Strangeness production in p+W and S+W Interactions at 200 A GeV/c

Strange and multistrange baryon and antibaryon production is a useful probe into the dynamics of the hot hadronic matter created in central heavy ion interactions. Relative production yields and transverse mass spectra are presented and compared for pW and SW interactions.

Strange particle production in sulphur-sulphur interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon

The WA94 experiment is designed to study the production of strange and multistrange baryons and antibaryons at central rapidity in sulphur-sulphur interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon. Particle production ratios have been obtained in the kinematic region 1.2 ≤ p T ≤ 3.0 GeV/ c and 2.5 ≤ y lab ≤ 3.0, and m T spectra for Λ, Λ , Ξ − and Ξ − particles are presented. Preliminary results on charged kaon production are also discussed, together with the status of charged particle identification using the Omega RICH.

A study of cascade and strange baryon production in sulphur-sulphur interactions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon

Strange and multistrange baryon and antibaryon production has been studied in sulphur sulphur interactions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon at central rapidity using the CERN Omega Spectrometer. Particle production ratios and transverse mass spectra are presented for Λ, Ξ −, Λ and Ξ − .

First results from the 1994 lead beam run of WA97

WA97 is designed to study strange and multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon production in 160 A GeV c PbPb collisions at the SPS with a telescope of silicon microdetectors. Four planes of silicon pixel detectors were successfully employed during the 1994 Pb run. A total of 60M central PbPb events were collected. We describe the experimental setup and report on some preliminary results from the off-line analysis.

Measurement of the [formula omitted] production ratio in central S-W interactions at 200 A GeV/c

Strange baryon and in particular multi-strange baryon production is suggested to be a useful probe in the search for quark gluon plasma formation in heavy ion collisions. We have measured the (Ω − + Ω +) (Ξ − + Ξ +) production ratio to be 0.8±0.4 at central rapidity and ϱ T > 1.6 GeV/c.

The Omega spectrometer, equipped with MWPCs operated in the butterfly mode, is used to measure particles in the central rapidity window with PT > 1.0 GeV/ c. Preliminary results are presented on the production of Λ, \\ ̄ gL, Ξ − and Ξ − .

Observation of Ω − and [formula omitted] in sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon

Multistrange baryon and antibaryon production is suggested to be a useful probe in the search for Quark-Gluon Plasma formation. We report the detection of an Ω − + Ω − signal in central S+ W interactions at 200 A GeV/c and measure the ratio Ω − Ω − = 0.57±0.41 at central rapidity and p T>1.6 GeV/ c.

Multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon production is expected to be a useful probe in the search for Quark-Gluon Plasma formation. We present the transverse mass distributions of negative particles, K os, Λs, Λs, and Ξ − s produced in sulphurtungsten interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon and give the corrected ratios ΛΛ, Ξ −Λ and Ξ −/Λ . We note that our ratio Ξ −/ Λ appears large in comparison to that from p p interactions.

Multistrange baryon and antibaryon production is expected to be a useful probe in the search for quark-gluon plasma formation. We describe the procedure used to select these cascade candidates and show that Ξ − and Ξ − decays can be identified. The ratio of Ξ Ξ production, corrected for geometrical acceptances and reconstruction efficiencies, is 0.39 ± 0.07 for sulphur-tungsten interactions in the central rapidity interval 2.3< Y lab<3.0 and p T>1.1 GeV/ c.

We describe the procedure used to select these cascade candidates and show that Ξ − and Ξ − decays can be identified. Preliminary ratios of Ξ/Ξ production in sulphur-tungsten and proton-tungsten interactions are also presented.
