Polycyclic musk compounds are commonly used in personal care products to replace expensive natural fragrances. Due to their huge consumption, they have become a part of the aquatic environment. Inthe present study, atwo-month exposure effect oftonalide onjuvenile zebrafish (Danio rerio) was investigated. Wedetermined thevitellogenin concentration todefine the potential endocrine-disrupting effect oftonalide and also analysedselected indices toevaluate the induction ofoxidative stress. The environmentally relevant concentration oftonalide (i.e., 500ng/l) caused asignificant decrease inthe catalase activity (P<0.05) and asignificant increase (P<0.05) inthe lipid peroxidation. Anincreasing lipid peroxidation was also recorded for the highest concentration group tested (i.e., 50000ng/l). Onthe other hand, nosignificant changes were recorded invitellogenin inall theexposed groups. Thus, based onthese results, wehave not demonstrated the endocrine-disrupting activity oftonalide inzebrafish. The results ofthe oxidative stress indices showed asignificant impairment oftheantioxidant defence after the two-month tonalide exposure, which could indicate part ofthe adaptive response tothetonalide toxicity.
