Polyakov loop models in the large N limit: Correlation function and screening masses

We explore the ’t Hooft-Veneziano limit of the Polyakov loop models at finite baryon chemical potential. Using methods developed by us earlier we calculate the two- and N-point correlation functions of the Polyakov loops. This gives a possibility to compute the various potentials in the confinement phase and to derive the screening masses outside the confinement region. In particular, we establish the existence of complex masses and an oscillating decay of correlations in a certain range of parameters. Furthermore, it is shown that the calculation of the N-point correlation function in the confinement phase reduces to the geometric median problem. This leads to a large N analog of the Y law for the baryon potential. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Robust Measurements of n-Point Correlation Functions of Driven-Dissipative Quantum Systems on a Digital Quantum Computer.

We propose and demonstrate a unified hierarchical method to measure n-point correlation functions that can be applied to driven, dissipative, or otherwise open or nonequilibrium quantum systems. In this method, the time evolution of the system is repeatedly interrupted by interacting an ancilla qubit with the system through a controlled operation, and measuring the ancilla immediately afterward. We discuss the robustness of this method as compared to other ancilla-based interferometric techniques (such as the Hadamard test), and highlight its advantages for near-term quantum simulations of open quantum systems. We implement the method on a quantum computer in order to measure single-particle Green's functions of a driven-dissipative fermionic system. This Letter shows that dynamical correlation functions for driven-dissipative systems can be robustly measured with near-term quantum computers.

Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory for stable and causal relativistic hydrodynamics

We construct stable and causal effective field theories (EFTs) for describing statistical fluctuations in relativistic diffusion and relativistic hydrodynamics. These EFTs are fully non-linear, including couplings to background sources, and enable us to compute n-point time-ordered correlation functions including the effects of statistical fluctuations. The EFTs we construct are inspired by the Maxwell-Cattaneo model of relativistic diffusion and Müller-Israel-Stewart model of relativistic hydrodynamics respectively, and have been derived using both the Martin-Siggia-Rose and Schwinger-Keldysh formalisms. The EFTs non-linearly realise the dynamical Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) symmetry, which ensures that n-point correlation functions and interactions in the theory satisfy the appropriate fluctuation-dissipation theorems. Since these EFTs typically admit ultraviolet sectors that are not fixed by the low-energy infrared symmetries, we find that they simultaneously admit multiple realisations of the dynamical KMS symmetry. We also comment on certain obstructions to including statistical fluctuations in the recently-proposed stable and causal Bemfica-Disconzi-Noronha-Kovtun model of relativistic hydrodynamics.

Mapping Large N Slightly Broken Higher Spin (SBHS) theory correlators to free theory correlators

We develop a systematic method to constrain any n-point correlation function of spinning operators in Large N Slightly Broken Higher Spin (SBHS) theories. As an illustration of the methodology, we work out the three point functions which reproduce the previously known results. We then work out the four point functions of spinning operators. We show that the correlation functions of spinning operators in the interacting SBHS theory take a remarkably simple form and that they can be written just in terms of the free fermionic and critical bosonic theory correlators. They also interpolate nicely between the results in these two theories. When expressed in spinor-helicity variables we obtain an anyonic phase which nicely interpolates between the free fermionic and critical bosonic results which makes 3D bosonization manifest. Further, we also obtain a form for five and higher point functions as well by performing a similar analysis.

Triple-spherical Bessel function integrals with exponential and Gaussian damping: towards an analytic N-point correlation function covariance model

Spherical Bessel functions (sBFs) appear commonly in many areas of physics wherein there is both translation and rotation invariance, and often integrals over products of several arise. Thus, analytic evaluation of such integrals with different weighting functions (which appear as toy models of a given physical observable, such as the galaxy power spectrum) is useful. Here, we present a generalization of a recursion-based method for evaluating such integrals. It gives relatively simple closed-form results in terms of Legendre functions (for the exponentially damped case) and Gamma, incomplete Gamma, and hypergeometric functions (for the Gaussian-damped case). We also present a new, non-recursive method to evaluate integrals of products of sBFs with Gaussian damping in terms of incomplete Gamma functions and hypergeometric functions.

Test for Cosmological Parity Violation Using the 3D Distribution of Galaxies.

We show how the galaxy four-point correlation function can test for cosmological parity violation. The detection of cosmological parity violation would reflect previously unknown forces present at the earliest moments of the Universe. Recent developments both in rapidly evaluating galaxy N-point correlation functions and in determining the corresponding covariance matrices make the search for parity violation in the four-point correlation function possible in current and upcoming surveys such as those undertaken by Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, the Euclid satellite, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. We estimate the limits on cosmic parity violation that could be set with these data.

On Correlation Functions as Higher-Spin Invariants

(Chern–Simons) vector models exhibit an infinite-dimensional symmetry, the slightly-broken higher-spin symmetry with the unbroken higher-spin symmetry being the first approximation. In this note, we compute the n-point correlation functions of the higher-spin currents as higher-spin invariants directly on the CFT side, which complements earlier results that have a holographic perspective.

DRalgo: A package for effective field theory approach for thermal phase transitions

DRalgo is an algorithmic implementation that constructs an effective, dimensionally reduced, high-temperature field theory for generic models. The corresponding Mathematica package automatically performs the matching to next-to-leading order. This includes two-loop thermal corrections to scalar and Debye masses as well as one-loop thermal corrections to couplings. DRalgo also allows for integrating out additional heavy scalars. Along the way, the package provides leading-order beta functions for general gauge-charges and fermion-families; both in the fundamental and in the effective theory. Finally, the package computes the finite-temperature effective potential within the effective theory. The article explains the theory of the underlying algorithm while introducing the software on a pedagogical level. Correlation functions for realistic continuous quantum measurement

We propose a self-contained and accessible derivation of an exact formula for the n-point correlation functions of the signal measured when continuously observing a quantum system. The expression depends on the initial quantum state and on the Stochastic Master Equation (SME) governing the dynamics. This derivation applies to both jump and diffusive evolutions and takes into account common imperfections of realistic measurement devices. We show how these correlations can be efficiently computed numerically for commonly filtered and integrated signals available in practice.

A Universal Method for Modeling and Characterizing Non-Circular Packing Systems Based on n-Point Correlation Functions.

A universal method for modeling and characterizing non-circular particles is developed. The n-point correlation functions (n = 1, 2 and 3) are efficiently computed with a GPU parallel computing procedure. An algorithm for dynamic packing of impenetrable non-circular particles is developed based on the fast estimation of overlap information using a one-point correlation function. The packing algorithm is independent of particle shape and proved to be reliable by examples of polygons and super-ellipses. In addition, penetrable packings are generated in an efficient and precise way. Using a two-point correlation function, these non-circular packs are accurately characterized and compared in terms of features such as penetrable and impenetrable, packing fraction and particle shape. In addition, three-point correlation functions are also illustrated and discussed.

Third-Order Effective Properties for Random-Packing Systems Using Statistical Micromechanics Based on a GPU Parallel Algorithm in Fast Computing n-Point Correlation Functions.

Estimating the effective properties of a particulate system is the most direct way to understand its macroscopic performance. In this work, we accurately evaluate the third-order approximations involving the three-point microstructural parameter , which can be calculated from a triple integral involving 1-, 2-, and 3-point correlation functions. A GPU-based parallel algorithm was developed for quickly computing the n-point correlation functions, and the results agree well with analytical solutions. The effective thermal conductivity and diffusion coefficient are calculated by the third-order approximates for the random-packing systems of a super-ellipsoid. By changing the parameters of the super-ellipsoid, the particle-shape effect can be predicted for both the thermal conductivity and diffusion coefficient.

Analytic Gaussian covariance matrices for galaxy N -point correlation functions

We derive analytic covariance matrices for the $N$-Point Correlation Functions (NPCFs) of galaxies in the Gaussian limit. Our results are given for arbitrary $N$ and projected onto the isotropic basis functions of Cahn & Slepian (2020), recently shown to facilitate efficient NPCF estimation. A numerical implementation of the 4PCF covariance is compared to the sample covariance obtained from a set of lognormal simulations, Quijote dark matter halo catalogues, and MultiDark-Patchy galaxy mocks, with the latter including realistic survey geometry. The analytic formalism gives reasonable predictions for the covariances estimated from mock simulations with a periodic-box geometry. Furthermore, fitting for an effective volume and number density by maximizing a likelihood based on Kullback-Leibler divergence is shown to partially compensate for the effects of a non-uniform window function.

Efficient computation of N-point correlation functions in D dimensions

We present efficient algorithms for computing the N-point correlation functions (NPCFs) of random fields in arbitrary D-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic spaces. Such statistics appear throughout the physical sciences and provide a natural tool to describe stochastic processes. Typically, algorithms for computing the NPCF components have [Formula: see text] complexity (for a dataset containing n particles); their application is thus computationally infeasible unless N is small. By projecting the statistic onto a suitably defined angular basis, we show that the estimators can be written in a separable form, with complexity [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] if evaluated using a Fast Fourier Transform on a grid of size [Formula: see text]. Our decomposition is built upon the D-dimensional hyperspherical harmonics; these form a complete basis on the [Formula: see text] sphere and are intrinsically related to angular momentum operators. Concatenation of [Formula: see text] such harmonics gives states of definite combined angular momentum, forming a natural separable basis for the NPCF. As N and D grow, the number of basis components quickly becomes large, providing a practical limitation to this (and all other) approaches: However, the dimensionality is greatly reduced in the presence of symmetries; for example, isotropic correlation functions require only states of zero combined angular momentum. We provide a Julia package implementing our estimators and show how they can be applied to a variety of scenarios within cosmology and fluid dynamics. The efficiency of such estimators will allow higher-order correlators to become a standard tool in the analysis of random fields.

Variational methods for contracting projected entangled-pair states

The norms or expectation values of infinite projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) cannot be computed exactly, and approximation algorithms have to be applied. In the last years, many efficient algorithms have been devised -- the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) and variational uniform matrix product state (VUMPS) algorithm are the most common -- but it remains unclear whether they always lead to the same results. In this paper, we identify a subclass of PEPS for which we can reformulate the contraction as a variational problem that is algorithm independent. We use this variational feature to assess and compare the accuracy of CTMRG and VUMPS contractions. Moreover, we devise a new variational contraction scheme, which we can extend to compute general N-point correlation functions.

One-Point Statistics Matter in Extended Cosmologies

The late universe contains a wealth of information about fundamental physics and gravity, wrapped up in non-Gaussian fields. To make use of as much information as possible, it is necessary to go beyond two-point statistics. Rather than going to higher-order N-point correlation functions, we demonstrate that the probability distribution function (PDF) of spheres in the matter field (a one-point function) already contains a significant amount of this non-Gaussian information. The matter PDF dissects different density environments which are lumped together in two-point statistics, making it particularly useful for probing modifications of gravity or expansion history. Our approach in Cataneo et al. 2021 extends the success of Large Deviation Theory for predicting the matter PDF in ΛCDM in these “extended” cosmologies. A Fisher forecast demonstrates the information content in the matter PDF via constraints for a Euclid-like survey volume combining the 3D matter PDF with the 3D matter power spectrum. Adding the matter PDF halves the uncertainties on parameters in an evolving dark energy model, relative to the power spectrum alone. Additionally, the matter PDF contains enough non-linear information to substantially increase the detection significance of departures from General Relativity, with improvements up to six times the power spectrum alone. This analysis demonstrates that the matter PDF is a promising non-Gaussian statistic for extracting cosmological information, particularly for beyond ΛCDM models.

Lattice QCD Equation of State for Nonvanishing Chemical Potential by Resumming Taylor Expansions.

Taylor expansion in powers of baryon chemical potential (μ_{B}) is an oft-used method in lattice QCD to compute QCD thermodynamics for μ_{B}>0. Based only upon the few known lowest order Taylor coefficients, it is difficult to discern the range of μ_{B} where such an expansion around μ_{B}=0 can be trusted. We introduce a resummation scheme for the Taylor expansion of the QCD equation of state in μ_{B} that is based on the n-point correlation functions of the conserved current (D_{n}). The method resums the contributions of the first N correlation function D_{1},…,D_{N} to the Taylor expansion of the QCD partition function to all orders in μ_{B}. We show that the resummed partition function is an approximation to the reweighted partition function at μ_{B}≠0. We apply the proposed approach to high-statistics lattice QCD calculations using 2+1 flavors of Highly Improved Staggered Quarks with physical quark masses on 32^{3}×8 lattices and for temperatures T≈145-176 MeV. We demonstrate that, as opposed to the Taylor expansion, the resummed version not only leads to improved convergence but also reflects the zeros of the resummed partition function and severity of the sign problem, leading to its eventual breakdown. We also provide a generalization of scheme to include resummation of powers of temperature and quark masses in addition to μ_{B}, and show that the alternative expansion scheme of [S. Borsányi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 232001 (2021).PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.126.232001] is a special case of this generalized resummation.

Beyond Bogoliubov dynamics

We consider a system of N interacting bosons in the mean-field scaling regime and construct corrections to the Bogoliubov dynamics that approximate the true N-body dynamics in norm to arbitrary precision. The N-independent corrections are given in terms of the solutions of the Bogoliubov and Hartree equations and satisfy a generalized form of Wick's theorem. We determine the n-point correlation functions of the excitations around the condensate, as well as the reduced densities of the N-body system, to arbitrary accuracy, given only the knowledge of the two-point functions of a quasi-free state and the solution of the Hartree equation. In this way, the complex problem of computing all n-point correlation functions for an interacting N-body system is essentially reduced to the problem of solving the Hartree equation and the PDEs for the Bogoliubov two-point functions.

Encore: an O (Ng2) estimator for galaxy N-point correlation functions

ABSTRACT We present a new algorithm for efficiently computing the N-point correlation functions (NPCFs) of a 3D density field for arbitrary N. This can be applied both to a discrete spectroscopic galaxy survey and a continuous field. By expanding the statistics in a separable basis of isotropic functions built from spherical harmonics, the NPCFs can be estimated by counting pairs of particles in space, leading to an algorithm with complexity $\mathcal {O}(N_\mathrm{g}^2)$ for Ng particles, or $\mathcal {O}(N_\mathrm{FFT}\log N_\mathrm{FFT})$ when using a Fast Fourier Transform with NFFT grid-points. In practice, the rate-limiting step for N > 3 will often be the summation of the histogrammed spherical harmonic coefficients, particularly if the number of radial and angular bins is large. In this case, the algorithm scales linearly with Ng. The approach is implemented in the encore code, which can compute the 3PCF, 4PCF, 5PCF, and 6PCF of a BOSS-like galaxy survey in ${\sim}100$ CPU-hours, including the corrections necessary for non-uniform survey geometries. We discuss the implementation in depth, along with its GPU acceleration, and provide practical demonstration on realistic galaxy catalogues. Our approach can be straightforwardly applied to current and future data sets to unlock the potential of constraining cosmology from the higher point functions.

Mass gap in strongly coupled infinite derivative non-local Higgs: Dyson–Schwinger approach

We investigate the non-perturbative degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) in the class of non-local Higgs theories that have been proposed as an ultraviolet completion 4D quantum field theory generalizing the kinetic energy operators to an infinite series of higher derivatives inspired by string field theory and ghost-free non-local approaches to quantum gravity. At the perturbative level, the d.o.f. of non-local Higgs are the same of the local theory. We prove that, at the non-perturbative level, the physical spectrum of the strongly-coupled Higgs mass is actually corrected from the ‘infinite number of derivatives’ present in the action. The technique we use permits to derive the set of Dyson–Schwinger equations in differential form. This proves essentially useful when exact solutions to the local equations are known. We show that all the formalism of the local theory involving the Dyson–Schwinger approach extends quite naturally to the non-local case. Using these methods, the spectrum of the strongly-coupled non-local theories become accessible in the non-perturbative regimes. We calculate the N-point correlation functions and predict the mass-gap in the spectrum arising purely from the self-interaction and the non-local scale M. The proper weak perturbation limit is correctly recovered from the strong coupling regime in the limit of the coupling of the theory goes to zero. Our results show the mass gap generated in the non-local theories gets damped in the UV and it reaches conformal limit. We discuss the implications of our result in particle physics and cosmology.

Note on higher-point correlation functions of the $$T\bar T$$ or $$J\bar T$$ deformed CFTs

We investigate generic n-point correlation functions of conformal field theories (CFTs), with $$T\bar T$$ and $$J\bar T$$ deformations, in terms of the perturbative CFT approach. We systematically obtain the first order correction to the generic correlation functions of CFTs with $$T\bar T$$ or $$J\bar T$$ deformation. We compute the out of time ordered correlation function (OTOC) in the Ising model with $$T\bar T$$ or $$J\bar T$$ deformation, which confirms that these deformations do not change the integrable property up to the first order level.
