Ultrasonography of Pregnancy in Murciano-Granadina Goat Breed: Fetal Growth Indices and Umbilical Artery Doppler Parameters

The evolution of some fetal growth indices and arterial blood flow parameters in the umbilical cord of the embryos and fetuses of primiparous pregnant goats of Murciano-Granadina breed were analyzed by ultrasonography. Weekly ultrasonographic sessions took place from 18- to 125-days post-breeding. Fetal measures were carried out by ultrasound B-mode. This mode was used to take a series of measurements in the embryo/fetus throughout pregnancy: crown-rump length (CRL, from 24-days post-mating -dpm- to 61 dpm), trunk diameter (TD, 24-34 dpm), biparietal diameter (BPD, 28-125 dpm) and eye orbit diameter (EOD, 75-125 dpm). Spectral Doppler was used to study blood flow from umbilical artery. Different blood flow parameters were obtained as follows: Arterial Pulse, Peak Systolic Velocity (PSV), End Diastolic Velocity (EDV), Mean Velocity (MV), Systolic velocity/Diastolic velocity Ratio (S/D), Pulsatility Index (PI) and Resistance Index (RI). In this study, the umbilical cord was first noticed between 32- and 35-days post-breeding. However, these umbilical arterial blood flow parameters were not conclusive (positive S/D ratios and RI < 1) until 65-80 days of pregnancy. The explanation to these results could be that vascular development related to umbilical arteries elasticity and diameter is not good enough in early pregnancy. Therefore, these vessels have already acquired their appropriate characteristics in order to allow blood flow parameters and Doppler index measures from only 2.5 months of pregnancy. This is the first time that a detailed study of fetal growth indices and umbilical artery flow rates in fetuses from Murciano-Granadina goats has been performed throughout virtually the entire duration of gestation. In conclusion, the evolution of the fetal growth indices in this breed has determined that the umbilical artery velocimetric parameters (PSV, EDV, MV) increase significantly and the AP, S/D, PI and RI indices decrease significantly throughout the analyzed pregnancy period.

Pointing Out Some Issues Regarding Reproduction Management in Murciano-Granadina Goats.

The maximum progesterone concentration in milk varied depending on the season of the year, and those concentrations were similar for pregnant and non-pregnant goats, but significantly higher in the case of gestating goats with four foetuses, for which it would be possible to distinguish the pregnancy. The milk yield of goats at mating does not affect fertility until a value of at least 3250 mL/day. If using lactation inhibitors, their application up to the 10th week post-mating would be optimal for drying off lactating goats.Two of the most important problems in high-yielding dairy goat farms are early and accurate pregnancy diagnosis and the appropriate dry off of lactating does before the next kidding. The hypothesis posits that it could be possible to identify pregnant does through maximum progesterone milk levels at any time during the pregnancy, and that there is an optimal time to apply a lactation inhibitor to help dry off lactating does. Therefore, 114 Murciano-Granadina breed goats were used, from which 74 goats were inseminated at week 20 of lactation and samples of milk from pregnant and non-pregnant goats were taken at two-week intervals. The average maximum progesterone milk levels were higher outside the natural breeding season (40° latitude) than in the breeding season (11.6 ± 1.13 vs. 8.6 ± 1.02 ng/mL), although the levels from pregnant and non-pregnant goats were similar (10.85 ± 1.3 vs. 9.74 ± 1.6 ng/mL), except in the case of pregnancy with four foetuses (12.5 ± 1.3 ng/mL). Milk yield at mating does not affect fertility until a value of at least 3250 mL/day. Pregnancy started to affect milk yield up to the +7th week and was 59.9% lower in the +10th week after mating, so the use of lactation inhibitors could be more effective from this latter week. In conclusion, the results show that it is not possible to detect gestation in goats reliably through the maximum concentration of progesterone in milk at any time during lactation, except in the case of goats gestating four foetuses, that the milk yield of goats at mating does not affect fertility until a value of at least 3250 mL/day, and that from the 10th week post-mating, the application of lactation inhibitors would be optimal.

Machine milking parameters for Murciano-Granadina breed goats

In dairy ruminants, the combination of milking parameters must ensure good milking performance without harming udder conditions. Commonly, milking conditions for goats are established without having checked the admissible limits for optimal and fast milking. The aim of this study was to establish a limit combination of machine milking parameters that improves machine milking performance without altering milkability or udder status. To this end, we studied the effect of 2 combinations (42 kPa, 120 cpm, 60% vs. 44 kPa, 120 cpm, 60% in terms of kilopascals of vacuum level, cycles per minute of pulsator rate, and percentage of pulsator ratio, respectively) on milk production and composition, milk fractioning during milking, SCC, teat tissue thickness variation after milking, and the milk emission kinetics parameters throughout 1 lactation period (6 mo). The 42 and 44 kPa measured at the vacuum gauge level became average values of 37.5 and 39.3 kPa, respectively, measured at the teat sphincter level during milking. Milk flow significantly increased and total milking time decreased 25 s with the elevation of the vacuum level from 42 to 44 kPa without any adverse effect on milk fractioning at milking. However, the use of 44 kPa also showed an increase in tissue thickness above 5%, and we observed a tendency of average conductivity of milk to increase, although without any adverse effect on SCC. It seems that 44 kPa, 120 cpm, 60% is a possible limit combination of parameters to improve milking performance without altering milkability or udder conditions. We concluded that this combination can be used for milking Murciano-Granadina breed goats in conditions similar to those of this study (mid-level milking system and 1 milking/d), although further studies are necessary to verify its application in the case of 2 milkings/d.

Effect of the rearing system on financial returns from Murciano-Granadina breed goats

In dairy goats, the kid rearing system can have critical importance in financial returns. Commonly used criteria for the choice of rearing system are not always clear due to the high number of factors involved. The aim of this study was to quantify all those factors to facilitate decision making. So, the effect of two different kid rearing systems, mixed rearing system (MRS) and artificial rearing system (ARS), on milk yield, milk composition and somatic cell count (SCC), milk yield loss at weaning for MRS, kid growth and costs of the different traits on the financial returns in Murciano-Granadina breed goats was studied. Twenty-four goats per group were used. In the MRS, goats reared only one kid, which had free access to goat milk 24 h a day and were weaned at week 6 of lactation, whereas kids in the ARS were separated from their mothers at kidding, colostrum and artificially reared. In both systems, dams were machine-milked once a day throughout lactation and the records took place weekly. Potential milk yield was estimated according to the oxytocin method up to week 12 of lactation, and was similar for both rearing systems, although a 12.3% drop in potential milk yield at weaning was observed for MRS. During the first 6 weeks of lactation, marketable milk was lower for dams in MRS compared to those in ARS (72.1 v. 113.0 l), but similar for the rest of the experiment (101.5 v. 99.4 l, respectively). Marketable milk composition and SCC throughout the 12 weeks of lactation were unaffected by the rearing system. Artificial rearing system entailed an increment in production cost of 22.2€ per kid compared to the rearing by MRS. A similar economic return per goat and kid was obtained from ARS and MRS in this experiment, although, due to one herd’s prolificacy of 1.8, the actual results would be 16.2€ per goat in favour of MRS. The real interest of this experiment may be the possibility of extrapolation to different flocks with diverse levels of milk production, prolificacy and prices and costs for incomes and outputs, to estimate the production system that increases returns. In conclusion, the results showed an increase in the cost of €22.2 per kid bred in the ARS, compared to the MRS, and a final return of 16.2€ per goat in favour of the mixed system.

Factors affecting milking speed in Murciano-Granadina breed goats.

Milk flow during the first minute of milking was analyzed using data from 1,132 Murciano-Granadina breed goats belonging to 17 herds. During the individual lactations, 2 test days were scheduled for recording several milk flow traits, total milk, milk composition (fat and protein percentages), and somatic cell count. Average lag time from teatcup attachment to arrival of milk at the milk claw (T0) was 4.9 s and at the milk meter (T1) was 15.8 s. Average milk flow after 30 s (MF0.5) was 0.29kg/30 s (0 to 1.1kg/30 s) and milk flow at 60 s or milking speed (MF1) was 0.67kg/min (0.1 to 2.1kg/min). Repeatabilities of T0, T1, MF0.5, and MF1 were 0.45, 0.58, 0.62, and 0.68, respectively. The MF1 showed high phenotypic correlation withT1(-0.63) and MF0.5 (0.90), medium values withT0(-0.42) and total milk (0.22), and very low values (-0.04 to -0.12) with fat, protein, and somatic cell count. We found no differences between flows during the first 3 lactations, with a reduction as the lactation number increased. Months in milk since parturition affected MF1, being highest in the first 3mo (0.67-0.71kg/min) and decreasing until the end of lactation (0.58kg/min). The effect of herd-test day was significant for all traits. Inclusion of all these effects for the analysis of milk flow traits is considered necessary.

Milkability and milking efficiency improvement in Murciano-Granadina breed goats

The aim of this study was to verify the effect of cluster, udder characteristics and milking parameters on milkability and milking efficiency of Murciano-Granadina breed goats, in order to improve them. The cluster used is well adapted to the goats, except that the teat-floor distance is too short for the teat-cup used and the cluster rests on the platform instead of hanging from the udder, something apparently attributed to a poor udder conformation rather than an excessively long teat-cup. Udder parameters studied are classified as medium or medium-high by the Murciano-Granadina breed association, and do not seem to represent a problem for good milkability except for the teat sphincter strength, which reduced milk flows (P<0.001) and increased milking times (P<0.001). Maintaining 60% as pulsator ratio, a combination 42kPa:120ppm (vacuum level:pulsator rate) milking parameters reduced total milking time by 22s per goat compared to 40kPa:90ppm, commonly used in this flock, but increased teat thickness measured before and after milking. Studies of longer duration are needed to ensure that the new milking parameters do not affect the udder health status.

Effect of estrus synchronization on daily somatic cell count variation in goats according to lactation number and udder health status

Two repeated experiments were carried out in 2 different years to study the effect of estrus on somatic cell count (SCC) in dairy goats. In the first year, 36 Murciano-Granadina goats were used [12 primiparous and 24 multiparous; 22 healthy and 14 with an intramammary infection (IMI)] and, after a 6-d pre-experimental period, were divided into 2 groups according to lactation number, udder health status, SCC, and milk production. One group was kept as a control, whereas the other received an estrus synchronization hormonal treatment lasting 11d. At 24, 48, and 72h after cessation of the hormone treatment, goats were placed in contact with a buck to confirm that they were in estrus. For 32 consecutive days (6 pre-experimental, 11 in hormone treatment, and 15 post-treatment) the SCC per gland and udder were monitored in all animals. In the second year, we repeated the same experimental design using a total of 38 Murciano-Granadina breed goats (12 primiparous and 26 multiparous; 26 healthy and 12 with IMI). Throughout this experiment, milk yield and composition were also recorded daily for each goat. Upon termination of the hormonal treatment, the SCC in udder milk increased significantly in the treatment group compared with the control group over 3 consecutive days. This increase was observed for year (1 and 2), parity (primiparous and multiparous), and udder health status (healthy and IMI). The log10 SCC (cells/mL) increased from 5.5±0.09 before estrus to 6.04±0.09 during treatment; therefore, the geometric mean of the SCC increased 3.5 times during treatment. The maximum values obtained in healthy glands of primiparous goats (geometric mean=0.37 million cells/mL) were lower than in healthy glands (1.1 million cells/mL) or infected glands (1.7 million cells/mL) of multiparous goats. The increase in SCC observed during estrus (200% increase in geometric means) could not be explained by the changes in milk production, which only fell by 13%. During estrus, the percentage of protein and dry matter in the milk also increased significantly. We concluded that it is necessary to consider the presence of estrus to correctly interpret milk SCC, as an indirect method for detecting IMI or as a commercial milk quality parameter.

Variability in the behavior of kids born of primiparous goats during the first hour after parturition: Effect of the type of parturition, sex, duration of birth, and maternal behavior

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the type of birth, the sex of the kids, the duration of the birth (categorized as short, medium, or long), and the level of maternal care (categorized as low, medium, or high) on the behavioral variables of kids during the first hour after birth. The parturitions of 78 primiparous goats of Murciano-Granadina breed (46 single-birth and 32 twin-birth) along with the behavior of the kids (44 males and 66 females) during the first hour of life were studied. Birth weight and duration of parturition were greater in single-birth kids (2.94 kg and 60.5 min, respectively) than in twin-birth kids (2.27 kg and 43.2 min, respectively). Birth weight and duration of parturition was greater in males (2.74 kg and 54.61 min) than in females (2.43 kg and 47.70 min). All the kids attempted to stand during the first hour of life, but only 83% attempted to suckle with 65% succeeding. Single-birth kids attempted to stand earlier than twin-birth kids (7.05 vs. 9.08 min), although they achieved this later (16.87 vs. 13.21 min). Compared with twin-birth kids, single-birth kids attempted to suckle later (22.45 vs. 34.76 min, respectively) and achieved it later (25.69 vs. 37.32 min). In the single-birth kids the duration of the first suckling was shorter (16.11 vs. 22.26 s), although total suckling time was greater (5.86 min) than in the twin-birth kids. Males tried to stand sooner than females (7.41 vs. 8.78 min), but took longer (16.12 vs. 13.81 min). The sex factor had no significant effect on suckling-related variables. Compared with medium- and long-duration-birth kids, short-duration-birth kids attempted to suckle earlier, (29.34, 34.23, and 12.82 min, respectively), achieved suckling earlier (31.75, 37.00, and 16.70 min, respectively), and suckled longer at first attempt (0.32, 0.17, and 0.45 min, respectively). Total suckling time was longer in long-duration-birth kids than in medium- and short-duration birth (9.07, 2.63, and 3.86 min, respectively). These results suggest that heavier kids suffer more during birth and are slower to achieve suckling; however, they appear to recover quickly because the total suckling time observed during the first hour was greater.

Influence of forced contact on the maternal-filial bond in the domestic goat after different periods of post-partum separation

Twenty multiparous does of Murciano-Granadina breed were separated from their offspring immediately after birth, there being no contact whatsoever between mother and kid (ten goats remained separated from their kids for 30 min and the remaining ten for 1 h). After this period mothers and kids were reunited in a 8m × 4m barn, where three tests were done to determine the maternal behaviour of the mother. Mothers and kids were forced to remain together in a fenced plot of 1.5 m × 1.5 m for 24h. After this, the same three tests were repeated. Results obtained showed that all mothers that had been separated for 30 min showed a certain degree of maternality in the tests done before the forced contact. These same goats increased their maternality after the forced reunion (Test 1: χ 2 = 14.0, P < 0.001; Test 3: χ 2 = 16.4, P < 0.001). In contrast, those goats that had been separated from their offspring for 1 h lost their maternality. Nevertheless, after 24 h of forced reunion 50% of the goats observed recovered their lost maternality (Test 1, Test 2 and Test 3: χ 2 = 6.7, P < 0.05). In a second experiment, 30 multiparous goats of Murciano-Granadina breed were separated from their offspring after having remained together for 5 min after birth (ten goats remained separated for 1 h, another ten goats for 8 h and the remaining ten for 24h). Once the separation period was over, each goat, together with its kid, was placed in an 8 m × 4m barn where three tests were done to determine maternality. Mothers and kids were forced to stay together for 24h in a 1.5m × 1.5m barn. The same three tests were repeated after this 24h forced reunion. Results indicated that those mothers separated for 1 h and 8 h behaved maternally towards their offspring after these separation periods. These same goats increased their maternality after the 24h forced reunion (Test 1 and Test 3: χ 2 = 12.5, P < 0.01). Nevertheless, not all of the goats that were separated from their offspring for 24 h behaved maternally after the separation or after the forced reunion period.

Effects of immediate and early post-partum separation on maintenance of maternal responsiveness in parturient multiparous goats

The subject of study consisted of the determination of the effects of separation, either immediate or after brief mother-young post-partum contact, on the maintenance of the maternal response in multiparous goats of Murciano-Granadina breed, having eliminated every visual, olfactory, auditory, or taste stimulus that could be used as a reminder by the mother. Fifty goats and their 82 kids were used in the study. The goats were kept away from their kids for 1 2 or 1 h when the separation took place immediately after birth, and for 1, 8, or 24 h when it took place after a brief 5-min post-partum contact between mother and young. At the end of the separation both were put together in a stall. The half-hour following the reunion was recorded on video tape. The results have shown that, as for an immediate post-partum separation, the maternal response is maintained ( 10 10 ) after a separation of 1 2 h . However, the response is null ( 0 10 ) after 1-h separations. After a brief mother-young post-partum contact, the results show that there is maternal response after separations of 1 and 8 h ( 10 10 ). On the other hand, a separation of 24 h brings about the extinction of that maternal response ( 10 10 ) and breaks any mother-young ties that may have been established during that brief period of initial contact.
