southern Lhasa terrane (southern Tibet) records a Chileantype accretionary orogeny driven by subduction of Neotethyan oceanic lithosphere, prior to Indo-Asian collision and formation of the Tibetan Plateau. We present detailed structural analysis of outcrops and a drill core in the Jiama copper ore district along with 40Ar-39Ar cooling ages from white mica, plagioclase, and potassium feldspar and zircon U-Pb geochronology of granitoids and sandstone. These data add new constraints to the formation of a major angular unconformity, deformation along and within the footwall of the Gangdese décollement, and the coupling between deformation and magmatism. Structural analysis indicates that top- to- the- south motion along the décollement produced southvergent folding and thrusting of Upper Jurassic to Cretaceous strata in the Gangdese back-arc basin. A synthesis of new and compiled age data reveals that the décollement and associated south-vergent deformation occurred between ca. 90 and 65 Ma, contemporaneous with the formation of a major ca. 85–69 Ma angular unconformity between the overlying Paleocene–Eocene Linzizong Formation and the underlying Upper Cretaceous Shexing Formation. We posit that this deformation in the Gangdese belt resulted from flat-slab subduction of the Neotethyan oceanic slab beneath the southern margin of the Asian continent. A flat-slab subduction geometry is consistent with previously documented synchronous thrusting in the forearc and back-arc basins as well as the observed arc magmatic lull of the Gangdese belt between ca. 80 and 65 Ma.

Cenozoic low temperature cooling history of the eastern Lhasa terrane: Implications for high-relief topography of external drainage area in the southern Tibetan Plateau

The Tibetan Plateau geographically contains internal and external drainage areas based on the distributions of river flows and catchments. The internal and external drainage areas display similar high-elevations, while their topographic reliefs are not comparable; the former shows a large low-relief surface, whereas the latter is characterized by relatively high relief. The eastern Lhasa terrane is a key tectonic component of the Tibetan Plateau. It is characterized by high topography and relief, but the thermal history of its basement remains relatively poorly constrained. In this study we report new apatite fission track data from the eastern part of the central Lhasa terrane to constrain the thermo-tectonic evolution of the external drainage area in the southern Tibetan Plateau. Twenty-one new AFT ages and associated thermal history models reveal that the basement underlying the external drainage area in southern Tibet experienced three main phases of rapid cooling in the Cenozoic. The Paleocene-early Eocene (∼60–48 Ma) cooling was likely induced by crustal shortening and associated rock exhumation, due to accelerated northward subduction of the NeoTethys oceanic lithosphere. A subsequent cooling pulse lasted from the late Eocene to early Oligocene (∼40–28 Ma), possibly due to the thickening and consequential erosion of the Lhasa lithosphere resulted from the continuous northward indentation of the India plate into Eurasia. The most recent rapid cooling event occurred in the middle Miocene-early Pliocene (∼16–4 Ma), likely induced by accelerated incision of the Lhasa River and local thrust faulting. Our AFT ages and published low-temperature thermochronological data reveal that the external drainage area experienced younger cooling events compared with the internal drainage area, and that the associated differentiated topographic evolution initiated at ca. 30 Ma. The contributing factors for the formation of the high-relief topography mainly contain active surface uplift, fault activity, and the enhanced incision of the Yarlung River.

Petrological and geochemical evidence for partial melting and melt-rock interaction in mantle rocks from the eastern part of the Sabzevar ophiolite, NE Iran

ABSTRACT The Sabzevar ophiolite is the most extensive and best-exposed section of oceanic lithosphere in NE Iran. In this study, we examined the mantle section of the eastern part of the Sabzevar ophiolite, where mantle peridotites are the most widespread rock type and are crosscut by pyroxenite veins and mafic dykes. Major and trace element compositions (minerals and whole-rock) of lherzolites are akin to those of abyssal peridotites from mid-ocean ridges (MOR), whereas those of harzburgites evidence formation in a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) setting. Rare-earth element (REE) patterns of whole-rock and clinopyroxene of lherzolites and harzburgites suggest polybaric melting, with initial melting in the garnet peridotite field (~5–6%), followed by ~5–15% melting for lherzolites and ~10–20% for harzburgites in the spinel peridotite field. Harzburgites show LREE enrichment incompatible with partial melting models, indicating significant interaction with SSZ-related melts, whereas analysed lherzolites experienced limited melt-rock interaction. Pyroxene dissolution and olivine precipitation in residual peridotites resulting from reaction with island arc tholeiite and/or boninite melts led to the formation of dunites. These melts eventually intruded as dykes and veins in the mantle and crustal sections of the ophiolite. In addition, boninite melts are inferred to be responsible for forming olivine pyroxenite veins within the harzburgites. We conclude that the mantle section of the Sabzevar ophiolite formed in an intra-oceanic arc setting and experienced a geochemical evolution from a MOR-like to SSZ setting. The intra-oceanic subduction of the Neotethys oceanic lithosphere and shifting conditions of melting during the development of subduction beneath the incipient island arc were responsible for the geochemical heterogeneity of mantle peridotites and the generation of SSZ-related magmas within the Sabzevar oceanic lithosphere.

Partial melting of amphibolitic lower crust and subsequent melt-crystal separation for generation of the Early Eocene magmatism in eastern Himalaya

The Himalayan leucogranites provide a good opportunity to investigate the crustal evolution of the southern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In this study, we present zircon U-Pb and monazite U-Th-Pb ages, zircon Hf isotopes and whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes and major and trace elements for the Liemai two-mica granite, eastern Himalaya. Together with previously published data we revalued the petrogenesis of the Early Eocene magmatic rocks in this region and their geological implications. The zircon and monazite U-(Th)-Pb dating results showed that the Liemai two-mica granite was generated at ∼ 43 Ma, similar to adjacent Yardoi, Dala and Quedang adakitic two-mica granites, Ridang subvolcanic rocks and Yardoi leucogranite. The Liemai two-mica granite, similar to these coeval adakitic two-mica granites, is enriched in SiO2, Al2O3, Th, U, Pb, La, and Sr, and depleted in MgO, total iron, Yb and Y with high Sr/Y and (La/Yb)N ratios (showing adakitic affinities), and exhibits enriched Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic compositions, suggesting an origin of a thickened lower crust consisting mainly of garnet amphibolite. Although the Ridang subvolcanic rocks and Yardoi leucogranite show similar Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes to these adjacent coeval two-mica granites, perceptible differences in whole-rock major and trace elements can be observed. Broadly, these granites can be divided into high-Mg# granites (HMGs, the two-mica granites) and low-Mg# granites (LMGs, the Ridang subvolcanic rocks and Yardoi leucogranite). The former has relatively higher contents of total iron, MgO, Mg#, TiO2, P2O5, LREE, Y, Th, Sr, incompatible elements (Cr and Ni) and Eu/Eu* values, and lower contents of SiO2 and Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios, thus is less evolved than the latter. According to recent studies of differentiation processes in silicic magma reservoirs, we proposed that the HMGs represent a congealed crystal mush that was composed of ‘cumulate crystals’ and a trapped interstitial liquid, while the LMGs represent the almost pure liquid that was extracted from the crystal mush. Modeling using the trace elements Sr and Ba shows that the extraction probably occurred when the crystallinity of the mush was ∼ 60%–63%, at least for the most evolved LMGs sample. The HMGs correspond to a residual crystal mush that had a terminal porosity of ∼ 21%–25% filled with a trapped interstitial liquid. Underplating of mafic magmas following slab breakoff of the Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere caused partial melting of the amphibolitic lower crust, which had been thickened to ~50 km prior to ~43 Ma.

Emplacement and evolution of zoned plutons: Multiproxy isotopic and geochemical evidence from the peraluminous Laojunshan leucogranite suite, southwestern China, and implications on the regional geodynamic and metallogenic history

The petrogenesis and geodynamic setting of peraluminous leucogranites are important topics for reconstructing regional geodynamic and metallogenic models. Here we present the results of an integrated study of zircon U-Pb ages and Hf-O isotopic compositions, monazite U-Th-Pb-Nd isotopes, tourmaline boron isotope, and bulk-rock elemental and Sr-Nd isotope geochemistry of an unusual suite of leucogranite, the Laojunshan leucogranite (LJSL), from the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block in southwest China. The LJSL samples are strongly peraluminous with their zircon δ18O (8.8–10.2 ‰) and tourmaline δ11B (−14.32 to −12.75 ‰) values suggesting S-type origin. The LJSL rocks show high SiO2, Al2O3, K2O and Rb/Sr, low P2O5, CaO, FeOt, MgO, low REE abundances with moderate LREE enrichment and strong negative Eu anomalies, high (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.7127–0.7421) and low εNd(t) (−10.36 to −12.67). These features suggest protracted fractional crystallization from S-type parental granitoid magmas with Ti-in-zircon thermometry giving a mean temperature of ∼760 °C. The bulk-rock Sr-Nd, monazite Nd and zircon Hf-O isotope data suggest that the S-type magmas parental to the LJSL formed through partial melting involving muscovite-breakdown in the Paleoproterozoic middle-upper crustal metasedimentary rocks. Zircon and monazite U-(Th)-Pb dating reveals three intrusive phases for the LJSL (91–89 Ma, 87–85 Ma and 83–82 Ma), correlating with the compression-to-extension tectonic regime transition in response to the subduction polarity change from northwestward subduction of the Okhotomorsk block to northward subduction of the Neotethys oceanic lithosphere. Our findings contribute to the understanding of Mesozoic plate reconstruction associated with the India-Asia collision in the Cenozoic.

Neo-Tethyan subduction triggered Eocene–Oligocene magmatism in eastern Iran

AbstractEocene–Oligocene magmatic rocks are well exposed in the region south of Birjand, eastern Iran. The ages, geochemistry and petrogenesis of these rocks are important to understand eastern Iran’s magmatic and geodynamic history during the Cenozoic. Detailed field investigations show that numerous intrusive, intermediate to felsic units are intruded into a thick sequence of Eocene–Oligocene lava flows and their accompanying pyroclastic rocks. The volcanic rocks are mainly basaltic andesitic to rhyolitic, whereas intrusive rocks are characterized by dioritic to granitic composition. Previously compiled U–Pb geochronological data indicate that Eocene–Oligocene magmatism in eastern Iran formed continuously from ∼46 Ma to ∼25 Ma. Our new zircon U–Pb data reveal crystallization ages of 43.6 ± 0.4 Ma to 39.5 ± 0.6 Ma, consistent with the upper end of this age range. Geochemically, the igneous rocks have high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic signatures. Rare-earth and trace element patterns show enrichment in LREEs, K, Rb, Cs, Pb, Th and U and depletion in HFSEs such as Nb, Zr and Ti, typical of a subduction-related environment.87Sr/86Sr(i)and ϵNd(i)values range from 0.7051 to 0.7064 and −0.1 to +0.2, respectively. We postulate that the Cretaceous northeastward subduction of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere underneath the Iranian Plateau caused sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) metasomatism by slab-derived fluid components. Subsequently, slab roll-back of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere associated with asthenospheric upwelling led to lithospheric thinning and melting of the metasomatized SCLM. The resulting parental magmas probably interacted with upper continental crust during magma ascent to form Eocene–Oligocene magmatism in eastern Iran.

A crystal mush origin for the high Sr/Y plutons: Insights from the Nyemo Igneous Complex in the Gangdese arc, southern Tibet

High Sr/Y plutons generated in continental arc resemble geochemically the Archean trondhjemite-tonalite-granodiorite suite and are widely used to interpret processes of intermediate-felsic crust generation during the Archean. However, this geochemical signature could be overinterpreted without detailed petrographic observation. Here we carry out a study of detailed field and petrographic observations, geochronology , and geochemistry for the Nyemo Igneous Complex (NIC) in the central Gangdese arc, southern Tibet . Our results show that the NIC is composed of gabbros , monzogabbros, monzodiorites, monzonites , and monzogranites that were formed at 91–89 Ma. Petrographic observations and geochemical data suggest that the diverse lithologies of the NIC can be ascribed to a cogenetic magma fractionation sequence defined by olivine → orthopyroxene + clinopyroxene + apatite + Fe-Ti oxides → plagioclase + biotite → K-feldspar → amphibole . The early crystallization of biotite and relatively late crystallization of amphibole indicates that the primary melts of the NIC have low water contents. The monzodiorites and monzogranites from the NIC have high Sr (412–1026 ppm), low Y (4.30–25.4 ppm), and thus high Sr/Y ratios (16–140). The orthocumulate texture defined by euhedral phenocrysts of normally zoned plagioclase and subhedral biotite indicates these high Sr/Y rocks are unlikely pure melts and instead represent fossil plagioclase-rich magma mush. We emphasize that the high Sr/Y signature does not necessarily reflect the pressures of magma generation involved of garnet/amphibole as residual or fractional phases. Late Cretaceous arc magmatic rocks in the eastern and central Gangdese arc show different crystallization sequences, requiring the presence of contemporaneous primary melts with distinct H 2 O contents along the Gangdese arc, which probably were caused by variable water input from the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere . • Nyemo Igneous Complex (NIC) in the Gangdese arc represents a fractionation sequence. • The primary melts of the Nyemo Igneous Complex have low water contents. • High Sr/Y plutons in the NIC represent fossil plagioclase-rich magma mush. • Arc magma evolution is controlled by the water input from the oceanic lithosphere.

Petrogenesis and tectonic implications of Cenozoic mafic volcanic rocks in the Kahak area of central Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatic arc, Iran

• Mafic volcanic rocks in the Kahak area were erupted at ∼ 60–55 Ma and ∼ 21 Ma. • The Kahak basaltic rocks are divided into two groups of low and high Nb/Ta ratios. • The petrogenesis of the Kahak basaltic rocks involved slab dehydration and melting. • Slab rollback and mantle metasomatism occurred during the Paleocene–Eocene and Miocene . Cenozoic volcanic rocks are widely distributed in the Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatic arc (UDMA), Iran, but their petrogenesis and tectonic implications remain enigmatic. The volcanic rocks in the Kahak area of the central UDMA are mostly basalt and basaltic andesite. They show enrichment in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements and depletion in the high-field-strength elements (Nb, Ta, and Ti), corroborating a subduction-related origin. U–Pb ages of zircon from these volcanic rocks demonstrate two episodes of magmatism during the Paleocene–Eocene (∼60–55 Ma) and Miocene (∼21.9–21.4 Ma). These rocks have 87 Sr/ 86 Sri values from 0.70485 to 0.70577, ɛ Nd (t) values from +2.0 to +5.0, and zircon Hf isotopes ε Hf (t) values from +8.3 to +10.2. These features with isotopic modeling support derivation from partial melting of an asthenospheric mantle wedge in an extensional intracontinental-arc basin. This mantle source was previously metasomatized by subducted slab components of the Neotethys Ocean. The mafic melts underwent fractional crystallization and minor crustal contamination during magma evolution. The Paleocene–Eocene basaltic rocks have subchondritic Nb/Ta ratios, indicating that the magma source was affected by fluids with low-Nb/Ta ratios, which were released during shallow metamorphism of a subducted slab. However, the Miocene basaltic rocks have unusual superchondritic Nb/Ta ratios, indicating slab melt involvement. Geochemical data and field relationship indicate that mafic volcanism in the Kahak area occurred in an extensional setting associated with the Paleogene shallowing of the northeastward-subducting Neotethyan oceanic lithosphere followed by Late Paleogene and Neogene slab rollback and eventual partial melting of a deeply subducted oceanic slab.
