Carrier frequency synchronization for WLAN systems based on MIMO-OFDM-IM

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation (IM) MIMO-OFDM-IM is a modulation technique that has garnered significant interest in recent times owing to its attraction of smooth transition to greener communications, enhancing efficiency in terms of energy, spectrum and compatibility to previous existing standards without the need for drastic changes in the physical layer. It is also proved that even though OFDM-IM provides better immunity to carrier frequency offset compared to traditional OFDM, the sensitivity to frequency error is still a major issue and it has to be resolved on priority basis to fully exploit the potential offered by the IM technique. In this work, we propose a novel non-data-aided algorithm that efficiently estimates and eliminates the offset present in the received signal. The algorithm has been analyzed for the MIMO-OFDM-IMbased wireless local area network system using the high throughput task group (TGn) MIMO channel models in the presence of AWGN. In addition, it is compared with the other popular blind algorithms based on both pilots and inactive data tones. The simulation plots depict a clear improvement of the new estimator over the existing methods not only in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions but also in the high SNR region.

High-Speed Rail Multiple-Input–Multiple-Output Channel Model Based on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface System

This paper presents a geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) system tailored to high-speed rail environments, addressing energy leakage at space lattice points caused by the time-dependent reception direction and differing antenna array resolutions. Initially, this study explores the spatial domain feature map and spreading antenna lobe characteristics from various RIS array configurations to reshape the polarization distribution and facilitate a virtual antenna array. Subsequently, the time-dependent reception direction and position are derived by integrating the dynamics of train operations. Finally, the received signal is aligned with the polarization direction to assess the signal reception efficiency and finalize the model output. Research findings indicate that the number of RIS elements, spacing between RIS elements, and mobile relay (MR) movement characteristics significantly influence the performance of the system. Compared to existing models, the proposed model proficiently captures the effects of time-dependent receiver angle properties and RIS array configuration.

Hybrid mmWave MIMO Systems Under Hardware Impairments and Beam Squint: Channel Model and Dictionary Learning-Aided Configuration

Low overhead channel estimation based on compressive sensing (CS) has been widely investigated for hybrid wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The channel sparsifying dictionaries used in prior work are built from ideal array response vectors evaluated on discrete angles of arrival/departure. In addition, these dictionaries are assumed to be the same for all subcarriers, without considering the impacts of hardware impairments and beam squint. In this manuscript, we derive a general channel and signal model that explicitly incorporates the impacts of hardware impairments, practical pulse shaping functions, and beam squint, overcoming the limitations of mmWave MIMO channel and signal models commonly used in previous work. Then, we propose a dictionary learning (DL) algorithm to obtain the sparsifying dictionaries embedding hardware impairments, by considering the effect of beam squint without introducing it into the learning process. We also design a novel CS channel estimation algorithm under beam squint and hardware impairments, where the channel structures at different subcarriers are exploited to enable channel parameter estimation with low complexity and high accuracy. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DL and channel estimation strategy when applied to realistic mmWave channels.

UTD-Based Ray-Tracing MIMO Channel Modeling for the Next-Generation Communications Within Underground Tunnels

Limited work has previously been conducted into deterministic modeling of the 5 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">th</sup> Generation (5G) millimeter (mm)-wave wireless communications within geometrically non-uniform tunnels. This study predicts and analyzes broadband Multiple–Input Multiple–Output (MIMO) propagation in underground mine tunnels for 5G communications and beyond. At extremely short wavelength, each rugged and uneven surface of the tunnel is modelled as a group of diffracting rectangular prism wedges. A deterministic Ray-Tracing (RT) MIMO model is developed based on the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD). All predicted MIMO sub-channels have been successfully fitted with the experimental measurements. MIMO multipath fading of underground tunnels are found to be lognormally distributed and strongly depends on the tunnel’s size and shape.

In-band full-duplex MIMO PLC systems for relaying networks

In Power Line Communications (PLC), there are regulatory masks that restrict the transmit power spectral density for electromagnetic compatibility reasons, which creates coverage issues despite the not too long distances. Hence, PLC networks often employ repeaters/relays, especially in smart grid neighborhood area networks. Even in broadband indoor PLC systems that offer a notable data rate, relaying may pave the way to new applications like being the backbone for wireless technologies in a cost-effective manner to support the Internet-of-things paradigm. In this paper, we study Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) PLC systems that incorporate in-band full-duplex functionality in relaying networks. We present several MIMO configurations that allow end-to-end half-duplex or full-duplex operations and analyze the achievable performance with state-of-the-art PLC systems. To reach this analysis, we get channel realizations from random network layouts for indoor and outdoor scenarios. We adopt realistic MIMO channel and noise models and consider transmission techniques according to PLC standards. The concepts discussed in this work can be useful in the design of future PLC relay-aided networks for different applications that look for a coverage extension and/or throughput: smart grids with enhanced communications in outdoor scenarios, and “last meter” systems for high-speed connections everywhere in indoor ones.

Hybrid Transceiver Design for Tera-Hertz MIMO Systems Relying on Bayesian Learning Aided Sparse Channel Estimation

Hybrid transceiver design in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Tera-Hertz (THz) systems relying on sparse channel state information (CSI) estimation techniques is conceived. To begin with, a practical MIMO channel model is developed for the THz band that incorporates its molecular absorption and reflection losses, as well as its non-line-of-sight (NLoS) rays associated with its diffused components. Subsequently, a novel CSI estimation model is derived by exploiting the angular-sparsity of the THz MIMO channel. This is followed by designing a sophisticated Bayesian learning (BL)-based approach for efficient estimation of the sparse THz MIMO channel. The Bayesian Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (BCRLB) is also determined for benchmarking the performance of the CSI estimation techniques developed. Finally, an optimal hybrid transmit precoder and receiver combiner pair is designed, which directly relies on the beamspace domain CSI estimates and only requires limited feedback. Finally, simulation results are provided for quantifying the improved mean square error (MSE), spectral-efficiency (SE) and bit-error rate (BER) performance for transmission on practical THz MIMO channel obtained from the HIgh resolution TRANsmission (HITRAN)-database.

Geometry-Based UAV MIMO Channel Modeling and Pattern Optimization for Multimode Antennas

Improving safety is of general interest in aviation. Flight transponders used in collision avoidance systems advise pilots with information of potential collisions and avoidance resolutions. Some transponders are capable of transmitting the instantaneous position of the vehicle which might be turned off. To prevent autonomous flights from collisions, the transponder signals shall be used to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DoA). Recently, multimode antennas have been investigated for communication and localization purposes. Multimode antennas provide several orthogonal ports on a single radiator surface. This leads to a reduction of space and weight, which is of interest in airborne applications. To perform DoA estimation as well as communication, a suitable channel model is required. In this contribution, a channel model fulfilling the requirements for both multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication and DoA estimation is proposed. This channel model relies on the manifold matrix representation of the UAV under consideration. The derived description of a manifold matrix for the UAV use-case is used for an optimization to achieve a close to omnidirectional radiation pattern. Therefore, different optimization functions are derived and their performance is compared. The results of the optimization using the calculated manifold matrix are verified by measurements taken in an antenna measurement chamber.

MIMO Systems in SmallSat Swarms: System Characterization With the Introduction of a Channel Model

This work introduces a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model to characterize propagation in a small satellite swarm environment. By using the Rician <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$K$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -factor, this model appropriately combines fixed line-of-sight (LoS), satellite-reflected, and earth-reflected (ER) channel components with a randomly varying diffuse component that accounts for satellite, earth, and atmospheric scattering. The proposed model is compared to ray tracing and used to elucidate the performance of (4, 4), (8, 8), and (16, 16) point-to-point MIMO systems. Indicatively, assuming 15 dBm of transmit power, a keep-out radius of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$R_{KO} \geq 50$ </tex-math></inline-formula> m, and a 24 satellite swarm, (16, 16) MIMO systems achieve approximately 4–5 times the capacity of a (2, 2) polarization diversity-based system, a significant improvement for a swarm that operates as a fractionated system and autonomously makes decisions. It is also shown that a (16, 1) single-input multiple-output system has 130 times the range of a (2, 1) system, increasing proportionally the lifetime of the swarm as satellites drift apart. With an example power budget, we show that a 3U CubeSat with an orbit average power (OAP) of 12.9 W can support 16 MIMO antennas. This MIMO channel model is the first step in developing optimized communication systems for SmallSat swarms.

Channel Model and Performance Analysis for MIMO Systems with Single Leaky Coaxial Cable in Tunnel Scenarios.

Due to the limited space in the tunnel environment, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with double-port fed leaky coaxial cables (LCXs) can not only reduce the number of LCXs, but also improve the channel capacity. Based on the geometry based on single bonce (GBSB) and electromagnetic field radiation theory of LCX, a MIMO channel model with double–port fed LCX in a tunnel scenario is proposed in this paper. The channel impulse response (CIR) is derived, and verified with measurement results in terms of channel capacity. The distribution of channel capacity of single double-port fed LCX under different LCX lengths in the tunnel scenarios has also been analyzed in this work, and the distribution of channel capacity for the LCX–MIMO system with long LCX is predicted. The results show that the single double-port fed LCX–MIMO system outperforms the dipole antenna MIMO system with respect to channel capacity in the considered tunnel scenarios.

Asymptotic MIMO Channel Model for Diffusive MC With Fully-Absorbing Receivers

This letter introduces an analytical model that gives the expected asymptotic cumulative number of molecules absorbed by each spherical receiver in a diffusive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) molecular communication (MC) system with pointwise transmitters. The reciprocal effect among the fully absorbing (FA) receivers is taken into account by using the recently introduced concept of fictitious pointwise negative source of molecules. An agreement is shown between the proposed asymptotic model and the numerical solution of the exact analytical one from the literature describing the interaction among the receivers, which is computed for a sufficient long time.

Statistical Characteristics of 3D MIMO Channel Model for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications

Spatial and temporal characteristics of the propagation channel have a significant influence on multiantenna method applicability for fifth-generation- (5G-) enabled Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, the statistical characteristics of a novel three-dimensional (3D) geometric-based stochastic model for next-generation vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications under the nonisotropic scattering environment are investigated. In both line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) conditions, the proposed model investigates the spatial, frequency, and temporal domain statistical distribution of multipath received signals by using the time-variant transfer function for indoor environments. The probability density function (PDF) of separation distance between the transceiver antennas, angle-of-arrival (AoA), and angle-of-departure (AoD) in the azimuth and elevation planes is derived by using closed-form expressions. For the space, time, and frequency correlation function (STF-CF), a precise analytical expression is derived based on MIMO antenna system. We further determine the effects of several model parameters on the V2V channel performance, such as tunnel width, antenna array spacing, Ricean K -factor, and moving velocity. The statistical characteristics of the MIMO channel model are validated by simulation results, confirming the flexibility and effectiveness of our proposed model in the tunnel scenario.

Cooperative Spectrum Sensing under SISO and MIMO Environment for Cognitive Radio Networks

Background: Increasing demand for wireless devices leads to the efficient use of spectrum resources. Despite the limited availability of spectrum resources, all licensed users do not utilize their spectrum all the time. Objective: Cognitive Radio (CR) is used to detect free channels in the available spectrum resources and access them dynamically without interfering with licensed users. Various spectrum sensing (SS) techniques are available to sense the spectrum of licensed users. Methods: The spectrum sensing technique, energy detector (ED), is analysed under a Rayleigh fading channel. Further, Single Input Single Output (SISO) and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) channel models are developed in the consumer environment. The ED technique is further analysed with cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) to overcome detection problems for a single CR user. Results: The ED achieves a probability of detection (PD) of 0.9 and a probability of false alarm (PFA) of 0.1 at the lowest SNR of −20 dB, which is the requirement for a standard IEEE 802.22 Wireless Regional Area Network (WRAN). Conclusion: Various receiver operating characteristics are determined by conducting practical simulations and theoretical calculations for each SISO and MIMO channel model with and without the CSS scenario to achieve the target PD and PFA .

A Novel 3D Non-Stationary Maritime Wireless Channel Model

In this paper, a novel 3-dimensional (3D) non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed to mimic the ship-to-ship multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication channels. To reflect the realistic maritime propagation environment, the effects of rough sea surface scattering and evaporation duct propagation are investigated in the proposed channel model. The model considers the movements of transmitter (Tx), receiver (Rx), and scatterers, and is capable of capturing the channel characteristics, including non-stationary characteristics, spatial consistency, location-dependent property, etc. Through taking the array cluster evolution into account, the proposed channel model can describe massive MIMO channels and can easily switch to conventional MIMO channel model by adjusting corresponding parameters. Based on the proposed model, key statistical properties like delay/angular/Doppler power spectrum density (PSD), space-time correlation function (STCF), stationary interval, and root mean square (RMS) Doppler/delay spreads in multi-scenarios are derived. The usefulness and accuracy of the proposed model are demonstrated by comparing theoretical results, simulation results, and corresponding measurement results.

A Statistical MIMO Channel Model for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Wireless Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) consisting of a large number of programmable near-passive units has been a hot topic in wireless communications due to its capability in providing smart radio environments to enhance the communication performance. However, the existing research are mainly based on simplistic channel models, which will, in principle, lead to inaccurate analysis of the system performance. In this paper, we propose a general three-dimensional (3D) wideband non-stationary end-to-end channel model for RIS assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, which takes into account the physical properties of RIS, such as unit numbers, unit sizes, array orientations and array configurations. By modeling the RIS by a virtual cluster, we describe the end-to-end channel by a superposition of virtual line-of-sight (V-LoS), single-bounced non-LoS (SB-NLoS), and double-bounced NLoS (DB-NLoS) components. We also derive an equivalent cascaded channel model and show the equivalence between end-to-end and cascaded modeling of RIS channels. Then, a sub-optimal solution with low complexity is used to derive the RIS reflection phases. The impact of physical properties of RIS, such as unit numbers, unit sizes, array orientations, array configurations and array relative locations, on channel statistical characteristics has been investigated and analyzed, the results demonstrate that the proposed model is helpful for characterizing the RIS-assisted communication channels.

Enhancing Ambient Backscatter Communication Utilizing Coherent and Non-Coherent Space-Time Codes

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) leverages the existing ambient radio frequency (RF) environment to implement communication with battery-free devices. The key challenge in the development of AmBC is the very weak RF signals backscattered by the AmBC Tag. To overcome this challenge, we propose the use of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) by incorporating multiple antennas at the Tag as well as at the Reader. Our approach considers both coherent and non-coherent OSTBC so that systems with and without channel state information can be considered. To allow the application of OSTBC, we develop an approximate linearized and normalized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model for the AmBC system. This MIMO channel model is shown to be accurate for a wide range of useful operating conditions. Two coherent detectors and a non-coherent detector are also provided based on the proposed AmBC channel model. Simulation results show that enhanced bit error rate performance can be achieved, demonstrating the benefit of using multiple antennas at the Tag as well as the Reader.

A Non-Stationary Geometry-Based MIMO Channel Model for Millimeter-Wave UAV Networks

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications are expected to play a major role in future space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs). In this paper, a geometric three-dimensional (3D) non-stationary channel model operating at millimeter-wave (mmWave) band is proposed for wideband UAV multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications based on a multiple-layer cylinder reference model, where both stationary and moving clusters around transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) are considered. Unlike the existing UAV-based GBSMs, the proposed model considers both local and far clusters in the propagation environments. On this basis, a continuous-time Markov model with two states is used to model the dynamic properties of clusters (i.e., clusters appear/disappear with time), and the closed-form expressions of the survival probabilities of clusters are derived. Furthermore, we derive and investigate some significant statistical properties, including space-time-frequency correlation function, quasi-stationary interval, and Doppler power spectrum. Numerical results show that the local mobile cluster (LMC) component leads to higher time correlation compared with the local stationary cluster (LSC) component. In addition, it is found that the LMC component leads to larger quasi-stationary interval compared with the LSC component. Finally, it is found that the motion of transceivers and clusters, and the changes of carrier frequency introduce significant fluctuations in Doppler power spectrum. These observations and conclusions can be considered as a guidance for mmWave UAV MIMO system design.

Conceiving Inferential Prototypes of MIMO Channel Models via Buckingham’s Similitude Principle for 30+ GHz through THz Spectrum

Facilitating newer bands of ‘unused’ segments (windows) of RF spectrum falling in the mm-wave range (above 30+ GHz) and seeking usable stretches across unallocated THz spectrum, could viably be considered for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communications. This could accommodate the growing needs of multigigabit 3G/4G applications in outdoor-based backhauls in picocellular networks and in indoor-specific multimedia networking. However, in contrast with cellular and Wi-Fi, wireless systems supporting sub-mm wavelength transreceive communications in the outdoor electromagnetic (EM) ambient could face “drastically different propagation geometry”; also, in indoor contexts, envisaging pertinent spatial-multiplexing with directional, MIMO links could pose grossly diverse propagation geometry across a number of multipaths; as such, channel-models based on stochastic features of diverse MIMO-specific links in the desired test spectrum of mm-wave/THz band are sparsely known and almost non-existent. To alleviate this niche, a method is proposed here to infer sub-mm band MIMO channel-models (termed as “prototypes”) by judiciously sharing “similarity” of details available already pertinent to traditional “models” of lower-side EM spectrum, (namely, VLF through micro-/mm-wave). Relevant method proposed here relies on the “principle of similitude” due to Edgar Buckingham. Exemplar set of “model-to-(inferential)-prototype” transformations are derived and prescribed for an exhaustive set of fading channel models as well as, towards estimating path-loss of various channel statistics in the high-end test spectrum.

A non-stationary relay-based 3D MIMO channel model with time-variant path gains for human activity recognition in indoor environments

Extensive research showed that the physiological response of human tissue to exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields is the induction of an electric current in the body segments. As a result, each segment of the human body behaves as a relay, which retransmits the radio-frequency (RF) signal. To investigate the impact of this phenomenon on the Doppler characteristics of the received RF signal, we introduce a new three-dimensional (3D) non-stationary channel model to describe the propagation phenomenon taking place in an indoor environment. Here, the indoor space is equipped with a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. A single person is moving in the indoor space and is modelled by a cluster of synchronized moving point scatterers, which behave as relays. We derive the time-variant (TV) channel transfer function (CTF) with TV path gains and TV path delays. The expression of the TV path gains is obtained from the instantaneous total received power at the receiver side. This TV total received power is expressed as the product of the TV power of the RF signal initially transmitted and received by a body segment and the TV received power of the redirected signal. These TV powers are determined according the free-space path-loss model. Also, a closed-form approximate solution to the spectrogram of the TVCTF is derived. Here, we analyse the effect of the motion of the person and the validity of the relay assumption on the spectrogram, the TV mean Doppler shift (MDS), and the TV Doppler shift (DS) of the TVCTF. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the proposed channel model.

Three-Dimensional MIMO Channel Model with High-Mobility Wireless Communication Systems Using Leaky Coaxial Cable in Rectangular Tunnel

With the rapid development of high-mobility wireless communication systems, e.g., high-speed train (HST) and metro wireless communication systems, more and more attention has been paid to the wireless communication technology in tunnel-like scenarios. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) nonstationary multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model with high-mobility wireless communication systems using leaky coaxial cable (LCX) inside a rectangular tunnel over the 1.8 GHz band. Taking into account single-bounce scattering under line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagations condition, the analytical expressions of the channel impulse response (CIR) and temporal correlation function (T-CF) are derived. In the proposed channel model, it is assumed that a large number of scatterers are randomly distributed on the sidewall of the tunnel and the roof of the tunnel. We analyze the impact of various model parameters, including LCX spacing, time separation, movement velocity of Rx, and K-factor, on the T-CF of the MIMO channel model. For HST, the results of some further studies on the maximum speed of 360 km/h are given. By comparing the T-CF between the dipole MIMO system and the LCX-MIMO system, we can see that the performance of the LCX-MIMO system is better than that of the dipole MIMO system.

MIMO Systems in a Composite Fading and Generalized Noise Scenario: A Review

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems have been endorsed to enable future wireless communication requirements. The efficient system designing appeals an appropriate channel model that considers all the dominating effects of the wireless environment. Therefore, some complex or less analytically acquiescent composite channel models have been proposed typically for Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) systems. These models are explicitly employed for mobile applications, though, we need a specific study of a model for the MIMO system which can deal with radar clutters and different indoor/outdoor and mobile communication environments. Subsequently, the performance enhancement of the MIMO system is also required in such a scenario. The system performance enhancement can be examined by low error rate and high capacity using spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing respectively. Furthermore, for a more feasible and practical system modeling, we require a generalized noise model along with a composite channel model. Thus, all the patents related to MIMO channel models are revised to achieve the nearoptimal system performance in a real-world scenario. This review paper offers the methods to improve MIMO system performance in less and severe fading as well as shadowing environment and focused on a composite Weibull-gamma fading model. The development is the collective effects of selecting the appropriate channel models, spatial multiplexing/detection, and spatial diversity techniques both at the transmitter and the receivers in the presence of arbitrary noise.
