USTC: A Powerhouse of Talent

Hefei is approximately one hour away from Nanjing and three hours away from Shanghai by train and the flight time from Hefei to Beijing is only two hours. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yellow Mountain (or Huangshan) is known for its scenery, sunsets, peculiarly-shaped granite peaks, pine trees, and views of the clouds from above. USTC is a national university located in Hefei, Anhui, a province that is probably known best for its world-famous Yellow Mountain or Huangshan (see the map). The University was founded in Beijing by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in September 1958 and relocated to Hefei in 1970 during the Cultural Revolution. USTC was established in response to the urgent need for the national economy, defense construction, and education in advanced science and technology. Today, it remains the only university directed by the CAS, while all other universities in China are under the leadership of the Ministry of Education. Because of its unique connection with CAS, USTC has received profound supports from all (over 120!) of the research institutes of CAS since its founding. A Study of the 156 Projects of Industrial Construction in 1950s

With the help of the Soviet Unions, 156 projects concerning industrial construction and national defense construction had been undergone during 1950s in the P.R.China, which had greatly affected on Chinese economy and society in the second half of the 20th century. Through an analysis of the 156 projects from three aspects, i.e., project identification and implementation, technology transfer by the projects and the results of the projects, the characteristic of technology transfer by the projects is identified and the historical position of the projects in Chinese economic and social development is evaluated. It concludes that the 156 projects enabled China to establish a relatively complete framework of basic industrial system and national defense industrial system and a relatively complete modern technological system, which have played a very important role in the process of Chinese industrialization.

Progress and Challenges in High Performance Computer Technology

High performance computers provide strategic computing power in the construction of national economy and defense, and become one of symbols of the country’s overall strength. Over 30 years, with the supports of governments, the technology of high performance computers is in the process of rapid development, during which the computing performance increases nearly 3 million times and the processors number expands over 10 hundred thousands times. To solve the critical issues related with parallel efficiency and scalability, scientific researchers pursued extensive theoretical studies and technical innovations. The paper briefly looks back the course of building high performance computer systems both at home and abroad, and summarizes the significant breakthroughs of international high performance computer technology. We also overview the technology progress of China in the area of parallel computer architecture, parallel operating system and resource management, parallel compiler and performance optimization, environment for parallel programming and network computing. Finally, we examine the challenging issues, “memory wall”, system scalability and “power wall”, and discuss the issues of high productivity computers, which is the trend in building next generation high performance computers.

On October 16, 1964, our country exploded her first atomic bomb and successfully carried out the first nuclear test. Without any help from foreign countries, we relied solely on our own strength to produce the atomic bomb. In a concerted effort, workers, engineering and technical personnel, science workers, PLA officers and soldiers, as well as all those who are engaged in construction of national defense conducted research and design work and succeeded in making on our own the first atomic bomb of our country. Since we have atomic bombs in our hands, U.S. imperialism can no longer bear itself in the arrogant manner of yore. Ideology and Political Control in North Korea

T he political annals of mankind are studded with events and empires moved in large part by the ideas and actions of a single leader. Looking at the contemporary world scene, one is impressed by the persistence of this familiar phenomenon: In Communist China one sees a fifth of mankind idolizing and professing to be guided solely by the sacred words of their aging leader-the of Mao Tse-tung. Not so prominent but nonetheless puzzling is the drama that is unfolding in China's neighbor and cultural protege, North Korea. In that increasingly pugnacious country an estimated 13 million people are frantically pursuing the twin goals of economic construction and national defense construction under the firm guidance of the revolutionary thought of Comrade Kim Il-song. When an ideology purports to move a nation, no matter how small, it commands attention, no matter how shallow it may turn out to be. It is the central aim of this article to delineate the main contours of Kim's political thought and to throw some light, however dim, on the manner in which it purportedly or actually serves as the primary instrument of political control in that country.
