Evaluation of the role of urban domestic wastewater treatment systems for greenhouse gases emissions in China

Rapid urbanization has exacerbated the dual challenge of mitigating water pollution and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The present study offers insights into the actual role of urban domestic wastewater treatment systems by shedding light on their capacity to act as GHG emitters. We introduce a modelling framework to calculate GHG emissions from wastewater treatment systems in China over the past two decades. Our analysis showed that treated wastewater volume increased by over 4.5 times, but GHG emissions also increased by 2.9 times. The annual emissions from wastewater treatment were -on average- nearly 60 Tg CO2-eq over the past two decades, accounting for <1% of the total national emissions. We also found a significant spatial variability with thirteen developed areas contributing >70% of the GHG emissions. Constructions and operations of wastewater treatment systems approximately accounted for 17% and 83% of the GHG emissions, respectively. Our study also proposes a hierarchical governance framework based on ten major regions that could maximize the efficiency in mitigating water pollution and GHG emissions in China.

The opposite innovation impacts of air and water pollution regulations: Evidence from the total emissions control policy in China

This paper uses a unique firm-level data set from China’s two most developed regions, the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD), to examine the effects of environmental regulations on innovation. Variations in air and water pollution reduction plans under the Total Emissions Control Policy from the 10th to the 12th Five-Year Plans (2001–2015) are explored to measure the stringency of environmental regulations faced by industrial firms. To alleviate endogeneity concerns, we calculate city-level fair pollution reduction volumes which rely only on each city’s contribution to national pollution emissions in the base years and use them as instrumental variables of reduction plans. The two-stage least square estimations reveal that while air pollution regulation (APR) motivates industrial firms to innovate, water pollution regulation (WPR) hinders firm innovation. We confirm the opposite effects by estimating the impact on entrepreneurs’ perceptions of the importance of innovation in industrial firms’ development. Heterogeneity effect analysis shows that APR also hinders innovation in heavily air-polluting industries and state-owned firms, and WPR produces a decreasing innovation-hindering effect over time, which is larger in the YRD region than in the PRD region. We interpret the opposite impacts with the fact that water pollution discharges are more equally distributed across industries than air pollution emissions, resulting in more pervasive and stringent WPR.

Spatial autocorrelation and driving factors of carbon emission density of crop production in China.

Mitigating carbon emissions from crop production is essential for addressing global warming. At a macro-level, existing studies have often relied on the calculation of carbon emission intensity of crop production to understand comparable carbon effects between regions. However, this approach obscures the differences in crop planting scale and natural attributes across regions, leaving room for improvement in the methods and scope of analysis. To extend the existing research, we proposed an idea for calculating the carbon emission density of crop production based on planting area. Additionally, we developed an analytical framework for driving factors of carbon emission density of crop production from a spatial interaction perspective. The provincial carbon emission density of crop production in mainland China between 2000 and 2020 was calculated, and spatial econometric models were utilized to investigate the spatial autocorrelation and driving factors. The results indicate that the national average carbon emission density of crop production was 1.462 t/hm2 annually. Over 21years, the carbon emission density of agricultural materials, rice cultivation, soil management, and straw burning evolved from 0.384 to 0.470 t/hm2, 0.409 to 0.367 t/hm2, 0.171 to 0.169 t/hm2, and 0.317 to 0.448 t/hm2, respectively. The global Moran's index indicated a positive spatial autocorrelation of carbon emission density of crop production and the subdivided carbon sources among provinces. Regarding direct effects, an increase in the proportion of paddy fields in cropland composition and irrigation efficiency would significantly promote the carbon emission density, while factors such as cropland area, multiple cropping, agricultural personnel numbers, departmental proportion, and disaster degree would decrease the local carbon emission density. Certain factors, such as cropland area and agricultural disasters, had a spatial spillover effect on carbon emission density between provinces. The study suggests harnessing key drivers and spatial spillover effects to achieve regional low-carbon crop production.

Aging Increases Global Annual Food Greenhouse Gas Emissions up to 300 Million Tonnes by 2100.

The dietary preferences of the elderly population exhibit distinct variations from the overall averages in most countries, gaining increasing significance due to aging demographics worldwide. These dietary preferences play a crucial role in shaping global food systems, which will result in changed environmental impacts in the future such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We present a quantitative evaluation of the influence of population aging on the changes in GHG emissions from global food systems. To achieve this, we developed regional dietary coefficients (DCs) of the elderly based on the Global Dietary Database (GDD). We then reconciled the GDD with the dataset from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to calculate the food GHG emissions of the average population in each of the countries. By applying the DCs, we estimated the national food GHG emissions and obtained the variations between the emissions from aged and average populations. We employed a modified version of the regional integrated model of climate and the economy model (RICE) to forecast the emission trends in different countries based on FAO and GDD data. This integrated approach allowed us to evaluate the dynamic relationships among aging demographics, food consumption patterns, and economic developments within regions. Our results indicate that the annual aging-embodied global food GHG emissions will reach 288 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent (Mt CO2e) by 2100. This estimation is crucial for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and researchers as it provides insights into a potential future environmental challenge and emphasizes the importance of sustainable food production and consumption strategies to GHG emission mitigations associated with aging dietary patterns.

Toward Low-Carbon Rice Production in China: Historical Changes, Driving Factors, and Mitigation Potential.

Under the "Double Carbon" target, the development of low-carbon agriculture requires a holistic comprehension of spatially and temporally explicit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with agricultural products. However, the lack of systematic evaluation at a fine scale presents considerable challenges in guiding localized strategies for mitigating GHG emissions from crop production. Here, we analyzed the county-level carbon footprint (CF) of China's rice production from 2007 to 2018 by coupling life cycle assessment and the DNDC model. Results revealed a significant annual increase of 74.3 kg CO2-eq ha-1 in the average farm-based CF (FCF), while it remained stable for the product-based CF (PCF). The CF exhibited considerable variations among counties, ranging from 2324 to 20,768 kg CO2-eq ha-1 for FCF and from 0.36 to 3.81 kg CO2-eq kg-1 for PCF in 2018. The spatiotemporal heterogeneities of FCF were predominantly influenced by field CH4 emissions, followed by diesel consumption and soil organic carbon sequestration. Scenario analysis elucidates that the national total GHG emissions from rice production could be significantly reduced through optimized irrigation (48.5%) and straw-based biogas production (18.0%). Moreover, integrating additional strategies (e.g., advanced crop management, optimized fertilization, and biodiesel application) could amplify the overall emission reduction to 76.7% while concurrently boosting the rice yield by 11.8%. Our county-level research provides valuable insights for the formulation of targeted GHG mitigation policies in rice production, thereby advancing the pursuit of carbon-neutral agricultural practices.

Kinetic numerical analysis of electromagnetic ion cyclotron instability in non-thermal Vasyliunas-Cairns distributed plasmas

Enhanced fluctuations driven by non-thermal features of particle-distributions are reported frequently in the variety of space plasma observations. In the rare-collisional plasmas, these amplified fluctuations scatter the particles in various direction and governs the dynamics of space plasma environments effectively. Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves usually responsible for low frequency interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations. These are natural emissions in numerous natural environments of plasmas which usually operates underneath the ion/proton cyclotron frequencies. These are identified as left hand circular polarization (L-mode) with a propagation directed towards the ambient magnetic field. Various space missions and in situ measurements unveil the perpendicular temperature anisotropies of non-thermal populations of ions/protons i.e. in heliospheric regions and solar wind. These proton temperature anisotropies excite EMIC instability which in turn the pitch angle scatters the ions and restrained the anisotropy in certain ranges. In Vasyliunas-Cairns distributed hybrid non-thermal electromagnetic proton plasma, the transverse dielectric response function (TDERF) is calculated for L-mode. It is then numerically solved in order to show the impact of non-thermal populations due to non-thermal parameters α and κ on the dispersion and growth rates of EMIC instability in low and high plasma beta β regimes. Possible variation in the real oscillatory and imaginary frequencies spectrum is also analyzed with the variation in the values of other pertinent parameters i.e. temperature anisotropy τ and β. The parametric numerical analysis of the present work has relevance about that plasma phenomena of space regions where non-thermal distributed populations are prevalent.

Resilience-Focused Approach: Exploring Practices of Pakistani Journalists in Covering Flood Risk

Climate change is a global risk since its origins and consequences transcend national boundaries. Non-Western media has also begun to recognise climate change as a significant issue that must be addressed. Despite its nominal national emissions and accounting for only 0.50% of global emissions, Pakistan is facing particularly severe consequences from disasters, floods, droughts, rising temperatures, cyclones, and rising sea levels as a result of global emissions. (Worldometers, 2023). Pakistan has been deemed at high risk of catastrophic climate events such as floods, storms, melting glaciers, landslides, rising sea levels, droughts, and food shortages by the World Bank. To avoid these impending tragedies, climate change supporters have emphasised the use of media for mass awareness, both at the policy and public levels. This study examines resilience-focused journalism in flood risk coverage in a climate-affected country like Pakistan. Journalists covering weather-related topics were questioned in order to investigate resilience-focused journalism practices based on motivation, techniques, and the impact of prominent news channels' coverage of flood risk. This study investigates the motivations, tactics, and impact of media coverage of flood risk in Pakistan, and it adds to our understanding of risk communication and news production practices by focusing on why and how broadcast journalists were unable to communicate flooding risks and influence policy change. The data was evaluated using thematic analysis after semi-structured in-depth interviews were done.

Biomass-based energy potential from the oil palm agroindustry in Colombia: A path to low carbon energy transition

The energy valorization of biomass is critical to meeting the GHG mitigation goals and supporting the energy transition. The oil palm agroindustry, one of the fastest-growing sectors in Colombian agriculture, is characterized by low-efficiency technologies for bioenergy production. This study assessed four biomass-based energy generation scenarios considering the availability of biomass-based energy applications in backpressure or extraction-condensation turbines and anaerobic digestion systems in 28 palm oil mills, accounting for 68 % of Colombian crude palm oil production. Overall, the four scenarios can support 61–227 MW of electricity, coinciding with 0.4–1.5 % of the national installed capacity, while producing 44 to 222 kWh of surplus electricity per ton of fresh fruit bunch processed, with a levelized cost of electricity between 92.4 and 201.1 USD∙MWh−1 that highlights the economic feasibility. The emission of GHGs accounting for 22.2 to 55.1 gCO2eq per kWh could reduce the national GHG emissions by up to 2.1 %.

Research Status and Development Trend of Household Gas Stoves

With the increasing global demand for pollution-free cooking energy, the development of efficient and clean domestic gas stoves has been promoted. This article first provides a comprehensive overview of the thermal performance and pollutant emissions of household gas stoves through stove protocols, and organizes relevant design and development literature to gain a deeper understanding of their current development status; Secondly, the impact of natural gas, thermal performance, emission performance, and control systems on energy conservation and emission reduction of household gas stoves was analyzed one by one; Finally, the trend of intelligent development of domestic gas stoves in China was discussed. In summary, this study can provide useful references for the design and theoretical research of domestic gas stoves in China.

Spatial disparities of ozone pollution in the Sichuan Basin spurred by extreme, hot weather

Abstract. Under the influence of climate change, the increasing occurrence of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, has led to an enhanced frequency of ozone (O3) pollution issues. In August 2022, the Sichuan Basin (SCB), a typical large-scale geographical terrain located in southwestern China, experienced the most severe heatwave in the last 20 years. The heatwave led to substantial disparities in O3 levels across the region. Here, by integrating observations, machine learning, and numerical simulations, we aim to understand the diverse O3 formation mechanisms in two megacities, Chengdu (western location) and Chongqing (eastern location). Observational data showed that Chengdu experienced a consecutive 17 d period of O3 exceedance, in contrast to Chongqing, where O3 concentrations remained below the standard. Meteorological and precursor factors were assessed, highlighting high temperatures, intense solar radiation, and overnight accumulative pollutants as key contributors to O3 concentrations. The interplay of isoprene, temperature, and O3, alongside the observation-based box model and MEGAN simulations, underscored the significant role of intensified biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in O3 formation. Interestingly, Chongqing exhibited nearly double the BVOC emissions of Chengdu, yet contributed less to O3 concentrations. This discrepancy was addressed through CMAQ-DDM (Decoupled Direct Method) simulations and satellite diagnosis by investigating the O3–NOx–VOC sensitivity. Notably, Chengdu displayed a VOC-driven sensitivity, while Chongqing showed a transitional regime. Moreover, the regional transport also played a pivotal role in the spatial divergence of O3 pollution. Cross-regional transport predominantly influenced Chongqing (contributing ∼ 80 %), whereas Chengdu was mainly affected by the emissions within the basin. The local accumulated pollutants gave rise to the atmospheric oxidizing capacity, resulting in a substantial photochemical contribution to O3 levels (49.9 ppbv h−1) in Chengdu. This comparison of the difference provides insights into the complex interplay of meteorology, natural emissions, and anthropogenic sources during heatwaves, guiding the necessity of targeted pollution control measures on regional scales.

Variability in surface CO2 flux: Implication for monitoring surface emission from geothermal fields

In the last decade the international push for the development of various renewable energy and the increase of the carbon tax for emitters, has put high enthalpy geothermal on a hot seat. Anthropic geothermal emissions in volcanic areas are not negligible due to the inherent nature of their volcanic setting but are counted regardless, similarly to a gas or coal power plant, despite their non-fossil carbon origin. Natural volcanic emissions are however poorly constrained due to the lack of field scale soil CO2 flux assessments. In this study, we analyse the temporal and spatial variations of soil CO2 flux and soil temperature in the Taupō region, Taupō Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, in the light of seasonal variation, field utilisation, and seismicity. Fortnightly monitoring between 2019 and 2023 at 8 sites across the Tauhara and Wairakei geothermal fields provides insight into changes of seasonal variations and geothermal activities. To understand the broader distribution of natural degassing and to compare the CO2 flux over decades, we repeated the CO2 flux survey between 2019 and 2023 and compared to previous results at Karapiti, Wairakei geothermal field (2004, 2018), Ring of Fire, Tauhara geothermal field (2006), and Rotokawa geothermal field (2003, 2011). Similar emissions but a change in the spatial distribution at Tauhara geothermal field suggests that human surface development has affected permeability in the shallow subsurface. In contrast, a similar spatial distribution of flux, but higher emissions, at Karapiti, Wairakei indicates the recovery or modification of reservoir pressure. Finally, a decrease of total emission flux of the natural geothermal features at Rotokawa coincides with the decrease of CO2eq emissions at the power stations. This study showcases the complexity and uncertainties of natural CO2 emission calculations and provides recommendations for future monitoring studies.

Sustained growth of sulfur hexafluoride emissions in China inferred from atmospheric observations

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a potent greenhouse gas. Here we use long-term atmospheric observations to determine SF6 emissions from China between 2011 and 2021, which are used to evaluate the Chinese national SF6 emission inventory and to better understand the global SF6 budget. SF6 emissions in China substantially increased from 2.6 (2.3-2.7, 68% uncertainty) Gg yr−1 in 2011 to 5.1 (4.8-5.4) Gg yr−1 in 2021. The increase from China is larger than the global total emissions rise, implying that it has offset falling emissions from other countries. Emissions in the less-populated western regions of China, which have potentially not been well quantified in previous measurement-based estimates, contribute significantly to the national SF6 emissions, likely due to substantial power generation and transmission in that area. The CO2-eq emissions of SF6 in China in 2021 were 125 (117-132) million tonnes (Mt), comparable to the national total CO2 emissions of several countries such as the Netherlands or Nigeria. The increasing SF6 emissions offset some of the CO2 reductions achieved through transitioning to renewable energy in the power industry, and might hinder progress towards achieving China’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2060 if no concrete control measures are implemented.

Carbon Loss from Earthquake Induced Landslides in Fiordland

Landslides triggered by two earthquakes in Fiordland, New Zealand, were mapped using Google Earth Pro retro satellite imagery (eye altitude of 1.5-2.5 km, enabling ± 50 m precision), then catalogued and classified in a GIS inventory. Ground acceleration during the 2003 Mw 7.2 Secretary Island Earthquake resulted in at least 1852 landslides, but the larger Mw 7.8 2009 Dusky Sound Earthquake had lower accelerations and produced only 313. Both events dislodged large swaths of native forest, grassland vegetation and soil from Fiordland’s steep slopes in similar proportions, some landing in rivers and fiords. The landslide maps and magnitude-frequency distributions show close similarity to a published Global Forest Loss dataset derived from 2001-2022 satellite imagery. Assuming forest loss in this wilderness is predominantly landslide-related, it enables the more-precise earthquake-induced landslide mapping to be placed in a longer-term context of other vegetation loss, mostly rainfall-induced landslides, during the past two decades. The total area of forest loss during the 2003 earthquake was anomalous, whereas during 2009 the earthquake losses were similar to areas of forest loss assumed to be rainfall-induced landslides throughout Fiordland each year. Carbon concentrations of landslide vegetation and soil were calculated by defining vegetation types from a published Land Cover Database, and soil organic carbon concentration from a 1 km resolution raster dataset. Total carbon loss from earthquake-induced landslides amounts to 2.05E+06 tonnes for the 2003 Mw7.2 and 2.17E+05 tonnes for the 2009 Mw 7.8. By way of comparison, New Zealand’s total annual carbon sequestration was 6.3E+06 tonnes in 2020. Earthquake-induced and rainfall-induced landslides are shown to account for significant changes in stored carbon and available carbon sequestration, especially in areas of densely vegetated land, such as Fiordland. Trees on smallholder farms and forest restoration are critical for Rwanda to achieve net zero emissions

Landscape restoration initiatives are mainly focusing on forest regeneration and agroforestry, especially in the Global South. However, due to a lack of monitoring tools, the carbon balance of restoration efforts remains poorly quantified. Here, we use satellite images from 2008 and 2019 to calculate carbon stocks for individual trees in Rwanda, a country which has been actively engaged in restoration activities over the past decade. We show that smallholder farmers on average planted about 3 trees per farm during 2008–2019, contributing about 50.4 million new trees at the national scale. The overall C sink of the new farmland trees was 0.13 Megagrams of Carbon per hectare per year, which is 6 times lower than gains observed from restoration of degraded forests (0.76 Megagrams of Carbon per hectare per year). If national greenhouse gas emissions remain at the level of 2019, agroforestry (~61% of national area coverage) and continued restoration of degraded natural forests (~0.5% of national area coverage) have the potential to offset about 80% of the national emissions before 2050. Our work monitors and quantifies progress and impact of landscape restoration projects and outlines a pathway to engage smallholder farmers with a limited number of on-farm trees into the expanding carbon market.

Air pollutant emissions and sources in Lao People’s Democratic Republic: a provincial scale analysis for years 2013-2019

Recent rapid economic development in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) has increased national fuel consumption, vehicle fleet, industrial output, waste generation, and agricultural production. This has contributed to national average ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollutant levels that are four times higher than World Health Organisation guidelines. Emission inventories are a key tool in understanding the major sources to these air pollution levels, and provide a starting point to identify where mitigation action can be targeted. A national air pollutant emission inventory has not been developed in Lao PDR and, combined with a limited air quality monitoring network means there is limited capacity to develop and track the effectiveness of mitigation actions. This study describes the first air pollutant emission inventory at the national and provincial scale for Lao PDR, covering 2013–2019. Emissions of nine air pollutants, and two greenhouse gases, were quantified using national statistics and international default emission factors. In 2019, national total PM2.5, Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Black Carbon (BC), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Non-Methane Volatile Organic Carbons (NMVOCs), and Ammonia (NH3) were 125, 83, 9.7, 26, 219, and 99 thousand tonnes respectively. Key source sectors include forest fires, residential cooking, agriculture, electricity generation, and transport. However, the contribution of different sources varies across provinces. Forest fires are the primary source determining the spatial trend of particulate air pollution while residential and agricultural emissions contribute more significantly to rural provinces such as Savannakhet. Key sectors in major urban provinces (Vientiane Capital and Xayaboury) are industry, transport and electricity generation. These sectors are also significant sources of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4), demonstrating the potential for identification, evaluation and prioritisation of actions that simultaneously improve air quality and achieve Lao PDR’s international climate change commitments.

Natural disasters, deforestation, and emissions affect economic growth in Somalia

This study ascertains the effect of natural disasters, deforestation, and emissions on economic growth in Somalia using annual time series spanning 1990–2018. Contrary to previous attempts, this study utilized the kernel regularized least squares (KRLS) technique, robust Granger causality in the presence of instabilities, and novel supremum right-tail Augment Dickey-Fuller unit root to test explosive behaviors in data series. While two date-stamped explosive behaviors are detected in economic growth (2003–2012, 2014–2016) and FDI (2004, 2016–2018), one explosive behavior is observed in capital formation (2010–2018) and population density (2010–2018). Moreover, time-varying granger causalities among sampled variables are observed. The empirical results show natural disasters and deforestation significantly undermine economic growth, whereas GHG emissions stimulate economic growth. Besides, while GHG emissions have increasing marginal effects, natural disasters and deforestation have decreasing marginal effects. The marginal effect of the interaction between natural disasters and temperature change is close to zero, implying that temperature changes do not mediate the disaster-growth nexus. Nevertheless, the study underscores the need for the implementation of environmental and economic policy reforms related to natural disaster preparedness, eliminating deforestation for charcoal exports while implementing a paradigm shift from domestic charcoal and firewood energy consumption to clean and renewable energy.

European CH4 inversions with ICON-ART coupled to the CarbonTracker Data Assimilation Shell

Abstract. We present the first application of the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic model with Aerosols and Reactive Trace gases (ICON-ART) in inverse modeling in inverse modeling of greenhouse gas fluxes with an ensemble Kalman smoother. For this purpose, we extended ICON-ART to efficiently handle gridded emissions, generate an ensemble of perturbed emissions during runtime and use nudging on selected variables to keep the simulations close to analyzed meteorology. We show that the system can optimize total and anthropogenic European CH4 fluxes on a national scale in an idealized setup using pseudo-observations from a realistic network of measurement stations. However, we were unable to constrain the sum of the natural emission sources of comparatively low magnitude. Also regions with low emissions and regions with low observational coverage could not be optimized individually for lack of observational constraints. Furthermore, we investigated the sensitivities towards different inversion parameters and design choices with 15 sensitivity runs using the same idealized setup, demonstrating the robustness of the approach when regarding some minimal requirements of the setup (e.g., number of ensemble members). Subsequently, we applied the system to real in situ observations from 28 European stations for three years, 2008, 2013 and 2018. We used a priori anthropogenic fluxes from the EDGARv6 inventory and a priori natural fluxes from peatlands and mineral soils, inland waters, the ocean, biofuels and biomass burning, and geology. Our results for the year 2018 indicate that anthropogenic emissions may be underestimated in EDGARv6 by ca. 25 % in the Benelux countries and, to a smaller degree, in northwestern France and southern England. In the rest of the domain, anthropogenic fluxes are corrected downwards by the inversion, suggesting an overestimation in the a priori. For most countries, this means that the a posteriori country-total anthropogenic emissions are closer to the values reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) than the a priori emissions from EDGARv6. Aggregating the a posteriori emissions across the EU27 + UK results in a total of 17.4 Tg yr−1, while the a priori emissions were 19.9 Tg yr−1. Our a posteriori is close to the total reported to the UNFCCC of 17.8 Tg yr−1. Natural emissions are reduced from their a priori magnitude almost everywhere, especially over Italy and Romania–Moldova, where a priori geological emissions are high, and over the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, where emissions from peatlands and wetlands were possibly unusually low during the hot and dry summer of 2018. Our a posteriori anthropogenic emissions for the EU27 + UK fall within the range estimated by global top-down studies but are lower than most other regional inversions. However, many of these studies have used observations from different measurement stations or satellite observations. The spatial pattern of the emission increments in our results, especially the increase in the Benelux countries, also agrees well with other regional inversions.

In national carbon emissions reduction targets as well as within the international climate change regime, production-based (or territorial) emissions are taken into account. Such accounting imposes the major responsibility for emissions on leading emerging economies where most of the carbon-intensive industries are allocated. It also provokes carbon leakage: stringent climate policies in one jurisdiction may lead to the reallocation of production and corresponding emissions to others where companies bear lower regulation costs. Consequently, asymmetry occurs. While most developed countries gradually reduce their emissions, they are simultaneously growing in emerging economies, with no significant progress in the mitigation of global climate change. This paper directs attention to an alternative way of emissions accounting – based on consumption. In this regard, emissions are attributed to the particular economy if they are embodied in goods consumed there regardless of where exactly these emissions are generated. This type of accounting supposes that emissions of major emerging economies are not their own choice but also the reflection of the international division of labour and the result of demand for carbon-intensive goods coming from major centres of consumption in developed countries. Regular calculation and disclosure of consumption-based emissions (along with production-based ones) and their gradual integration into the process of emissions reduction targetsetting would provide a new perspective on sharing responsibility for emissions, prevent carbon leakage and clearly demonstrate the need for international climate cooperation between exporters and importers of carbon-intensive goods, expand the scope of emissions under regulation, and give opportunities to countries to use the wider range of decarbonization tools. The latter would include those that involve the population in mitigation efforts and better link the price for carbon with the level of household consumption, which is important for coping with carbon inequality and promoting climate justice.

Regional disparities, dynamic evolution, and spatial spillover effects of urban-rural carbon emission inequality in China

ObjectiveThis study recalculates the carbon emissions of urban and rural residents in China, analyzing the dynamic evolution trends of urban and rural carbon emissions. It explores the spatial spillover effects centered around the inequality in carbon emissions between urban and rural areas.MethodsThe study calculates the carbon emissions of urban and rural residents in each province based on the IPCC method. Non-parametric kernel density estimation is employed to depict the dynamic evolution characteristics of national, urban, and rural carbon emissions. The Theil Index is used to measure the disparities in urban and rural carbon emissions in major strategic regions, further applying the Theil Index to evaluate the inequality of urban and rural carbon emissions across provinces. This helps identify the driving factors affecting the inequality of urban and rural carbon emissions and their spatio-temporal effects.FindingCarbon emissions from urban and rural residents in China present a divergent development pattern. Urban emissions have increased, with inter-provincial disparities widening; rural emissions tend to stabilize, with slight growth in inter-provincial gaps. The overall inequality of carbon emissions in various regions of China experiences a three-phase journey of rise, decline, and stabilization. Urban inequality first increases then decreases, while rural inequality gradually lessens, showing clear regional and urban-rural differences. Market and government factors significantly impact the inequality of urban and rural carbon emissions. The development of the digital economy aids in reducing inequality and generates significant spatial spillover effects. The relationship between economic development level and carbon emission inequality is U-shaped. Industrial structure optimization can reduce urban-rural inequality, but its spatial spillover effect is not significant. Government intervention has limited effects, while environmental regulations may increase inequality. Opening up to the outside world helps reduce inequality, and the impact of population density is complex.

The 4th International Conference on Tropical Silviculture (ICTS) 2023 Indonesia, in particular, grapples with the repercussions of deforestation, manifesting in elevated CO2 emissions, climate change, and the alarming loss of biodiversity. In this context, silvicultural science emerges as a pivotal player in steering forest management towards sustainability. Silvicultural science emerges a very vital role in sustainable forest management. Its vital role lies in preserving the functions of forest ecosystems—habitat, regulation, production, and information dissemination, increasing positive socio-economic impacts, including in terms of maintaining and increasing forest productivity and achieving sustainable development. Indonesian silviculturists are expected to demonstrate a high commitment to reducing national greenhouse gas emissions through applicable knowledge and practices. The study of forest ecosystems necessitates in-depth research, as well as the sharing and dissemination of results to various stakeholders.Recognizing the imperative of disseminating silvicultural studies, the International Conference on Tropical Silviculture (ICTS) stands as a crucial platform. Organized regularly by the Department of Silviculture, Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University, the 4th ICTS embraced a hybrid format on 24 August 2023. With the theme “Bridging Silviculture Knowledge and Practices to Foster the Achievement of SDGs and FOLU NET SINK 2030,” this conference aims to facilitate the exchange of information, knowledge, and innovations. The conference addressed seven key topics, including biodiversity, forest fire and climate change, agroforestry and forest plantation, ecosystem services, non-timber forest products, silviculture approach, and forest degradation and rehabilitation.I extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Rector of IPB University, the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, and the Head of the Silviculture Department for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in ensuring the success of this conference.
