Cost-Effective Approach for Modeling of Multiresonant Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters.

Multiresonant thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters have recently attracted great interest for application in organic light-emitting diodes due to their remarkable electroluminescent efficiency and narrow emission spectra. It is therefore essential to establish computational methodologies that can accurately model the excited states of these materials at manageable computational costs. With regard to MR-TADF design and their associated photophysics, previous works have highlighted the importance of wave function-based methods, at much higher computational costs, over the traditional time-dependent density functional theory approach. Herein, we employ two independent techniques built on different quantum mechanical frameworks, highly correlated wave function-based STEOM-DLPNO-CCSD and range-separated double hybrid density functional, TD-B2PLYP, to investigate their performance in predicting the excited state energies in MR-TADF emitters. We demonstrate a remarkable mean absolute deviation (MAD) of ∼0.06 eV in predicting ΔEST compared to experimental measurements across a large pool of chemically diverse MR-TADF molecules. Furthermore, both methods yield superior MAD in estimating S1 and T1 energies over earlier reported SCS-CC2 computed values [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2022, 18, 4903]. The short-range charge-transfer nature of low-lying excited states and narrow fwhm values, hallmarks of this class of emitters, are precisely captured by both approaches. Finally, we show the transferability and robustness of these methods in estimating rates of radiative and nonradiative events with adequate agreement against experimental measurements. Implementing these cost-effective computational approaches is poised to streamline the identification and evaluation of potential MR-TADF emitters, significantly reducing the reliance on costly laboratory synthesis and characterization processes.

Extended-charge-transfer excitations in crystalline non-fullerene acceptors

In organic solar cells with non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), an intra-moiety excited state, originating from intermolecular interactions in the acceptor domain, acts as a key immediate for charge separation. However, the nature of the intra-moiety state remains elusive. Here, we employ a model Hamiltonian with parameters derived from a model system of Y6 crystal to study the nature of low-lying excited states in NFAs. We find the intra-moiety excited state is mixed with local excitation and charge-transfer excitation (CTE) characters with nonnegligible contributions from extended CTEs with spatially-separated electrons and holes. The spatial extent of such a loosely bound state is susceptible to the intermolecular electronic interaction and electron–vibration interaction, which may be promoted by molecule engineering and morphology control. The findings provide an alternative strategy towards device optimization by manipulating the delocalization of intra-moiety state in organic photovoltaic materials.

Towards low-energy-light-driven bistable photoswitches: ortho-fluoroaminoazobenzenes

Thermally stable photoswitches that are driven with low-energy light are rare, yet crucial for extending the applicability of photoresponsive molecules and materials towards, e.g., living systems. Combined ortho-fluorination and -amination couples high visible light absorptivity of o-aminoazobenzenes with the extraordinary bistability of o-fluoroazobenzenes. Herein, we report a library of easily accessible o-aminofluoroazobenzenes and establish structure–property relationships regarding spectral qualities, visible light isomerization efficiency and thermal stability of the cis-isomer with respect to the degree of o-substitution and choice of amino substituent. We rationalize the experimental results with quantum chemical calculations, revealing the nature of low-lying excited states and providing insight into thermal isomerization. The synthesized azobenzenes absorb at up to 600 nm and their thermal cis-lifetimes range from milliseconds to months. The most unique example can be driven from trans to cis with any wavelength from UV up to 595 nm, while still exhibiting a thermal cis-lifetime of 81 days.Graphical abstract

Lerf\u2013Klinowski-type models of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are robust in analyzing non-covalent functionalization with porphyrins

Graphene-based nanohybrids are good candidates for various applications. However, graphene exhibits some unwanted features such as low solubility in an aqueous solution or tendency to aggregate, limiting its potential applications. On the contrary, its derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO), have excellent properties and can be easily produced in large quantities. GO/RGO nanohybrids with porphyrins were shown to possess great potential in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production, pollutant photodegradation, optical sensing, or drug delivery. Despite the rapid progress in experimental research on the porphyrin-graphene hybrids some fundamental questions about the structures and the interaction between components in these systems still remain open. In this work, we combine detailed experimental and theoretical studies to investigate the nature of the interaction between the GO/RGO and two metal-free porphyrins 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl) porphyrin (TAPP) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin (TPPH)]. The two porphyrins form stable nanohybrids with GO/RGO support, although both porphyrins exhibited a slightly higher affinity to RGO. We validated finite, Lerf–Klinowski-type (Lerf et al. in J Phys Chem B 102:4477, 1998) structural models of GO (hbox {C}_{59}hbox {O}_{26}hbox {H}_{26}) and RGO (hbox {C}_{59}hbox {O}_{17}hbox {H}_{26}) and successfully used them in ab initio absorption spectra simulations to track back the origin of experimentally observed spectral features. We also investigated the nature of low-lying excited states with high-level wavefunction-based methods and shown that states’ density becomes denser upon nanohybrid formation. The studied nanohybrids are non-emissive, and our study suggests that this is due to excited states that gain significant charge-transfer character. The presented efficient simulation protocol may ease the properties screening of new GO/RGO-nanohybrids.

Nature of Low-Lying Excited States in H-Aggregated Perylene Bisimide Dyes: Results of TD-LRC-DFT and the Mixed Exciton Model

We characterize the nature of the low-lying excited states in H-aggregated perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes in terms of the recently proposed long-range-corrected density functional theory (LRC-DFT) and the mixed intramolecular Frenkel exciton (FE) and the intermolecular charge-transfer exciton (CTE) model. The singlet vertical excitation energies of H-aggregated PBI dimers and multimers are theoretically evaluated by considering the aggregation details. It is found that the dimer absorption follows closely the spectra of PBI aggregates in solution and demonstrates strong mixing of two kinds of excitons. The experimentally observed low-energy absorption peak near 2.3 eV should not be a pure CT state but a mixed excitonic state. To model the electronic excitations of H-aggregated PBI multichromophoric oligomers, we adopt a mixed FE-CTE model Hamiltonian, whose microscopic parameters are determined from LRC-DFT/TD-LRC-DFT calculations performed on an individual chromophore or a chromophore pair. By involving four to five PBI chromophores, we have succeeded in reproducing the experimental trends of optical properties in PBI stacking, such as the large blue shift of the absorption band, the mixed FE-CTE nature of the low-energy absorption bands, and the large Stokes shift of emission spectra. The long-range correction on DFT exchange-correlation energy functionals is crucial to correctly evaluate the photophysical characteristics of pi-pi stacks.
