Latest Developments in the Field of Optical Communications for Small Satellites and Beyond

In this paper, we introduce our vision for the future non-terrestrial networks beyond 5G and discuss the possible implementation scenarios for free-space optical communication technology in it, especially regarding the satellite communications segment. We show and discuss some of the latest system developments globally in the field of optical communications for small satellites. Together with the latest projects in the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) of Japan for payloads for small moving platforms, a specific trend in the field is clearly defined. We further show our newly developed ground station for the experiments with our High-speed Communication with Advanced Laser Instrument (HICALI) payload and discuss the main challenges in a satellite to ground optical link and our specific solution providing preliminary test results of the performance.

Development and Space-Qualification of a Miniaturized CubeSat’s 2-W EDFA for Space Laser Communications

The Japanese National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) is currently developing a high-performance laser-communication terminal for CubeSats aimed at providing a high-datarate communication solution for LEO satellites requiring transmission of large volumes of data from orbit. A key aspect of the communication system is a high-power optical amplifier capable of providing enough gain to the transmitted signals to be able to close the link on its counterpart’s receiver with the smallest impact in terms of energy and power on the CubeSat’s platform. This manuscript describes the development of a miniaturized 2-W space-grade 2-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) compatible with the CubeSat form factor, showing the best power-to-size ratio for a space-qualified EDFA to the best of the authors’ knowledge. Performance results under realistic conditions as well as full space qualification and test are presented, proving that this module can support short-duration LEO-ground downlinks as well as long-duration intersatellite links.

Development of a miniaturized laser-communication terminal for small satellites

Free-space optical communication is becoming a mature technology that has been demonstrated in space a number of times in the last few years. The Japanese National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has carried out some of the most-significant in-orbit demonstrations over the last three decades. However, this technology has not reached a wide commercial adoption yet. For this reason, NICT is currently working towards the development of a miniaturized laser-communication terminal that can be installed in very small satellites, while also compatible with a variety of other different platforms, meeting a wide span of bandwidth requirements. The strategy adopted in this design has been to create a versatile lasercom terminal that can operate in multiple scenarios and platforms without the need of extensive customization. This manuscript describes the current efforts in NICT towards the development of this terminal, and it shows the prototype that has been already developed for the preliminary tests, which are described as well. These tests will include the performance verification using drones as a first step before installing the prototype on High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) to carry out long-distance communication links between HAPS and ground, and later with the Geostationary (GEO) orbit, covering this way a wide range of operating conditions. For these tests, in the former case the counter terminal is a simple transmitter in the case of the drone and a transportable ground station in the case of the HAPS, and in the latter case the counter terminal is the GEO satellite ETS-IX, foreseen to be launched by NICT in 2023.

Statistical analysis of short-wave fadeout for extreme space weather event estimation

Solar flares trigger an increase in plasma density in the ionosphere including the D region, and cause the absorption of radio waves, especially in high-frequency (HF) ranges, called short-wave fadeout (SWF). To evaluate the SWF duration and absorption statistically, we analyze long-term (36 years) ionosonde data observed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). The minimum reflection frequency, fmin, is used to detect SWFs from 15-min-resolution ionosonde observations at Kokubunji, Tokyo, from 1981 to 2016. Since fmin varies with local time (LT) and season, we refer to dfmin, which is defined as fmin subtracted by its 27-day running median at the same LT. We find that the occurrence of SWFs detected by three criteria, (i) dfmin ≥ 2.5 MHz, (ii) dfmin ≥ 3.5 MHz, and (iii) blackout, during daytime associated with any flare(s) greater than the C1 class is maximized at local noon and decreases with increasing solar zenith angle. We confirm that the dfmin and duration of SWFs increase with the solar flare class. We estimate the absorption intensity from observations, which is comparable to an empirical relationship obtained from sudden cosmic noise absorption. A generalized empirical relationship for absorption from long-distance circuits shows quantitatively different dependences on solar flare flux, solar zenith angle, and frequency caused by different signal passes compared with that obtained from cosmic noise absorption. From our analysis and the empirical relationships, we estimate the duration of extreme events with occurrence probabilities of once per 10, 100, and 1000 years to be 1.8–3.6, 4.0–6.8, and 7.4–11.9 h, respectively. The longest duration of SWFs of about 12 h is comparable to the solar flare duration derived from an empirical relationship between the solar flare duration and the solar active area for the largest solar active region observed so far.

Development of Direct-Detection Doppler Wind Lidar for Vertical Atmospheric Motion

Wind is fundamental in many atmospheric phenomena. Global wind profile observation is important to improve numerical weather prediction (NWP) and various meteorological studies. Wind profile observations are measured mainly by radiosonde networks. A Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) is a useful remote sensing technique for wind measurement. DWL would provide us with a wind profile having high vertical resolution, low bias, and good precision. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) studies DWL has been developing various DWL. In the paper, we report development of a 355-nm direct-detection DWL and describe recent results of a 2-µm coherent DWL at NICT.

Real Time and Automatic Analysis Program for WASAVIES: Warning System for Aviation Exposure to Solar Energetic Particles

AbstractA physics‐based warning system for aviation exposure to solar energetic particles, WASAVIES, is improved to be capable of real‐time and automatic analysis. In the improved system, the count rates of several neutron monitors at the ground level, as well as the proton fluxes measured by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), are continuously downloaded at intervals of 5 min and used for checking the occurrence of ground level enhancement (GLE). When a GLE event is detected, the system automatically determines the model parameters for characterizing the profiles of each GLE event and nowcasts and forecasts the radiation dose rates all over the world up to 24 hr after the flare onset. The performance of WASAVIES is examined by analyzing the four major GLE events of the 21st century. The accuracy of the nowcast data obtained by the model is well validated by the reproducibility of the current neutron monitor count rates and GOES proton fluxes as well as the flight‐dose measurements. On the other hand, the forecast data are reliable only when the evaluated parameters are stable, as expected in the model. A Web interface of WASAVIES is also developed and will be released in the near future through the public server of National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT).

Integral design method for simple and small Mars lander system using membrane aeroshell

To execute Mars surface exploration missions, spacecraft need to overcome the difficulties of the Mars entry, descent, and landing (EDL) sequences. Previous landing missions overcame these challenges with complicated systems that could only be executed by organizations with mature technology and abundant financial resources. In this paper, we propose a novel integral design methodology for a small, simple Mars lander that is achievable even by organizations with limited technology and resources such as universities or emerging countries. We aim to design a lander (including its interplanetary cruise stage) whose size and mass are under 1 m3 and 150 kg, respectively. We adopted only two components for Mars EDL process: a “membrane aeroshell” for the Mars atmospheric entry and descent sequence and one additional mechanism for the landing sequence. The landing mechanism was selected from the following three candidates: (1) solid thrusters, (2) aluminum foam, and (3) a vented airbag. We present a reasonable design process, visualize dependencies among parameters, summarize sizing methods for each component, and propose the way to integrate these components into one system. To demonstrate the effectiveness, we applied this methodology to the actual Mars EDL mission led by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and the University of Tokyo. As a result, an 80 kg class Mars lander with a 1.75 m radius membrane aeroshell and a vented airbag was designed, and the maximum landing shock that the lander will receive was 115 G.

Performance estimation of an oil-free linear compressor unit for a new compact 2K Gifford-McMahon cryocooler

Since 2012, a new, compact Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocooler for cooling superconducting single photon detectors (SSPD) has been developed and reported by Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI). Also, it was reported that National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) developed a multi-channel, conduction-cooled SSPD system. However, the size and power consumption reduction becomes indispensable to apply such a system to the optical communication of AdHoc for a mobile system installed in a vehicle. The objective is to reduce the total height of the expander by 33% relative to the existing RDK-101 GM expander and to reduce the total volume of the compressor unit by 50% relative to the existing CNA-11 compressor. In addition, considering the targeted cooling application, we set the design cooling capacity targets of the first and the second stages 1 W at 60 K and 20 mW at 2.3 K respectively. In 2016, Hiratsuka et al. reported that an oil-free compressor was developed for a 2K GM cryocooler. The cooling performance of a 2K GM expander driven by an experimental unit of the linear compressor was measured. No-load temperature less than 2.1 K and the cooling capacity of 20 mW at 2.3 K were successfully achieved with an electric input power of only 1.1 kW. After that, the compressor capsule and the heat exchanger, etc. were assembled into one enclosure as a compressor unit. The total volume of the compressor unit and electrical box was significantly reduced to about 38 L, which was close to the target of 35 L. Also, the sound noise, vibration characteristics, the effect of the compressor unit inclination and the ambient temperature on the cooling performance, were evaluated. The detailed experimental results are discussed in this paper.

LEO-to-ground optical communications using SOTA (Small Optical TrAnsponder) – Payload verification results and experiments on space quantum communications

Free-space optical communications have held the promise of revolutionizing space communications for a long time. The benefits of increasing the bitrate while reducing the volume, mass and energy of the space terminals have attracted the attention of many researchers for a long time. In the last few years, more and more technology demonstrations have been taking place with participants from both the public and the private sector. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan has a long experience in this field. SOTA (Small Optical TrAnsponder) was the last NICT space lasercom mission, designed to demonstrate the potential of this technology applied to microsatellites. Since the beginning of SOTA mission in 2014, NICT regularly established communication using the Optical Ground Stations (OGS) located in the Headquarters at Koganei (Tokyo) to receive the SOTA signals, with over one hundred successful links. All the goals of the SOTA mission were fulfilled, including up to 10-Mbit/s downlinks using two different wavelengths and apertures, coarse and fine tracking of the OGS beacon, space-to-ground transmission of the on-board-camera images, experiments with different error correcting codes, interoperability with other international OGS, and experiments on quantum communications. The SOTA mission ended on November 2016, more than doubling the designed lifetime of 1-year. In this paper, the SOTA characteristics and basic operation are explained, along with the most relevant technological demonstrations.

Development of a valved non-lubricated linear compressor for compact 2K Gifford-McMahon cryocoolers

Recently, a new, compact Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocooler for cooling superconducting single photon detectors (SSPD) has been developed and reported by Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI) [1]. It was reported that National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) developed a multi-channel SSPD system in which two or more channels were mounted on a GM cryocooler, and achieved a world-top-class performance [2]. However, the applications of such SSPD system were restricted due to its relatively large size and power consumption compared with a semiconductor system. Owing to the development of an SSPD system with a portable cryocooler system which can be installed in a vehicle, it is possible to apply such system to the optical communication of AdHoc [3], and to flexibly construct a large capacity optical line in a time of disaster. For such system, the size and power consumption reduction becomes indispensable. The objective is to reduce the total height of the expander by 33% relative to the existing RDK-101 GM expander and to reduce the total volume of the compressor unit by 50% relative to the existing CNA-11 compressor. In addition, considering the targeted cooling application, we set the design temperature targets of the first and the second stages to 1 W and 20 mW of heat load at 60 K and 2.3 K, respectively. In 2015, Hiratsuka reported that a new valved non-lubricated compressor was developed for a 2K GM cryocooler [4]. The cooling performance of a 2K GM expander operated by an experimental unit of the linear compressor was measured, and preliminary experiments were conducted. No-load temperature was 2.19 K, with 1 W and 14 mW heat load, the temperature was 48 K at the first stage and 2.3 K at the second stage, with an input power of about 1.2 kW. After that, the compressor efficiency has been improved by reducing losses, and the compressor input power has been reduced by 25%. The detailed experimental results are discussed in this paper.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Backscatter Detection System Using Resource Allocating Network with Data Selection

manually. To deal with unlabeled packets, first, the detection system would learns general rules of DDoS backscatter using information from 80/TCP and 53/UDP. After the learning process, the generalized detection system is used to detect the DDoS backscatter from unlabeled packets. This detection system consists of two main modules which are pre-processing and classifier. In the pre-processing module, the incoming packets are transformed into feature vectors. As for the classifier module, since it is important to detect DDoS backscatter from all protocols as early as possible, we use Resource Allocating Network (RAN) with data selection. Using this classifier, the learning time is shortened because the classifier only learns essential data. Here, essential data means the data located in “well learned” regions, in which the classifier gives trustable predictions. To quickly search for the regions closest to given data, the well-known Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) method is used. The performance of the proposed detection system is evaluated using 9,968 training data from labeled packets and 5,933 test data from unlabeled packets. They are collected from January 1st, 2013 until January 20th, 2014 at National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan. The results indicate that the detection system can detects the DDoS backscatter with high detection rate within a short time.

URBAN AREA EXTRACTION USING AIRBORNE X-BAND FULLY POLARIMETRIC PI-SAR2 IMAGERY

Abstract. In this paper, we present a method to extract urban areas from X-band fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. It is known that very high resolution (VHR) SAR can extract buildings, but it requires more processes to map urban areas that should include other objects. The proposed method is mainly composed of two classifications. One classification uses total power of scattering and volume scattering derived by using four component decomposition method with correction of the polarization orientation angle (POA) effect. The other classification uses polarimetric coherency between SHH and SVV . The two results are intersected and final urban areas are extracted after post-classification processing. We applied the proposed method to airborne X-band fully polarimetric SAR data of Polarimetric and Interferometric Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar System (Pi-SAR2), developed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan. The validation show that the results of the proposed method were acceptable, with an overall accuracy of approximately 80 to 90% at 100-m spatial scale.

An Online Malicious Spam Email Detection System Using Resource Allocating Network with Locality Sensitive Hashing

In this paper, we propose a new online system that can quickly detect malicious spam emails and adapt to the changes in the email contents and the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) links leading to malicious websites by updating the system daily. We introduce an autonomous function for a server to generate training examples, in which double-bounce emails are automatically collected and their class labels are given by a crawler-type software to analyze the website maliciousness called SPIKE. In general, since spammers use botnets to spread numerous malicious emails within a short time, such distributed spam emails often have the same or similar contents. Therefore, it is not necessary for all spam emails to be learned. To adapt to new malicious campaigns quickly, only new types of spam emails should be selected for learning and this can be realized by introducing an active learning scheme into a classifier model. For this purpose, we adopt Resource Allocating Network with Locality Sensitive Hashing (RAN-LSH) as a classifier model with a data selection function. In RAN-LSH, the same or similar spam emails that have already been learned are quickly searched for a hash table in Locally Sensitive Hashing (LSH), in which the matched similar emails located in “well-learned” are discarded without being used as training data. To analyze email contents, we adopt the Bag of Words (BoW) approach and generate feature vectors whose attributes are transformed based on the normalized term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF). We use a data set of double-bounce spam emails collected at National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan from March 1st, 2013 until May 10th, 2013 to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. The results confirm that the proposed spam email detection system has capability of detecting with high detection rate.

Carrier-phase two-way satellite frequency transfer over a very long baseline

In this paper we report that carrier-phase two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT) was successfully demonstrated over a very long baseline of 9000 km, established between the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). We verified that the carrier-phase TWSTFT (TWCP) result agreed with those obtained by conventional TWSTFT and GPS carrier-phase (GPSCP) techniques. Moreover, a much improved short-term instability for frequency transfer of 2 × 10−13 at 1 s was achieved, which is at the same level as previously confirmed over a shorter baseline within Japan. The precision achieved was so high that the effects of ionospheric delay became significant; they are ignored in conventional TWSTFT even over a long link. We compensated for these effects using ionospheric delays computed from regional vertical total electron content maps. The agreement between the TWCP and GPSCP results was improved because of this compensation.

Resilient ICT research based on lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake

The creation of countermeasures against a large-scale disaster is an important focus of research for the future. This article briefly introduces some Japanese research and development activities for disaster-related technologies, including those carried out by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). First, we discuss lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011. We show that the preferred communication tool in a disaster situation depends on the time that has elapsed after the disaster. We then summarize several research projects for developing robust and dependable communication networks, including an information distribution platform, and outline the research projects of NICT's Resilient ICT Research Center as well.

Comparison of SMILES ClO profiles with satellite, balloon-borne and ground-based measurements

Abstract. We evaluate the quality of ClO profiles derived from the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) on the International Space Station (ISS). Version 2.1.5 of the level-2 product generated by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) is the subject of this study. Based on sensitivity studies, the systematic error was estimated as 5–10 pptv at the pressure range of 80–20 hPa, 35 pptv at the ClO peak altitude (~ 4 hPa), and 5–10 pptv at pressures ≤ 0.5 hPa for daytime mid-latitude conditions. For nighttime measurements, a systematic error of 8 pptv was estimated for the ClO peak altitude (~ 2 hPa). The SMILES NICT v2.1.5 ClO profiles agree with those derived from another level-2 processor developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) within the bias uncertainties, except for the nighttime measurements in the low and middle latitude regions where the SMILES NICT v2.1.5 profiles have a negative bias of ~ 30 pptv in the lower stratosphere. This bias is considered to be due to the use of a limited spectral bandwidth in the retrieval process of SMILES NICT v2.1.5, which makes it difficult to distinguish between the weak ClO signal and wing contributions of spectral features outside the bandwidth. In the middle and upper stratosphere outside the polar regions, no significant systematic bias was found for the SMILES NICT ClO profile with respect to data sets from other instruments such as the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), the Odin Sub-Millimetre Radiometer (SMR), the Envisat Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS), and the ground-based radiometer at Mauna Kea, which demonstrates the scientific usability of the SMILES ClO data including the diurnal variations. Inside the chlorine-activated polar vortex, the SMILES NICT v2.1.5 ClO profiles show larger volume mixing ratios by 0.4 ppbv (30%) at 50 hPa compared to those of the JAXA processed profiles. This discrepancy is also considered to be an effect of the limited spectral bandwidth in the retrieval processing. We also compared the SMILES NICT ClO profiles of chlorine-activated polar vortex conditions with those measured by the balloon-borne instruments: Terahertz and submillimeter Limb Sounder (TELIS) and the MIPAS-balloon instrument (MIPAS-B). In conclusion, the SMILES NICT v2.1.5 ClO data can be used at pressures ≤ ~30 hPa for scientific analysis.

Time Comparison Experiments Between the Qzs-1 and its Time Management Station

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) developed the time management system of the first Quasi-Zenith Satellite (QZS-1) in order to monitor the onboard clock as a part of the satellite navigation system. While an onboard clock is usually estimated together with the orbit of the satellite, the system described here enables the direct measurement of an onboard clock by comparing it with a ground clock by making use of a two-way time and frequency transfer which removes most of the propagation errors. Our system achieves a measurement precision of about 25 picoseconds which is an order of magnitude better than the precision of the clock parameters obtained from the combined orbit and clock estimation. HCl and ClO profiles inside the Antarctic vortex as observed by SMILES in November 2009: comparisons with MLS and ACE-FTS instruments

Abstract. We present vertical profiles of hydrogen chloride (HCl) and chlorine monoxide (ClO) as observed by the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) on the International Space Station (ISS) inside the Antarctic vortex on 19–24 November 2009. The SMILES HCl value reveals 2.8–3.1 ppbv between 450 K and 500 K levels in potential temperature (PT). The high value of HCl is highlighted since it is suggested that HCl is a main component of the total inorganic chlorine (Cly), defined as Cly ≃ HCl + ClO + chlorine nitrate (ClONO2), inside the Antarctic vortex in spring, owing to low ozone values. To confirm the quality of two SMILES level 2 (L2) data products provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), vis-à-vis the partitioning of Cly, comparisons are made using other satellite data from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS). HCl values from the SMILES NICT L2 product agree to within 10% (0.3 ppbv) with the MLS HCl data between 450 and 575 K levels in PT and with the ACE-FTS HCl data between 425 and 575 K. The SMILES JAXA L2 product is 10 to 20% (0.2–0.5 ppbv) lower than that from MLS between 400 and 700 K and from ACE-FTS between 500 and 700 K. For ClO in daytime, the difference between SMILES (JAXA and NICT) and MLS is less than ±0.05 ppbv (100 %) between 500 K and 650 K with the ClO values less than 0.2 ppbv. ClONO2 values as measured by ACE-FTS also reveal 0.2 ppbv at 475–500 K level, resulting in the HCl / Cly ratios of 0.91–0.95. The HCl / Cly ratios derived from each retrieval agree to within −5 to 8 % with regard to their averages. The high HCl values and HCl / Cly ratios observed by the three instruments in the lower stratospheric Antarctic vortex are consistent with previous observations in late Austral spring.
