Nanotechnology in Agriculture: Manganese Ferrite Nanoparticles as a Micronutrient Fertilizer for Wheat.

Limited research has focused on nanoparticle (NP) applications' impact on edible wheat parts in a field environment. Here, we studied the nutritional quality of edible parts of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with a field experiment by spraying MnFe2O4 nanoparticles. Wheat was foliar sprayed with 0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L composite manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) NPs during 220 d of a growth period. Ionic controls were prepared using the conventional counterparts (MnSO4·H2O and FeSO4·7H2O) to compare with the 100 mg/L MnFe2O4 NPs. After three consecutive foliar applications, nanoparticles demonstrated a substantial elevation in grain yield and harvest index, exhibiting a noteworthy increase to 5.0 ± 0.12 t/ha and 0.46 ± 0.001 in the 100 mg/L NP dose, respectively, concomitant with a 14% enhancement in the grain number per spike. Fe, Mn, and Ca content in grain increased to 77 ± 2.7 mg/kg, 119 ± 2.8 mg/kg, and 0.32 ± 7.9 g/kg in the 100 mg/L NPs, respectively. Compared to the ion treatment, the 100 mg/L NP treatments notably boosts wheat grain crude protein content (from 13 ± 0.79% to 15 ± 0.58%) and effectively lowers PA/Fe levels (from 11 ± 0.7 to 9.3 ± 0.5), thereby improving Fe bioavailability. The VSM results exhibited a slight superparamagnetic behavior, whereas the grains and stems exhibited diamagnetic behavior. The results indicate that the nanomaterial did not accumulate in the grains, suggesting its suitability as an Fe and Mn-rich fertilizer in agriculture. Above all, the foliar application of nanocomposites increased the concentrations of Fe, Mn, and Ca in wheat grains, accompanied by a significant enhancement in grain yield. Therefore, the research results indicate that the foliar application of MnFe2O4 NPs can positively regulate wheat grains' nutritional quality and yield.

Optimizing crop production in a sustainable manner depends on insights into key processes like photosynthesis, water use efficiency, and nutrient uptake. This review discusses the role of plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPMs) as biofertilizers, providing an alternative to harmful agrochemicals. PGPMs can improve soil health and promote plant growth when applied to soil, seeds, or plant surfaces, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Additionally, nanotechnology in agriculture is examined, illustrating how nanomaterials (NMs) and nano-based fertilizers can enhance nutrient absorption and increase crop yields. Beyond these scientific approaches, there is an urgent need to implement novel agricultural practices that support sustainability. The world population is growing at a disquieting rate, placing tremendous pressure on natural resources. This threatens future generations' access to nutritious food and clean air. Innovative approaches like climate-smart agriculture, organic farming, biodynamic agriculture, sustainable intensification, and regenerative agriculture, along with practices such as integrated farming systems, precision agriculture, integrated nutrient management, and integrated pest management, have proven to safeguard agricultural sustainability. By integrating these innovative approaches and practices, it is possible to meet the increasing demands for food while preserving the environment.

Advancement in Carbon Nanoparticle Synthesis and Their Application: A Comprehensive Review

The global population gradually increase at an alarming state, which would increase demand for food globally. This increasing use of pesticides and fertilizers. In order to meet this demand, an overview of the numerous applications of nanotechnology for agriculture. Various nanomaterials like nanofertilizers and pesticides enhance soil fertility and crop productivity. However, excessive chemical fertilizer use as per FAO, 2017. Among these, the nanotechnology has wide range of applications in healthcare and medicines, diagnosis etc. Recently, carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) play a significant role in various fields. Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) represent innovative nanostructures. These can be synthesized by different methods, green synthesis as well as chemical synthesis such as arch discharge method, laser ablation method, chemical vapour deposition method etc. The advancement of CNPs entails the exploration of diverse synthetic techniques and exploration of various application due to their chemical and physical properties in healthcare, agriculture (for delivery of agrochemicals) etc. These are also used in plant growth enhancement and resistance to stresses. However, challenges related to precisely defining CNP structures and ensuring property uniformity remain inadequately addressed and lack detailed study. In this review article we emphasize methodologies for the synthesis of CNPs by various chemical methods and also include their applications in therapeutics, pharmaceuticles, sensing and agriculture.

Metal-organic framework as nanocarriers for agricultural applications: a review

Agrochemicals are substances used to promote plant growth and eradicate pests; and are essential to meeting the world food demand both qualitatively and quantitatively. Unfortunately, their extensive usage has resulted in certain significant problems, i.e., soil contamination, bioaccumulation, and the development of pest resistance. Consequently, there is a need for a reduced and more regulated usage of agrochemicals. The development of sustainable nanomaterials is encouraged in agricultural nanotechnology to minimize the usage of conventional fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. Metal-organic Framework (MOF)s are porous materials made of functional organic ligands and metal nodes or clusters connected by covalent bonds. Researchers are becoming increasingly interested in using MOF in a variety of sectors. The features of engineered MOFs have the potential to be an optimal strategy for producing impressively unique results in agricultural research. They also have advantages in terms of biocompatibility and biodegradability, which can be leveraged to boost the efficiency of traditional agrochemicals administration. Controlled release of agrochemicals offers an innovative solution to decrease the nutrient uptake rates and contamination of the environment. The application of MOF nanoparticles as nanocarriers to modify the loading and release properties of agrochemicals is particularly highlighted in this review.

Carbon Nanomaterials for Plant Priming through Mechanostimulation: Emphasizing the Role of Shape.

The use of nanomaterials to improve plant immunity for sustainable agriculture is gaining increasing attention; yet, the mechanisms involved remain unclear. In contrast to metal-based counterparts, carbon-based nanomaterials do not release components. Determining how these carbon-based nanomaterials strengthen the resistance of plants to diseases is essential as well as whether shape influences this process. Our study compared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) infiltration against the phytopathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato DC3000. Compared with plants treated with GO, plants primed with SWNTs showed a 29% improvement in the pathogen resistance. Upon nanopriming, the plant displayed wound signaling with transcriptional regulation similar to that observed under brushing-induced mechanostimulation. Compared with GO, SWNTs penetrated more greatly into the leaf and improved transport, resulting in a heightened wound response; this effect resulted from the tubular structure of SWNTs, which differed from the planar form of GO. The shape effect was further demonstrated by wrapping SWNTs with bovine serum albumin, which masked the sharp edges of SWNTs and resulted in a significant decrease in the overall plant wound response. Finally, we clarified how the local wound response led to systemic immunity through increased calcium ion signaling in distant plant areas, which increased the antimicrobial efficacy. In summary, our systematic investigation established connections among carbon nanomaterial priming, mechanostimulation, and wound response, revealing recognition patterns in plant immunity. These findings promise to advance nanotechnology in sustainable agriculture by strengthening plant defenses, enhancing resilience, and reducing reliance on traditional chemicals.

With the development of nanotechnology, the usability of nanoparticles in many fields, especially in agriculture, has started to be investigated or discussed. Studies in agricultural nanotechnology have generally focused on using less pesticides, increasing yields or developing stress-resistant crops. Some studies in this field have started to yield positive results. However, more studies are needed for nanotechnology to be used in agriculture. Because deciding on the use of nanoparticles is an issue that can be reached in the long term. In recent years, the application of nanotechnology-based applications in agriculture is one of the strategies that attract the attention of researchers. Nanotechnology explores a wide spectrum of applications in the fields of biotechnology and agriculture sector, creating a broad spectrum for various applications. Nanotechnology has become a new technology that can be used in various industries such as industry, medicine, food science and safety, smart packaging and agriculture. Nanotechnology, which has been used in many stages of agriculture in recent years, has been widely applied in product production, development, processing, packaging, storage and transportation, and has brought about major changes in food and agricultural systems. It is also used to increase plant resistance and to control the efficacy and safety of pesticides and fertilizers. Thus, the application of nanostructured materials designed for sustainable crop production reduces nutrient losses, suppresses diseases and increases yields. In this study, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and targets for the use of nanotechnology and nanoparticles in wheat agriculture were identified and presented.

Silicon nanoparticles in sustainable agriculture: synthesis, absorption, and plant stress alleviation.

Silicon (Si) is a widely recognized beneficial element in plants. With the emergence of nanotechnology in agriculture, silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) demonstrate promising applicability in sustainable agriculture. Particularly, the application of SiNPs has proven to be a high-efficiency and cost-effective strategy for protecting plant against various biotic and abiotic stresses such as insect pests, pathogen diseases, metal stress, drought stress, and salt stress. To date, rapid progress has been made in unveiling the multiple functions and related mechanisms of SiNPs in promoting the sustainability of agricultural production in the recent decade, while a comprehensive summary is still lacking. Here, the review provides an up-to-date overview of the synthesis, uptake and translocation, and application of SiNPs in alleviating stresses aiming for the reasonable usage of SiNPs in nano-enabled agriculture. The major points are listed as following: (1) SiNPs can be synthesized by using physical, chemical, and biological (green synthesis) approaches, while green synthesis using agricultural wastes as raw materials is more suitable for large-scale production and recycling agriculture. (2) The uptake and translocation of SiNPs in plants differs significantly from that of Si, which is determined by plant factors and the properties of SiNPs. (3) Under stressful conditions, SiNPs can regulate plant stress acclimation at morphological, physiological, and molecular levels as growth stimulator; as well as deliver pesticides and plant growth regulating chemicals as nanocarrier, thereby enhancing plant growth and yield. (4) Several key issues deserve further investigation including effective approaches of SiNPs synthesis and modification, molecular basis of SiNPs-induced plant stress resistance, and systematic effects of SiNPs on agricultural ecosystem.

Due to the significant challenges of growing global population and climate change, the agriculture and food industries are facing a continued demand for improving productivity. The integration of nanotechnology in food and agriculture has been envisioned to supply abundant alternative avenues for the crop improvement and food security. To meet these challenges, nanotechnology has made remarkable advancements in agricultural sciences, resulting in numerous beneficial impacts on crop yield and productivity. The key areas of nano-based agriculture aim to enhance food quality, optimized fertilizer doses, reduced agricultural inputs, and improved nutrient uptake by plants from the soil. Additionally, employing minimal hazardous agrochemicals, lowering fertilizer losses, solidification of soil and water quality, and managing nutrient supply efficiently are attributed to the advantages of nanomaterials. In future, the continued efforts and convergence of agriculture and nanotechnology offers promising benefits such as equipping plants with cutting-edge nanotools to combat abiotic (drought, salt, and temperature) and biotic (insects and diseases) stresses, precise and rapid diagnostics, and maximizing utilization of available resources. The ultimate goal in agricultural sciences is to achieve sustainable food production, which forms the backdrop for harnessing the properties of nanomaterials to enhance crop productivity and address widening growing climate challenges. In summary, the extensive applications of nanotechnology in agriculture are anticipated to support climate-smart crop cultivation.

Nanotechnology in agriculture: A solution to global food insecurity in a changing climate?

Although the Green Revolution dramatically increased food production, it led to non- sustainable conventional agricultural practices, with productivity in general declining over the last few decades. Maintaining food security with a world population exceeding 9 billion in 2050, a changing climate, and declining arable land will be exceptionally challenging. In fact, nothing short of a revolution in how we grow, distribute, store, and consume food is needed. In the last ten years, the field of nanotoxicology in plant systems has largely transitioned to one of sustainable nano-enabled applications, with recent discoveries on the use of this advanced technology in agriculture showing tremendous promise. The range of applications is quite extensive, including direct application of nanoscale nutrients for improved plant health, nutrient biofortification, increased photosynthetic output, and greater rates of nitrogen fixation. Other applications include nano-facilitated delivery of both fertilizers and pesticides; nano-enabled delivery of genetic material for gene silencing against viral pathogens and insect pests; and nanoscale sensors to support precision agriculture. Recent efforts have demonstrated that nanoscale strategies increase tolerance to both abiotic and biotic stressors, offering realistic potential to generate climate resilient crops. Considering the efficiency of nanoscale materials, there is a need to make their production more economical, alongside efficient use of incumbent resources such as water and energy. The hallmark of many of these approaches involves much greater impact with far less input of material. However, demonstrations of efficacy at field scale are still insufficient in the literature, and a thorough understanding of mechanisms of action is both necessary and often not evident. Although nanotechnology holds great promise for combating global food insecurity, there are far more ways to do this poorly than safely and effectively. This review summarizes recent work in this space, calling out existing knowledge gaps and suggesting strategies to alleviate those concerns to advance the field of sustainable nano-enabled agriculture.

Nano-Food Farming: Toward Sustainable Applications of Proteins, Mushrooms, Nano-Nutrients, and Nanofibers

The relationship between agriculture and food is very close. It is impossible to produce adequate crops for global food security without proper farm management. Farming practices represent direct and indirect controlling factors in terms of global food security. Farming management practices influence agro-food production from seed germination through to the post-harvest treatments. Nano-farming utilizes nanotechnologies for agricultural food production. This review covers four key components of nano-farming: nano-mushroom production, protein-based nanoparticles, nano-nutrients, and nanofibers. This provides a comprehensive overview of the potential applications of nanotechnology in agriculture. The role of these components will be discussed in relation to the challenges faced and solutions required to achieve sustainable agricultural production. Edible mushrooms are important to food security because they are a nutritious food source and can produce nanoparticles that can be used in the production of other food sources. Protein-based nanoparticles have considerable potential in the delivery of bioactives as carriers and other applications. Nano-nutrients (mainly nano-selenium, nano-tellurium and carbon nanodots) have crucial impacts on the nutrient status of plant-based foods. Carbon nanodots and other carbon-based nanomaterials have the potential to influence agricultural crops positively. There are promising applications of nanofibers in food packaging, safety and processing. However, further research is needed to understand the impacts and potential risks of nanomaterials in the food production system.

Nanoparticle applications in agriculture: overview and response of plant-associated microorganisms.

Globally, food security has become a critical concern due to the rise in human population and the current climate change crisis. Usage of conventional agrochemicals to maximize crop yields has resulted in the degradation of fertile soil, environmental pollution as well as human and agroecosystem health risks. Nanotechnology in agriculture is a fast-emerging and new area of research explored to improve crop productivity and nutrient-use efficiency using nano-sized agrochemicals at lower doses than conventional agrochemicals. Nanoparticles in agriculture are applied as nanofertilizers and/or nanopesticides. Positive results have been observed in terms of plant growth when using nano-based agricultural amendments. However, their continuous application may have adverse effects on plant-associated rhizospheric and endospheric microorganisms which often play a crucial role in plant growth, nutrient uptake, and disease prevention. While research shows that the application of nanoparticles has the potential to improve plant growth and yield, their effect on the diversity and function of plant-associated microorganisms remains under-explored. This review provides an overview of plant-associated microorganisms and their functions. Additionally, it highlights the response of plant-associated microorganisms to nanoparticle application and provides insight into areas of research required to promote sustainable and precision agricultural practices that incorporate nanofertilizers and nanopesticides.

Microbial nanotechnology for agriculture, food, and environmental sustainability: Current status and future perspective.

The field of nanotechnology has the mysterious capacity to reform every subject it touches. Nanotechnology advancements have already altered a variety of scientific and industrial fields. Nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes ranging from 1 to 100nm (nm) are of great scientific and commercial interest. Their functions and characteristics differ significantly from those of bulk metal. Commercial quantities of NPs are synthesized using chemical or physical methods. The use of the physical and chemical approaches remained popular for many years; however, the recognition of their hazardous effects on human well-being and conditions influenced serious world perspectives for the researchers. There is a growing need in this field for simple, non-toxic, clean, and environmentally safe nanoparticle production methods to reduce environmental impact and waste and increase energy productivity. Microbial nanotechnology is relatively anew field. Using various microorganisms, a wide range of nanoparticles with well-defined chemical composition, morphology, and size have been synthesized, and their applications in a wide range of cutting-edge technological areas have been investigated. Green synthesis of the nanoparticles is cost-efficient and requires low maintenance. The present review highlights the synthesis of the nanoparticles by different microbes, their characterization, and their biotechnological potential. It further deals with the applications in biomedical, food, and textile industries as well as its role in biosensing, waste recycling, and biofuel production.

Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and Their Applications in Enhancing Plant Stress Resistance: A Review

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO nanoparticles) have gained substantial attention from researchers worldwide for their capacity to alleviate the detrimental impacts of both biotic and abiotic stress on plants, concurrently reducing dependence on environmentally harmful chemicals. This article provides an overview of methods for synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles, encompassing physical vapor deposition, ball milling, hydrothermal methods, solvothermal methods, precipitation methods, microwave methods, microbial synthesis, and plant-mediated synthesis. Additionally, it delves into the absorption, translocation, and biotransformation pathways of ZnO nanoparticles within plants. The emphasis lies in elucidating the potential of ZnO nanoparticles to safeguard plants against biotic and abiotic stress, enhance plant performance, and modulate various plant processes. The article also offers a preliminary exploration of the mechanisms underlying plant stress tolerance mediated by ZnO nanoparticles.
