Every year estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. Most people affected are over 65, but it can happen to anyone including children and babies. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK and is the single most common cause of severe disability. More than 250,000 people live with disabilities caused by stroke. The Stroke Association estimates that stroke costs the economy £7billion a year in health and social care costs, so the recent consultation document on a national stroke strategy is to be welcomed. The RCN is pleased that, at last, stroke is beginning to get the attention it deserves.
