Study on the influence of branch slope on smoke movement mechanism in bifurcated tunnel fire under natural ventilation

In order to investigate the impact mechanism of branch slope on fire smoke in underground bifurcation spaces, a series of small-scale fire experiments were conducted. This study measured relevant data under natural ventilation conditions for four different branch slopes and six fire power levels, focusing on the highest ceiling temperature in the tunnel and the attenuation pattern of ceiling temperatures along the longitudinal direction in both the main and branch tunnels. It also analyzed the temperature field, velocity field, and pressure field at the bifurcation. The results indicate that a decrease in branch slope leads to an increase in the highest temperature in the main tunnel, primarily due to the enhanced chimney effect that intensifies the entrainment of smoke and accelerates the flow of fire smoke. A modified model for the highest temperature, considering the influence of branch slope, was proposed. Branch slope has a certain impact on the longitudinal temperature attenuation of the tunnel ceiling, with a relatively weaker effect on the main tunnel. Based on empirical formulas, a formula for longitudinal temperature attenuation involving slope, including both the main and branch tunnels, was developed. Fire smoke accelerates at the bifurcation point, a phenomenon that intensifies with an increase in the slope of the branch tunnel. The research in this paper provides a reference for fire safety issues in bifurcated tunnel structures.

Optimizing air inlet designs for enhanced natural ventilation in indoor substations: A numerical modelling and CFD simulation study

This paper investigates the ventilation and heat dissipation performance of a 110 kV indoor substation under natural ventilation conditions using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The objectives are to evaluate the influences of air inlet design parameters including location and size, and transformer load, on the airflow distribution, temperature field, and cooling efficiency. The study finds that staggered opposite inlets optimize cooling uniformity without airflow attenuation. Compared to a single inlet, the maximum transformer temperature is reduced by 1.3 °C and energy utilization increases by 9.1 % with staggered inlets. Increasing the inlet length ratio initially improves cooling until an optimal point (The length ratio is 1.10), while reducing the inlet height ratio decreases airflow and efficiency. With load increasing, the intake airflow rises but at a reduced rate, and the temperature difference can exceed 15 °C under high loads. In summary, optimizing inlet design enhances natural ventilation performance in indoor substations, but limitations exist at high loads, indicating supplemental mechanical ventilation may be required.

Simulation-based suggestions for lockdown rules in dense urban areas considering indoor-outdoor droplet transmission under natural ventilation conditions

Lockdown rules have been arbitrarily applied to curtail respiratory disease outbreaks without being certain about indoor-outdoor droplet transmission mechanisms and associated infection risks, causing enormous economic losses and arousing social unrest. This study addressed these issues by proposing lockdown rules for dense urban areas using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of indoor-outdoor droplet dispersion originating from various source locations in single-sided and cross-ventilated spaces of a six-story building in idealized urban areas with plan area densities (λp) of 0.25, 0.44, 0.59, 0.69, and 0.82. The findings suggest issuing lockdown orders based on the relative locations of the patient and vulnerable persons. For example, droplets exhaled by a patient on the upper and middle floors can enter the apartments on one or two floors below under single-sided ventilation, while the droplets are transmitted to the same level downstream spaces by cross-ventilation. Although pedestrians and building occupants pose no infection risk to each other in urban areas with λp = 0.25, they are both exposed to high droplet concentrations in dense urban areas with λp = 0.69 and 0.82. Therefore, this study recommends area lockdowns for dense urban areas to protect residents and pedestrians from virus-laden droplets carried by indoor-outdoor droplet transmission.

A dynamic one-dimensional model for simulating unsteady air-water stratified flow in sewer pipes.

Ventilation is paramount in sanitary and stormwater sewer systems to mitigate odor problems and avert pressure surges. Existing numerical models have constraints in practical applications in actual sewer systems due to insufficient airflow modeling or suitability only for steady-state conditions. This research endeavors to formulate a mathematical model capable of accurately simulating various operational conditions of sewer systems under the natural ventilation condition. The dynamic water flow is modeled using a shock-capturing MacCormack scheme. The dynamic airflow model amalgamates energy and momentum equations, circumventing laborious pressure iteration computations. This model utilizes friction coefficients at interfaces to enhance the description of the momentum exchange in the airflow and provide a logical explanation for air pressure. A systematic analysis indicates that this model can be easily adapted to include complex boundary conditions, facilitating its use for modeling airflow in real sewer networks. Furthermore, this research uncovers a direct correlation between the air-to-water flow rate ratio and the filling ratio under natural ventilation conditions, and an empirical formula encapsulating this relationship is derived. This finding offers insights for practical engineering applications.

CFD Analysis and Optimization of a Plastic Greenhouse with a Semi-Open Roof in a Tropical Area

A numerical simulation model of a natural ventilation greenhouse is helpful for improving the production and quality of greenhouse crops in tropical areas. Field experiments show that the mean coefficient of variation of indoor light intensity in four seasons was lower than 10.0%. The highest indoor temperature reached 39.3 °C during summer, while the average indoor temperature ranged from 24 °C to 26 °C in the other three seasons. The average relative humidity in the greenhouse ranged from 76% to 87% annually, which was higher and more stable than that in the external environment. A three-dimensional steady-state numerical model of the greenhouse was established based on computational fluid dynamics. Under natural ventilation conditions, the maximum error between the simulated value and the measured value of the temperature in each measuring point was 5.90%. And the average relative error between the simulated and measured values was 3.0% in the range of 0.7−1.5 m of crop cultivation height. Finally, a numerical simulation of adding side windows and expanding the vents was carried out. The results show that these methods can homogenize the airflow distribution in the greenhouse and improve the utilization efficiency of natural ventilation without more mechanical system operations.

Experimental study of ambient temperature and humidity distribution in large multi-span greenhouse based on different crop heights and ventilation conditions

Analyzing the distribution of temperature and humidity within a greenhouse is essential for optimizing ventilation strategies and improving crop quality and yield. The temperature and humidity distribution of eight-span greenhouse under natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation is studied experimentally. The influence of different crop height on temperature and humidity distribution in greenhouse and the influence of different mechanical ventilation strategies on temperature regulation were discussed. The results showed that the temperature difference between inside and outside the greenhouse decreased with the increase of crop height. Under natural ventilation conditions, the soil surface temperature is the highest, and the temperature at 0.5 m above the surface is the lowest, with the maximum temperature difference of 0.9 ℃. The temperature in the greenhouse was higher in the west and lower in the east, and the temperature difference decreased with the increase of crop height. In the east–west direction, the maximum temperature difference between tall crops, short crops and non-planted crops was 0.7 ℃, 0.9 ℃ and 1.0 ℃, respectively. High crops increase the relative humidity in the greenhouse and increase the uneven distribution of relative humidity. When growing tall crops, the difference between indoor and outdoor relative humidity is only 2.3 %. When the external shade and fan are turned on at the same time, the cooling effect is the best, the energy consumption is lower, and the temperature distribution is the most uniform. The results provide a valuable reference for optimizing greenhouse structure, formulating ventilation strategy and reducing agricultural energy consumption.

Influence of deflectors on indoor airflow velocity distribution under natural ventilation conditions

Deflectors offer a cost-effective solution for enhancing airflow distribution. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the deflector on the indoor airflow velocity distribution under natural ventilation conditions. The results obtained from numerical simulations are validated through experimental measurements using a reduced-scale model. Subsequently, the validated reduced-scale numerical model was extended to full-size rooms. A full-size numerical simulation method is used to analyze the effect of no deflector, deflectors with different opening width-to-height ratios and deflectors with different opening shapes on the percentage of indoor velocity partitions under natural ventilation conditions. The findings reveal that the judicious installation of deflectors can enhance indoor airflow velocity distribution and increase the percentage of the indoor comfort zone. Deflectors with different opening width-to-height ratios exert distinct influences on indoor airflow velocity distribution. When the deflector opening width-to-height ratio is set at 7/6, the indoor comfort zone percentage reaches its maximum at 75.98%. Furthermore, the shape of the deflector’s opening significantly affects indoor airflow velocity distribution, and when the opening shape is a rhombus shape of 4.00 cm × 9.00 cm, the proportion of indoor velocity comfort zone is the largest, which is 75.56%. This study provides a reference for the design and practice of natural ventilation in buildings.

Burning characteristic and ceiling temperature of moving fires in a tunnel: A comparative study

Moving fire is a very important fire scenario in highway tunnel and subway tunnel. Compared to fixed fire sources, there is still limited research on moving fires in tunnels. In order to reveal the burning characteristics and evolutionary mechanisms of moving fires in tunnels, this study conducted reduced scale tunnel fire experiments on moving fires under natural ventilation conditions (Movefire) at travelling speeds ranging from 0.5 m/s to 2.0 m/s, as well as fixed fires under longitudinal ventilation (Ventfire) velocities ranging from 0.5 m/s to 2.0 m/s. The results demonstrate that it is unreasonable to solely use Ventfire experiments as a substitute for Movefire experiments to study fire development and ceiling smoke temperature distributions. When the travelling speed of fire and the ventilation velocity were equal, the HRRs of Movefires were less than those of Ventfires. At the same relative moving velocity of 0.5 m/s, Ventfire received more fresh air to increase burning intensity, while Movefire experienced decreases in thermal feedback and burning intensity. The Movefire smoke temperature rise was small and short in duration, while the Ventfire smoke temperature rise was large and long in duration. Furthermore, the dimensionless maximum ceiling temperature rise of the Movefire experiment was lower than that of the Ventfire experiment. And then a modified ceiling temperature model applicable to the Movefire experiment was proposed by introducing a speed correction factor.

Characteristics of smoke movement in subway evacuation corridor under different blockage ratios

This study employed FLUENT to analyse smoke movement and temperature distribution in an evacuation corridor with varying blockage ratios, focusing on the subway tunnel section of Fuzhou Metro Line 4. The simulation results revealed that under natural ventilation condition, the smoke spread area in the evacuation corridor is significantly greater for the high blockage ratio tunnel than for the low blockage ratio tunnel in the tunnel’s length direction, and the entire temperature distribution in the tunnel’s height direction is also high. Following the introduction of longitudinal ventilation, smoke spread in the evacuation corridor and the tunnel ceiling upstream of the fire source are effectively controlled, with smoke suppression movement in the evacuation corridor being significantly faster than that near the tunnel ceiling. As ventilation time increases, the back-layering length of smoke in the evacuation corridor gradually shortens. Within 150 s of ventilation, the critical safety distance below the safety temperature for a low blockage ratio is shorter than that for a high blockage ratio tunnel. In conclusion, longitudinal ventilation increases the cooling rate of high-temperature smoke in a high blockage ratio tunnel, but the influence of high ventilation velocity on evacuation cannot be ignored. Practical application This study provides recommendations for the evacuation plan and procedures under longitudinal ventilation. It is advisable to consider lowering the height of the evacuation corridor in the tunnel from the rail surface, thereby creating a more extensive safety space for personnel evacuation. Additionally, the implementation of prominent marks and voice prompts in the upstream area of the fire outbreak is crucial. This ensures that personnel are directed to evacuate from the upstream section during emergency situations.

Simulation and Optimization Study on the Ventilation Performance of High-Rise Buildings Inspired by the White Termite Mound Chamber Structure.

High-rise buildings often use mechanical systems to assist ventilation to maintain the stability of their internal environments, and the energy consumption of mechanical ventilation poses a great challenge to urban environments and energy systems. The ventilation system of termite mounds with a combination of internal main and attached chambers is one of the classic examples of nature's bionic approach to maintaining a stable internal ventilation environment for large-volume structures. In this study, based on the inspiration of the internal ventilation chamber structure of bionic termite mounds, we constructed seven high-rise building chamber ventilation models based on the chamber structure of termite mounds with main chambers, main chambers plus single-attached chambers (three types), and main chambers plus double-attached chambers (three types) under natural ventilation conditions, aiming at obtaining the optimal low-energy and high-efficiency chamber ventilation model for bionic termite mounds in high-rise buildings. (1) The wind speed and wind pressure of the high-rise building with the addition of the bionic termite mound chamber structure is higher than that of the traditional chamber-free high-rise building in the sample floors, the maximal difference of the wind speed between the two models is 0.05 m/s, and the maximal difference of the wind speed of the single building is 0.14 m/s, with the maximal difference of the wind speed of the single building being 0.14 m/s; and the natural ventilation environment can be satisfied by a high-rise building with a chamber. (2) After increasing the single-attached chamber structure of the bionic termite mound, the difference in wind speed of different floors is 0.15 m/s, which is 0.10 m/s higher than that of the high-rise building model with the main chamber only. (3) Under the bionic termite mound chamber high-rise building double-attached chamber model, the maximum difference in wind speed of each floor sampling point can reach 0.19 m/s, while the wind pressure cloud map shows a stable wind environment system. (4) Two attached chambers are added at A and B of the high-rise building to form the a4 model of the chamber of the high-rise building with a double-chamber bionic termite mound. According to the results, it can be seen that the model of the nine floor sampling points of the maximum wind speed difference has six places for the highest value, and the single building wind speed difference for the minimum value of 0.10 m/s. The study aims to optimize the connectivity and ventilation performance of high-rise buildings under natural ventilation conditions and to promote the green and sustainable design of high-rise buildings.

Prediction of Ammonia Production Levels in Broiler Houses by Mass Balance under Forced and Natural Ventilation Conditions

One of the main contaminant in animal houses is ammonia. As being a greenhouse gas ammonia emission from animal houses influence the atmospheric environment which then triggers global warming. A calculation method for predicting gas production of ammonia rate inside an animal house is developed. This method is based on mass balance equilibrium. Relations between inside and outside environmental conditions and the ammonia concentrations has been observed. Confirmation of the developed equation has been tested in some selected broiler houses raised on litter and under natural and forced ventilation conditions. Production of ammonia rate inside the broiler house was calculated as 7.98 mg.s-1 under forced ventilation, and it was 26.63 mg.s-1 under natural ventilation conditions. The developed approach can be useful to farmers, agricultural or environmental engineers and for the smart agriculture technologies.

Thermal and daylighting evaluation: the basic of energy efficient house design at the earliest stages

The increase in electrical energy used in residential buildings is due to their designs being less responsive to the local climate. This research aims to analyse the implementation of energy efficient house design principles for the tropical, hilly area. The tropical, hilly area has distinctive climate characteristics compared to the lowland tropical area. Thus, it resulted in many challenges in providing internal comfort conditions for the occupants by architectural design only. Palu, Sulawesi Tengah Province of Indonesia, was selected as the case study location. The analyses were carried out by modelling three sample houses and simulating their daylighting and natural ventilation condition. Three house models were built considering several design parameters such as house orientation, geometry, plan, type and position of the openings. Simulations settings included different building materials, the number of occupants, operational schedules and electricity usage schedules. The operative temperature was used for thermal analysis. Meanwhile, spatial daylight Autonomy (sDA) of 100/50% was used for daylighting analysis. The result of the study provided the visualisations of thermal and daylighting conditions for each sample model. Design models of energy efficient houses suitable for the tropical hilly area were also recommended.

2330. Ventilation Strategies Based on an Aerodynamic Analysis During a Large-Scale SARS-CoV-2 Outbreak in an Acute-Care Hospital

Abstract Background The severity of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has decreased owing to antiviral agents and herd immunity; however, transmission among hospitalised patients could be fatal. Therefore, strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in medical institutions are crucial. This study aimed to investigate ventilation strategies to prevent nosocomial transmission of COVID-19. Methods We retrospectively conducted an epidemiological investigation of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak between 12 February and 5 March 2021 in a referral teaching hospital in Korea. The pressure difference and air change per hour (ACH) of the rooms were measured in the largest outbreak ward. Airflow dynamics were measured based on the opening or closing of the outside window and door by using an oil droplet generator, indoor air quality sensor, and particle image velocimetry in the index patient’s room, corridor, and opposite rooms. Results During the outbreak, 283 COVID-19 cases were identified. The largest outbreak occurred at the 8th floor followed by the 9th and 7th floors of the main building. According to an epidemiological investigation, the SARS-CoV-2 spread occurred sequentially from the index room to the nearest room, especially the opposite. The aerodynamic study demonstrated that droplet-like particles in the index room diffused through the corridor and the opposite room through the opening door (Figure 1). The mean ACH of the rooms on the 8th floor was 1.44; the air supply volume was 15.9% larger than the exhaust volume, forming a positive pressure. Compared with the open-door condition, droplet-like particles did not diffuse into an adjacent room facing each other in the closed-door condition. The concentration of droplet-like particles in the ward was lowered during natural ventilation, and their spread to an adjacent room facing the corridor was also reduced (Figure 2). Conclusion The spread of droplet-like particles between rooms could be attributed to the pressure difference between the rooms and corridor. Theoretical and numerical study on smoke descent during tunnel fires under natural ventilation condition

The smoke stratification and the smoke descent along a tunnel are of the utmost importance for personnel evacuation. The paper investigates the smoke descent along a tunnel during a naturally ventilated tunnel fire. A theoretical model is developed to predict the smoke depth below the ceiling along the tunnel. A series of numerical simulations of full-scale tunnel fires are conducted to compare with the developed model, and some coefficients such as the entrainment coefficient are determined from the simulation results. The concepts of critical moment and critical distance are proposed to characterize the smoke descent along the tunnel. The results show that as the smoke spreads longitudinally, the smoke depth below the tunnel ceiling continuously increases. The temperature decay along the tunnel due to heat losses and air entrainment at the smoke layer interface is considered as the main parameter for the smoke descent. After the vitiated air returns back to the fire source, the smoke stratification in the entire tunnel will be significantly reduced. The smoke layer depth along the tunnel based on the temperature distribution is relatively stable in the process of smoke development, which is not sensitive to the HRR, but influenced by the tunnel width, and this method could only be used before the critical moment. The outcomes of this study could provide references for a better understanding of smoke movement in naturally ventilated tunnels and provide technical guidelines for fire safety designers.

Novel indicators to evaluate PCM performance under different ventilation strategies by considering the impact of climate change

Due to climate change, the cooling energy demand in the building sector is projected to increase significantly. According to International Energy Agency, for a sustainable future, energy-efficient technology should be implemented in buildings. The potential of Phase change materials (PCM) for reducing building energy consumption has been widely acknowledged by researchers. However, the selection of appropriate PCM and its latent heat exploitation is crucial when PCM is integrated into the building envelope. This research evaluates the implementation of PCM for building cooling energy savings (CES) with climate change in thirty-nine cities located in 13 different zones of the future Koppen-Geiger climate map. Novel performance indicators, energy charging, and discharging coefficients are presented, to evaluate the PCM performance based on the exact latent heat exploitation. A range of PCMs (PCM 18–32) were assessed by coupling PCM with free night ventilation and changeover ventilation using the hybrid downscaled weather files for 2095. The results showed that the optimum PCM varied from PCM27 to PCM30 resulting in substantial CES (1214 kWh-7240 kWh) in all zones except Cfb, Dfa, and Dfb under the indoor HVAC controlled conditions. In natural ventilation conditions, combining PCM with free night ventilation increased CES up to 2490 kWh compared to night ventilation alone, while combining PCM with changeover ventilation, reduced energy consumption by up to 2772 kWh compared to changeover ventilation alone. Overall, free night ventilation with PCM improved the CES by up to a maximum of 35% while changeover ventilation in combination with PCM further increased the CES by up to 96% and appeared to be the best strategy for maximizing the CES in all climate zones.

Ventilation methods to prevent the spread of airborne pathogens from teachers to students

This study investigates different ventilation systems to prevent the spread of airborne pathogens from teachers in an elementary school classroom setting. The analyzed systems include a general mechanical ventilation system and a hybrid ventilation system. The hybrid ventilation system used a combination of natural ventilation, general mechanical ventilation, and local mechanical ventilation systems. For natural ventilation, wind velocities of 1.1 m/s and 0.11 m/s were considered. To analyze the patterns of the spread of airborne pathogens, the indoor airflow patterns and concentrations of airborne pathogens (passive scalar) were examined using Star-CCM + . Comparing the methods confirmed that natural ventilation was more effective than general mechanical ventilation in removing the airborne pathogens discharged from the teacher. The proposed hybrid ventilation method with combined natural and mechanical ventilation also showed promise in removing airborne pathogens. However, for natural ventilation with low wind velocity, the buoyancy effect around the occupants creates airflow vortices in the front of the classroom which spread airborne pathogens from the teacher toward the students seated in the front of the classroom. Furthermore, operating a local ventilation system close to the teacher reduced the spread of airborne pathogens that occurred under natural ventilation conditions with low wind velocity.

Smoke movement and control in longitudinal ventilated tunnel fires with cross-passages

This paper studies the characteristics of smoke movement and control in longitudinal ventilated tunnel fires with cross-passages through numerical modeling. Previous reports mainly focused on fires in single-hole tunnel, however, tunnels with cross-passages have been widely applied in real life, the cross-passages between main tunnels provide additional path for air and fire smoke, and significantly affect smoke temperature and back-layering length, which has not been studied in the past. Hence, full-scale simulations were conducted considering different heat release rates, fire locations, longitudinal ventilation velocities, and cross-passage intervals in this study. It shows that the smoke temperature distribution with or without cross-passages is almost the same under natural ventilation condition, while the temperature gradually increases with the decrease of interval of cross-passages under longitudinal ventilation condition. Due to the more air leakage, the smoke back-layering length increases with decreasing interval of cross-passage. The air leakage mass through the cross-passage was then characterized by the interval of cross-passages and fire location. Considering fire position and interval of cross-passages, the actual ventilation velocity is used to establish a new smoke back-layering length model. A basic understanding was provided by new findings in this study for smoke movement and control in tunnel fires with cross-passages.

Assessment of residential settlement planning in Medina, based on climate adaptability

The theme of World Habitat Day 2020 was Housing for All: “A Better Urban Future”. In light of this postulate, this study aims to determine the climate response of traditional urban morphology to the Sousse climate, which allows us to assess the effectiveness of ancient urban planning considered a model of low-energy and low-carbon. This study purposes to help future urban planners in the early phase of the project and preserve their urban heritage. Design strategies such as indoor and outdoor daylighting and different natural ventilation conditions were studied to assess ancient city planning. The results show that the grouped houses in linear blocks with courtyards promote natural ventilation, solar gain, and thermal comfort control. This self-contained, compact urban morphology is beneficial in the semi-arid climate; it reduces heat loss through the exterior envelope and creates a comfortable atmosphere inside and outside the block, especially in summer.

Control of Natural Ventilation Opening to Achieve Energy Saving Performance and Thermal Comfort in Office Room

In recent years, the number of office buildings that introduce natural ventilation (NV) is being increased to save energy. However, operating NV systems with NV opening device fully open could lower thermal comfort, depending on meteorological condition. Therefore, automatically-controlled NV systems can generally work only for a relatively short period of time. In order to keep both energy saving performance and thermal comfort even when outdoor temperature is low in the mid-seasons, it is necessary to understand the relation between NV conditions and the indoor environment. In this paper, the indoor environment is evaluated changing NV conditions by using CFD for a generalized office room model. Four types of NV inlet system were assumed, i.e., high peri-counter (Type 1), low peri-counter (Type 2), slot-type downward inlet (Type 3), and slot-type horizontal inlet (Type 4). Twenty conditions were analyzed for each type, varying the outdoor air temperature and NV flowrate as parameters. As indices of thermal comfort, average vertical temperature difference within perimeter zone and ADPI in the occupied zone were calculated. For each of NV systems, simplified equations to calculate Nmax from indoor/outdoor temperature difference are finally to be proposed, which may be considered for NV opening control in operating NV systems.

The article substantiates the statement that the atmosphere of quarries is inseparable from the atmosphere of the territories adjacent to them. The manifestation of this relationship is expressed in an increase in air pollution in the areas where quarries are located, and in air pollution of quarries from external sources (dumps, factories, plants, power plants, plots of land with no vegetation, etc.). Measures to reduce air pollution inside quarries simultaneously reduce the harmful impact of open-pit mining on the environment. The use of artificial ventilation without dust and gas suppression can lead to the release of the large number of hazards outside the quarry and will have a very negative impact on the characteristics of the atmosphere of the surrounding areas. Therefore, when choosing means to combat hazards, it is required to give preference to means that trap or suppress dust and neutralize gases in the places of their formation. The influence of the main factors and parameters of the development of open-pit mining on the sanitary and hygienic conditions in the quarry and adjacent territories is analyzed and substantiated. When assessing the influence of various factors on the atmosphere of quarries and the air environment of the surrounding space, it is required also to remember about external sources of pollution, which are either an integral part of the technological chain of mining operations (external dumps, roads, warehouses, etc.), or simply located near the quarries. Sometimes the influence of external sources alone leads to exceeding the maximum allowable concentration of dust in a quarry. The influence of the ventilation schemes of quarries on both the air exchange in the developed spaces and the atmosphere of the surrounding territories is also of interest. Recommendations are given that can be useful in the design of quarries, when, in particular, there are several options for technological solutions and the conditions of natural ventilation of the developed space may be decisive. The problems of open pit aerology and the protection of the air environment of the surrounding territories should be considered inextricably linked due to their close mutual influence. To reduce the level of air pollution, the necessary measures should be envisaged, involving the resources of both quarries and local governments. The study of the problems of protecting the atmosphere should not be limited to the issues of its pollution, but also cover other air-related problems of deterioration in the working and living conditions of all those living in the region.
