Limited effect of mycorrhizal inoculation depending on soil type and fertilization level in a central European field trial

AbstractRecent trends indicate a substantial increase in the application of mycorrhizal inoculants (Myc) across Central Europe. These inoculants are projected to contribute to a reduction in fertilizer dependency and to facilitate the mobilization of soil nutrients. Nevertheless, most studies are conducted in tropical or arid regions with very few data on wether mycorrhizal inoculants affect soil biological activity and cereal growth in temperate climates. A 4-year field trial was set up to assess the effects of Myc treatments (Funneliformis, Clariodeoglomus, Rhizophagus)on two different soil types. Myc was applied in combination with conventional fertilization in the first three years (sowing corn-wheat-corn) and substantially reduced fertilizer application in the fourth year (sowing corn). Weather conditions and fertilizer application rates had the highest impact on crop yields and shoot biomass throughout the four-year period. Mycorrhizal inoculants consistently caused significantly greater root colonization than the control each year, regardless of the fertilization rate. Myc also enhanced root capacity, phosphatase enzyme activity, and yield, but these benefits were most pronounced when combined with reduced fertilization and Luvisol with nutrient deficiency. In contrast, higher levels of soil organic matter and microbial activity in Gleysol led to a greater yield and diminished the impact of Myc compared to Luvisol. In this experiment, the Myc’s capacity to increase yield was not enough to compensate for the yield decrease caused by reduced fertilization. Our results indicate how critical soil types and fertilizer application rates are in determining the effectiveness of Myc in Central European cereal production.

The combined application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and biochar improves the Cd tolerance of Cinnamomum camphora seedlings

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity is a universal environmental threat to plant growth. Either arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) or biochar have been shown to effectively mitigate Cd toxicity in plants. Additionally, the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) has been used for phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils. However, the potential interacting effects of these treatments and their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, we conducted a mesocosm experiment to examine the effects of mycorrhizal inoculation (inoculation with sterilized AMF, with Rhizophagus intraradices and Diversispora versiformis, either alone or their mixture) and/or rice-husk biochar amendment on camphor trees grown in Cd-spiked soils (0, 15, 150 mg Cd per kg soil). We found that Cd addition significantly reduced plant biomass and increased Cd accumulation in plant tissues and soil. Single application of either AMF or biochar significantly inhibited Cd uptake by plants. Nevertheless, AMF inoculation alone improved plant biomass, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), phosphorus (P) uptake and glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) production, as well as alleviated Cd accumulation in plant shoots to a greater extent than biochar amendment; biochar performed better than AMF in reducing soil Cd mobilization under the highest Cd contamination. These results suggest that AMF and biochar adopt different strategies to reduce Cd toxicity in plants. Moreover, the combination of AMF and biochar showed the highest mycorrhizal colonization, Pn and plant biomass, as well as the lowest Cd uptake by plants under the highest Cd contamination. Particularly, the mixed fungi of R. intraradices and D. versiformis combined with biochar produced the most profound effect on plant biomass under Cd contaminations. These results suggested that the combination of AMF inoculation and biochar amendment had synergistic effects, and their combination performed better than their single application under Cd-contaminated soil. Furthermore, these additive benefits were mainly attributed to the higher total GRSP and mycorrhizal viability. This work suggests that applying mixed fungi of R. intraradices and D. versiformis together with biochar amendment may be a potential method not only for camphor production but also for the phytoremediation of soil exposed to Cd contamination.

Drought and mycorrhizal inoculation affect growth and morphology of Australian stormwater biofilter plants

This study evaluated the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation on six common Australian biofilter plant species using a pot experiment. We divided 120 pots planted with six common biofilter species into four treatments: control water-deficit, inoculated water-deficit, control well-watered, and inoculated well-watered. Inoculated treatments were inoculated with a commercially available blend of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spores. While well-watered pots were watered to pot capacity daily, water-deficit pots were subjected to a simulated drought that lasted six weeks until harvesting. All plants inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi developed greater total root surface area, plant biomass, and plant relative growth rate. Which are associated with better stormwater nutrient removal. Mycorrhizal inoculation also increased the average root diameter, total length, and surface area of thick roots (diameter > 1 mm) of six species, which are essential to maintain the infiltration rates and hydraulic functions of biofilter systems. Moreover, an increase in shoot biomass following inoculation was also observed across six species, potentially contributing to higher water loss and stormwater volume reduction. Although the water-deficit condition greatly limited the effects of mycorrhizal inoculation on other morphological traits, we still observed the benefits of inoculation on total root length and surface area in well-watered J. pallidus and C. appressa. As drought stress imposes limitations on the effects of inoculation, we recommend inoculation should be carried out in advantageous times, such as during wet periods before the drought season for the optimal colonization and plant biomass and morphological responses. Additionally, selecting mycorrhizae-responsive species like C. appressa, J. pallidus, and G. sieberiana can result in favorable outcomes.

Analysis of cultivar variability in arbuscular mycorrhizal responsiveness in soybean varieties

ABSTRACT In modern agricultural systems, high crop yields depend on the high input of orthophosphate-based fertilizers. Owing to the looming scarcity of rock phosphate in the near future, utilization of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis for the efficient uptake of phosphorus is a necessary approach to maintain crop yield. Plant responsiveness to AM fungi is assessed based on the difference in biomass between plants with and without AM fungal inoculation. Soybean is a plant which establishes both mycorrhizal and rhizobial symbiosis. Therefore, it is difficult to eliminate the symbiotic effects of rhizobial nitrogen fixation during long-term cultivation until soybean harvest. In this study, Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA110 was inoculated at the same time as soybean seeds were sown, and soybean was grown under Rhizophagus irregularis inoculated and non-inoculated conditions to verify whether the mycorrhizal inoculation effect was observed at the yield level. In 2013, two soybean cultivars Tachinagaha and Williams 82, were grown at five levels of phosphate availability (0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 kg P 10a−1) in an open greenhouse in Tsukuba, Japan. Among the several growth indices analyzed, seed weight per plant was selected as a reliable indicator of plant response. Mycorrhizal inoculation showed a positive effect on soybean under 20 kg P 10a−1 phosphorus fertilization for Williams 82, while Tachinagaha showed almost no effect. This trend was replicated in 2014 and 2016, indicating that Tachinagaha has a lower AM responsiveness than Williams 82.

Synergistic effects of vermicompost and mycorrhizal inoculation on arsenic tolerance and phytostabilization in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.).

Arsenic (As) is a hazardous metalloid, and mycorrhizal inoculation and vermicompost amendment can influence As bioremediation. However, the studies concerning the sole and joint effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and vermicompost on the phytoremediation efficacy are limited. In the present study at first, the impact of various levels of vermicompost (0, 2, 4, and 8% w/w) was investigated on As mobility in soil and safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) plants grown in soils of spiked with 0, 40, and 80 mg kg-1 As. Results revealed that with increasing dose of vermicompost, bioavailable As in soil decreased which resulted in a lower bioaccumulation factor and translocation factor (TF) and led to a significant increase of tolerance index (TI) and total chlorophyll content in plants. The highest effect on TI and total As accumulation per plant was obtained in the dosage of 8% vermicompost. Therefore, in the second experiment, the sole and joint effects of 8% vermicompost and inoculation with Rhizophagus intraradices were assessed on the tolerance and accumulation of As in safflower. The addition of vermicompost aggravated mycorrhizal colonization but did not significantly influence mycorrhizal dependency under As stress. The joint effects of AMF and vermicompost improved the dry weight of roots and shoots, increased P concentration and P:As ratio in shoots, reduced malondialdehyde content, and moderated ascorbate peroxidase activity in leaves of As-stressed plants. Interestingly, co-application of AMF and vermicompost more than their sole usage decreased As concentration in shoots and TF and more strongly increased total As accumulation per plant. These findings suggest that mycorrhizal inoculation and vermicompost have a synergistic effect on As tolerance and phytostabilization efficacy of safflower plants, and their combined application may be a new option to remediate As-contaminated soils.

Effect of Mycorrhizal Inoculation and Fertilization with Plant Residues on the Growth of Chard Plant

In order to study the effect of inoculation with mycorrhiza and fertilization with plant residues on the growth of plants, we used two factors: the first two levels of mycorrhiza inoculation, Glumus mossea (0 and 10 g.pot-1) and the second factor, four levels of plant residues (10 g.pot-1) celery plant residues, 10 g pot-1 mint residues, and 10 g pot-1 black bean seed residues. Mychorrizal treatment (10 g pot-1) increased the number of mycorrhiza spores and the infection percentage of mycorrhizal by 917.44% and 13088.23%, respectively; celery treatment (10 g.pot-1) increased the chlorophyll index in the leaves and height of the chard plant by 31.34% and 94.04%, respectively; and black seed treatment (10 g.pot-1) increased the percentage of dry matter in the leaves and the percentage of carbohydrates in the leaves by 81.51% and 53.36%, respectively.The results showed the bilateral interactions between the experimental factors that the treatment of mycorrhizal inoculation exceeded (10 g pot-1) and celery (10 g.pot-1) residues in most of the study parameters in each of the Total Chlorophyll index in the leaves (SPAD), plant height, percentage of dry matter in the leaves (%), percentage of carbohydrates in the leaves, number of mycorrhiza spores, and infection percentage of mycorrhizal were (46%, 150.89%, 139.88%, 92.07%, 3283.45%, and 4000%, respectively, compared to the control treatment.

Effect of mycorrhizal inoculation and phosphorus fertilizer on maize root infectivity in three soil series

An experiment was carried out to examine the influence of mycorrhizal inoculation and phosphorus fertilizer on maize root infectivity in three soil series at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Nigeria. The treatments included three soil series (Gambari, Itagunmodi and Iwo series), three levels of phosphorus fertilizer (0, 30 and 60 kg P2O5/ha) and three levels of mycorrhizal inoculation (0, 10 and 20 g per 15 kg soil). The experimental design used was a 3?3?3 factorial trial in a completely randomized design with three replications. Root infectivity was evaluated by the grid line intersect method. After harvesting, the phosphorus (P) uptake was determined by multiplying the P concentration in the plant by the total dry weight. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance and the significant means of the treatment were compared using the Duncan?s multiple range test at the 5% significance level. The results revealed that P uptake was influenced significantly (p < 0.05) by the soil series. The order of decrease in P uptake across the soil series was as follows: Itagunmodi (0.54 mg/kg) < Iwo (0.90 mg/kg) < Gambari (2.52 mg/kg). Root infectivity significantly enhanced the uptake of P. The highest root infectivity and the highest P uptake were achieved at 20 g inoculation. Mycorrhizal infection levels were reduced by moderate to high rates of soluble phosphorus fertilizer. Thus, increasing levels of phosphate fertilizer stimulate maize root growth but significantly reduce root infection levels.

Adoption on Cassava Technology Package to Improve the Plant Growth in Kalasan, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Production of cassava in Kalasan is still low. The problem faced is to improve cassava growth, thereby increasing cassava yields. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation, stem wounding soaked in PGPR, and spraying nano EPOFB ash fertilizer on the growth of cassava plants. The demonstration plot for planting cassava in Kalasan field was arranged in a completely randomized block design (CRBD), with single factor treatments, namely: A = stem without wounding (control), B = stem with wounding and soaked in PGPR, C = stem without wounding and inoculated with mycorrhiza, D = stem without wounding and sprayed with nano EPOFB ash fertilizer, E = stem with wounding + soaked in PGPR + inoculated with mycorrhiza + sprayed with nano EPOFB ash fertilizer. The results showed that the application of the innovative technology package (stem with wounding + soaked in PGPR + inoculated with mycorrhiza + sprayed with nano EPOFB ash fertilizer) to cassava cultivation in Kalasan had an effect on the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization, increased the dry weight of the roots, and accelerated the emergence of large numbers of shoots, thereby producing the highest number of leaves despite the shortest plant height.

The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on maize (Zea mays L.) under boron toxicity stress

A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the effect of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungus and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on maize (Zea mays L.) yield and boron (B) uptake under excessive B concentrations. Four levels of B (0, 10, 20 and 40 mg kg-1 soil) and four levels of microbial inoculation (non-inoculation, Rhizophagus intraradices, Micrococcus yunnanensis and co-inoculation) were applied. In general, elevated B decreased the maize relative yield, plant dry weight, plant height, total leaf area and chlorophyll content. The highest B uptake was recorded in the 20 mg kg-1 B treatments, whereas the lowest uptake was in B treatments of 0 and 40 mg B kg-1. Excessive B supply increased the proline content and electrolyte leakage of maize leaves. Microbial inoculation did not change the yield of B-stressed plants. In addition, mycorrhiza inoculation and co-inoculation increased the shoot and root B uptake. Maize plants growing at high B concentrations with or without microbial inoculation showed leaf edge burning and necrosis when compared with control treatments. Microbial inoculation improved the maize yield under B stress up to 20 mg B kg-1. Thus, inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhiza and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria can increase the maize tolerance under B toxicity. Nonetheless, the inoculation of bacterium and arbuscular mycorrhiza had a more alleviative effect when the plants were exposed to excess B.

Effect of vam and phosphorus on yield and quality of sunflower

The field experiment was conducted at Experimental Farm, Department of Agronomy, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu during July – October 2015 to study the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation (VAM) and different levels of phosphorus on yield and quality of hybrid sunflower cv. Sunbred.The experiment was conducted in factorial randomized block design with two replications. The treatments consisted of 5 levels of P2O5 (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100kg/ha) applied in the presence or absence of VAM inoculates. The results of experiment revealed that mycorhizal inoculated plants produced maximum seed and stalk yield, oil content, oil yield and protein content than non mycorhizal inoculation. Among the various phosphorus levels tried, P2O5 at 100 kg/ha recorded the maximum values for yield and quality. With regard to interaction effect, mycorrhizal inoculation with P2O5 @ 100 kg /harecorded maximum values for yield and quality of sunflower but it was on par with mycorrhizal inoculation with P2O5 @ 75 kg /ha. Lowest values of yield and quality were recorded in non- mycorrhizal inoculation with P2O5 @ 0 kg /ha.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis alleviates arsenic phytotoxicity in flooded Iris tectorum Maxim. dependent on arsenic exposure levels

Arsenic (As) pollution in wetlands has emerged as a serious global concern, posing potential threat to the growth of wetland plants. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can alleviate As phytotoxicity to host plants, but their ecological functions in wetland plants under flooding conditions remain largely unknown. Thus, a pot experiment was conducted using Rhizophagus irregularis and Iris tectorum Maxim. exposed to light (15 and 30 mg/kg As) and high (75 and 100 mg/kg As) levels of As, to investigate the intrinsic mechanisms underlying the effects of mycorrhizal inoculation on plant As tolerance under flooding conditions. The mycorrhizal colonization rates ranged from 31.47 ± 3.92 % to 60.69 ± 5.58 %, which were higher than the colonization rate (29.55 ± 13.60%) before flooding. AMF significantly increased biomass of I. tectorum under light As levels, together with increased phosphorus (P) and As uptake. Moreover, expression of arsenate reductase gene RiarsC and a trace of dimethylarsenic (1.87 mg/kg in shoots) were detected in mycorrhizal plants, suggesting As transformation and detoxification by AMF exposed to light levels of As. However, under high As levels, AMF inhibited As translocation from roots to shoots, and facilitated the formation of iron plaque. The immobilized As concentrations in iron plaque of mycorrhizal plants were respectively 1133.68 ± 179.17 mg/kg and 869.11 ± 248.90 mg/kg at 75 and 100 mg/kg As addition level, both significantly higher than that in non-inoculated plants. Irrespective of As exposure levels, mycorrhizal symbiosis decreased soil As bioavailability. Overall, the study provides insights into the alleviation of As phytotoxicity in natural wetland plants through mycorrhizal symbiosis, and potentially indicates function diversity of AMF under flooding conditions and As stress, supporting the subsequent phytoremediation and restoration of As-contaminated wetlands.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Alter Arsenic Translocation Characteristics of Iris tectorum Maxim.

Arsenic (As) pollution in wetlands, mainly as As(III) and As(V), has threatened wetland plant growth. It has been well documented that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can alleviate As stress in terrestrial plants. However, whether AM fungi can protect natural wetland plants from As stress remains largely unknown. Therefore, three hydroponic experiments were conducted in which Iris tectorum Maxim. (I. tectorum) plants were exposed to As(III) or As(V) stresses, to investigate the effects of mycorrhizal inoculation on As uptake, efflux, and accumulation. The results suggested that short-term kinetics of As influx in I. tectorum followed the Michaelis-Menten function. Mycorrhizal inoculation decreased the maximum uptake rate (Vmax) and Michaelis constant (Km) of plants for As(III) influx, while yielding no significant difference in As(V) influx. Generally, mycorrhizal plants released more As into environments after 72 h efflux, especially under As(V) exposure. Moreover, mycorrhizal plants exhibited potential higher As accumulation capacity, probably due to more active As reduction, which was one of the mechanisms through which AM fungi mitigate As phytotoxicity. Our study has revealed the role of aerobic microorganism AM fungi in regulating As translocation in wetland plants and supports the involvement of AM fungi in alleviating plant As stress in anaerobic wetlands.

Effect of Mycorrhizae Inoculation and Maggot Compost on Sunflower Development on Marginal Land

The use of inorganic fertilizers for a long time has an adverse impact on soil quality and the environment. For this reason, an agricultural approach that uses potential natural resources is needed. One of them is by applying agriculture in an organic concept that utilizes biological materials such as mycorrhiza and the addition of maggot compost. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation and maggot compost on the development of sunflowers on marginal land. In practice, the study used a randomized block design consisting of two factors, namely mycorrhizal inoculum and maggot compost which was repeated 3 times. The results of the study showed that mycorrhizal inoculation and maggot compost had an influence on the development of sunflowers such as the time of full bloom, ribbon flower diameter, tube flower diameter, number of seeds planted and weight of 100 seeds on marginal land. the higher the dose of mycorrhiza and maggot compost applied, the increase in each parameter observed in sunflower development on marginal land.

Mycorrhizal inoculation enhanced tillering in field grown wheat, nutritional enrichment and soil properties.

To meet food security, commercial fertilizers are available to boost wheat yield, but there are serious ill effects associated with these fertilizers. Amongst various organic alternatives, inoculating crop fields with mycorrhizal species is the most promising option. Although, mycorrhizae are known to enhance wheat yield, but how the mycorrhizae influence different yield and quality parameters of wheat, is not clear. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the influence of indigenous mycorrhizal species on the growth of wheat, its nutritional status and soil properties, in repeated set of field experiments. In total 11 species of mycorrhizae were isolated from the experimental sites with Claroideoglomus, being the most dominant one. Five different treatments were employed during the present study, keeping plot size for each replicate as 6 × 2 m. Introduction of consortia of mycorrhizae displayed a significant increase in number of tillers/plant (49.5%), dry biomass (17.4%), grain yield (21.2%) and hay weight (16.7%). However, there was non-significant effect of mycorrhizal inoculation on 1,000 grains weight. Moreover, protein contents were increased to 24.2%. Zinc, iron, phosphorus and potassium concentrations were also increased to 24%, 21%, 30.9% and 14.8%, respectively, in wheat grains. Enhancement effects were also noted on soil fertility such as soil organic carbon % age, available phosphorus and potassium were increased up to 64.7%, 35.8% and 23.9%, respectively. Herein, we concluded that mycorrhizal introduction in wheat fields significantly increased tillering in wheat and this increased tillering resulted in overall increase in wheat biomass/yield. Mycorrhizae also enhanced nutritional attributes of wheat grains as well as soil fertility. The use of mycorrhizae will help to reduce our dependance on synthetic fertilizers in sustainable agriculture.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis and melatonin synergistically suppress heat-induced leaf senescence involves in abscisic acid, gibberellin, and cytokinin-mediated pathways in perennial ryegrass

Leaf senescence is a prominent symptom of heat injury observed in cool-season plants. The application of melatonin (MT) and inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi can mitigate heat-induced leaf senescence. The current research aims to examine the individual and combined effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) inoculation and MT application on heat-related leaf senescence in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). In addition, whether the effects of these treatments were in any way associated with abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin (GA), and cytokinin (CTK) for exerting the bioactivity. According to the results, the suppression of heat-mediated leaf senescence using MT treatment and AM inoculation manifested as increased photosynthesis, turf quality (TQ), and plant growth, and reduced membrane lipid peroxidation levels as well as the chlorophyll catabolic genes (CCGs) and senescence-associated genes (LpSAG12.1 and Lph36) transcript levels in the heat-stressed plants. MT application and AM inoculation elevated the internal MT, GA, and CTK levels, while reducing the ABA levels in the heat-stressed plants. In addition, the MT biosynthesis genes (LpTDC1, LpTDC2, LpCOMT1, LpASMT1, and LpASMT3), the ABA catabolic gene, the GA biosynthesis genes, CTK biosynthesis genes, along with the associated signal transduction response transcription factors (TFs) (type-B ARRs) exhibited increased levels, whereas the expressions of the GA and CTK catabolic genes and the biosynthesis and signal transduction genes related to ABA exhibited decreased levels after MT application and AM inoculation in the heat-stressed plants. Furthermore, the application of exogenous MT notably elevated the AM colonization rate at high temperature (HT) condition. After 28 days of heat stress, compared to the treatment with neither AMF nor MT application, AM combined with MT achieved a synergistic effect, resulting in a 25.32%, 87.21%, 58.69%, 57.17%, and 28.46% increase in TQ, leaf chlorophyll content, net photosynthesis (Pn), leaf photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), and relative water content (RWC), respectively, in perennial ryegrass. Additionally, this treatment significantly reduced the electrolyte leakage (EL), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels by 30.76%, 38.19%, and 31.95%, respectively, and also significantly reduced the transcription levels of CCGs and senescence-associated genes. Consequently, it was inferred that a combination of AM and MT treatments promotes plant growth and development and suppresses heat-induced leaf senescence in plants.

Effect of Organic Mulch and Mycorrhizal Inoculation on Growth and Yield of Tomato Plants

Net greenhouse experiment was conducted through the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons at Dokki protected cultivation experimental site, Central Laboratory for Agricultural Climate (CLAC), Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation to investigate applied two factors organic mulch i.e., (bagasse, compost, palm fibers, mushroom spent, sawdust and control), mycorrhizal inoculation (with and without) and their interaction on growth and productivity of tomato plants. The seedlings of tomato cv. Super strain B was transplanted on the 15th October 2019 and 2020. The experimental design was split plot with three replicates. Results indicated that applied compost mulch treatment, without mycorrhizal inoculation and their interaction enhanced all vegetative growth characteristics i.e., (plant height, number of leaves, number of shoots, stem diameter, fresh and dry weights of plant). Whereas, applied compost mulch treatment, with mycorrhizal inoculation and their interaction improved chemical content of (N, P and K) in leaves and increased average fruit weight and total yield/m2.

Zn Fertilizer and Mycorrhizal Inoculation Effect on Bread Wheat Cultivar Grown under Water Deficit.

During drought stress, many enzymes are inactivated in plants due to Zn deficiency. Zn application and arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF)-wheat symbiosis reportedly improve the tolerance of plants to drought stress. This study was done to investigate the effect of Zn and AMF on plant growth, yield attributes, relative water content (RWC), harvest index (HI), photosynthetic activity, solute accumulation, glycine betaine (GB) accumulation, antioxidant activities [(catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)], and ionic attributes in a bread wheat cultivar (SST806) under drought-stress in plants grown under greenhouse conditions. Zn application and AMF inoculation, separately and combined, enhanced all plant growth parameters and yield. Root dry weight (RDW) was increased by 25, 30, and 46% for these three treatments, respectively, under drought conditions compared to the control treatment. Overall, Zn application, AMF inoculation, and their combination increased protein content, RWC, and harvest index (HI) under drought stress. However, AMF inoculation improved proline content more than Zn application under the same conditions. Regarding GB accumulation, AMF, Zn, and the combination of Zn and AMF increased GB under drought compared to well-watered conditions by 31.71, 10.36, and 70.70%, respectively. For the antioxidant defense, AMF inoculation and Zn application improved SOD and CAT activity by 58 and 56%, respectively. This study showed that Zn and/or AMF increased antioxidant levels and ionic attributes under abiotic stress.

Assessing the Importance of Native Mycorrhizal Fungi to Improve Tree Establishment after Wildfires.

The Chilean matorral is a heavily threatened Mediterranean-type ecosystem due to human-related activities such as anthropogenic fires. Mycorrhizal fungi may be the key microorganisms to help plants cope with environmental stress and improve the restoration of degraded ecosystems. However, the application of mycorrhizal fungi in the restoration of the Chilean matorral is limited because of insufficient local information. Consequently, we assessed the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation on the survival and photosynthesis at set intervals for two years after a fire event in four native woody plant species, namely: Peumus boldus, Quillaja saponaria, Cryptocarya alba, and Kageneckia oblonga, all dominant species of the matorral. Additionally, we assessed the enzymatic activity of three enzymes and macronutrient in the soil in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. The results showed that mycorrhizal inoculation increased survival in all studied species after a fire and increased photosynthesis in all, but not in P. boldus. Additionally, the soil associated with mycorrhizal plants had higher enzymatic activity and macronutrient levels in all species except in Q. saponaria, in which there was no significant mycorrhization effect. The results suggest that mycorrhizal fungi could increase the fitness of plants used in restoration initiatives after severe disturbances such as fires and, consequently, should be considered for restoration programs of native species in threatened Mediterranean ecosystems.
