The grape snout beetle ( Naupactus xanthographus ) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an important pest of grapes. Chemical control is difficult due to its subterranean larval stages but, given the adult cannot fly, it has been successfully managed in fruit crops using bands around the trunk containing an oily surface with organophosphate insecticide, which would be unacceptable in organic production. In this study, bands containing organically acceptable alternatives (oil, azadirachtina and polybutene) were compared, in laboratory and greenhouse conditions, with the traditional alternatives (azinphos methyl and INIA mix) and a control. Bands were stapled to pine poles and then beetles were placed at the base to observe their behavior, ability to cross the band, and their mortality 24 and 96 hours after contacting the mixture. The poles were then left outdoors and the experiment was repeated after 20 and 40 days. A similar experiment was carried out in bands placed horizontally over a table. The treatments had an influence on insect behavior and mortality (χ 2 ; P < 0,05). Azinphos methyl and INIA mix had an important repellent activity on day 0, followed by azadirachtina (χ 2 ; P < 0,05), but this decreased over time, and was similar to the control on day 40 (P = 0,34). All the treatments performed better than the control as a physical barrier (χ 2 ; P < 0,05), with polybutene having a 100% effect. Azinphos methyl and INIA mix showed the greatest mortality, even 40 days after the mixtures were applied. Mineral oil, azadirachtina and polybutene showed initially a higher mortality than the control, with azadirachtina being as effective as the traditional treatments (χ 2 ; P < 0,05), but on day 40 this difference was lost.
