High-risk vulnerable populations and volunteers: a model of education and service collaboration.

Extending our earlier work (Hutchison & Quartaro, 1993) describing a training program for volunteers caring for high-risk vulnerable populations, we identify and explicate factors contributing to the successful collaboration of education and service organizations. Addressing the management of linkages essential to mutual goal setting and shared responsibility for planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient/client outcomes, each factor is discussed with specific reference to improving caregiving to persons with AIDS and their families through well-trained volunteer services. The model has been applied to training for service to homeless persons and to the frail elderly and may be more broadly applicable to other high-risk vulnerable populations.

Combining Behavior Management And Mutual Goal Setting to Reduce Physical Dependency in Nursing Home Residents

The effectiveness of three nursing approaches in fostering self-care behaviors in elderly nursing home residents was compared. The study was conducted in three intermediate care nursing homes. Each home was randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a combination of behavior modification and mutual goal setting (Condition 1), mutual goal setting only (Condition 2), and routine nursing care (Condition 3). Seventy-nine subjects completed the study. In-service training was provided to nursing staff in Conditions 1 and 2 but not in Condition 3. Over a period of 22 weeks, nursing staff encouraged subjects to do parts of their morning activities of daily living (ADLs) independently. When the groups were compared on self-care behaviors at the end of the 22 weeks, subjects who received the combination treatment performed significantly more self-care behaviors than those in the other two groups.

Holistic nursing management of arthritic pain

Holistic pain management requires a thorough family and client history, physical exami nation, and mutual goal setting. Interventions must be individualized based on the goals set. Included in this article are traditional and nontraditional pain control techniques, which are useful in the management of pain.

A Successful Aging Project: Pooling University and Community Resources

1. In successful aging, the effects of aging are minimized by such extrinsic factors as nutrition, exercise, stress management, and social support. 2. Mutual and individual goal setting was encouraged at the outset of the successful aging sessions. The most frequently mentioned goals were learning more about health, staying well, feeling well, and helping others to be well. 3. A nonjudgmental attitude toward previous knowledge or lifestyle was prevalent. By tapping formal and informal community resources to deliver a program of health promotion, the project maximized cooperation within an aging services network.

King's theory of goal attainment applied in group therapy for inpatient juvenile sexual offenders, maximum security state offenders, and community parolees, using visual aids

Group psychotherapy has been considered the treatment of choice by many therapists working with offenders within the criminal justice system. However, there has been little written by nurses regarding this special population. This article's purpose is to illustrate how King's theory of goal attainment may be used in conducting group psychotherapy with offender populations. The application of King's model is demonstrated in three milieus: an inpatient setting for juvenile sexual offenders, a state maximum security prison, and a halfway house for offenders involved in a work-release program. The methodology and use of visual aids in actualizing King's theory of mutual goal setting and goal attainment are discussed.

The congruence of elderly client and nurse perceptions of the clients’ self‐care agency

Congruence of client and nurse perceptions is vital to mutual goal-setting as a means of achieving self-care in the elderly. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to explore the relationship between nurse and elderly client perceptions of the clients' self-care agency. A sample of 40 elderly client subjects and registered nurses' selected from two community health agencies, completed a questionnaire consisting of three instruments: (a) a demographic sheet; (b) the appraisal of Self-Care Agency Scale; and (c) the Perceived Health Status. Pearson product moment correlation coefficients were significant for the relationships between: (a) client and nurse perceptions of clients' self-care agency (r = 0.42, P less than 0.01); (b) client and nurse perceptions of clients' health status (r = 0.38, P less than 0.01; and (c) nurse perceptions of clients' self-care agency and nurse perceptions of clients' health status (r = 0.44, P less than 0.01). With increasing emphasis on health promotion of the elderly in the community, identified relationships may have potential implications for gerontological and community nursing practice.

Erosion of individuality in care of elderly people in hospital — an alternative approach

This paper will identify and analyse those factors which contribute to the erosion of individuality and identity for those elderly people who are admitted to hospital for care on 'elderly wards'. There is a need to focus attention on and consider the effects of the present system of care provided for the elderly while in hospital as this care can perpetuate the development of dependency and iatrogenesis among the elderly and in the process erodes their self esteem, identity and individuality. The contention of this essay will be that the proposition and usage of King's model of nursing, which advocates greater patient participation through mutual goal setting, keener awareness of the patient's perception and the establishment of an equal, reciprocal and collaborative relationship between nurse and client, can help ameliorate or prevent the development of iatrogenic problems.

How values affect the mutual goal setting process with multiproblem families.

There is an underlying assumption in much of the education of health-care professionals in this country that they, by virtue of their expertise and knowledge, know what is best for their clients. In community health nursing, this assumption leads to a behavioral process in which the nurse sets goals for clients without receiving adequate input from the clients. There is an alternative assumption that clients have the ultimate responsibility for managing their own lives. In terms of community health nursing, this assumption leads to the process of mutual goal setting. The writings of Imogene M. King are relevant to the issue of mutual goal setting. Cultural studies and multiculturalism: An experiment in classroom twinning

Abstract Students aged 9–12 in three West Hartford, Connecticut classrooms were engaged in a four‐month study about themselves, their community and the interdependence of cultures worldwide. Each classroom was twinned with a classroom in Canada (Inuit), England or Spain, and an ongoing exchange of letters, projects and reports took place. The study sought to determine (1) whether this type of contact results in a clearer and more sensitive understanding by American students of their own community, and its similarities and interdependence with another community in the world; (2) whether more sensitive or empathetic understanding, if it occurs, is transferred to other foreign people not involved in the study; and (3) whether the skills of mutual goal setting and cooperative learning were more fully developed as a result of participation in the twinning study. Teaching Strategies That Promote Adherence

Teaching strategies that promote adherence to the diabetes regimen are based on a setting of priorities that differentiates Level One (essential) knowledge from Level Two (important) and Level Three (desirable) knowledge when teaching is planned. The nursing process is used to provide for effective assessment of the learner, diagnosis of education requirements, mutual goal-setting between patient and nurse, individualized planning and instruction, and evaluation both during the process and afterward by follow-up contact with the patient.

Institutional self-evaluation: process of planning social change.

A concept of planned organizational change rests upon the premise that some organizational unit, whatever it may be, can work consciously, deliberately and collaboratively toward attaining goals of change which have been planned in advance. The purpose of such a change is to improve performance in operation of the organizational system through the application of appropriate knowledge and technology. Involved among other techniques are mutual goal setting, self-conceptualization of the institution and an organizational structure which reflects both the new goals that are set and the self-concept which the new structure must attain. The final objective of the change is to develop a new social equilibrium which achieves harmonious functioning within the system so that the various elements in that system support each other and are not working against the set goals.
