An assessment of the public health surveillance strategy based on molecular testing during three major pandemic waves of COVID-19 in Brazil.

A national laboratory-based surveillance system was adapted to monitor the situation of SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil. The objective of the study was to compare the challenges in implementing COVID-19 surveillance strategies based on the Ministry of Health's (MoH) distribution of RT-PCR tests to different types of laboratories. This retrospective study analyzed the MoH's testing policies and distribution of RT-PCR tests to laboratories during the first, second, and third waves. Recipient laboratories were divided into groups: public health laboratories that belonged to the national network of public health laboratories (Group 1); public laboratories granted authorization during the pandemic (Group 2); and High-Capacity Testing Centers (Group 3). We analyzed the timing and duration of COVID-19 testing policies and the allocation of tests to laboratories by group and wave. Using t-tests, we analyzed the difference in the weekly average of tests distributed to labs by group and using Pearson's correlation coefficient, analyzed the test distribution according to infection and death rates. Between epiweek 9, 2020, and epiweek 22, 2022, the MoH distributed an average of 263,004 RT-PCR tests per week. The weekly average of tests distributed was highest in the second wave (310,327 tests), followed by the first (218,005 tests) and third waves (201,226 tests). There was a significant increase in the mean weekly tests distributed in the second wave compared to the first and third waves (p = 0.047; IC 8.29-1110.71). We found a significant difference between the weekly average of tests distributed in the first and second wave (p < 0.001; IC -209.83-76.20) to Group 2. Group 3 received the second-highest number of tests from the MoH overall, with a reduction during the third wave to first-wave levels. The distribution of RT-PCR tests was not correlated with the case and death incidence.

One year of laboratory-based COVID-19 surveillance system in Belgium: main indicators and performance of the laboratories (March 2020\u201321)

BackgroundWith the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an existing national laboratory-based surveillance system was adapted to daily monitor the epidemiological situation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the Belgium by following the number of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections, the number of performed tests and the positivity ratio. We present these main indicators of the surveillance over a one-year period as well as the impact of the performance of the laboratories, regarding speed of processing the samples and reporting results, for surveillance.MethodsWe describe the evolution of test capacity, testing strategy and the data collection methods during the first year of the epidemic in Belgium.ResultsBetween the 1st of March 2020 and the 28th of February 2021, 9,487,470 tests and 773,078 COVID-19 laboratory confirmed cases were reported. Two epidemic waves occurred, with a peak in April and October 2020. The capacity and performance of the laboratories improved continuously during 2020 resulting in a high level performance. Since the end of November 2020 90 to 95% of the test results are reported at the latest the day after sampling was performed.ConclusionsThanks to the effort of all laboratories a performant exhaustive national laboratory-based surveillance system to monitor the epidemiological situation of SARS-CoV-2 was set up in Belgium in 2020. On top of expanding the number of laboratories performing diagnostics and significantly increasing the test capacity in Belgium, turnaround times between sampling and testing as well as reporting were optimized over the first year of this pandemic.

Contribution of Enteroviruses to Acute Central Nervous System or Systemic Infections in Northern Italy (2015-2017): Is It Time to Establish a National Laboratory-Based Surveillance System?

Background Enteroviruses (EVs) can cause infections and outbreaks of mild to severe diseases, such as central nervous system (CNS) and systemic infections. The contribution of EVs to acute CNS/systemic infections requiring hospitalization was assessed by analysing data extracted from virology laboratory database. Methods Real-life data obtained from two molecular virology laboratories located in Northern Italy were retrieved from databases and analysed retrospectively. The queries used to extract the data were (i) requests for EV-RNA detection in clear cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens collected from hospitalized patients with suspected acute CNS (including aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, and acute flaccid myelitis/paralysis) or systemic infections (sepsis-like illness or fever (≥ 38°C) of unknown origin), (ii) CSF samples collected from January 1st, 2015, to December 31st, 2017. Results 582 requests of EV-RNA detection in CSF samples collected from as many patients of any age were recorded. EV-RNA was detected in 4.5% of the CSF samples; 92.3% of EV-positive cases were patients < 15 years, 58.3% of whom were < 3 months. EVs circulated all-year-round, and the highest EV-positive rates were observed from May to August. The risk of EV infection and the relative illness ratio value among children < 1 − year − old were significantly higher than those observed for older patients. Conclusions EV surveillance should be carried out for all pediatric patients < 15 years and especially children less than 1 year of age with clinically suspected CNS infection/systemic infections. The implementation of a laboratory-based surveillance established for analysing the virological data provided by laboratories that routinely perform EV molecular testing may enable us to determine the impact of EVs that can cause infections requiring hospitalization.

PulseNet: Entering the Age of Next-Generation Sequencing.

Since 1996, PulseNet has served as the national laboratory-based surveillance system for the rapid detection of outbreaks caused by foodborne bacterial pathogens in the United States. For the past two decades, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was the gold standard subtyping method for the pathogens tracked by PulseNet. A new gold standard is now being implemented with the introduction of cost-effective whole genome sequencing (WGS) for analysis of all the organisms tracked by PulseNet. This transformation is a major undertaking that touches every functional aspect of PulseNet, including laboratory workflows, data storage, analysis management and data interpretation, and language used to communicate information (sequence profile nomenclature system). The benefits of implementing WGS go beyond improved discrimination and precision of the data; it provides an opportunity to determine strain characteristics typically obtained through resource-intensive traditional methodologies, for example, species identification, serotyping, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance profiling, all of which can be consolidated into a single WGS workflow. Such a strategy represents a major shift in the workflows currently practiced in most public health laboratories, but one that brings opportunities for streamlining surveillance activities for the network as a whole. In this study, we provide a brief summary of PulseNet's evolution the past decade along with a general description of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Pregnancy-associated listeriosis- 30 years of experience in Argentina

Background: Invasive listeriosis is a rare but life-threatening infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes (Lm). Human invasive listeriosis is considered a foodborne disease and generally affects immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women and newborns. Listeriosis may cause fetal loss, preterm delivery and neonatal sepsis. In Argentina, listeriosis is included as a reportable disease in the National Laboratory-based Surveillance System. This report is voluntary, so underreporting might exist. Objective: To report cases of pregnancy-associated listeriosis (PRL) occurring in Argentina from 1986 to 2016 to determine the burden and trend of this disease in our setting. Methods & Materials: Identification of Lm isolates from PRL referred to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) during the period 1986-2016, was confirmed using conventional biochemical tests and serotyped by the slide agglutination method until 2004 and by multiplex PCR since 2005. From 2005, ongoing subtyping was conducted by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with ApaI and AscI, according to standard protocols. Results: From 325 isolates from human listeriosis referred to NRL during the last 30 years, 34% (n = 111) corresponded to cases PRL. They were classified as: maternal infection with ongoing pregnancy (12%); fetal loss (7%) and live-born neonatal listeriosis (81%). Serotype 4b was prevalent (71%), followed by serotype 1/2b (28%) and only one isolate (1%) belonging to serotype 1/2a. From 2005, 24 isolates from PRL were analyzed by PFGE. Three clusters were detected. Each cluster included 2 isolates with indistinguible pulsovar with both enzymes. Epidemiological data suggested that two clusters corresponded to a probable nosocomial transmission and the third cluster corresponded to a newborn and a post delivery control of the mother. Conclusion: A decrease in the number of cases of PRL was observed during the last decade. This might be related to the improvement in control measures implemented at the food production level. Effective surveillance of listeriosis requires information about types of food consumed by the patients in order to assess risk and improve the awareness of dietary recommendations in susceptible population. The inclusion of listeriosis in the National Mandatory Notification System from 2018 will improve the analyses of the distribution of this infection and the promotion of effective prevention and control.

Evaluation of the national laboratory-based surveillance system for respiratory syncytial virus in Sweden, 2015–2016

BackgroundMost laboratories use RSV PCR but near-patient tests (NPT) performed at paediatric clinics are believed to be increasingly used. Anonymised data on RSV infections has been collected since 1990 in Sweden. No evaluation of Swedish RSV surveillance or use of laboratory testing had previously been performed. ObjectivesSwedish RSV data and methods used for RSV laboratory testing and reporting were evaluated in order to improve RSV surveillance in a forthcoming vaccine era. Study designRSV data obtained in Sweden 2015–2016 were reviewed. Data on methods used for the RSV laboratory detection and reporting were collected via on-line questionnaires submitted to laboratories (n = 26) and clinics (n = 4) known to perform virological testing. Swedish Quality Control Program reports from 2013 to 2015 on the performance of RSV testing were also evaluated. ResultsOver 60% of RSV infections were diagnosed in children under 5 years (1917/2925), but infections were also common in those 65 years and older (n = 607). Two laboratories limited RSV testing to children only. RSV NPT was utilised in eight clinics; four participated in RSV surveillance. RSV NPTs evaluated could only detect 50% of RSV positive samples. Reporting was complete and timely, but took too much time (18 min/week/laboratory). ConclusionsAlthough most common in children, RSV infections are also common in the elderly, and testing should not be limited to children only. The poor performance of RSV NPT and importance of confirming results should be communicated to all relevant laboratories and clinics. All clinics should be encouraged to participate in surveillance. Automated case-based reporting should be considered.

Distribution of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes before and 5 years after the introduction of 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Brazil

BackgroundIn March 2010, the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) was introduced into the routine immunization program in Brazil. We describe the pneumococcal serotypes that caused invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) before and after the introduction of PCV10 using data from a national laboratory-based surveillance system. MethodWe compared the prevalence of vaccine types (VT) and non-vaccine types (NVT) of Streptococcus pneumoniae in three periods, pre-PCV10 (January/2005-December/2009), early post-PCV10 (January/2010-December/2013), and late post-PCV10 (January/2014-December/2015), by episode in meningitis and non-meningitis cases and by age group. Changes in serotype prevalence in the early and late post-PCV10 periods were determined using pre-PCV10 period as a reference. ResultsA total of 8971 IPD isolates from patients aged 2 months to 99 years were analyzed. In the late post-PCV10 period, the VT-IPD reduction in the 2-month to 4-year age group was 83.4% for meningitis and 87.4% for non-meningitis cases; in the age groups 5–17 years, 18–64 years, and ≥65 years, VT declined by 56.1%, 54.1%, and 47.4%, respectively, in meningitis cases, and by 60.9%, 47.7%, and 53.4%, respectively, in non-meningitis cases. NVT-IPD increased throughout the study period, driven mainly by serotypes 3, 6C, and 19A, which remained the predominant types causing IPD in the late post-PCV10 period. ConclusionWe observed direct and indirect PCV10 protection against IPD caused by VT and a shift in the distribution of serotypes 5 years after the introduction of PCV10. Continued IPD surveillance is needed to evaluate the sustainability of the high prevalence of serotypes 3, 6C, and 19A, which were not included in PCV10.

National laboratory-based surveillance system for antimicrobial resistance: a successful tool to support the control of antimicrobial resistance in the Netherlands.

An important cornerstone in the control of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a well-designed quantitative system for the surveillance of spread and temporal trends in AMR. Since 2008, the Dutch national AMR surveillance system, based on routine data from medical microbiological laboratories (MMLs), has developed into a successful tool to support the control of AMR in the Netherlands. It provides background information for policy making in public health and healthcare services, supports development of empirical antibiotic therapy guidelines and facilitates in-depth research. In addition, participation of the MMLs in the national AMR surveillance network has contributed to sharing of knowledge and quality improvement. A future improvement will be the implementation of a new semantic standard together with standardised data transfer, which will reduce errors in data handling and enable a more real-time surveillance. Furthermore, the scientific impact and the possibility of detecting outbreaks may be amplified by merging the AMR surveillance database with databases from selected pathogen-based surveillance programmes containing patient data and genotypic typing data.

P3.202 Estimation of HIV Incidence in Brazil, 2004–2011

<h3>Background</h3> The HIV incidence is the most valuable indicator of epidemiological surveillance as it establishes the degree to which HIV transmission is occurring and which groups are most at risk for HIV infection. However, the HIV incidence is a difficult indicator to estimate. This paper addresses a method to estimate the HIV incidence in Brazil in recent years. <h3>Methods</h3> The information source is SISCEL, which is the national laboratory-based surveillance system created to monitor CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocytes and HIV viral load. The proposed method is based on the first CD4 count after HIV diagnosis among all treatment-naïve cases registered in SISCEL in the time period 2004–2011. A regression model that relates progress of CD4 to time of seroconversion was used to estimate time of HIV infection at the date of first CD4 count. The analysis was performed by sex and age group. <h3>Results</h3> For all years, the proportion of HIV cases registered in SISCEL in the same year of infection was 31%, and approximately 6% for each year of the 5 subsequent years after infection, so that almost 40% cases are registered in SISCEL only 7 years or more after infection. The HIV incidence was stable in the period 2005–2011. After adjusting for HIV cases tested in private laboratory and undiagnosed cases not registered in SISCEL, the mean estimate was 41600 cases, corresponding to an HIV incidence rate of 0.27 per 1000 population. Analysis by sex and age showed a rising trend among males, particularly for young men, and a decreasing trend among females. <h3>Conclusion</h3> In terms of late HIV diagnosis, the results indicate that coverage of HIV testing in the general population should be largely expanded. As to most at risk populations, the findings suggest that interventions should be focused on young adult men to reverse the increasing trend.

PulseNet China, a model for future laboratory-based bacterial infectious disease surveillance in China

Surveillance is critical for the prevention and control of infectious disease. China's real-time web-based infectious disease reporting system is a distinguished achievement. However, many aspects of the current China Infectious Disease Surveillance System do not yet meet the demand for timely outbreak detection and identification of emerging infectious disease. PulseNet, the national molecular typing network for foodborne disease surveillance was first established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States in 1995 and has proven valuable in the early detection of outbreaks and tracing the pathogen source. Since 2001, the China CDC laboratory for bacterial pathogen analysis has been a member of the PulseNet International family; and has been adapting the idea and methodology of PulseNet to develop a model for a future national laboratory-based surveillance system for all bacterial infectious disease.We summarized the development progress for the PulseNet China system and discussed it as a model for the future of China's national laboratory-based surveillance system.

Clonal Analysis of Neisseria meningitidis Serogroup B Strains in South Africa, 2002 to 2006: Emergence of New Clone ST-4240/6688

From August 1999 through July 2002, hyperinvasive Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (MenB) clonal complexes (CCs), namely, ST-32/ET-5 (CC32) and ST-41/44/lineage 3 (CC41/44), were predominant in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. This study analyzed MenB invasive isolates from a national laboratory-based surveillance system that were collected from January 2002 through December 2006. Isolates were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) (n = 302), and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and PorA and FetA typing were performed on randomly selected isolates (34/302, 11%). In total, 2,400 cases were reported, with the highest numbers from Gauteng Province (1,307/2,400, 54%) and Western Cape Province (393/2,400, 16%); 67% (1,617/2,400) had viable isolates and 19% (307/1,617) were identified as serogroup B. MenB incidence remained stable over time (P = 0.77) (average incidence, 0.13/100,000 population [range, 0.10 to 0.16/100,000 population]). PFGE (302/307, 98%) divided isolates (206/302, 68%) into 13 clusters and 96 outliers. The largest cluster, B1, accounted for 25% of isolates (76/302) over the study period; its prevalence decreased from 43% (20/47) in 2002 to 13% (8/62) in 2006 (P < 0.001), and it was common in the Western Cape (58/76, 76%). Clusters B2 and B3 accounted for 10% (31/302) and 6% (19/302), respectively, and showed no significant change over time and were predominant in Gauteng. Randomly selected isolates from clusters B1, B2, and B3 belonged to CC32, CC41/44, and the new CC4240/6688, respectively. Overall, 15 PorA and 12 FetA types were identified. MenB isolates were mostly diverse with no single dominant clone; however, CC32 and CC41/44 accounted for 35% and the new CC4240/6688 was the third most prevalent clone.

Congenital toxoplasmosis in France in 2007: first results from a national surveillance system

When immunocompetent people become infected with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, the disease is generally asymptomatic. However, transplacental transmission of T. gondii may lead to severe congenital infection including in utero abortion, foetal death, or neurological or ocular damage of the foetus. France has had a national programme to prevent congenital toxoplasmosis since 1978. However, although estimated seroprevalence in pregnant women has fallen from 84% in the 1960s to 44% in 2003, no reliable data have been available on the annual number of cases of congenital toxoplasmosis or the severity of infection. In 2006, the French National Institute for Public Health Surveillance (Institut de Veille Sanitaire) and the National Reference Centre for Toxoplasmosis recommended that a national laboratory-based surveillance system be used for the surveillance of the disease. In 2007, 31 laboratories reported at least one congenital case through the surveillance system, giving a total of 272 cases. A total of 11 terminations of pregnancy were reported (six abortions and five foetal deaths). Of the live-born cases, 206 were asymptomatic, 28 were symptomatic and seven had a severe form of the disease. As there were 818,700 births in France and French overseas departments in 2007, the overall prevalence of congenital toxoplasmosis observed that year was 3.3 (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.9 to 3.7) per 10,000 live births and the incidence rate of the disease at birth was 2.9 (95% CI: 2.5 to 3.2) per 10,000 live births; the estimated incidence rate of symptomatic congenital toxoplasmosis was 0.34 (95% CI: 0.2 to 0.5) cases per 10,000 live births.

Molecular basis and clonal nature of increasing pneumococcal macrolide resistance in South Africa, 2000–2005

The prevalence and molecular epidemiology of pneumococcal macrolide resistance in South Africa was investigated. Minimum inhibitory concentrations and serotypes of pneumococcal isolates causing invasive disease from 2000–2005 ( n = 15 982), collected through a national laboratory-based surveillance system, were determined. Randomly selected isolates from 2005 (51%; 260/508) had resistance mechanisms determined, and clonality was investigated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) ( n = 64) and multilocus sequence typing ( n = 7). Macrolide resistance increased from 9% (160/1828) in 2000 to 14% (508/3656) in 2005 ( P < 0.001). Serotype 14 was the most common macrolide-resistant serotype (40%; 760/1921). The majority of macrolide-resistant isolates (75%; 1437/1921) displayed the macrolide–lincosamide–streptogramin B (MLS B) phenotype. Of the strains screened genotypically, 57% (147/260) contained erm(B), 27% (71/260) contained mef(A) and 15% (40/260) contained erm(B) and mef(A); 1% (2/260) contained ribosomal mutations. Macrolide-resistant isolates were predominantly penicillin-non-susceptible and multidrug-resistant. Isolates clustered according to serotype by PFGE, and 22% (14/64), 11% (7/64) and 5% (3/64) of isolates were related to the Taiwan 19F-14, England 14-9 and Spain 9V-3 global clones, respectively. Routine use of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) could reduce the burden of macrolide-resistant pneumococcal disease in South Africa.

Tandem Repeat Analysis for Surveillance of HumanSalmonellaTyphimurium Infections

In Denmark, as part of the national laboratory-based surveillance system of human enteric infections, all Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium isolates are currently subtyped by using phage typing, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). We evaluated the value of real-time typing that uses multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeats analysis (MLVA) of S. Typhimurium to detect possible outbreaks. Because only a few subtypes identified by PFGE and phage typing account for most infections, we included MLVA typing in the routine surveillance in a 2-year period beginning December 2003. The 1,019 typed isolates were separated into 148 PFGE types and 373 MLVA types. Several possible outbreaks were detected and confirmed. MLVA was particularly valuable for discriminating within the most common phage types. MLVA was superior to PFGE for both surveillance and outbreak investigations of S. Typhimurium.

Impact of conjugate Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine introduction in South Africa

To analyse trends in reported invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease in South Africa within the first five years of introduction of conjugate Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine in the routine child immunization schedule. We used national laboratory-based surveillance data to identify cases of invasive H. influenzae disease between July 1999 and June 2004, and submitted isolates for serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The absolute number of Hib cases (reported to the national surveillance system) among children below one year of age decreased by 65%, from 55 cases in 1999-2000 to 19 cases in 2003-04. Enhanced surveillance initiated in 2003, identified human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infection and incomplete vaccination as contributing factors for Hib transmission. The total number of laboratory-confirmed cases of H. influenzae remained unchanged because non-type b disease was being increasingly reported to the surveillance system concomitant with system enhancements. Children with non-typable disease were more likely to be HIV-positive (32 of 34, 94%) than children with Hib disease (10 of 14, 71%), P = 0.051. Recent Hib isolates were more likely to be multidrug resistant (2% in 1999-2000 versus 19% in 2003-04, P = 0.001). Data from a newly established national laboratory-based surveillance system showed a decrease in Hib disease burden among South African children following conjugate vaccine introduction and identified cases of non-typable disease associated with HIV infection.

A regional outbreak of S. Typhimurium in Denmark and identification of the source using MLVA typing.

In Denmark, as part of the national laboratory-based surveillance system of human enteric infections, all S. Typhimurium isolates are currently sub-typed using phage typing, antibiogram typing, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). However, the discriminatory ability of PFGE is not always high enough to discriminate within certain phage types, and it is not always possible to separate unrelated and related isolates. We have therefore applied multiple locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) for surveillance typing of S. Typhimurium since 2004. In May and June 2005, an outbreak with 26 cases of S. Typhimurium infection was identified by MLVA. The isolates were fully sensitive and had one of the most frequently occurring Danish phage types (DT12) and PFGE types. S. Typhimurium DT12 isolates from routine surveillance of animals and food were typed using MLVA and PFGE for comparison with the human isolates. The typing results revealed that an isolate from a pig herd and its corresponding slaughterhouse located in the same geographic region as the outbreak had the same PFGE and MLVA type as the human isolates. In contrast, all other DT12 isolates investigated, which had the same PFGE profile, had different MLVA types. The conclusion that the pig herd was the source of the human infections was supported by patient information, and pork from the herd stopped entering the market on 29 June. MLVA may contribute significantly to both surveillance and outbreak investigations of S. Typhimurium, as without MLVA typing this outbreak would not have been found nor its origin traced.

A review of the Salmonellosis surveillance systems in Italy: evolution during the course of time within the international framework.

This paper focuses on the history of the two systems that have been adopted in Italy for the surveillance of Salmonellosis and describes their respective characteristics. Both systems have been subsequently modified: (1) The National Laboratory-based Surveillance System (NLSS) which was created in 1967 for Enteropathogenic Bacteria and subsequently, in 1992, became part of the European computerised Laboratory-based Surveillance System of Salmonellae isolates, the SALM-NET (Salmonella network); (2) The National Infectious Disease Reporting System (NIDRS) which was set up in the 1930s, revised in 1990 and has been used, since 1994, along with the Infectious Disease Informative System (IDIS). The results obtained with the different surveillance systems are presented: (1) The number of isolates from the laboratory surveillance from 1973 to 1997 are described. Total Salmonellae isolates have a slope with an increasing trend from 4372 isolates in 1973 to 15,041 isolates in 1988 drastically dropping to 5479 isolates in 1990 and increasing again to 13,596 isolates in 1993. Attention is given particularly to the epidemiology of S. enteritidis in Italy which increased progressively since 1982 (225 isolates) to 5435 isolates in 1994. S. typhimurium showed a slightly increasing trend in the period 1973-1988 (from 1694 to 3383 isolates) then decreased for reaching again previous levels. S. typhi showed a marked reduction from 573 isolates in 1973 to 33 isolates in 1996. On the contrary, other less frequent serotypes increased. (2) The number of cases of Salmonellosis reported during 1971-1997 are also presented. Other Infections by Salmonellae increased from 12,516 cases in 1976 (renamed Non Typhoidal Salmonellosis in 1990) to more than 20,000 cases in 1992. The number of cases of Typhoid Fever and Infections by S. paratyphi are also described. Particular attention has to be paid to the parallel trends of Salmonellosis using both surveillance systems: number of isolates and number of cases, particularly comparing Other Infections by Salmonellae and total Salmonellae isolates: after the 1992-1993 peak, an initial decrease was observed.
