The North-Eastern Region of Scotland has had a culture of its own that extends back to prehistoric times. It is also circumscribed geographically and is well adapted for the regionalisation of the child health services. The Region is now one of the five into which Scotland is divided for the purposes of the National Health Service (Scotland) Act, 1947; and, as determined by the Secretary of State, the area in which the North-Eastern Regional Hospital Board "exercises functions with respect to the administration of the hospital and specialist services" consists of the City of Aberdeen; the Counties of Kincardine, Banff and Moray; and, in the far north, the island counties of Orkney and Shetland.
