Although phased arrays have been widely used in various applications, their beams can only be steered to an angle for all range bins. In contrast, the frequency diverse array (FDA) introduces a tiny frequency offset across its array elements to form a range-angle-dependent beampattern. Nevertheless, the standard linear FDA can only provide an S-shaped beampattern, which is a disadvantage for target indication. In this communication, we propose a new FDA framework, which adopts symmetrical and logarithmic frequency offsets together with multicarrier technique, to produce a dot-shaped beampattern for target indication. The superiority of the proposed scheme is verified by both numerical results and comparisons with existing FDA frameworks.
