Fabrication and characterization of new Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2-CPTS-HBAP (FST-CH) nanoparticles for photocatalytic degradation and adsorption removal of rhodamine B dye in the aquatic environment

In this study, Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2-CPTS-HBAP (FST-CH) nanoparticle was prepared for the simultaneous adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of aromatic chemical pollutants (Rhodamine B dye) in aqueous solution. FST-CH nanoparticle was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) Fluorescence Spectrometer and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of rhodamine B dye (RhB) was evaluated with a Kerman UV 8/18 vertical roller photoreactor. About 56% of RhB in aqueous medium was adsorbed by FST-CH nanoparticles with only 45 min of stirring in the dark, and about 77.01% was degraded or converted to other structures under the photoreactor for 120 min. The photocatalytic degradation of RhB (apparent rate constant: 0.0026 mg dm-3 min-1) occurred by a pseudo-second order reaction. In addition, the recovery of the prepared magnetic FST-CH nanoparticle by an external magnetic field, exhibiting good magnetic response and reusability, shows that the obtained magnetic FST-CH nanoparticle is stable and maintains high degradation ratio and catalyst recovery even after four cycles. Thus, the prepared FST-CH nanoparticle can be highly recommended for its use in potential applications of water decontamination.

N-doped TiO2 nano particles for photocatalytic degradation of coliform and fecal coliform from hospital wastewater effluent

<p>The photocatalytic process as an advanced oxidation process (AOP) has gained worldwide attention in the water and wastewater industry. The photocatalytic process can be used for water and wastewater disinfection. The aim of this study was to remove coliforms and faecal coliforms from real hospital wastewater using UV and UV/N doped TiO2 photocatalytic process. Secondary wastewater samples were collected from Ali-ebne Abitaleb Hospital, Zahedan. The real wastewater samples containing N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were exposed to UV light in a reactor. Multi-tube fermentation method (MPN/100ml) was used to count the coliform and faecal coliform bacteria and evaluate the process efficiency. The results showed that the mechanism of inactivation of coliforms and faecal coliforms by N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles and UV light followed the first-order equation, and the simultaneous application of N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles and UV light (N-doped TiO2/UV) increased the efficiency of the photocatalytic process and completely inactivated the coliforms and faecal coliforms in 10 minutes. The results of this study also showed that with increasing contact time, the removal efficiency of coliforms and faecal coliforms increased in the presence of UV light. The highest efficiency of the nanoparticles in bacterial inactivation was achieved at a dose of 120 mg/l in the presence of UV light and was 100%. The nano-photocatalytic process can be used as an efficient method to remove coliforms and faecal coliforms from hospital wastewater, and the N-doped TiO2/UV process is a reliable antibacterial method for water and wastewater disinfection.</p>

Sonochemical method for the preparation of magnetic nanoparticles employing green precursors and its composite with praseodymium(III) nanoparticles for photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine b

In this work, magnetically Fe3O4/SiO2/Pr nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized via a simple ultrasound route and using green capping agent such as maltose, fructose and glucose for the first time. The effect of various parameters including green capping agents (such as maltose, fructose and glucose), ultrasound irradiation time and ultrasonic power were evaluated on the size and shape of nanocomposites. The as-prepared nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra, vibration sample magnetometer, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The photocatalytic behaviors of Fe3O4/SiO2/Pr nanocomposites have been investigated through decomposition of rhodamine b dye under ultraviolet illumination (98.7% sample No.1, 79.1% sample No. 2, 86.8% sample No. 3, and 68.4% sample No. 7 of rhodamine b was degraded after 80 min). In addition, the magnetic catalyst displayed good magnetic response and recoverable after seven cycles. The results show that the prepared nanocomposite is a high stability, highly efficiency and recoverability for purification of wastewater.

The Influence of Montmorillonite Incorporation in Mn-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

The present study compares the photocatalytic decolorization ability of bare Mn-doped ZnO and montmorillonite modified Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles towards aqueous solution of organic dyes (methylene blue and malachite green) under UV light irradiation. Both photocatalysts were synthesized using co-precipitation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared absorption, electron spin resonance, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Comparison of degradation efficiency demonstrated that montmorillonite modified Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles exhibited higher activity than bare Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles.

Photocatalytic Treatment of Olive Mill Wastewater by Magnetic Core Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles

The photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds of olive mill wastewater (OMWW) was investigated by using core-shell-shell Fe3O4/SiO2/TiO2 nanoparticles as catalyst. The preparation of nanoparticles was performed by coating onto magnetic nanoparticles a SiO2 layer, using Stober method and TiO2 layer, using sol-gel method. The photo catalyst was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta-potential measurement, UV-visible spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Batch photo reactor, irradiated by an UV lamp of 45 W, was used to check the photocatalytic activity of the produced nanoparticles. The organic content of OMWW was evaluated by COD measurements. The photo degradation process was optimized by using 1.5 g/L core-shell-shell nanoparticles. The obtained results showed a high activity of synthesized nanoparticles for photocatalytic degradation of the OMWW organic compounds. Moreover, the recovery of the magnetic core photo catalyst by using a magnetic trap was proven.

Facile Growth and Characterization of TiO2 Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Degradation of 2,3-Dichlorophenol: Experimental Optimization and Comparison with Commercial TiO2

This paper reports the facile synthesis and characterizations of TiO2 nanoparticles by simple sol-gel ultrasonication followed by annealing process. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized in terms of their morphological and structural properties and utilized as efficient photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of 2,3-dichlorophenol (2,3-DCP). The as-synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles were annealed at 350 degrees C for various time intervals (3-5 h) and by morphological and photocatalytic performances, it was found that the nanoparticles annealed for 5 hrs exhibits best morphological and photocatalytic properties. To optimize the photocatalytic reaction parameters, several experiments based on catalyst dose (0.25-1.00 g/L), pH of the solution (pH = 3-11) and initial concentration (10-100 mg/L) have been performed using commercially available TiO2 (PC-105). Under optimized conditions, the photocatalytic performance of synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles and TiO2 (PC-105) was compared and it was found that the synthesized nanoparticles exhibits better photocatalytic properties as compared to the commercially available TiO2 (PC-105).
