Hemangiomas of the nasal tip.

The treatment of nasal hemangiomas is controversial. Results of nonsurgical treatment methods have been disappointing. In a series of 42 patients with nasal hemangioma, 22 patients underwent early excision. The open rhinoplasty approach proved safe and effective and yielded satisfactory long-term results. The article discusses protocols for evaluation and guidelines for treatment.

Early Excision of Nasal Hemangiomas

The presence of a nasal hemangioma may have a severe negative effect on the personality of a child. Early surgery in the involution phase has proved to be beneficial in this respect. The treatment of a consecutive series of nine patients who had surgery shortly after they were first seen for consultation is discussed. An extended rhinotomy (L-approach) was used in four of these patients. The results were uniformly good.

Management of congenital nasal malformations

With the exception of nasal defects associated with cleft lips and palates, most nasal anomalies are rarely encountered. An understanding of the complicated embryologic basis of congenital nasal anomalies assists in both the diagnosis and management of these unusual problems. The current management of choanal atresia, nasal dermoids, nasal gliomas, nasal encephaloceles, nasal hemangiomas, arhinia, and proboscis lateralis are all discussed. A multidisciplinary, team approach often provides affected children with the best chance for an optimum outcome. Because of the rarity of these anomalies, extensive experience with these lesions is probably limited to larger referral centers.

Nasal bone haemangiomas: rare entities treatable by craniofacial approach

Three cases of haemangioma of the nasal bone are illustrative of a rare clinical entity. These were treated by current craniofacial surgical techniques. The advantages of this approach are obvious minimising of the facial deformity, obtaining autologous cranial bone graft and rigid fixation to enhance stability and minimise resorption.

Hemangioma of the Nasal Septum: A Clinicopathological Profile

Septal hemangioma is a rare cause of epistaxis and nasal obstruction. Ten cases were seen in our center over 25 years and constitute 31% of all cases of nasal hemangioma. The male to female ration was 2.4:1; patient age ranged between 14 and 63 years (average, 39 years). The main presenting symptom was epistaxis with progressive nasal obstruction. There was a positive history of trauma in 7 cases. Symptoms varied between 1.5 months to 4 years (average, 13 months). All tumors but one were located anteriorly in the septum and measured between 0.5 and 2 cm in diameter. Histologically they were well-defined benign neoplasms covered with stratified squamous epithelium and showed varying degrees of ulceration. In eight cases the core was composed of proliferating capillary-type vessels, and two were cavernous. Operative intervention is the treatment of choice, with recurrences likely in the event of incomplete excision (two of the ten cases recurred).

Nasal hemangiomas of pregnancy are rare lesions. We present one such case with symptoms of nasal obstruction and epistaxis, with discussion of differential diagnosis and possible etiologies.
