THE USE OF MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS FOR INTENSIFICATION OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES TEACHING AT TERTIARY LEVEL

An increasing number of lecturers are experimenting with innovative computer-mediated approaches to foreign languages teaching (FLT), dramatically altering the ways students interact with learning content. This comparatively common acceptance of digital learning technologies has enlarged the integration of multimedia teaching and learning tools into the traditional, face-to-face classroom setting, thus blended approach to content supply in FLT has experienced extensive progress in higher education. The article deals with the practice of usage of the most popular multimedia technological tools, such as Prezi, Google Slides, PowerPoint, in foreign languages teaching at higher educational institutions. In the course of research surveys were made to determine the types of collaboration and evaluation preferred by the students, their expectations from foreign language learning process, which, in their turn, gave grounds to point out the factors promoting intensification of the teaching process in the context of blended learning.

The Interactive-GIS-Tutor (IGIST): an option for GIS teaching in resource-poor South African schools

This paper reports findings from a study that examined geographic information system (GIS) knowledge development after the introduction of an Interactive-GIS-Tutor (IGIST) as a multimedia teaching tool. Although GIS has been included in the curriculum over the past decade, the majority of teachers continue to lack formal GIS training, resources, and support. As a potential solution to this problem, the IGIST offers teachers the option of using either a computer connected to a digital projector or a computer laboratory within the same application. Nine classes of grade 11 geography learners (n = 215) were selected and separated into three groups: a projector group (IP), a computer group (IC) and a textbook group (C), which also acted as the control group. After the IGIST intervention, the IP group revealed a statistically significant effect with regard to knowledge development, whereas the IC group demonstrated a significant practical effect. Participant interviews confirmed that the use of IGIST in combination with a digital projector, or within a computer laboratory, is a workable GIS teaching and learning option. Future IGIST development recommendations include providing multi-language options and more video clips with exploratory activities in Quantum GIS. This work provides a foundation upon which to expand dialogue among GIS developers, academia, teachers and the Department of Basic Education on the development of workable GIS teaching options.

Online teaching tool simplifies faculty use of multimedia and improves student interest and knowledge in science.

Digital technologies can improve student interest and knowledge in science. However, researching the vast number of websites devoted to science education and integrating them into undergraduate curricula is time-consuming. We developed an Adobe ColdFusion– and Adobe Flash–based system for simplifying the construction, use, and delivery of electronic educational materials in science. The Online Multimedia Teaching Tool (OMTT) in Neuroscience was constructed from a ColdFusion-based online interface, which reduced the need for programming skills and the time for curriculum development. The OMTT in Neuroscience was used by faculty to enhance their lectures in existing curricula. Students had unlimited online access to encourage user-centered exploration. We found the OMTT was rapidly adapted by multiple professors, and its use by undergraduate students was consistent with the interpretation that the OMTT improved performance on exams and increased interest in the field of neuroscience.

Schola Ludus in Modern Garment: Use of Web Multimedia Simulation in Biomedical Teaching

The Atlas of Physiology and Pathophysiology designed as a multimedia-teaching tool, which helps to explain the function of individual physiological systems, causes and symptoms of their disorders in a visual way through the Internet is one of the projects in which we want to utilize new opportunities of multimedia and simulation models. Development of the Atlas requires cooperation of many professionals: Starting from experienced teachers whose design provides the foundation of quality educational applications, system analysts responsible for creating simulation models for educational simulation games in cooperation with professionals in their field, artists creating the visuals, and finally up to programmers who “knit” together the whole application to achieve its final form. For the interdisciplinary collective creation to be successful, specific development tools with sufficient technical support must be used in each phase of creation; such tools allow for component-based creation of simulation models, creation of interactive multimedia and their final interconnection into a compact unit based on the given design. The Atlas of Physiology and Pathophysiology is a freely available application.

Red eye multimedia teaching tool

Abstract Purpose Since 2004, the Eastern Europe and Middle Eastern External Eye Disease Group has been actively involved in creating various educational programs and tools, targeted at general medical public as well as at ophthalmology residents, younger ophthalmologists and family medicine specialists, regarding diagnosis and treatment of various external eye diseases. Methods The Eastern Europe and Middle Eastern External Eye Disease Group has designed new computer‐based Red Eye Multimedia Teaching Tool, which uses interactive approach, thus enabling active participation of students in teaching process. Results Red Eye Multimedia Teaching Tool focuses on training in establishing correct diagnosis, as well as choosing the most appropriate therapy for the most common external eye diseases: bacterial, viral and allergic conjunctivitis, as well as dry eye. Conclusion The newest multimedia teaching tool focuses on diagnosis and treatment of most common external eye diseases, namely bacterial, viral and allergic conjunctivitis, as well as at dry eye. Its interactive approach enables each student to tailor the teaching process to its needs, interests and level of previous knowledge. It is expected to be used by ophthalmology residents, as well as family medicine physicians and other interested medical staff.

Creating Multimedia Teaching and Training Tools

Abstract Teaching and training users how to operate laboratory equipment is a time-intensive practice. Many new users are students, who have generally high turnover rates; after they complete a class project or degree program, they leave the facility, In addition, users often divide their time among a variety of techniques and equipment. With episodic usage, researchers tend to forget details of instrument operation and need to be retrained. Academic core facilities must balance their productivity against the time it takes to train and retrain an ever-changing parade of users. Site-specific multimedia teaching and training resources, such as films, CDs, videos, or DVDs, if easily available in the laboratory, would enable users to refresh and retrain themselves on equipment operation.

A strategy for managing content complexity in algorithm animation

Computer animation is an excellent medium for capturing the dynamic nature of data structure manipulations, and can be used to advantage in the teaching of algorithms and data structures. A major educational issue is the necessity of providing a means for the student to manage the complexity of the material. We have addressed this issue in a multimedia teaching tool called "Algorithms in Action" by allowing students to view an algorithm at varying levels of detail. Starting with a high level pseudocode description of the algorithm, with accompanying high level animation and textual explanation, students can expand sections of the pseudocode to expose more detail. Animation and explanation are controlled in a coordinated fashion, becoming correspondingly more detailed as the pseudocode is expanded. The tool also supports dofferem , pdes. corresponding to different stages in the learning process. Student feedback suggests that the availability of multiple levels detail and the facility for the user to control the level of detail being viewed is an effective way to manage content complexity.

Radiology on the information superhighway.

To explore the potential for the information superhighway to provide radiologists with new opportunities. The Internet was used as the communication and distribution medium. MOSAIC, a graphical interface, provided access for clients, and a computer was used to serve text, images, sound, and cine onto the Internet. The system can be used to send reports and images to referring physicians or consulting radiologists; to provide a large database that is constantly available; to provide an increasing collection of teaching files; and to distribute interactive, multimedia teaching tools that can be used on any computer system. The use of the MOSAIC interface facilitates interaction, which allows users with limited computer experience to access the system. The Internet can dramatically expand the ways radiologists interact with their colleagues. These preliminary results indicate that there will be great challenges and opportunities for improving care and teaching in the future.

Development of a computer program for teaching periodontal diagnosis based on clinical epidemiological principles

Multimedia teaching tools in dental education are still rare. This paper describes the development of an inexpensive yet powerful computer program for instruction in the principles of clinical epidemiology. The application was developed in the context of periodontal diagnostic methodologies at the third year D.D.S. level. Principles of probabilistic thinking are invoked as the student is guided from the application of raw research data to the derivation of likelihood ratios and how they affect clinical decision making. A questionnaire was used to evaluate student satisfaction with the program and the responses indicated good acceptance of the concepts presented in the program and an interest in further computer-aided instruction.

A new teaching tool for dental and medical schools: Multimedia CD-ROM on dental and skeletal development

Multimedia teaching tools in Medicine are still very rare. Their presentation on a CD-ROM format is part of the emerging technologies in Medical Informatics. The Multimedia material presented here on Dental and Skeletal Development is mostly a Database and a Tutorial. The Database, which contains more than 2000 hand/wrist radiographs, is mostly intended for Pediatricians, Endocrinologists, Forensic Dentists and Physicians, as well as for Orthodontists and Pedodontists. The material is the result of 20-year of Longitudinal Growth study of children in Montreal. In this Multimedia CD-ROM, the research results are used for Medical teaching purposes.
