Radiation synthesis of high conductivity hydrogel based on tragacanth gum/poly (ionic liquids) for multimodal sensors and supercapacitor

Natural polymer-based hydrogels have found extensive use in flexible sensing, energy storage, and other fields because of their environmental sustainability and biocompatibility. Nonetheless, numerous challenges persist in the development of hydrogels with outstanding conductivity solely from natural polymers. Herein, we have successfully synthesized hydrogels based on natural polymer (tragacanth gum) and ionic liquids (1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium bromide) using a convenient and efficient one-step ionizing radiation method (TG/PIL hydrogels). The TG/PIL hydrogels exhibit high ionic conductivity (7.1 S m−1 at 25 °C), and can be used for multimodal sensors, including strain and temperature sensors. It has exceptional capabilities in monitoring human motor behavior, capturing subtle facial expressions and pulses beat. TG/PIL hydrogel can also accurately sense changes in the temperature of the external environment, and have significant thermal sensitivity within the range of 40 to 60 °C (−3.22 % /°C). Furthermore, the high conductivity of TG/PIL hydrogels enables them to exhibit outstanding performance in supercapacitor electrolytes, it has good stability in a certain load bearing range, temperature range, folding angle range. This work offers a straightforward technique for creating a multimodal hydrogel sensor, with promising applications in flexible wearable devices, energy storage, and beyond.

Gelatin-Based Polymers Can Be Processed to Highly Resilient Biocompatible Porous Hydrogel Scaffolds for Soft Tissue Regeneration Applications

Tissue regeneration relies on the mechanical properties of the surrounding environment, and it has already been shown that mechanostimulation is highly dependent on the stiffness of the native biological tissue. The main advantage of injectable hydrogels in medical applications is their ability to be delivered through minimally invasive techniques. Natural polymer-based hydrogels have been widely used in biomedical applications, due to their high biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and similarity to soft tissues. However, the crucial combination of low stiffness with high resilience has not been achieved for natural polymers. The current study focuses on the development of novel gelatin-based injectable hydrogels for soft tissue regeneration applications, elucidating the effects of the formulation parameters on the resilience, microstructure, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties. Non-foamed hydrogels demonstrated resilience of at least 95%, while porous hydrogels maintained resilience above 90%, allowing them to withstand mechanical stresses and dynamic conditions within the body. The adjustable modulus of these hydrogels provides the necessary flexibility to mimic the mechanical properties of soft and very soft tissues, without compromising resilience. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) observations of the porous hydrogels indicated round interconnected pore structures, desired for cell migration and nutrient flow. Biocompatibility tests on fibroblasts and pre-adipocytes confirmed high biocompatibility, both directly and indirectly. In summary, structuring these new hydrogels for achieving adjustable stiffness, along with the excellent resilience and biocompatibility, is expected to enable this new technology to fit various soft tissue regeneration applications.

Sodium alginate-g-polyacrylamide hydrogel for water retention and plant growth promotion in water-deficient soils

Natural polymer-based hydrogels are preferred as soil water retention agents due to their inherent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Generally, these natural polymers are chemically modified by graft polymerization of vinyl monomers to improve their water absorption and retention properties. Among the polysaccharides used to prepare natural hydrogels, those based on sodium alginate (Alg) stand out for their high-water absorption and retention capacity, as well as for their ability to promote plant growth. The main objective of this study was to develop a biodegradable alginate-based hydrogel as a water retainer to promote plant growth under water deficit conditions. The synthesis was achieved by grafting poly(acrylamide) (PAM) onto Alg backbone, using bisacrylamide as chemical crosslinker and different ratios of alginate:acrylamide (Ac). In addition, Eucalyptus nitens seedlings were used as a model plant to evaluate the effect of alginate-g-polyacrylamide (Alg:PAM) hydrogel application to the growing medium on plant survival, growth, and physiological responses under both well-watered and water-deficient soil conditions. The maximum degree of swelling (65 g/g) was obtained for the hydrogel prepared. The pseudo-second order model described the water uptake kinetics of the hydrogel. The degradability of Alg:PAM hydrogel reached up to 85 % in 5 weeks in soil and occurs by breaking the glycosidic bonds of the alginate. The E. nitens seedlings cultivated with different doses of Alg:PAM hydrogel (4:1 Alg:Ac) showed higher values of height and root diameter relative growth, survival and photosynthetic responses in comparison to non-treated plants. The results indicate that Alg:PAM hydrogel (4:1 Alg:Ac) has promising applications in forestry as a water retention and seedling growth promoter under water deficient conditions.

Recent Advances in Natural-Polymer-Based Hydrogels for Body Movement and Biomedical Monitoring.

In recent years, the interest in medical monitoring for human health has been rapidly increasing due to widespread concern. Hydrogels are widely used in medical monitoring and other fields due to their excellent mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and adhesion. However, some of the non-degradable materials in hydrogels may cause some environmental damage and resource waste. Therefore, organic renewable natural polymers with excellent properties of biocompatibility, biodegradability, low cost and non-toxicity are expected to serve as an alternative to those non-degradable materials, and also provide a broad application prospect for the development of natural-polymer-based hydrogels as flexible electronic devices. This paper reviews the progress of research on many different types of natural-polymer-based hydrogels such as proteins and polysaccharides. The applications of natural-polymer-based hydrogels in body movement detection and biomedical monitoring are then discussed. Finally, the present challenges and future prospects of natural polymer-based hydrogels are summarized.

Remendable Cross-Linked Alginate/Gelatin Hydrogels Incorporating Nanofibers for Wound Repair and Regeneration.

Wound dressings made from natural-derived polymers are highly valued for their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and biofunctionality. However, natural polymer-based hydrogels can come with their own set of limitations, such as low mechanical strength, limited cell affinity, and the potential cytotoxicity of cross-linkers, which delineate the boundaries of their usage and hamper their practical application. To overcome the limitation of natural-derived polymers, this study utilized a mixture of oxidized alginate and gelatin with 5 mg/mL polycaprolactone (PCL):gelatin nanofiber fragments at a ratio of 7:3 (OGN-7) to develop a hydrogel composite wound dressing that can be injected and has the ability to be remended. The in situ formation of the remendable hydrogel is facilitated by dual cross-linking of oxidized alginate chains with gelatin and PCL/gelatin nanofibers through Schiff-base mechanisms, supported by the physical integration of nanofibers, thereby obviating the need for additional cross-linking agents. Furthermore, OGN-7 exhibits increased stiffness (γ = 79.4-316.3%), reduced gelation time (543 ± 5 to 475 ± 5 s), improved remendability of the hydrogel, and excellent biocompatibility. Notably, OGN-7 achieves full fusion within 1 h of incubation and maintains structural integrity under external stress, effectively overcoming the inherent mechanical weaknesses of natural polymer-based dressings and enhancing biofunctionality. The therapeutic efficacy of OGN-7 was validated through a full-thickness in vivo wound healing analysis, which demonstrated that OGN-7 significantly accelerates wound closure compared to alginate-based dressings and control groups. Histological analysis further revealed that re-epithelialization and collagen deposition were markedly enhanced in the regenerating skin of the OGN-7 group, confirming the superior therapeutic performance of OGN-7. In summary, OGN-7 optimized the synergistic effects of natural polymers, which enhances their collective functionality as a wound dressing and expands their utility across diverse biomedical applications.

Tannic acid modified keratin/sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan biocomposite hydrogels with good mechanical properties and swelling behavior

Natural polymer-based hydrogels have demonstrated great potential as wound-healing dressings. They help to maintain a moist wound environment as well as promote faster healing. In this work, a multifunctional hydrogel was prepared using keratin, sodium alginate, and carboxymethyl chitosan with tannic acid modification. Micro-morphology of hydrogels has been performed by scanning electron microscopy. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy reveals the presence of hydrogen bonding. The mechanical properties of the hydrogels were examined using a universal testing machine. Furthermore, we investigated several properties of the modified hydrogel. These properties include swelling rate, water retention, anti-freezing properties, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, hemocompatibility evaluation and cell viability test in vitro. The modified hydrogel has a three-dimensional microporous structure, the swelling rate was 1541.7%, the elastic modulus was 589.74 kPa, the toughness was 211.74 kJ/m3, and the elongation at break was 75.39%, which was similar to the human skin modulus. The modified hydrogel also showed inhibition of S. aureus and E. coli, as well as a DPPH scavenging rate of 95%. In addition, the modified hydrogels have good biological characteristics. Based on these findings, the K/SA/CCS hydrogel holds promise for applications in biomedical engineering.

Biological investigation of a novel nanocomposite based on xanthan gum-alginate hydrogel/PVA, incorporated with ZnMnFe2O4 nanoparticles

In light of the need to create new materials that are safe for use in biomedical applications like wound healing and tissue engineering, a unique nanocomposite was formulated and produced in the current investigation. A biocompatible hydrogel was created using natural polymers xanthan gum (XG) and alginate (Alg). In order to enhance the mechanical characteristics of the natural polymer-based hydrogels, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was added to the hydrogel matrix. Subsequently, the XG-Alg hydrogel/PVA structure was combined with ZnMnFe2O4 nanoparticles in order to augment the antibacterial efficacy of the biomaterial. The XG-Alg hydrogel/PVA/ZnMnFe2O4 nanocomposite was analyzed using XRD, EDX, FT-IR, TGA, and FE-SEM techniques to determine its properties. In addition, the mechanical properties of the pure hydrogel were compared to those of the XG-Alg hydrogel/PVA/ZnMnFe2O4 nanocomposite. The nanocomposite exhibited a biocompatibility of 96.45 % and 94.32 % with HEK293T cell lines after 24 h and 48 h of incubation, respectively, in biological evaluations. Furthermore, a significant antibacterial efficacy was demonstrated against both gram-positive S. aureus and gram-negative E. coli bacteria. The findings suggest that the developed XG-Alg hydrogel/PVA/ZnMnFe2O4 nanocomposite has promising qualities for use in biomedical fields, such as tissue engineering.

Ultra-strong and tough cellulose-based conductive hydrogels via orientation inspired by noodles pre-stretching

Due to the unsatisfactory mechanical properties of natural polymer-based conductive hydrogels, their applications are limited. Shaanxi Biangbiang noodles can be toughened by applying external mechanical forces through stretching and beating movements; this process provides inspiration for the preparation of high-strength hydrogels. In this paper, we propose a strategy for the preparation of ultrastrong and ultratough conductive hydrogels by directional prestretching and solvent exchange. Neatly arranged fiber bundles containing many intermolecular hydrogen bonds and metal ion coordination bonds are successfully constructed inside the prepared hydrogels. The hydrogel has exceptional mechanical properties, with a fracture stress exceeding 50 MPa, fracture strain approaching 105 %, fracture toughness exceeding 30 MJ m−3, and high conductivity reaching 11.738 ± 0.06 mS m−1. Impressively, the hydrogel can maintain its high mechanical properties after being frozen at an ultralow temperature of −80 °C for 7 days. Compared with other tough hydrogels, natural tendons and synthetic rubbers, the hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties. The cellulose-based conductive hydrogel prepared in this study can be applied to robotic soft tissues (such as the Achilles tendon) that require high strength and are operated in extreme environments.

A Novel Nanofiber Hydrogel Adhesive Based on Carboxymethyl Cellulose Modified by Adenine and Thymine.

Natural polymer-based adhesive hydrogels have garnered significant interest for their outstanding strength and versatile applications, in addition to being eco-friendly. However, the adhesive capabilities of purely natural products are suboptimal, which hampers their practical use. To address this, we engineered carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) surfaces with complementary bases, adenine (A) and thymine (T), to facilitate the self-assembly of adhesive hydrogels (CMC-AT) with a nanofiber configuration. Impressively, the shear adhesive strength reached up to 6.49 MPa with a mere 2% adhesive concentration. Building upon this innovation, we conducted a comparative analysis of the shear adhesion properties between CMC and CMC-AT hydrogel adhesives when applied to delignified and non-delignified wood chips. We examined the interplay between the adhesives and the substrate, as well as the role of mechanical interlocking in overall adhesion performance. Our findings offer a fresh perspective on the development of new biodegradable polymer hydrogel adhesives.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogel based on natural polymers for breast cancer.

Aims: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in both high- and low-resource settings. Conventional breast cancer therapies were inefficient and had low patient compliance. Stimuli-responsive hydrogels possessing similar physicochemical features as soft tissue facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for breast cancer subtypes. Scope: Polysaccharides and polypeptides are major natural polymers with unique biocompatibility, biodegradability, and feasible modification approaches utilized frequently for hydrogel fabrication. Alternating the natural polymer-based hydrogel properties in response to external stimuli such as pH, temperature, light, ultrasonic, enzyme, glucose, magnetic, redox, and electric have provided great potential for the evolution of novel drug delivery systems (DDSs) and various advanced technologies in medical applications. Stimuli-responsive hydrogels are triggered by specific cancer tissue features, promote target delivery techniques, and modify release therapeutic agents at localized sites. This narrative review presented innovation in preparing and characterizing the most common stimuli-responsive natural polymer-based hydrogels for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the breast cancer area. Conclusion: Stimuli-responsive hydrogels display bioinspiration products as DDSs for breast cancer subtypes, protect the shape of breast tissue, provide modified drug release, enhance therapeutic efficacy, and minimize chemotherapy agents' side effects. The potential benefits of smart natural polymer-based hydrogels make them an exciting area of practice for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Smart/stimuli-responsive chitosan/gelatin and other polymeric macromolecules natural hydrogels vs. synthetic hydrogels systems for brain tissue engineering: A state-of-the-art review

Currently, there are no viable curative treatments that can enhance the central nervous system's (CNS) recovery from trauma or illness. Bioengineered injectable smart/stimuli-responsive hydrogels (SSRHs) that mirror the intricacy of the CNS milieu and architecture have been suggested as a way to get around these restrictions in combination with medication and cell therapy. Additionally, the right biophysical and pharmacological stimuli are required to boost meaningful CNS regeneration. Recent research has focused heavily on developing SSRHs as cutting-edge delivery systems that can direct the regeneration of brain tissue. In the present article, we have discussed the pathology of brain injuries, and the applicable strategies employed to regenerate the brain tissues. Moreover, the most promising SSRHs for neural tissue engineering (TE) including alginate (Alg.), hyaluronic acid (HA), chitosan (CH), gelatin, and collagen are used in natural polymer-based hydrogels and thoroughly discussed in this review. The ability of these hydrogels to distribute bioactive substances or cells in response to internal and external stimuli is highlighted with particular attention. In addition, this article provides a summary of the most cutting-edge techniques for CNS recovery employing SSRHs for several neurodegenerative diseases.

A nanoparticle reinforced microporous methacrylated silk fibroin hydrogel to promote bone regeneration.

Natural polymer-based hydrogels have been widely applied in bone tissue engineering due to their excellent biocompatibility and outstanding ability of drug encapsulation. However, they have relatively weak mechanical properties and lack bioactivity. Hence, we developed a bioactive nanoparticle composite hydrogel by incorporating LAPONITE®, which is an osteo-inductive inorganic nanoparticle. The incorporation of the nanoparticle significantly enhanced its mechanical properties. In vitro evaluation indicated that the nanocomposite hydrogel could exhibit good biocompatibility. Besides, the nanocomposite hydrogel was proved to have excellent osteogenic ability with up-regulated expression of osteogenic markers such as type I collagen (COL-I), runt-related transcription factor-2 (Runx-2) and osteocalcin (OCN). Furthermore, the in vivo study confirmed that the composite nanocomposite hydrogel could significantly promote new bone formation, providing a prospective strategy for bone tissue regeneration.

Hydrogels Based on Natural Polymers Loaded with Bentonite and/or Halloysite: Composition Impact on Spectroscopic, Thermal, and Swelling Properties.

Hydrogels are characterized by their property of absorbing and releasing a high content of water and water-based liquids; thus, they can be applied in agriculture as controlled-release water and fertilizer products. The focus of this research was efficient and low-cost natural polymer-based hydrogels obtained by crosslinking gellan gum (GGLA) and starch (ST) with acetic acid (CA) and loading them with either bentonite (BET) and/or halloysite (HAL). The hydrogels were obtained by mixing 100, 75, 50, 25, and 0 wt.% of GGLA with 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 wt.% ST water solutions. To obtain the networks, they were crosslinked with 10, 5, and 2 wt.% of CA and loaded with 2, 5, and 10 wt.% of BET and/or HAL. The samples were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), their swelling in water, and the state of bound water properties. The results of these analyses point to the formation of a polymeric network with a decomposition temperature of >250 °C, and tailorable swelling properties that vary between 3 and 77, depending on the hydrogel composition. In summary, GGLA-ST-BET/HAL hydrogels are a good option for eco-friendly agriculture materials.

Natural Polymer-Based Hydrogels: From Polymer to Biomedical Applications.

Hydrogels prepared from natural polymer have attracted extensive attention in biomedical fields such as drug delivery, wound healing, and regenerative medicine due to their good biocompatibility, degradability, and flexibility. This review outlines the commonly used natural polymer in hydrogel preparation, including cellulose, chitosan, collagen/gelatin, alginate, hyaluronic acid, starch, guar gum, agarose, and dextran. The polymeric structure and process/synthesis of natural polymers are illustrated, and natural polymer-based hydrogels including the hydrogel formation and properties are elaborated. Subsequently, the biomedical applications of hydrogels based on natural polymer in drug delivery, tissue regeneration, wound healing, and other biomedical fields are summarized. Finally, the future perspectives of natural polymers and hydrogels based on them are discussed. For natural polymers, novel technologies such as enzymatic and biological methods have been developed to improve their structural properties, and the development of new natural-based polymers or natural polymer derivatives with high performance is still very important and challenging. For natural polymer-based hydrogels, novel hydrogel materials, like double-network hydrogel, multifunctional composite hydrogels, and hydrogel microrobots have been designed to meet the advanced requirements in biomedical applications, and new strategies such as dual-cross-linking, microfluidic chip, micropatterning, and 3D/4D bioprinting have been explored to fabricate advanced hydrogel materials with designed properties for biomedical applications. Overall, natural polymeric hydrogels have attracted increasing interest in biomedical applications, and the development of novel natural polymer-based materials and new strategies/methods for hydrogel fabrication are highly desirable and still challenging.

Guanosine-driven hyaluronic acid-based supramolecular hydrogels with peroxidase-like activity for chronic diabetic wound treatment

Guanosine is often used to construct supramolecular hydrogels due to its self-assembly properties, however, the high temperature and strong alkaline construction methods greatly limit its application in biomedical fields. In this work, a guanosine-driven hyaluronic acid-based supramolecular hydrogel was developed under mild condition by employing phenylboronic acid-functionalized hyaluronic acid (HA-PBA) backbone and guanosine molecules. Guanosines self-assembled into G-quartet planes under potassium ion conditions, and formed boronic ester bonds with HA-PBA, which induced rapid formation of dynamically cross-linked hydrogels. Hemin was then binding to the G-quartet plane via π-π interactions in the hydrogels, which exhibited peroxidase activity and were highly effective in killing bacteria by generating hydroxyl radicals in the presence of H2O2. Furthermore, glucose oxidase (GOx) was incorporated into the hydrogels and the HP/G@hemin@GOx hydrogels showed good antibacterial properties, modulation of wound glucose and ROS level, and good therapeutic efficacy for diabetic chronic wounds. Overall, the self-assembly of guanosine has been shown for the first time to be a feasible method for constructing natural polymer-based supramolecular hydrogels. This guanosine-driven HA-based supramolecular hydrogel can act as a potential wound dressing for chronic diabetic wound treatment. Statement of significanceChronic wound repair remains an unsolved clinical challenge. Herein, we propose to utilize phenylboronic acid-modified hyaluronic acid and guanosine to construct supramolecular gels with peroxidase activity for chronic wound treatment. The self-assembly behavior of guanosine drives the natural macromolecular backbone to form the hydrogel, and the proposed method simplifies the gelation conditions and improves its biosafety. The G-quartets formed by the self-assembly of guanosine can act as the loading site for hemin. G-quartet/hemin complex imported peroxidase activity to the hydrogels, endowing them with the ability to kill bacteria and regulate ROS levels of cells in the wound site. This guanosine-driven supramolecular hydrogel significantly increased the rate of wound healing in diabetic mice, promising a new strategy for chronic wound treatment.

Synthesis of novel antibacterial and biocompatible polymer nanocomposite based on polysaccharide gum hydrogels

According to recent studies on the benefits of natural polymer-based hydrogels in biomedical applications, gellan gum (GG)/acacia gum (AG) hydrogel was prepared in this study. In order to regulate the mechanical behavior of the hydrogel, graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was included in the hydrogel matrix. In addition, metal oxide nanoparticles ZnCuFe2O4 were added to the composite for antibacterial activity. The prepared GG–AG hydrogel/g-C3N4/ZnCuFe2O4 nanobiocomposite was characterized by using FE-SEM, FTIR, EDX, XRD and TGA. The nanobiocomposite exhibited spherical morphology, which was related to the incorporation of the metal oxide nanoparticles. GG–AG hydrogel/g-C3N4/ZnCuFe2O4 nanobiocomposite showed 95.11%, 92.73% and 88.97% biocompatibility toward HEK293T cell lines within 24 h, 48 h and 72 h incubation, respectively, which indicates that this nanobiocomposite is completely biocompatible with healthy cells. Also, the nanobiocomposite was able to inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm growth on its surface up to 87%. Rheological studies showed that the nanobiocomposite has a viscoelastic structure and has a water uptake ratio of 93.2%. In comparison with other similar studies, this nanobiocomposite has exhibited superior antibacterial activity complete biocompatibility and proper mechanical properties, high swelling and water absorption capability. These results indicate that GG–AG hydrogel/g-C3N4/ZnCuFe2O4 nanocomposite can be considered as a potential candidate for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and wound healing.

Chitosan-based double network hydrogel loading herbal small molecule for accelerating wound healing

Skin injuries are one of the most common clinical traumas worldwide, and wound dressings are considered to be one of key factors in wound healing. Natural polymer-based hydrogels have been developed as ideal materials for a new generation of dressings due to their excellent biocompatibility and wetting ability. However, the inadequate mechanical performances and lack of efficacy in promoting wound healing have limited the application of natural polymer-based hydrogels as wound dressings. In this work, a double network hydrogel based on natural chitosan molecules was constructed to enhance the mechanical properties, and emodin, a herbal natural product, was loaded into the hydrogel to improve the healing effect of the dressing. The structure of the chitosan–emodin network formed by Schiff base reaction and microcrystalline network of biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol endowed hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and ensured its integrity as wound dressings. Moreover, the hydrogel showed excellent wound healing properties due to the loading of emodin. The hydrogel dressing could promote cell proliferation, cell migration, and secretion of growth factors. The animal experimental results also demonstrated that the hydrogel dressing facilitated the regeneration of blood vessels and collagen and accelerated wound healing.

Wearable Pressure Sensor Using Porous Natural Polymer Hydrogel Elastomers with High Sensitivity over a Wide Sensing Range.

Wearable pressure sensors capable of quantifying full-range human dynamic motionare are pivotal in wearable electronics and human activity monitoring. Since wearable pressure sensors directly or indirectly contact skin, selecting flexible soft and skin-friendly materials is important. Wearable pressure sensors with natural polymer-based hydrogels are extensively explored to enable safe contact with skin. Despite recent advances, most natural polymer-based hydrogel sensors suffer from low sensitivity at high-pressure ranges. Here, by using commercially available rosin particles as sacrificial templates, a cost-effective wide-range porous locust bean gum-based hydrogel pressure sensor is constructed. Due to the three-dimensional macroporous structure of the hydrogel, the constructed sensor exhibits high sensitivities (12.7, 5.0, and 3.2 kPa-1 under 0.1-20, 20-50, and 50-100 kPa) under a wide range of pressure. The sensor also offers a fast response time (263 ms) and good durability over 500 loading/unloading cycles. In addition, the sensor is successfully applied for monitoring human dynamic motion. Engineering functional natural polymer-based nanocomposite hydrogels for wound healing.

Skin injury occurs due to acute trauma, chronic trauma, infection, and surgical intervention, which can result in severe dysfunction and even death in humans. Therefore, clinical intervention is critical for the treatment of skin wounds. One idealized method is to use wound dressings to protect skin wounds and promote wound healing. Among these wound dressings, nanocomposite natural polymer hydrogels (NNPHs) are multifunctional wound dressings for wound healing. The combination of nanomaterials and natural polymer hydrogels avoids the shortcomings of a single component. Moreover, nanomaterials could provide improved antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, stimuli-responsive, electrically conductive and mechanical properties of hydrogels to accelerate wound healing. This review focuses on recent advancements in NNPHs for skin wound healing and repair. Initially, the functions and requirements of NNPHs as wound dressings were introduced. Second, the design, preparation and capacities of representative NNPHs are classified based on their nanomaterial. Third, skin wound repair applications of NNPHs have been summarized based on the types of wounds. Finally, the potential issues of NNPHs are discussed, and future research is proposed to prepare idealized multifunctional NNPHs for skin tissue regeneration.
