Exploring the Development of Soft Science Fiction Films in the Chinese Film Market: Taking Dune 2 as an Example

Following the cessation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese film industry has experienced a resurgence, leading to fresh prospects for the Chinese science fiction film market. On March 8, 2024, the Chinese mainland will host the release of Dune 2, which has garnered significant popularity in the Chinese science fiction cinema market. The goal of this study was to investigate whether the popularity of the Dune series of movies in the Chinese film market persists. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential influence of the Dune series of movies on the Chinese science fiction film industry. This article provided an in-depth examination of the film "Dune 2" as a specific example. This analysis utilized the distinctive attributes of the "Dune 2" film series, as well as the commercial performance and value demonstrated in the Chinese film market. It combined fundamental business theory and cinematic art knowledge to conduct a thorough examination and observation. The study yields three key outcomes: the successful adaptation of movies based on popular intellectual properties, achieved by appropriately innovating the original IP; the advancement in filming technology, which propels the growth of science fiction movies by establishing a dedicated technology park for the film industry; the influence of film music on the coherence of movie narratives, through the creation of music that aligns with the unique style of each film. This study aimed to investigate the attributes of the Chinese science fiction film market and offers recommendations for the advancement of Chinese science fiction films.

Deep Learning-Based Analysis of Emotional and Content Relevance Between Bullet Screens and Subtitles as Movie Narrative Medium

This study borrows elements of film text in the field of film studies to develop the potential of data analysis using AI algorithms, while aiming to explore the emotional and content relevances between the two narrative mediums in film, bullet screens and subtitles, as well as the narrative effect variations that they bring about. The film sample Forever Young was analyzed by deep learning, data analysis, and knowledge discovery algorithms and tools. The BERT model was used to quantify the intensity of emotions and conduct fine-grained emotional classification of film characters. Emotion curves are plotted based on time series data. Thematic words are extracted by the LDA algorithm, and text similarity is computed using Word2Vec. The study found differences in emotional expression between bullet screens and subtitles, and they also exhibit strong emotional and content relevances. Yet, this correlation is not only influenced by temporal deviation factors but also by specific emotional types, different stages of story development, and the collective emotions of online views. The conclusion suggests that the effective collection of plot metronomes in film narratives helps reveal crucial plot nodes and emotional trends in films that cause obvious emotional changes, and placing them appropriately is fundamental for continuously attracting and retaining viewers’ attention. The interaction between bullet comments and subtitles is not only about emotional expression but also enhances the effectiveness of the film narrative. Overall, this study demonstrates the importance of database logic and technology in understanding and expressing film emotions and meanings, and providing new ideas and methods for enhancing film narrative effectiveness.

Mood Systems in the Movie Speech by Steve Biko in the “Cry Freedom”

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the mood types and their speech functions in the dialogue of Steve Biko in the movie "Cry Freedom." Utilising descriptive analysis as the primary methodological approach, the study systematically examines Biko's speech to uncover the distribution and implications of different mood types. The research methodology involved obtaining the transcribed speech, collecting clauses, identifying mood types, and drawing conclusions based on the findings. Results indicate the presence of 12 interrogative clauses and 23 declarative clauses, highlighting the prevalence of interrogation and assertion in Biko's discourse. Notably, imperative clauses were absent, reflecting the unique context of the speech within a courtroom setting. The analysis of interrogative clauses reveals a probing and challenging exchange, while declarative clauses convey assertions and affirmations. Overall, the study sheds light on the rhetorical strategies employed by Biko and underscores the significance of mood analysis in understanding persuasive communication within the movie's narrative.

As one of the main types of commercial films, horror films have developed rapidly in recent years, and the female characters in horror films often occupy the main part of the movie narrative. South Korea is very similar to China, as it is a country deeply influenced by Confucian culture. The two countries have more or less connections in shaping female images in horror films. This paper will conduct a comparative analysis of the female image characteristics in horror films between China and South Korea after the year 2000, in order to further investigate the multiple factors that affect film and television creation.

This paper entitled ‘Relevance of Teashops and Cafes as Spaces for Plot Progression in Malayalam Movies’ studies how films especially Malayalam films use the space of teashops and cafes in movies as a space of plot progression. Even though these locations are a necessary component in the production of Malayalam films, the role of teashops and cafes in the making of a film is a less-explored topic. The concept of space is crucial to the creation of films. A perfect setting is necessary for conveying all of the essence of the movie to the audience as well as the core idea of the movie. The movie makes use of space for a variety of things, including setting up sets, filming scenes, and establishing distinct places. When Malayalam movies are taken into consideration the presence of a teashop or a cafe has always been an inevitable part. The locations of teashops and cafes were given a lot of attention in movie narratives, particularly in Malayalam films. In the atmosphere of these places, significant story developments and character growth take place. The teashop settings have been a major part of setting the overall tone and portraying the beauty of the film's setting in the majority of ancient Malayalam films. The default network dominates neural responses to evolving movie stories

Neuroscientific studies exploring real-world dynamic perception often overlook the influence of continuous changes in narrative content. In our research, we utilize machine learning tools for natural language processing to examine the relationship between movie narratives and neural responses. By analyzing over 50,000 brain images of participants watching Forrest Gump from the studyforrest dataset, we find distinct brain states that capture unique semantic aspects of the unfolding story. The default network, associated with semantic information integration, is the most engaged during movie watching. Furthermore, we identify two mechanisms that underlie how the default network liaises with the amygdala and hippocampus. Our findings demonstrate effective approaches to understanding neural processes in everyday situations and their relation to conscious awareness.

This study expands the concept of trans-identity storytelling and explores its potential as a film criticism methodology. Trans-identity storytelling is a theory that studies narratives from the perspective of characters on the premise that the composition of movie narratives is developed with a focus on the change of person's identity. In order to be precise in the content of the concept, the etymological meaning of ‘Trans’ and the perception of existing scholars were examined, and the characteristics of incompleteness of words were useful in explaining beings that were wealthy or changed in the world's recognition system. The concept of ‘Trans-media storytelling’, a relative concept of trans-identity storytelling, was critically reviewed, and it was revealed that both industrial and humanistic values were included due to the content-oriented and human-oriented nature of the concept. In addition, trans identity storytelling is connected to the traditional narrative writing principle and embraces popularity in that it aims for a change in characters. On the one hand, the act of changing identity is a phenomenon that deviates from the universal realm in defiance of the solid recognition system of the existing society, and encompasses the value of diversity in terms of individuality and specificity against universality. In other words, trans- identity storytelling is a narrative theory that can convey their stories interestingly while illuminating people outside the mainstream of the world. Furthermore, if film criticism is a work to seek positive changes in the world by discovering profound content on the basis of film's outerization, trans-identity storytelling, which criticizes the world's dichotomous perception system and respects the values of various humans, becomes the foundation of endless profoundness. Film criticism and trans-identity storytelling can be connected by a shared point that aims for change in humans and the world. In the future, we hope that trans-identity storytelling, which conveys the value of humanity, will become rich and that movie criticism from the perspective of trans-identity, which leads to the transformation of the world, will become the mainstream.

The The Cultural Value of Everyday Identity in Ghanaian Popular Video Movies

Discourses on Ghanaian video movies have predominantly been described as representing everyday life. Conversely, the approach to which the everydayness of the video movies has been viewed diminishes the cultural value of the narratives. This article examines how movie narratives capture daily life experiences and how they respond to the anxieties that characterise everyday life. Using qualitative research methods, a contextual analysis of six movies was employed in analysing the narratives. Representations of daily life are embodied in marriage, religion, family, social relations and economic conditions. Anxiety is expressed over family disintegration, consumer culture intersecting with religious beliefs and the interplay between individual aspirations and social expectations in contemporary living. This study broadens the conversation on the relevance and contribution of video films to both cinema and cultural studies.

The narratives of zombie films articulate social relations in the context of an apocalyic social environment, indicating unstoppable processes of disease spreading through the omnipresence of zombies as the primary infection carriers, emphasizing discourses of biological catastrophe, that is, epidemics of infectious diseases as a potential means of the end of a modern civilization. As portrayed in movies about zombies, epidemics could be observed as a type of imagined future of the virus, that is, as an advanced stage in infectious disease evolution, which leads to the deconstruction and complete collapse of the existing social system, and then to apocalyptic consequences and the forming of a new social order. An epidemic creates conditions in which previously known institutional organization ceases to exist and shapes individual behaviors that transform social environments to meet the demands of new social and biological discourses. Due to such circumstances, social surroundings are significantly changed, and disease establishes itself as a signifier of social strategies, relationships towards the infected, and the area for the redistribution of social power and livelihood. The aim of this paper is to reveal the ways of social reorganization and social disruption caused by the zombie epidemic, emphasizing the role of the disease in reshaping social groups and relationships, with the purpose of analyzing the ways in which movie narratives metaphorize the efficiency of infectious diseases.

The Process of Self-actualization in Altair From The Anime Re:Creator by Ei Aoki

This thesis is aimed to analyses the process of self-actualization from a main antagonist character called Altair, from the anime series titled Re:Creators. Based on Abraham Maslow’s theory of Hierarchy of Needs. The data that was used in order to determine the process of self- actualization in the main antagonist Altair, were the 21 episodes in the animation series of Re:Creators. The method used in this thesis is the analytic descriptive method, and the theories to support the result of the analysis are Himawan Pratista’s Movie Narratives Structure theory and Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The result of this thesis is that the main antagonist Altair achieves her self-actualization. Unlike any other human character, due to her nature of being a “creation”, an “omnipotent” character and not a normal human being, makes the process of self- actualization quite hard to determine. However, she managed to achieved her self-actualization by gathering allies to support her cause, survived being hunted by the protagonist, and at a intense final battle that took place in Tokyo’s district of Ginza, Altair once again managed to meet her long passed creator Setsuna Shimazaki.

Interpretation of Social Interactions: Functional Imaging of Cognitive-Semiotic Categories During Naturalistic Viewing.

Social interactions arise from patterns of communicative signs, whose perception and interpretation require a multitude of cognitive functions. The semiotic framework of Peirce’s Universal Categories (UCs) laid ground for a novel cognitive-semiotic typology of social interactions. During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 16 volunteers watched a movie narrative encompassing verbal and non-verbal social interactions. Three types of non-verbal interactions were coded (“unresolved,” “non-habitual,” and “habitual”) based on a typology reflecting Peirce’s UCs. As expected, the auditory cortex responded to verbal interactions, but non-verbal interactions modulated temporal areas as well. Conceivably, when speech was lacking, ambiguous visual information (unresolved interactions) primed auditory processing in contrast to learned behavioral patterns (habitual interactions). The latter recruited a parahippocampal-occipital network supporting conceptual processing and associative memory retrieval. Requesting semiotic contextualization, non-habitual interactions activated visuo-spatial and contextual rule-learning areas such as the temporo-parietal junction and right lateral prefrontal cortex. In summary, the cognitive-semiotic typology reflected distinct sensory and association networks underlying the interpretation of observed non-verbal social interactions.

Attention to Projections: The Impact of Foreign Films on Host Country Exports

We study how foreign films impact exports. Drawing on the attention-based-view, we argue that foreign movies influence the collective attention of home country exporters by projecting narratives about foreign markets. Such narratives heighten awareness about the foreign movie’s country, even among those who have not seen the movie, thereby increasing exports. We further suggest that this relationship between movies and collective attention is positively moderated by dissimilarity in the form of linguistic, cultural, and religious distance. The greater the distance between countries, the greater is the impact of foreign movie narratives on the collective attention of local exporters and, consequently, on the exports themselves. Using data on more than 25 film producing and film audience countries, we find support for our predictions. Our ideas and findings contribute to a greater understanding of how cultural products shape international business flows, as well as the impact of collective attention on firm strategies and behaviors.
