Upholding Sovereignty and Constitutional Mandates: The Philippine Supreme Court’s Ruling on the Tripartite Agreement for Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking in the South China Sea

Abstract This article examines the Philippine Supreme Court’s landmark ruling declaring the Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking (jmsu) unconstitutional, emphasizing its implications for Philippine foreign policy and territorial disputes in the South China Sea. The jmsu, an agreement between China, Vietnam, and the Philippines for joint exploration in a contested maritime area, was challenged for contravening the Philippine Constitution’s provisions on national sovereignty over natural resources. The decision reaffirms the Philippines’ sovereign rights and sets a legal precedent emphasizing the primacy of the Philippine Constitution in international agreements on natural resource exploration. This article discusses the decision’s significant impact on Philippine foreign policy, the ongoing territorial and maritime disputes in the South China Sea, and its wider relevance to diplomacy and international law. Analysis of Natural Gas Hydrate Resource Content based on Kriging Algorithm and TOPSIS Evaluation Model

The exploration and evaluation system for natural gas hydrate resources is currently incomplete. Research on evaluation methods for the quantity of natural gas hydrate resources is an important part of theoretical studies and is crucial in guiding exploration and development activities. In this paper, we establish the total effective thickness (Z), average porosity of the reservoir ( ), and the absolute value of average saturation ( ) as indicators for evaluating the quantity of natural gas hydrate resources. We then statistically analyze the data from various exploration points to obtain the values of these indicators. Subsequently, we employ the Kriging algorithm to interpolate the data, obtaining a more densely distributed grid. Following this, we establish a TOPSIS evaluation model to calculate the scores of each exploration point. Finally, a heat map is generated to represent the distribution of resource quantity scores in various regions. The results indicate that natural gas hydrate resources are primarily distributed in the upper left, lower right, and directly below the detection area.

Deep generative networks for multivariate fullstack seismic data inversion using inverse autoregressive flows

The simultaneous prediction of the subsurface distribution of facies and acoustic impedance (IP) from fullstack seismic data requires solving an inverse problem and is fundamental in natural resources exploration, carbon capture and storage, and environmental risk management. In recent years, deep generative models (DGM), such as variational autoencoders (VAE) and generative adversarial networks (GAN), were proposed to reproduce complex facies patterns honoring prior geological information. Variational Bayesian inference using inverse autoregressive flows (IAF) can be performed to infer the solution to a geophysical inverse problem from the encoded latent space of such pre-trained DGM. Successful applications of such approach on crosshole ground-penetrating radar synthetic data inversion demonstrated that the technique's accuracy is comparable to that of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) inference methods, while significantly reducing the computational cost. Nonetheless, these application examples did not account for the spatial uncertainty affecting the facies-dependent continuous physical property, from which the geophysical data are calculated. This uncertainty can significantly affect the inversion accuracy and its applicability to real data. In this work, specific VAE and GAN architectures are proposed to simultaneously predict facies and co-located IP, while accounting for their spatial uncertainties. The two types of generative networks are used in Bayesian inversion with IAF for the inversion of seismic data. The results are found to reproduce the statistics of the training images and solve the seismic inversion problem accurately, comparably to MCMC inversion. Furthermore, advantages and limitations of the two DGMs are evaluated by comparing the results obtained.

Ramsay 1 and Ramsay 2, learnings from the first natural hydrogen exploration wells in Australia

In October and November 2023, Gold Hydrogen, an ASX listed natural hydrogen explorer, drilled Ramsay 1 and Ramsay 2, the first natural hydrogen exploration wells in Australia. Twinning an historic well, the Ramsay Oil Bore 1 well in PEL687 in South Australia, the objective of the Ramsay 1 and Ramsay 2 wells was to find movable naturally generated hydrogen in the subsurface and establish the presence of a commercially attractive natural hydrogen resource base. This paper highlights some of the learnings from the process of designing and executing these natural hydrogen exploration wells and how the initial hurdles of demonstrating the presence of a hydrogen resource were overcome during the drilling phase. Using modified standard drilling technology and dedicated hydrogen detection tools (calibrated real time mud gas analysis), Gold Hydrogen has shown that exploration for natural hydrogen resources can be done safely and cost effectively. The main learnings included the application of a calibrated hydrogen detection methodology to derive a pseudo hydrogen saturation log and the successful selection of drilling mud and casing compliant with long term hydrogen exposure. As global drilling for natural hydrogen is still in its infancy, these modifications to the exploration well design and execution could have a significant impact on future drilling for this highly attractive carbon free energy source. With a program of seismic data acquisition and follow-up wells planned for 2024, Gold Hydrogen is leading a group of Australian natural hydrogen explorers, who are trying to unlock commercial natural hydrogen resources in the world.

Biodiversity and Utilization Patterns of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Africa

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) constitute a diverse array of botanical taxa cultivated or harvested primarily for their therapeutic properties and, or aromatic compounds. This study describes the biodiversity and usage patterns of medicinal and aromatic plants in Africa, offering a comprehensive exploration of the continent's rich natural resources. Through a meticulous examination of the diverse flora, the research sheds light on the historical, cultural, and ecological significance of these plants in traditional medicine and local practices. The objectives of the study include the evaluation of the diversity of medicinal and aromatic plants present in Africa, as well as the examination of their utilization, encompassing both traditional methodologies and modern applications. The findings of this study contribute to the ongoing discourse on sustainable biodiversity management and underscore the significance of these plants in both traditional and modern contexts.

Cell based and In vivo systematic evaluation of some Egyptian plant extracts targeting breast cancer

The prevalence of breast cancer as a significant public health concern necessitates continued exploration of natural resources for novel anti-cancer agents is crucial. Material and methodsAnticancer activity of plant extracts on monolayer breast cancer cell line (MCF7) with lower levels of toxicity towards normal (RPE1) underwent further assessment using a three-dimensional model (3D). The extract's effects were investigated through multiple assays including apoptosis induction using quantifying cleaved cytokeratin-18 (CK18) and DNA fragmentation. Additionally, the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was quantitative using real-time PCR. The median lethal dose (LD50) was determined by the acute oral toxicity, while biomarkers associated with tumorigenesis, metastasis, and cell death were quantified by ELISA. ResultsLimoniastrum monopetalum and Bauhinia variegata exhibited the most potent antitumor efficacy among the investigated extracts. They demonstrated potent cytotoxicity against MCF7 with no significant effect on hTERT RPE-1, with an IC50 of 100 μM. The extract demonstrated effectiveness in killing cancer cells within 3D tumor-like structures, induced apoptosis through caspase-3 activation and cleavage of cytokeratin-18, up-regulated the tumor suppressor p53, down-regulated the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 gene, and caused DNA fragmentation. Acute oral toxicity studies in mice indicated low toxicity, and in a syngeneic mouse tumor model, the extract significantly inhibited tumor growth, suggesting its potential for further development. ConclusionLimoniastrum monopetalum and Bauhinia variegata exhibited the most potent antitumor efficacy among the investigated extracts.

Using single-beam bathymetric data in digital depth models, for viewing the Sargassum furcatum bed in Cabo Frio Island

Single-beam bathymetric surveys are used in several areas, namely, in the assessment of underwater geography as determining factor for navigation; conducting scientific studies and exploration of oil and natural resources. The data acquired in this type of surveys offers a grid of X, Y and Z sample points. For the correct spatial visualization in a continuous data grid, it is necessary to apply mathematical interpolators to estimate the depth value in the points not covered by the survey. The​​​​​​​ Sargassum furcatum bed presents on Cabo Frio island is the target of several studies due the importance of its primary productivity and biodiversity. It was verified after the elaboration of the digital depth models, characteristics regarding the location and spatial distribution of the Sargassum furcatum bed. Based on results obtained in the construction of the digital depth models, it was possible to demonstrate that the association of surveys, mining and interpolation methods for single-beam bathymetry data, developed during this study, were suitable to assess the visualization the Sargassum furcatum bed in Cabo Frio Island, Arraial do Cabo - RJ.

The main purpose of current research is to analyze the impact of natural resource exploration on sustainable growth in developing economies. Annual panel data of 57 developing countries from 2000 to 2021 has been used for research analysis. First, this study uses a simple Panel Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) estimation technique to examine the long-run and short-run link among the variables. The results depict that in the long run natural resource exploration has a significant negative impact on sustainable growth. This finding supports the presence of the resource curse hypothesis. Besides this, the present study decomposes the policy variable (mining contribution index) into its two shocks i.e. positive shock and negative shock by applying a panel non-linear ARDL approach. The long-run outcomes depict that both the coefficients of partial positive and partial negative sums of natural resource rents are negative and significant. Furthermore, the research outcomes explain that financial openness and international trade have a substantial and positive impact on sustainable progress. The policy implications for current research are to avoid bad rent-seeking behaviors and to escape from non-productive activities to achieve sustainable development. Furthermore, there is a dire need to adopt and support environmentally friendly policies.

Phase change of the Ordovician hydrocarbon in the Tarim Basin: A case study from the Halahatang–Shunbei area

Abstract To clarify the genetic mechanism for phase change of the hydrocarbon in the ultra-deep reservoirs, a case study from the Ordovician hydrocarbon in the Halahatang–Shunbei area (HSA), Tarim Basin, NW China, was conducted. The results show that the Ordovician reservoirs in the HSA are characterized as multi-phase reservoirs with a lateral co-existence of condensates, volatile-oil reservoirs, normal oil reservoirs, and heavy oil reservoirs. From north to south, there are regular variations in the geochemical characteristics of the Ordovician hydrocarbon in different blocks of the HSA, showing an increasing trend in GOR, dryness coefficients, methane contents, methane carbon isotope values, and ethane carbon isotope values, while a decreasing trend in oil densities and wax contents. Because the same Cambrian–Lower Ordovician source for the Ordovician hydrocarbon is observed and the kerogen-cracking gas is dominated in the HSA, the regular variations of the hydrocarbon phases and geochemical characteristics can be interpreted as records of biodegradation and multistage oil–gas filling rather than controlled by the source rock organofacies, oil cracking, and gas invasion. The formation mechanism of the Ordovician multi-phase reservoirs in the HSA suggests that the deep strata of the Tarim Basin hold potential for the exploration of natural gas resources.

Mapping the Earth's igneous record: a geospatial database approach

Abstract The record of igneous activity (magmatism and volcanism) can significantly affect natural resource exploration and exploitation, including the search for hydrocarbons, critical minerals, natural hydrogen and geothermal energy sources, as well as using mafic igneous rocks as storage sites for CO 2 . These effects will vary depending on the nature and timing of the activity, the structural framework and the crustal architecture of the affected country-rock. To understand these effects and the interplay with other factors, we must first know the igneous record's distribution, timing, and petrology. In this paper, we describe a new geospatial database of the igneous rock record designed to provide a baseline digital resource that is application-agnostic and can be applied across the broadest range of research and resource exploration activities. We discuss the challenges we have faced and solved at each of the three main stages of geospatial mapping: database design, database population and database visualization. This includes the importance of a comprehensive audit trail so that users can differentiate between well and poorly-constrained interpretations, helping identify areas requiring additional work and data acquisition. The result is a geospatial database that will facilitate a better understanding of the Earth system and natural resource exploration.

Financial Performance and Total Resources: Trend and sensitivity Analysis of Indian Oil Exploration and Production Companies

The firms involved in the exploration and production (E&P) of natural gas resources and crude oil play a crucial role in the energy sector and contribute to the economy. Exploration and production refer to discovering, drilling, and extracting natural gas resources and crude oil from beneath the earth’s surface. Exploration and production firms provide a base for the downstream companies to make crude oil consumable. The financial performance of the downstream companies depends on the cost efficiency of the E&P firms. The purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between the total resources and measures of financial performance. The study is based on secondary data and financial ratios, index numbers applied to get the financial performance, and variability of financial performance. Correlation is used to get the trend and quick impact of variability on the total assets on the financial measures in the short and long run. The study found that while return on total resources is positively influenced in the long run, profitability based on sales and short-term paying ability is negatively governed by the absolute quantity of expansion of all available resources. Although the long-term association is positive, there is a short-term lag in the positive increase of the total resources on the ROA. Overall, based on their average absolute amount of total resources, relatively, the mutual study of the mean growth rate of all resources and financial indicators of Indian E&P explore negativity.

Seismic Tomography 2024

ABSTRACT Seismic tomography is the most abundant source of information about the internal structure of the Earth at scales ranging from a few meters to thousands of kilometers. It constrains the properties of active volcanoes, earthquake fault zones, deep reservoirs and storage sites, glaciers and ice sheets, or the entire globe. It contributes to outstanding societal problems related to natural hazards, resource exploration, underground storage, and many more. The recent advances in seismic tomography are being translated to nondestructive testing, medical ultrasound, and helioseismology. Nearly 50 yr after its first successful applications, this article offers a snapshot of modern seismic tomography. Focused on major challenges and particularly promising research directions, it is intended to guide both Earth science professionals and early-career scientists. The individual contributions by the coauthors provide diverse perspectives on topics that may at first seem disconnected but are closely tied together by a few coherent threads: multiparameter inversion for properties related to dynamic processes, data quality, and geographic coverage, uncertainty quantification that is useful for geologic interpretation, new formulations of tomographic inverse problems that address concrete geologic questions more directly, and the presentation and quantitative comparison of tomographic models. It remains to be seen which of these problems will be considered solved, solved to some extent, or practically unsolvable over the next decade.

Human security, sustainable livelihoods and development: the case of the Niger Delta region in Nigeria

This article critically examines the complex connections between human security and livelihoods in relation to development in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. This region is pervaded by a web of socio-economic and environmental issues that have severely impacted the lives of people and communities due to environmental degradation. For example, the exploration and exploitation of natural resources in this region has had extensive consequences on the livelihood activities of the people. Moreover, the Niger Delta has been affected by persistent social instabilities and a lack of access to some of the basic assets of security, including personal, health, economic and environmental security. While the concepts of livelihoods and environmental degradation are reasonably well understood in the context of the Niger Delta, the complex links between them in relation to human security remain unexplored. To examine how environmental degradation impacts livelihoods, this article explores the concept of human security, following a rights-based approach in line with the sustainable livelihood framework. Furthermore, it draws from semi-structured interviews conducted in the region on the lived experiences of community members, such as farmers and fishers, and their challenges in bridging generational crises in the context of environmental degradation. I argue that understanding the interconnectedness of security and livelihood issues in the context of such crises provides an innovative approach to considering both environmental and social factors in sustainable development, which is essential for the overall well-being of people in the region.

Dietary Variation Effect on Life History Traits and Energy Storage in Neotropical Species of Drosophila (Diptera; Drosophilidae).

The ability of an organism to respond to nutritional stress can be a plastic character under the action of natural selection, affecting several characteristics, including life history and energy storage. The genus Drosophila (Diptera; Drosophilidae) presents high variability regarding natural resource exploration. However, most works on this theme have studied the model species D. melanogaster Meigen, 1830 and little is known about Neotropical drosophilids. Here we evaluate the effects of three diets, with different carbohydrate-to-protein ratios, on life history (viability and development time) and metabolic pools (triglycerides, glycogen, and total soluble protein contents) of three Neotropical species of Drosophila: D. maculifrons Duda, 1927; D. ornatifrons Duda, 1927, both of the subgenus Drosophila Sturtevant, 1939, and D. willistoni Sturtevant, 1916 of the subgenus Sophophora Sturtevant, 1939. Our results showed that only D. willistoni was viable on all diets, D. maculifrons was not viable on the sugary diet, while D. ornatifrons was barely viable on this diet. The sugary diet increased the development time of D. willistoni and D. ornatifrons, and D. willistoni glycogen content. Thus, the viability of D. maculifrons and D. ornatifrons seems to depend on a certain amount of protein and/or a low concentration of carbohydrate in the diet. A more evident effect of the diets on triglyceride and protein pools was detected in D. ornatifrons, which could be related to the adult attraction to dung and carrion baited pitfall as food resource tested in nature. Our results demonstrated that the evolutionary history and differential adaptations to natural macronutrient resources are important to define the amplitude of response that a species can present when faced with dietary variation.

An ameliorated localization algorithm for compensating stratification effect based on improved underwater salp swarm optimization technique

SummaryThe underwater acoustic sensor network is a fundamental source for ocean exploration. The potential applications of underwater acoustic sensor network (UASN) include seismic imaging, disaster prevention, mine reconnaissance, pollution monitoring, exploration of natural resources, and military surveillance. To acquire accurate results, implementing all applications of underwater sensor networks requires an adequate network connection and communication technology. The precise placement of underwater sensor nodes needs to be identified in order to achieve effective communication. To accomplish the requirement, the paper presents an efficient localization algorithm to compensate the stratification effect based on an improved underwater salp swarm optimization technique (LAS‐IUSSOT). To compute the location of sensor nodes with high accuracy, the nodes are initially randomly deployed in three‐dimensional underwater acoustic sensor network (3D‐UASN). After that, the hybridization of centroid‐based localization and the ray theory technique is used, and then, the degree of coplanarity is analyzed among the underwater sensor nodes. Then, the computation of the location of unknown nodes is performed using improved underwater salp swarm optimization technique (IUSSOT) to obtain the optimized location and compensate the impact of the stratification. The comparison of the simulation results of the existing algorithm and the proposed algorithm is performed. The LAS‐IUSSOT achieves 40.46% and 28.00% accuracy in terms of localization of underwater sensor nodes for both the sparse and dense regions in 3D‐UASN. The LAS‐IUSSOT achieves 49.39% and 62.57% accuracy in terms of ranging of underwater sensor nodes for both the sparse and dense regions in 3D‐UASN. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithm in terms of localization and ranging accuracy in both sparse and dense regions in 3D‐UASN, root mean square error (RMSE), normalized localization error (NLE), computation time, and convergence rate.

Extreme organic matter enrichment in the Ediacaran Doushantuo formation: New constraints from the NE Sichuan basin, China

The Yangtze Block is a highly prospective area for Ediacaran natural gas exploration in recent years, especially the Doushantuo Formation, a vital source rock for organic-rich hydrocarbon and a shale gas reservoir in the region. However, understanding of the Ediacaran organic-rich source rocks systematically has been limited due to the heterogeneous accumulation of organic matter and confusing paleoclimatological and paleoceanographic conditions. Such a scenario is not conducive to further exploration of the deep Ediacaran natural gas resources or understanding the evolution of early Earth. In this study, based on two new well drillings in the northeastern Sichuan Basin, the integrated sedimentological and geochemical investigations were focused on the Ediacaran middle−upper Doushantuo Formation (DST) fine-grained rocks interval. Results show this set of black organic-rich shales (total organic carbon up to 13.97%) deposited under episodic warming climate during an otherwise protracted cooling trend. These frequent climatic fluctuations intensified hydrological circulation, which together with the concurrent hydrothermal activity and the Neoproterozoic Oxidation Event, led to eutrophication of surface seawater. Under these circumstances, a substantial enhancement in primary productivity driven by algae blooming, subsequently resulted in consume excess dissolved oxygen in seawater during the degradation stage and anoxic-euxinic bottom water expansion. Consequently, the high paleoproductivity controlled the extreme organic matter enrichment during the Doushantuo time and formed the DST 4 organic-rich shales in the Chengkou and Nanhua subbasins. In contrast, although the DST 3 shales still deposited under a high productivity condition, the shallower sedimentary environments with anoxic-oxic bottom water conditions resulted in greater variation in total organic carbon contents.

Hierarchical Semantic-Guided Contextual Structure-Aware Network for Spectral Satellite Image Dehazing

Haze or cloud always shrouds satellite images, obscuring valuable geographic information for military surveillance, natural calamity surveillance and mineral resource exploration. Satellite image dehazing (SID) provides the possibility for better applications of satellite images. Most of the existing dehazing methods are tailored for natural images and are not very effective for satellite images with non-homogeneous haze since the semantic structure information and inconsistent attenuation are not fully considered. To tackle this problem, this study proposes a hierarchical semantic-guided contextual structure-aware network (SCSNet) for spectral satellite image dehazing. Specifically, a hybrid CNN–Transformer architecture integrated with a hierarchical semantic guidance (HSG) module is presented to learn semantic structure information by synergetically complementing local representation from non-local features. Furthermore, a cross-layer fusion (CLF) module is specially designed to replace the traditional skip connection during the feature decoding stage so as to reinforce the attention to the spatial regions and feature channels with more serious attenuation. The results on the SateHaze1k, RS-Haze, and RSID datasets demonstrated that the proposed SCSNet can achieve effective dehazing and outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

Comprehensive Facies Analysis and Depositional Environments of the Kikim Formation, Garba Mountain, South Palembang Subbasin, Indonesia

This study provides an exhaustive facies analysis of the Kikim Formation within the Garba Mountain area of the South Palembang Subbasin, emphasizing the stratigraphic significance and depositional environments during the Paleogene period. Utilizing field data collected from the Bumi Agung and Batu Belang measurement lines, this research categorizes various lithofacies using Miall’s (1978) classification scheme, identifying eight distinct lithofacies and four facies associations indicative of a predominantly fluvial depositional setting. The results depict a detailed sedimentological framework, showing that the Kikim Formation was characterized by a braided river system with significant gravel and sandstone deposits. This analysis not only sheds light on the geological history and processes shaping the South Sumatra Basin but also enhances the understanding of its potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. By detailing the lithological diversity and facies distribution, this paper contributes to the broader geological knowledge required for effective exploration and management of the region's natural resources.

Analysis and Multi-Objective Optimization of the Rate of Penetration and Mechanical Specific Energy: A Case Study Applied to a Carbonate Hard Rock Reservoir Based on a Drill Rate Test Using Play-Back Methodology

Until early 2006, in Brazil, the focus used to be on oil and gas exploration/exploitation of post-salt carbonates. This changed when the industry announced the existence of large fields in pre-salt layers across the South Atlantic Ocean from nearshore zones up to almost 350 [km] from the shore. With the discovery of pre-salt hydrocarbons reservoirs, new challenges appeared. One of the main challenges is the necessity to optimize the drilling processes due to their high operational costs. Drilling costs are considerably high, which leads the oil and gas industry to search for innovative and entrepreneurial methods. The coupling of the mechanical specific energy (MSE) and the rate of penetration (ROP) is a method that allows for the identification of ideal conditions to efficiently enhance the drilling process. In addition, the performance of the drilling process can be estimated through pre-operational tests, which consist in continuously testing the applied drilling mechanic parameters, such as the weight-on-bit (WOB) and drill string rotary speed (RPM), looking for optimum sets that would ultimately provide the most desirable ROP. Thus, the goal of this research was to analyze field data from pre-salt layer operations, using a multi-objective optimization based on the play-back methodology for pre-operational drilling tests, through the ideal combination of the highest ROP and the lowest MSE. The results showed that the new concept of pre-operational tests based on the MSE proved to be effective in the drilling process optimization. The combination of the highest ROP and the lowest MSE allows for a high-performance drilling process. For WOB intervals of 5 and 7 [klb], a good fit of the parameters was obtained. Through the parameters obtained from pre-operational tests, the eventual cost-saving and time-saving values could be estimated, respectively, ranging from USD 1,056,180 to 1,151,898 and 19.50 to 21.27 [h], respectively. In addition, the results of this research can be applied to the exploration of other natural resources, such as natural hydrogen and geothermal sources.
