Background. Music listening is a helpful way for reduction of psychological tension state anxiety, and improvement of mood state in humans, who often experience worries, threats or anticipating stressful events. Few is known about effect of music listening on both biochemical and perceptual responses to high intensity interval training session among females practicing combat sports. The purpose of this study was to verify hypothesis that listening music during training lowers psycho-physiological stress markers. Material and methods. 16 female boxers took part in two 1-hour high intensive interval training separated 3 day apart. These sessions were of the same structures, loads, intensities. Athletes were assigned into two equal sub-groups and performed sessions with special selected dance music (MS) and without it (non-MS) Capillary blood samples were taken directly before and after training. Plasma cortisol (C), glucose (Glu) and blood lactate (LA) were determined in the samples.10-point scale was used for self-reported Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE). Results. When the training session was accompanied music, the post-session increments of C and Glu and post-session RPE were significantly lower. The impact of music on LA was not statistically significant. Conclusions. The lowered reactivity of markers of exercise stress such as C, Glu levels and RPE scores in response to training with preferred music confirmed beneficial effect of music use in female athletes performing an intensive workout. This reduction of psychological component of exercise stress may improve a training tolerance.

Music collective has a significant role in the music scene. Activities, lives, and continuity of music scene, all depends on music collective that include listeners and musician as their member. For spreading the knowledge on the music scene in the area of the music collective, raising an awareness must be done. In this paper, the authors used a music collective named Subnoise as an example, based in Bekasi, West Java. The similarity of the thoughts and tastes of the members became the initial milestone in the establishment of Subnoise. Subnoise uses awareness-raising methods such as posting on their social media like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and they also use their channels on Youtube to spread awareness of the independent scene that they shelter. Faced with the impossibility of translating “music” in a broad sense into words, this contribution shifts attention to “musics”, which can be talked about by identifying relationships with codified musical forms or meanings through two main categories: music set to poetic texts, and absolute music for which a context can be outlined through recurring passages. As an example of “verbalization of a musical discourse”, the piece Chopin from Schumann’s Carnaval op. 9 is analyzed, identifying those passages that are present in both authors, and an image of Chopin condensed by Schumann as lyrical essence.

This article provides a general overview on the theme of ‘musical aptitude’ and ‘musical aptitude test’, with a focus on the research of American music teacher and psychologist Edwin Gordon (1927-2015). After a quick look at the debate on the origins of 'musicality', and on the history of music aptitude tests and early forms of experimentation in this domain, the article goes more in-depth about the entire research of Gordon and the resulting speculations, ideas, discoveries, and investigations: the source and development of music aptitude, its nature and characteristics, audiation as 'musical thought based on a syntactic understanding of music', and music aptitude tests (MAP, AMMA, PMMA, IMMA, AUDIE). A final look at criticism and research about the tests will bring the reflection back to evaluation and education, a pair that is reganing currency today.

Besides sound, the essence of music is inherent in the materiality of the objects that graphically represent, concretely produce, and ideally describe that sound: books, instruments, paintings. The history and didactics of music, therefore, must also include these objects among its research and teaching contents, especially if these are aimed at illustrating the meaning and role of music in a specific era or environment. With a methodological support from anthropological studies on the notion of gift, on the social meaning of collecting, and on the symbolic functions of objects owned, requested or donated, this study probes into the hermeneutic effectiveness of this perspective by specifically investigating the musical collecting of the Duke of Urbino, Guidubaldo II Della Rovere. The study reveals how much the Duke's interests for musical objects have contributed to define his identity and his role in relations with foreign gentlemen of his time.

Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) is a crucial figure in the history of popular music, and in American history at large: the author of globally known songs such as, among many others, Susanna or Old Folks at Home, in 1951 a Congress resolution described him as «the father of American popular music». Despite this, for several decades his work and his own figure have been at the center of a heated debate that is leading to removal from both the musical and civil world. This contribution proposes a didactic unit aimed at providing knowledge about what is ultimately a fundamental author, filling, among other things, a substantial gap in Italian musicological literature. It is addressed primarily to Secondary Schools. However, its basic concepts can also be useful for Upper Secondary Schools and for Italian Popular music history courses at university or conservatory level.

Neuroscienze cognitive della musica by Alice Mado Proverbio offers an updated selection of studies on the delicate interweaving between musical practice and brain plasticity. The book provides evidence on how the learning and enjoyment of music can be verified by means of neuroimaging techniques, showing how it determines significant variations in sensory and motor cortical areas as well as in limbic centers, the guardians of emotions. The many topics addressed, from perfect pitch to rehabilitation in Parkinson's and mirror neurons, turn out to be useful in an educational perspective, building a valid framework of reference for any further independent investigation. As a reader and commentator on this text, I hope that readers who, like me, are fascinated with the musical synaptic forest, will be able to follow the story of science without getting lost in dead ends, and fully discover just to what degree we are made of music.

The first part of the article outlines a typology of music review and essay based on the degree of assumption required of the reader and the author's ability/will to address non-experts. The second part illustrates examples of musical teaching and essays suitable for those who cannot read music. In the third part the role of metaphor in addressing musicological subjects is explained, and some linguistic and stylistic features (aulicisms) peculiar to writing on music are exemplified.
