Dimensioning an FPGA for Real-Time Implementation of State of the Art Neural Network-Based HPA Predistorter

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the key modulations for current and novel broadband communications standards. For example, Multi-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is an excellent choice for the ECMA-368 Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless communication standard. Nevertheless, the high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of MB-OFDM UWB signals reduces the power efficiency of the key element in mobile devices, the High Power Amplifier (HPA), due to non-linear distortion, known as the non-linear saturation of the HPA. In order to deal with this limiting problem, a new and efficient pre-distorter scheme using a Neural Networks (NN) is proposed and also implemented on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This solution based on the pre-distortion concept of HPA non-linearities offers a good trade-off between complexity and performance. Some tests and validation have been conducted on the two types of HPA: Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTA) and Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA). The results show that the proposed pre-distorter design presents low complexity and low error rate. Indeed, the implemented architecture uses 10% of DSP (Digital Signal Processing) blocks and 1% of LUTs (Look up Table) in case of SSPA, whereas it only uses 1% of LUTs in case of TWTA. In addition, it allows us to conclude that advanced machine learning techniques can be efficiently implemented in hardware with the adequate design.

Performance Analsis of Clipping Technique for Papr Reduction of MB-OFDM UWB Signals

Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is used as efficacious procedure for ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless communication applications, which divides the spectrum into various subbands, whose bandwidth is approximately 500MHz. Major arduousness in multiband-OFDM is ,it have very large peak to average power ratio value which causes the signal to enter into dynamic region that consequence in the loss of orthogonal properties and results in the interference of the carrier signals which crops the amplifier saturation and finally limits the capacity of the system. Many PAPR amortize algorithms have reported in the survey and pre-coding is PAPR reduction which is inserted after modulation in the OFDM system. The Existing work presents the reduction of that value by different clipping techniques namely Classical-Clipping (CC), Heavy side-Clipping (HC), Deep-Clipping (DC) and Smooth-Clipping (SC) and their comparison analysis is done. Every clipping method is best at its own level .The proficiency of these strategies are evaluated in locutions of average power disparity, complete system decadence and PAPR reduction. Finally results show the MB OFDM yields better performance to reduce PAPR in effective way.

Peak to Average Power Ratio Reduction in ECMA-368 Ultra wideband Communication Systems Using Active Constellation Extension

Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is an efficient approach for The ECMA-368 Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless communication Standard. However, the high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of MB-OFDM UWB signals, limits the power efficiency of the High Power Amplifier (HPA) due to nonlinear distortion. Hence the need to reduce the PAPR of MB-OFDM UWB signals. In this paper, the efficiency of some recently proposed methods including the Active Constellation Extension Approximate Gradient-Project technique (ACE-AGP) is evaluated in real ECMA-368 communication system, with the use of typical HPA models and the UWB channel models defined in IEEE 802.15.3a standard. The PAPR measure and the bit error rate (BER) are used as performance measures in this evaluation.The results indicate that the ACE-AGP algorithm introduces a significant reduction of PAPR about 6.7 dB and reduces the BER degradation in all UWB channel models with different data rates.

Research on SLM Algorithm for PAPR reduction in MB-OFDM UWB Systems

Abstract Multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is one of the key techniques of ultra wideband (UWB) systems. A major drawback of MB-OFDM technique is the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmit signal. In this paper, a novel phase sequence of selected mapping algorithm which makes the side information not needed is designed to lower the PAPR of MB-OFDM UWB signals. It is also shown that comparable PAPR reduction performance with the original SLM algorithm can be achieved with a small increase in signal power. Simulation results show that there must be equilibriums between SLM computational complexity and PAPR performance. The objective of the new algorithm is to lower PAPR close to ordinary SLM technique with reduced computational complexity with little performance degradation and achieves better system resource utilization.

Effect of PAPR Reduction Techniques on the Performance of MB-OFDM UWB in Wireless Communications

Multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is an efficient approach for ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless communication applications. One major difficulty of MB-OFDM UWB signal is its large peak-to-average power Ratio (PAPR). The high PAPR limits its capacity due to the distortion caused by the nonlinear characteristics of both the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and high-power amplifier (HPA). Hence, it is necessary to reduce the PAPR of MB-OFDM UWB signals. Several techniques have been reported in the literature for PAPR reduction in OFDM. These techniques can also be extended for PAPR reduction in MB-OFDM UWB signals. However, comparative performance evaluation of these techniques for PAPR reduction in MB-OFDM UWB signals is lacking in the literature. Hence, in this paper, four techniques, namely, filtering after clipping, turbo coding of clipped signals, tunable predistorter, and active constellation extension are extended for PAPR reduction of MB-OFDM UWB signals and their performance is evaluated and compared through computer simulations. In this evaluation, the bit-error rate (BER) is used as the performance measure.
