Development of Home Educational Materials for Families of Preterm Infants.

Parent educational materials describing infant positioning for a home program are vital in supplementing NICU discharge instructions and promoting parent confidence. To document the process of developing a brochure and DVD of a positioning program, using evidence-based practice and NICU expert feedback. A trifold brochure and companion DVD were developed to demonstrate infant positioning to parents of premature infants for a home developmental program following NICU discharge. A standard process of development was followed for the brochure and DVD script and production. The process included review and comment by eight NICU professionals and several revisions. Content of the brochure and DVD and the process entailed in their development is described. Guidelines outlining the process for development of educational materials for families are provided. Creation of multimedia educational materials for parents of infants who are NICU graduates requires a multistep process to ensure usefulness and validity.

Inquiry-based learning in Science Education. Why e-learning can make a difference

Inquiry-based learning in Science Education is based on the belief that it is crucial to ensure that students deeply understand what they are learning, and not simply repeat contents and information. To this extent, IBSE is not only a way to teach Science effectively, but more importantly it can be a way to teach how to learn in a broader sense, developing problem solving comprehension and critical thinking skills, using properly prior knowledge and rejecting naive conceptions. It implies a cooperative endeavour, soliciting communicative skills to share with others observations and research questions, and it requires specific skills to work successfully as a part of a team. However, it is arguably that nowadays IBSE is a widespread teaching and learning practice, mainly because it involves more complex pedagogical skills than those needed for traditional face-to-face classes (e.g. organizing stimuli and experimental settings, managing the observational process and holding group discussion on formulating questions and ideas, guiding students in recording and reporting their experiences). But most of all, this happens because its development is multifaceted, highly personalized for each student, and based on a variety of sources and stimuli. In this frame of reference, several hints can be envisaged for designing e-learning solutions specifically devoted to strengthen a wider cultural perspective in Science Education, thanks to personalized and automated solutions for learning which includes: interactivity, multimedia educational materials, social networking, virtual environments for learning.

University e-Portfolios as a New Higher Education Teaching Method. The Development of a Multimedia Educational Material (MEM)

The new European university context requires a methodological and evaluative shift towards active didactic, socio-constructive and investigative perspectives that are student-centred. This study describes the learning setting, the results and the conclusions of an innovative practical exercise carried out by first-year students on two different degree courses at an Andalusian university, using e-portfolios set up for group work and implemented through an edublog. The study's main aim is to establish the most significant achievements, problems and evidence that emerge from this didactic group project. The project includes the design and implementation of a multimedia educational material (MEM), and involves the students in didactic planning and self-assessment processes. The conclusions show that the e-portfolio is a didactic method that fully integrates teaching, learning and assessment into a continuum by allowing students to work together didactically on such aspects. This methodological alternative also greatly helps the lecturer in his/her understanding of the students' learning processes, the working methods of his/her classes, the problems associated with team working, the information sources that students use, and the tutoring and learning-assessment processes. Lastly, the e-portfolio enables the future social educators' levels of didactic comprehension and professional-competency acquisition to be gauged.

Aspectos organizativos y didácticos implicados en la elaboración de material educativo multimedia (MEM) para el fomento de la motivación empresarial

The article describes organzational and didactic issues involved in UnioviEmprende, a motivating, interactive and easy to use multimedia educational material (MEM) which aim is to stimulate the enterpreuner initiative among university students. It can be used both, as supporting resource for face-to face teaching sessions and as a self-training resource. We begging mentioning the structure of the multidisciplinary team whose professionals have built the MEM following a cooperative working methodology. Later on the article focus on describing the components of the instructional design. The actions taken to evaluate the MEM are described as well at the end of the document.

Designing Multimedia Learning Material for Adult Education: An interdisciplinary approach

In the present paper we attempt an interdisciplinary approach on multimedia educational material for adults. We present some hermeneutic tools that help us focus on issues concerning educational material’s content structuring, its degree of specialization and learner’s guidance, as well as on issues concerning its degree of immediacy and interaction with the learners. Such an interdisciplinary outline could help designers/instructors draw some useful general conclusions.

Multimedia Educational Material and Remote Laboratory for Sliding Mode Control Measurements

The paper presents a multimedia educational program of DC servo drives for distant learning with a special emphasis on sliding mode control. The program contains of three parts: animation, simulation and internet based measurement. The animation program explains the operation of DC motors, gives its time- and frequency-domain equations, transfer functions and the theoretical background necessary for controller design for DC servo motors. The simulation model of the DC servo motor and the controller can be designed by the students based on the animation program. The students can also test their controllers through the internet based measurement, which is the most important part from engineering point of view. After the measurements are executed, the students can download the measured data and compare them to the simulation results.

Creation and application of three-dimensional computer-graphic animations for introduction to radiological physics and technology

Physics-related subjects are important in the educational fields of radiological physics and technology. However, conventional teaching tools, for example texts, equations, and two-dimensional figures, are not very effective in attracting the interest of students. Therefore, we have created several multimedia educational materials covering radiological physics and technology. Each educational presentation includes several segments of high-quality computer-graphic animations designed to attract students' interest. We used personal computers (PCs) and commercial software to create and compile these. Undergraduate and graduate students and teachers and related professionals contributed to the design and creation of the educational materials as part of student research. The educational materials can be displayed on a PC monitor and manipulated with popular free software. Opinion surveys conducted in undergraduate courses at Kitasato University support the effectiveness of our educational tools in helping students gain a better understanding of the subjects offered and in raising their interest.

An Interactive Multimedia Instruction System: IMPRESSION for Double Loop Instructional Design Process Model

In this paper, we propose an interactive instruction system named IMPRESSION, which allows performance of interactive presentations using multimedia educational materials in class. In recent years, although many practices of educational methodology with information technology and presentation tools using multimedia resources as educational materials have come into common use, instructors can only present such materials in a slide-sheet form through the use of such presentation tools in class. Therefore, instructors can neither do formative evaluations nor can they present suitable materials according to students' reactions in class. Our proposed methodology employs a scenario-based approach in a double loop instructional design process to overcome such problems. Instructors design an instructional plan as a scenario, and subsequently implement and modify the plan through formative evaluation during the class. They then conduct a summative evaluation based on planned and implemented instructions for redesign. To realize our methodology, in this paper we propose and design an instruction system that provides functions to select and present multimedia materials interactively provided on the Internet during the class; we then record these instructions. After implementing it, we confirmed that we can conduct the class flexibly based on our methodology through its practical use in an actual classroom environment.

Development of Multimedia Educational Material in Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Purpose: Cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB) is one of the most fundamental and important subjects in cardiovascular surgery. Thus, it is insufficient to understand CPB through only traditional education methods as a comprehensive knowledge based on anatomy and physiology of the circulating system and surgical techniques is essential. The aim of this study was to develop a multimedia CPB teaching program for a more rewarding learning experience. Methods: Among all teaching materials, text and picture-based lectures, movies on surgical procedures, and animations were chosen to be included in the teaching programs. Firstly, we made lecture notes and a powerpoint lecture with narration. Secondly, we made and edited movie files on surgical procedures, and incorporated sound in the movies. Thirdly, we developed animation files including all CPB procedures using flash 5.0. Finally we made a CD ROM and a web page for CPB and other basic surgical techniques. A basic wurgical procedures Self-test was also included. Questionnaires were given to medical students to evaluate the effectiveness and the ease of use of this program. Results: The developed CPB educational program was distributed in a CD-ROM. An internet homepage(http://surgery.chungbuk.ac.kr) for basic surgical procedures was constructed with the multimedia CPB lecture. The results of the questionnaires were positive, Proving the improved understanding of CPB. Conclusion: This multimedia education program on CPB not only can help medical students to easily understand the structures and principles involved in CPB, but also give indirect experience of this surgical procedure.

Clinician-Patient E-mail Communication: Challenges for Reimbursement

Clinicians are rapidly gaining experience with online clinician-patient consultation, and more tools are becoming available to support these efforts. In addition, we now have evidence that using electronic communication is cost-effective to payers and appealing to patients and providers. At present, there appear to be few barriers to the adoption of these solutions for practices that use other online services. Security concerns can easily be overcome by using programs described in this commentary. Larger and longer studies that evaluate the benefits and cost savings in more detail may help convince other payers and providers of the utility of the Web-based programs. More studies are needed to understand the effect of dinician-patient electronic communication on the costs of caring for chronic illness. When these solutions also include support tools, such as electronic prescribing, which could improve patient safety and quality of care, they should be encouraged. In their article entitled, "Electrons in Flight-Email between Doctors and Patients," Delbanco and Sands postulate that the future of e-communication in medicine will be integrated with a patient-controlled health record and will include secure synchronous and asynchronous communication, video conferencing and messaging, instant transcription into the written record, full-patient access to the record, translation into different languages, connectivity to multiple data sources, incorporation of multi-media educational materials. It-will also allow data from home-based diagnostic technology to be sent to clinicians. "Electronic communication will move medicine inexorably toward such transparency, enabling doctors and patients to share knowledge, responsibility, and decision-making more equally. We need to explore rapidly how this change will affect the quality of care for patients and the quality of life for doctors." The widespread dependence on Internet-based electronic communication to support a variety of commercial, educational, and entertainment needs and interests offers us an opportunity to develop innovative approaches to some long-standing problems-assuring the accessibility of clinicians to their patients and the effectiveness and timeliness of communication between them. It is exciting that we now have well-documented examples of how these new technologies can be used to enhance the quality of primary care practice in both large and small practice organizations.

Material educativo multimedia. Una herramienta de apoyo a la enseñanza de la Otorrinolaringología

Due to multimedia technologies, the medical information has taken an extraordinary growing. Nevertheless, the education at University will turn out to be a more complex pedagogic process. We present a multimedia educational material (MEM), developed as an online course to "Seminars of Otolaryngology", and available free at the University website. MEM was designed and edited by, ENT teachers, pedagogues, and image and computer experts. It has been structured as a series of modules that integrate texts, images, movie clips, video, audio and animations. The schematic presentation stands out with progressive access to the topics through internal and external links. The pedagogic resources give additional support by learning objectives, glossary, references, index and searcher. Finally, the activities and instrumental simulations complete the training in diagnosis and treatment. CHEMISTS REACH OUT TO CANADIAN PUBLIC

For 20 years, three chemistry professors in Canada have worked to inform the public about the roles of chemistry in everyday life. Now their prolific and varied efforts have finally found a home. The Office of Chemistry & Society (OCS) at McGill University, Montreal, inaugurated not quite a year ago, is channeling the professors' output of continuing education courses, public lectures and demonstrations, newspaper columns, books, and radio and television programs to the Canadian public. The multifaceted outreach program is the work of David N. Harpp, chemistry department chair at McGill; Joseph A. Schwarcz, director of OCS and chemistry professor at McGill; and Ariel E. Fenster, chemistry professor at Vanier College in nearby St. Laurent, Quebec, who is an adjunct professor at McGill and OCS director of communications. WWW‐Based Water Quality Modeling Systems to Enhance Student Learning

AbstractThis paper focuses on how student understanding of complex environmental systems can be improved by developing interactive, WWW‐accessible water quality modeling systems and supporting multimedia educational materials that provide experiential learning opportunities. Students dynamically utilize online models and obtain immediate graphical responses to questions of interest. Presented herein is a description of WWW‐based environmental simulation capabilities and multimedia educational materials that improve student understanding of environmental systems, particularly water quality. The material includes case studies to be applied to science and engineering higher education. Case studies give students experience in modeling real life systems and expose them to environmental issues and water quality protection measures. An evaluation of the educational tool was conducted and showed that the tool is an effective way to provide education concerning complex environmental systems.

Interactive Multimedia Design and Production Processes

The purpose of this study was to provide information on the multimedia design and development process used by the practitioners in the field. It sought to inform students who wish to pursue a career in multimedia of the skills and knowledge needed and instructors who teach multimedia related courses of the process employed by practitioners so as to help better prepare students for the job market. Extensive interviews were conducted with the experienced multimedia developers who assumed various roles and were involved in developing multimedia educational materials. The findings of the study were presented through the following aspects: (1) how the multimedia production process works, (2) the roles and responsibilities of people who work in the field, (3) the factors contributing to successful multimedia development, (4) tips and techniques in multimedia development offered by practitioners, and (5) the popular hardware and software used. Implications of the findings and suggestions for how students should prepare themselves to enter the multimedia field were also discussed.

A case study in the development of multi-media educational material: the VHDL interactive tutorial

While industry and academia have been aware of the need for an intensive study of embedded digital system design, resource constraints, fuzzy objectives, and short-time horizon have handicapped progress. The $150M Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors (RASSP) program is a major DARPA/Tri-Service effort designed to overcome these limitations. This effort has developed a number of new technologies that will lead to dramatically shorter prototyping times and reduced life cycle costs. In a effort to ensure the successful transfer of these new technologies, the RASSP Education and Facilitation (RASSP E&F) program is working to transfer this technology into graduate and undergraduate curricula by developing and transferring educational material. Only by successfully inserting these rapid-prototyping technologies into the curricula and research activities of the university community will the long term benefits of these technologies be realized. To achieve this technology transfer objective, the RASSP E&F program has developed educational material on the key elements of rapid-prototyping of embedded digital systems technology. The result of this effort is a set of educational covering selected topics. In conjunction with IEEE, several of the modules developed by the RASSP E&F program designed to teach students the VHDL language were converted to HTML and linked with the VHDL language reference manual to form a self-paced VHDL interactive tutorial. A demonstration version of this learning tool, currently published by IEEE, is presented.
