Dispersionless Propagation of Ultrashort Spin-Wave Pulses in Ultrathin Yttrium Iron Garnet Waveguides

We study experimentally the propagation of nanosecond spin-wave pulses in microscopic waveguides made of nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet films. For these studies, we use microfocus Brillouin light-scattering spectroscopy, which provides the possibility to observe propagation of the pulses with high spatial and temporal resolution. We show that, for most spin-wave frequencies, dispersion leads to broadening of the pulse by several times at propagation distances of 10 \textmu{}m. However, for certain frequency interval, the dispersion broadening is suppressed almost completely resulting in a dispersionless pulse propagation. We show that the formation of the dispersion-free region is caused by the competing effects of the dipolar and the exchange interaction, which can be controlled by the variation of the waveguide geometry. These conclusions are supported by micromagnetic simulations and analytical calculations. Our findings provide a simple solution for the implementation of high-speed magnonic systems that require undisturbed propagation of short information-carrying spin-wave pulses.

Frequency Filtering with a Magnonic Crystal Based on Nanometer-Thick Yttrium Iron Garnet Films

Magnonics rely on the wave nature of the magnetic excitations to process information, an approach that is common to many fields such as photonics, phononics, and plasmonics. Nevertheless, magnons, the quanta of spin-wave excitations, have the unique advantage to be at frequencies that are lying between a few GHz to tens of GHz, that is, in the technologically relevant radio-frequency bands for 4G and 5G telecommunications. Furthermore, their typical wavelengths are compatible with on-chip integration. Here, we demonstrate radio-frequency signal filtering by a micron-scale magnonic crystal (MC) based on a nanopatterned 20 nm-thick film of yttrium iron garnet with a minimum feature size of 100 nm where the Bragg vector is set to be kB = 2.1 μm–1. We map the intensity and the phase of spin waves (SWs) propagating in the periodic magnetic structure using phase-resolved microfocus Brillouin light-scattering spectroscopy. Based on these maps, we obtain the SW dispersion and the attenuation characteristics. Efficient filtering is obtained with a frequency selectivity of 20 MHz at an operating frequency of 4.9 GHz. The results are analyzed by performing time- and frequency-resolved full-scale micromagnetic simulations of the MC that reproduce quantitatively the complexity of the harmonic response across the magnonic band gap and allow the identification of the relevant SW-quantized modes, thereby providing an in-depth insight into the physics of SW propagation in periodically modulated nanoscale structures.

Propagating spin waves in nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet films: Dependence on wave vector, magnetic field strength, and angle

We present a comprehensive investigation of propagating spin waves in nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films. We use broadband spin-wave spectroscopy with integrated coplanar waveguides (CPWs) and microstrip antennas on top of continuous and patterned YIG films to characterize spin waves with wave vectors up to 10 rad/$\mu$m. All films are grown by pulsed laser deposition. From spin-wave transmission spectra, parameters such as the Gilbert damping constant, spin-wave dispersion relation, group velocity, relaxation time, and decay length are derived and their dependence on magnetic bias field strength and angle is systematically gauged. For a 40-nm-thick YIG film, we obtain a damping constant of $3.5 \times 10^{-4}$ and a maximum decay length of 1.2 mm. Our experiments reveal a strong variation of spin-wave parameters with magnetic bias field and wave vector. Spin-wave properties change considerably up to a magnetic bias field of about 30 mT and above a field angle of $\theta_{H} = 20^{\circ}$, where $\theta_{H} = 0^{\circ}$ corresponds to the Damon-Eshbach configuration.

Exchange-torque-induced excitation of perpendicular standing spin waves in nanometer-thick YIG films

Spin waves in ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films with ultralow magnetic damping are relevant for magnon-based spintronics and low-power wave-like computing. The excitation frequency of spin waves in YIG is rather low in weak external magnetic fields because of its small saturation magnetization, which limits the potential of YIG films for high-frequency applications. Here, we demonstrate how exchange-coupling to a CoFeB film enables efficient excitation of high-frequency perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in nanometer-thick (80 nm and 295 nm) YIG films using uniform microwave magnetic fields. In the 295-nm-thick YIG film, we measure intense PSSW modes up to 10th order. Strong hybridization between the PSSW modes and the ferromagnetic resonance mode of CoFeB leads to characteristic anti-crossing behavior in broadband spin-wave spectra. We explain the excitation of PSSWs by exchange coupling between forced magnetization precessions in the YIG and CoFeB layers. If the amplitudes of these precessions are different, a dynamic exchange torque is generated, causing the emission of spin waves from the interface. PSSWs form when the wave vector of the spin waves matches a perpendicular confinement condition. PSSWs are not excited if exchange coupling between YIG and CoFeB is eliminated by a 10 nm Ta spacer layer. Micromagnetic simulations confirm the exchange-torque-driven mechanism.

Interface effects in nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet films studied by magneto-optical spectroscopy

The properties of nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films are strongly influenced by interfaces. This work employs spectral ellipsometry (SE) and magneto-optic polar Kerr rotation (PKR) to characterize YIG films with thickness, t, from 6 nm to 30 nm grown on Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrates oriented parallel to (111) plane. The films display a surface roughness of 0.35 nm or lower. The analysis of the SE data at the photon energies of 1 eV < E < 6.5 eV provided the t and permittivity values. The PKR at 1.3 eV < E < 4.5 eV is reasonably explained with the optical model for the YIG film/GGG substrate system. Even better agreement is achieved by assuming a 1.07-nm-thick layer sandwiched between YIG and GGG that has Fe3+ sublattice magnetization opposite to that in the YIG volume. This suggests the existence of antiferromagnetic coupling between the Gd3+ and tetrahedral Fe3+.

Thickness- and temperature-dependent magnetodynamic properties of yttrium iron garnet thin films

The magnetodynamical properties of nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet films are studied using ferromagnetic resonance as a function of temperature. The films were grown on gadolinium gallium garnet substrates by pulsed laser deposition. First, we found that the damping coefficient increases as the temperature increases for different film thicknesses. Second, we found two different dependencies of the damping on film thickness: at room temperature, the damping coefficient increases as the film thickness decreases, while at T = 8 K, we find the damping to depend only weakly on the thickness. We attribute this behavior to an enhancement of the relaxation of the magnetization by impurities or defects at the surfaces.

Optical spectroscopy of sputtered nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet films

Nanometer (nm)-thick yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12, YIG) films present interest for spintronics. This work employs spectral ellipsometry and magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) spectra to characterize nm-thick YIG films grown on single-crystal Gd3Ga5O12 substrates by magnetron sputtering. The thickness (t) of the films ranges between 10 nm and 40 nm. Independent on t, the polar MOKE hysteresis loops saturate in the field of about 1.8 kOe, consistent with the saturation magnetization in bulk YIG (4πMs ≈ 1.75 kG). The MOKE spectrum measured at photon energies between 1.3 eV and 4.5 eV on the 38-nm-thick film agrees with that measured on single-crystal YIG bulk materials. The MOKE spectrum of the 12-nm-thick film still preserves the structure of the bulk YIG but its amplitude at lower photon energies is modified due to the fact that the radiation penetration depth exceeds 20 nm. The t dependence of the MOKE amplitude is consistent with MOKE calculations. The results indicate that the films are stoichiometric, strain free, without Fe2+, and preserve bulk YIG properties down to t ≈ 10 nm.

Pseudomorphic Yttrium Iron Garnet Thin Films With Low Damping and Inhomogeneous Linewidth Broadening

Nanometer-thick yttrium iron garnet films, grown on gadolinium gallium garnet substrates by pulsed laser deposition, exhibit remarkably high crystallinity and atomically smooth surfaces. The pseudomorphic growth mechanism leads to large negative out-of-plane uniaxial anisotropy, narrow resonance linewidths, and minimal damping. Magnetic resonance measurements indicate that both the Gilbert damping parameter and inhomogeneous linewidth broadening $\Delta H_{pp,0}$ are consistently low for films of various thicknesses. Even at film thickness $\approx 20$ nm, we attain $\alpha \approx 2\times 10^{-4}$ and $\Delta H_{pp,0} \approx 1$ Oe, which are among the lowest values ever reported.
