Skidder Tire Size vs. Soil Compaction in Soil Bins

ABSTRACT THE effects of tire size, inflation pressure, and percent travel reduction on bulk density were determined on ourdoor bins filled with soil from the lower Ap horizon of the Cecil, Hiwassee, and Lakeland soil series. The single-wheel tire tester of the National Tillage Machinery Laboratory at Auburn, Alabama, were used in the tests. The three skidder tires used in the study were a 10 ply 18.4-34, a 12 ply 24.5-32, and a 12 ply 30.5L-32. Travel reduction (percent slip) had a greater influence on soil compaction than tire size or inflation pressure. The higher travel reduction level (30%) was associated with a decrease in soil compaction. Dynamic loads beyond about 20 kN did not cause additional increases in soil compaction.

Influence of interrow traffic spacing on under-the-row subsoiled cotton

This study assesses the effects of the distance between a planted row and the edge of a tire during post-subsoiling traffic. It was conducted in a large soil bin at the National Tillage Machinery Laboratory, Auburn, AL, utilizing special equipment to eliminate all but test-related traffic, thus assuring the necessary control of all depth and spacing operations. Growth, yield, and root characteristics of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) and the strength and bulk density of soil created by seven traffic treatments was measured. Tractor wheel traffic was made directly over the subsoiled channel (treatment T-1), and at 10 (T-2), 20 (T-3), 30 (T-4), 40 (T-5) and 50 (T-6) cm to each side of the subsoiled channel. Traffic treatment T-7 was not subsoiled and the wheel edge was more than 50 cm from the planted row. The study indicated that the edge of the tire must be more than 30 cm from the channel to prevent recompaction that adversely affects growth and yield.

Computer automation of soil dynamics research

The rapid development of computer technology in the past few years, combined with the accompanying reduction of costs, has resulted in the availability of a very powerful tool to researchers. A real-time multiprogramming digital computer system has been in use at the National Tillage Machinery Laboratory for 8 years. This system supports about 90% of the Laboratory's data acquisition, analysis, storage, and display requirements. The computer has had considerable impact on the productivity of the research program at the National Tillage Machinery Laboratory.

A Machine for Testing Tractor Tires in Soil Bins

ABSTRACT THE National Tillage Machinery Laboratory (NTML) single-wheel tester has been redesigned to increase the tire-size capability and to provide electro-hydraulic servo control of the forward and angular velocities of the test wheel and the vertical load on the test wheel. This paper describes the operation and capabilities of the redesigned tire tester.

Extended Uses of the Split Wheel for Measurement of Tangential Stress

ABSTRACT MEASUREMENT of the tangential stress distribution at the soil-wheel interface is necessary for study of the factors influencing the tractive effort developed by a wheel. The split wheel technique for measurement of tangential stress at the interface of a rigid, smooth wheel in soil was re-ported by Burt and Schafer (1972). Since that report the split wheel technique has been used successfully at the National Tillage Machinery Laboratory (NTML) in several studies (Burt and Bailey, 1974; Bailey, Burt and Taylor 1975) and a study not yet published. This paper reports the concepts that were developed for ex-tension of the split wheel technique for lugged wheels and for comparison of wheel surfaces. Since 1972 the analog data process-ing described by Burt and Schafer (1972) has been eliminated and the data are now analyzed with an on-line digital computer system. The use of the digital system facilitates data manipulation, and the information gained from the digital analysis is much improved. Details of the digital analysis can be requested from the NTML.

The national tillage machinery laboratory

The development of any science is the accumulation and systematic arrangements of facts about a subject. The facts may come from deductive reasoning or experimentation bu in the final analysis the general laws developed must be tested and accepted. At the National Tillage Machinery Laboratory, a research facility of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, the staff is engaged in determining and studying the laws which govern the reaction of soil to forces. The primary aim is to learn about factors which can be applied to the design and use of tillage implements and tractive devices, such as wheel and crawler tracks. Many of the studies are cooperative with industry and state and federal research groups.
