A generalized infection with Herpesvirus hominis has been established in the small New World monkey, Aotus trivirgatus or owl monkey, by inoculation of amnion culture propagated virus into the conjunctival cul-de-sac. Clinical studies of 8 animals indicate a rapidly progressive infection with fever, keratoconjunctivitis, rhinitis, and pnemnonitis. Lethargy, prostration, pretermlnal hypothermia, and death developed in 4 to 5 days. Virus was recovered in eonjunctival and pharyngeal secretions by 24 to 48 hours, and viremia was present by 72 hours. Pathologic studies indicated marked hepatic, adrenal, and splenic focal necrosis accompanied by interstitial pneumonitis and minimal changes in other organs. Virus was consistently recovered from the liver, adrenals, kidneys, spleen, lungs, hear t , blood, corneas, brains, spinal cord, and lymph nodes. These clinical findings and pathologic changes are strikingly similar to the findings in cases of neonatal herpesvirus infection. Intravenous 5-iodo-deoxyuridine administered every 12 hours for a total dose of 500 and 750 mg. per kilogram failed to alter the course of the infection when therapy was begun 48 hours after inoculation.
