Survey on acoustic preferences in Korean music practice spaces

.In 2021, the acoustic quality criteria for music practice rooms was standardized as ISO 23591. This standard will be very useful in constructing and utilizing music education facilities to train excellent music players. "Gugak," Korea's traditional music, is taught and related performers are trained at major national educational institutions. Recently, a variety of Korean music content has been introduced internationally. The Korean traditional music practice room is used similarly to a general music practice room. However, the acoustic characteristics of traditional houses where Korean traditional music is played do not have a long reverberation time and are flat across frequency bands, so we investigated what acoustic characteristics actual Korean traditional music players prefer as a practice space. The room acoustic characteristics of Korean music practice spaces at Seoul National University were measured, and a preference survey was conducted on professional performers who actually use the practice spaces. In the future, we plan to investigate preferences for Korean traditional music practice spaces using real-time sound audibility technology.

In view of the growth of international migration, including in Latin America, the present investigation aimed to analyze the history of old and new friendships of Latin American immigrants throughout their lives in the new country (Brazil, other Latin American countries, Spain and Portugal). More specifically, it was intended to investigate how recent migration affects existing friendships and the formation of new ones, with people of any nationality and culture. 40 immigrants participated in this descriptive-qualitative study (70% women and 50% between 30 and 39 years old), divided into four groups: A) 20 Latin Americans who lived in Brazil; B) three Brazilians who lived in another Latin American country; C) 12 Brazilians who lived in Spain; and D) five Brazilians who lived in Portugal. The instrument used was a questionnaire with open questions, sent and received by e-mail, producing written reports. In total, direct contacts were made by e-mail with national and international universities and educational institutions, as well as by messages on social networks with approximately 1,000 people, between August 2014 and January 2016. A detailed analysis of the data was conducted with a coding process (interpretation of the statements), and subsequent organization of the material into categories, based on qualitative content analysis. The main results of the study pointed out that most of the close friends are of the same gender and of the same nationality, and most of them reside in the country of origin of the immigrant. The ties in the immigrant's country of origin are close friendships, of many years, whose main means of contact are Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, telephone, e-mail, internet and in person, and the frequency of contacts varies from daily to monthly. According to the participants, it is very good to see friends from their home country, with the most common shared activities being eating or going to restaurants, drinking or going to bars and staying at home. Both old (compatriots) and new friends (usually natives of the new country or other immigrants) are important in the process of migration from one culture to another. The beginning of friendships in the new country happens, for the most part, in the academic environment, through other friends and through relatives. Finally, Latin American immigrants in Brazil and Brazilians in other Latin American countries demonstrated a mostly positive view of natives before establishing friendships with them; and Brazilian immigrants in Spain and Portugal a negative view.

Answering a Call to Action: Reducing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Using a Healthcare Champion Model.

Prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) remain critical public health issues. Alcohol use in pregnancy is a leading preventable cause of birth defects, developmental disabilities, and learning disabilities. Alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) is effective at reducing excessive alcohol use. However, this clinical preventive service remains critically underutilized in primary care. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called for the creation of FASD Champion programs to promote clinician education about FASDs. Six professional health organizations and groups providing reproductive and child health services set out to create FASD Champion programs. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists FASDs Prevention Program was created to focus on reducing alcohol-exposed pregnancies. The American Academy of Pediatrics' Champion program maintains the goal of improving health outcomes for children with FASDs by improving pediatricians' diagnostic capacity. The American Academy of Family Physicians has prioritized training family physician champions to improve the delivery of alcohol SBI among adult patients. The University of Alaska Anchorage has partnered with the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health, the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses to assure advanced practice registered nurses and midwives have the knowledge and skills to prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies and FASDs. The American Association of Medical Assistants has prioritized expanding the knowledge and skills of medical assistants related to promoting alcohol-free pregnancies. Finally, the Champions program at the University of Texas at Austin was established to train health social workers in alcohol SBI. Through the advocacy, education, and mission of these 6 health sectors in collaboration with national organizations and educational institutions, the evidence-based approach of alcohol SBI is being disseminated throughout the United States to reduce the harmful effects of prenatal alcohol exposure.

Examining the influence of international organizations in globalizing education policy in Kuwait: a qualitative study

PurposeGlobalization, and more specifically international organizations, has had a major effect upon national education systems worldwide. Understandably, the academic literature covering this phenomenon has expanded at a prolific rate. This study contributes to this body of knowledge by examining how the international organizations affect global education policy, as seen via the lens of a Kuwaiti context.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed a qualitative data collection approach using semi-structured interviews with 27 key figures involved in policymaking at national educational institutions in Kuwait. Each interview was coded for recurring themes.FindingsThree main themes emerged from data analysis: (1) policy adoption and reformulation, (2) curriculum and pedagogical changes and (3) evaluation and accountability mechanisms. This study’s findings demonstrated that globalization processes and international organizations have profoundly affected Kuwait’s national educational policies.Originality/valueThis research forms the foundation for further investigations into how international organizations have affected national and subnational educational decision-making and reforms.

The Investigation into Pronunciation Problems Faced by Teacher-Trainees: A Case Study at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Cambodia

This study investigates pronunciation challenges among English major -students at National Institute of Education, focusing on segmental and supra-segmental pronunciation issues, contributing factors, and potential remediation strategies. The study employed qualitative approach utilizing research apparatuses adjusted from previous studies. Additionally, ten teacher trainees with at least six years of English language learning background consented to participate in this study, while four lecturers were also incorporated. The findings were identified primarily with labiodental, dental, velar, alveolar, and palatal consonants, and with the monophthong sounds /i:/ and /ɒ/, and diphthongs /eɪ/ and /ɪə/. Factors influencing pronunciation proficiency include inadequate qualified teachers, insufficiently structured language programs, first language interference, and limited access to learning resources, alongside motivational and environmental factors, age, and beliefs. Recommendations for improvement emphasize integrating technology and social media for accessing pronunciation tutorials, extending instructional hours, and encouraging regular English-speaking practices.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION OF EDUCATIONAL LEADERS: THE EXPERIENCE OF UTRECHT UNIVERSITY (THE NETHERLANDS)

The problem of developing managerial leadership potential for higher education, which acts as a direct catalyst for the organization of quality educational services in Ukraine and increasing the competitiveness of national higher education institutions, remains a priority at the stage of Ukraine's integration into the European Union. The article first examines the issue of professional training of educational leaders and managers in the field of higher education on the example of Utrecht University (the Kingdom of the Netherlands). Taking into account the review of previous studies carried out in the national space, as well as the study of relevant continental European sources, the data on the Dutch higher education system are updated. Based on the analysis of specialized legislation in the field of higher education and relevant institutional acts, the approaches to master's training in the Netherlands are characterized, the key among which is interdisciplinary. It is found that master's programmes are offered at research universities and universities of applied sciences; their duration varies from 1 to 4 years and ranges from 60 to 240 ECTS credits. It has been found that the undisputed trend in master's training is the uniqueness of educational programmes that correspond to the mission and vision of universities. It is established that among the offers on the market of educational services that further offer professional activities in the field of higher education management, there are master's degree programmes in pedagogy, management, art, administration and management, sociology, psychology, etc. The profiles of educational programmes of the University of Utrecht, in particular, specialties with a diverse academic load, which offer graduates after successful graduation positions in the Government of the Netherlands, sectors dealing with education, the Dutch Education Inspectorate, non-governmental educational organizations, as developers and reformers of educational policies, are considered.

The future of EFL teachers’ professional development in Türkiye: A Swot Analysis

A clear understanding of teachers' continuing professional development (CPD) needs is crucial for planning appropriate in-service training activities. The study adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing a methodology centered around roundtable discussions that integrate a SWOT matrix for a comprehensive analysis of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers' CPD needs. The inductive content analysis approach to the data (Strauss and Corbin, 1990), specifically within the deductive structure of the four broad categories of SWOT component was applied, followed by a thematic approach (Merriam and Tisdell, 2016). Engaging five experienced K–12 EFL teachers across three consecutive roundtable sessions to explore both advantageous and challenging internal and external factors and propose solutions, this study highlights the utility of the SWOT analysis as an effective tool in needs assessment. The framework emerging from unified recommendations suggests fostering informal CPD avenues, such as communities of practice and opportunities for teacher mobility. The study concludes with forward-looking recommendations urging policymakers to develop cohesive CPD programs tailored for EFL teachers in public schools in Türkiye. These recommendations could potentially be generalized, enabling local and national educational institutions and organizations to provide effective CPD avenues for EFL teachers

GLOBAL TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION: PROSPECTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND MODERNIZATION OF DOMESTIC POLICY

The relevance of conducting a detailed analysis of global trends in higher education and their reflection in the national educational policy today is due to a number of important factors. Monitoring global trends is important because they identify new challenges and opportunities for national education systems. Firstly, in connection with the growth of global competition in the labor market, national systems of higher education must adapt to international standards and requirements in order to prepare graduates who will be competitive on the world stage. Global technological and economic trends require higher education to constantly update programs to provide graduates with up-to-date skills. Secondly, understanding global trends in higher education is important for building an ef­fective national education policy. Modern challenges, such as the international mobility of students and scientists, call for the development of strategies that promote interaction with other countries and the implementation of the best global practices in domestic educational systems. Thirdly, due to the diversity of cultures and languages, the globalization of higher educa­tion requires the development of strategies that will promote cultural diversity and intercultural understanding among students and teachers. Thus, a thorough analysis of global trends in higher education and their impact on domes­tic educational policy becomes strategically important for national governments and educational institutions. The introduction discusses the importance of understanding and taking into account global trends for modernizing domestic educational strategies. It is noted that global transformations create a need to harmonize domestic policies with the requirements of the modern world. Next, the article examines in detail the impact of globalization on the competitiveness of higher education. The factors that determine the quality and development of education in the national context are studied, in particular, how global competition affects the choice of students and the attractiveness of higher education institutions. In addition, the article considers the prospects of modernization of domestic educational policies in the conditions of globalization. Special attention is paid to the need to adapt programs, structures and training methods to international standards and expectations. The conclusions summarize the main conclusions regarding the importance of adapting domestic educational policies to global trends to ensure the sustainable development of higher education and the training of competitive personnel on the international labor market.

Skills of the 21st Century: Adaptation of Educational Programs of the National Higher Education Institutions

The purpose of the article is to identify the skills needed by graduates of higher education institutions in the 21st century for successful employment on the labour market. Achieving the set goal involved the following tasks: identifying trends in the skills needs of the 21st century on the European and national labour market; establish a qualification gap in the skills of higher education seekers; justify the need to adapt the educational programs of national higher education institutions in accordance with the needs of the labour market.
 Based on the analysis of strategic documents of the European Union and analytical materials, modern trends in the labour market were identified. The skills required by the European labour market were established and the skills in demand in the national labour market under martial law conditions were determined. The advantages of understanding the trend of demand and supply in the labour market for different categories of stakeholders: the state, employers, higher education institutions and individuals are determined.
 The largest qualification gap in the skills of applicants of national higher education institutions was revealed, namely: cooperation; teamwork; emotional intelligence; productivity (time management) and justified the need to adapt educational programs of national higher education institutions in accordance with the needs of the labour market.

Improving Local Educational Services with Distance Education: The Case of Tepebaşı City Institute

Municipalities, one of the most important elements of local governments in Türkiye, are among the leading organizations that conduct intensive educational activities, apart from institutions whose main function is education, such as the Ministry of National Education and higher education institutions. Local educations organized by municipalities and mostly aimed at helping the personal, social, and professional development of the local people appeal to a very wide audience of millions varying in age, education status, social status, disability status, and more. Considering its sphere of influence, it is thought that local education services conducted by municipalities assume an important role within the Turkish education system. Based on this assumption, the City Institute Project was initiated in collaboration with Anadolu University and the Tepebaşı Municipality of Eskişehir. Within the scope of the project, the structure of educational services carried out by local governments, its place in national education policies, and its sphere of influence were first investigated. In line with the findings obtained, 10 new courses were prepared based on a teaching model designed to support and improve local educational services with distance education. The prepared courses were made available to the masses via the Tepebaşı City Institute Lifelong Learning Portal, which was developed from scratch for the needs of the project and were evaluated according to the opinions of the students. In summary, this study examined the role and impact of local educational services within the scope of national education policies, based on the findings and results obtained from the Tepebaşı City Institute Project. Additionally, experiences related to how distance education theory could be utilized to improve local educational services were shared.

The article analyzes the regulatory and legal framework of the information and educational environment116of higher educational institutions and identifies ways to improve it, which will provide conditions for the effective implementation of distance education.The purpose of the article is to determine ways to improve the legal framework of the information and educational environment of higher education institutions, which will provide conditions for the effective implementation of distance education.Taking into account the existing trends, the Strategy for the Development of Higher Education in Ukraine for 2021-2031 defines the mission of higher education, which consists in ensuring "sustainable innovative development of Ukraine through training of highly qualified specialists, creation and dissemination of knowledge, formation of intellectual, social and spiritual capital of society, ready for the challenges of the future"In accordance with the mission of higher education outlined in the Strategy for the Development of Higher Education in Ukraine for 2021-2031, the advantages, disadvantages and opportunities of the educational system of our country were analyzed; the priority principles of the development of domestic higher education were formed, including academic freedom, orientation to ensuring the quality of education, orientation to the comprehensive development of the individual, inclusiveness and diversity. Ways to achieve the tasks set in the strategy are specified in operational goals, one of which is the introduction of innovative technologies and distance learning in higher education. To achieve this goal, the following tasks have been defined: creation of an industry of innovative technologies and teaching aids that meet the global scientific and technical level; digitization of all processes in the higher education system; normalization of distance learning as a form of obtaining higher education.The internationalization of higher education is seen as a logical and irreversible process in the conditions of the globalization of society, which calls for an increase in the number of intercultural programs and the creation of appropriate regulatory support for their successful functioning. Therefore, we believe that Ukraine's entry into the world educational space requires a balanced approach, taking into account possible prospects and the use of the intellectual potential of national educational institutions, which should be reflected in the relevant regulatory acts.Considering the complexity and multifacetedness of the chosen topic, we consider the need for further theoretical research and their practical implementation to be the perspectives of scientific exploration.

Conceptual and Contextual Analysis of Spirituality in Adolescents with Grounded Theory Approach

This research aims to contribute to understanding the concept of spirituality among individuals of the Z Generation by delineating more specific boundaries within the field of spiritual studies. The connections within the minds of adolescent individuals between the concept of spirituality and the areas of socialization that start in childhood and accelerate during adolescence, within the context of their own cultural codes, have been examined to address the need for understanding. Given the developmental stage that the youth of the 21st century are in, where they construct their own concepts of value, it is noteworthy how they establish cognitive contexts, social interaction areas, and their associations with the concept of spirituality at this critical juncture. The notion of spirituality among young individuals, which is continuously discussed to a certain extent in relevant media and public domains, necessitates opening up to their world, and understanding the spiritual perception needs and expectations of young individuals, from their perspective. This study aims to reveal the perception of spirituality in adolescents, understanding the conceptual, operational, traditional, environmental, and socio-political codes of spirituality within their contexts. In line with this purpose, the behaviors attributed to spirituality by young individuals, the values they inherit as cultural, spiritual heritage, their awareness of the spiritual values of their peer groups, their perspectives on the societal order they live in, the characteristics they emphasize in their self-identifications, the relationship they establish between religion and spirituality, and their perceived levels of religiousness have been investigated. To both trace the connections of the individual and interpret the regions being studied and analyzed, a predictive paradigm was adopted, and a qualitative design was preferred. Ethical committee permission was obtained on 09.03.2023. The research was conducted between 10.04.2023 and 10.05.2023 for data collection. The sample group was composed of students attending formal education in Ankara, from Yenimahalle Tevfik İleri Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, Mamak Hüseyin Gazi Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, and Mamak Volkan Gürbüzalp Anatolian High School. Data were obtained from 36 young individuals aged between 13 and 18, through 11 fully structured open-ended questions. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. Following one-on-one interviews, the data obtained were analyzed through thematic coding and grounded theory analysis. As a result of the study, participants' spirituality was shaped around three core categories. When positioning their spirituality, adolescent individuals create relational connections, such as friendships, institutions (religious and national education institutions), social relationships, politics, and structural connections. They develop their concepts of spirituality by drawing on information from family, culture, and religious institutions. Furthermore, in intrinsic experiences, the concept of spirituality shaped through material phenomena, self-state, and connection with the transcendent stands apart from others. Each core category provides a detailed structure of adolescent individuals' spirituality through sub-categories. Contrary to common belief, it was observed that the concept of spirituality among adolescent individuals is similarly nourished as in adults. Additionally, feelings related to individual well-being, material possessions received as gifts, and established family and friendship bonds, were found to be part of adolescents' definitions of spirituality, distinct from a purely religious context. Feelings of individual well-being are defined as their spirituality, independent of religious sentiment. These feelings encompass the sense of belonging felt in established family and friendship bonds, the memory of gifted and cherished items, and the pride of being an individual who displays socially accepted behavior and does what is right when interacting with society. Portuguese research on physical education and sport didactics-a critical discussion.

This article presents a discussion of research in Physical Education and Sport Didactics in Portugal. It starts by situating it from an historical perspective, placing the 1980s as the beginning era, mainly based on the studies provided by the two first Physical Education higher education institutes of the country. The initial research, first based on master and doctoral dissertations, progressed to ongoing projects that have been disseminated in international and national journals and books. This development is also reported from the theoretical, conceptual, and methodological perspectives, showing how it has informed the quality of Physical Education and teacher education as the two main research strands to be described, however, acknowledging that a strand on sports coaching and coach education exists. On teaching Physical Education, the article discusses the elements relative to the teacher and to the student, focusing from the immediate and short-term to the distant and long-term events that lead into young adulthood's active lifestyles. In this analysis, research on curriculum and assessment are also reported. On physical education teacher education, the article shows the prevalence of the post-primary Physical Education to argue for the need for more research on primary-level education, and discusses the diverse foci from initial teacher education to in-service education practises. In line with current trends in research, we suggest a set of four features for the future research agenda: (1) addressing short to long-term outcomes of Physical Education; (2) adopting multifactorial and multi-layered perspectives of analysis; (3) embracing inter- and multidisciplinary designs; and (4) taking comparative perspectives within and between European countries, and between Europe and other continents. We conclude that these features need to focus on four levels of integration and cooperation: (a) integration between the research initiatives and the needs of the professional field; (b) integration between research on teaching and learning, teacher education and the curriculum; (c) cooperation between the different national higher education and professional institutions; and (d) integration in the international research agenda by leading and participating in project partnerships which are needed to fully and effectively implement such agenda.

"A Look Under the Hood": Reflections on the Inaugural RIME Mentorship Program.

In 2021, Research in Medical Education (RIME) celebrated 60 years of advancing scholarship in health professions education (HPE). At that time, the nation's educational institutions faced a public reckoning on the long-standing pandemic of racism that sweltered in their practices and policies, laid bare by COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matters movement. RIME responded with a mentorship program for minoritized early career HPE faculty, which aims to amplify their voices in settings where their experiences and contributions are frequently dampened. The program fosters professional development through structured activities, participation as RIME committee interns, and formal mentorship channels to support career growth and offer experiences with scholarly publishing. This commentary was written by the first cohort of RIME mentees who are HPE scholars from various professions and diverse backgrounds with struggles traversing professional landscapes as immigrants and as individuals with minoritized identities and hopes for belonging in medical and educational institutions. In this commentary, the mentees describe the merits of the RIME mentorship program and what it meant to them and their unique marginalities. They also examine opportunities for improvements within the program to further reduce barriers faced by minoritized early career HPE faculty who often face limited support with scholarly activities.

Values of Clinical Observational Learning in Work-Integrated Learning in Health Sciences Education: Students' Views and Experiences

Students' competency is a critical concern in health sciences education. Therefore, work-integrated learning has become an integral part of health sciences programmes at higher education institutions. This study explored students' views and experiences of clinical observational learning to promote work-integrated learning in the acupuncture programme at a South African university. The authors used the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) model as a theoretical lens to guide this study, involving five participants who were purposively selected. A qualitative descriptive single case study design was employed within an interpretivist paradigm. Five participants were recruited for this study. The authors employed semi-structured interviews as the data collection instrument. The data were analysed using the six-step thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students agreed that clinical observational learning significantly improved clinical competency. They reported that clinical observational learning assisted them in memorising content knowledge and obtaining practical experience. Furthermore, participants highlighted that a lack of space, insufficient time, and incompetency of observed student practitioners negatively affected their learning experience. This study concluded that higher education institutions should employ clinical observational learning in the curriculum to assist in transitioning students from theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. It is recommended that further research must be conducted at national and international higher education institutions.

The attitude of students and teachers towards MOOC usage for their academic and professional development: A comparative study of two case study sites

The massive open online course (MOOC) and online learning concepts have received a lot of attention from educational stakeholders all around the world as a result of COVID-19. Initial studies demonstrated that people may use MOOCs as a tool for academic and professional advancement. This micro-study was conducted at two adjacent national higher educational institutions (HEIs) in India as case study sites (CSS) to learn more about the attitude of the students and faculties there. The research strategy used for the study was a mixed-method approach. To collect data, a tool that was created by the researchers was used. There was a type of atypical relationship between the institutions and the professionals. Comparing CSS2 students and CSS1 teachers to their peers from other institutions, it was discovered that they both displayed more optimistic attitude. The attitude of all four groups were discovered to be favorable. The study served as an example of some educational ramifications in the neighborhoods.

Analysis of Private Higher Education in Croatia

Croatia recognises the growing importance of education, significantly higher education, and as a result, investment in these fields is a crucial element and part of the country's strategic priority. The main goal of this article is to provide an analysis of the private higher education market by taking into account the characteristics of the private higher education (PrHE) market as well as private universities, polytechnics, and colleges located within the territory of the Republic of Croatia. Thus, to analyse the market for private higher education, it is necessary to examine its organisational and structural aspects and its financial operations using fundamental sector indicators and the movement of financial indicators over the last five years. The analysis of financial indicators shows that the private higher education sector is liquidity and financial stability. Our research demonstrates the need for Croatia to re-evaluate the incentives provided by its regulatory framework for the growth of private universities. A similar legislative framework would also align with higher education reform and the needs of the Bologna process. The global partnership of national and international educational institutions and the cooperation between the private and public higher education sectors are underdeveloped. A national strategy for its support is necessary to guarantee the ongoing growth and development of the private higher education sector. Rethinking teacher education in pandemic times and beyond.

With disruptions such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic drastically changing our lives and challenging all nations to rethink our current paradigms of teaching and learning and paradigms of living and working, the world needs to educate our young to be future-ready in more deliberate ways. Future-ready learners need to have a lifelong learning mindset that is instilled with the right values, attributes, skills, competencies and knowledge so as to ensure that their nation survives upcoming disruptions and crises and thrives amidst and in spite of the great challenges faced. Singapore is learning to adapt to the fast-changing and unpredictable landscape, seeking solutions to succeed beyond the difficulties and seizing opportunities amidst the myriad challenges faced. Drawing lessons from international best practices while contextualising them to our local needs and developing our own brand of innovations, teacher education at the National Institute of Education (NIE) anchors itself in taking a values-driven, evidence-informed and future-focused approach, building upon the past foundations. This article will detail how Singapore's sole teacher preparation institute is rethinking teacher education by seeking to articulate the archetype of the future-ready teacher, provide greater learner agency and flexibility and develop interdisciplinary programmes, and reimagining, restructuring and streamlining teacher education programmes. Ultimately, the aim is to nurture teacher educators, teachers, students and the entire education ecosystem to be future-ready.
