The Impact of The English Language Speech Assistant (ELSA) Application on Students’ Pronunciation Skills

This study aims to evaluate the impact of the ELSA Speak app on students' pronunciation learning at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar by comparing their performance before and after using the app. This study employed a pre-experimental design, utilizing a post-test and pre-test method with a quantitative approach. The researchers selected 40 students from the English education class A and B of 2023 at the university. A questionnaire was conducted to understand the students' perspectives on their pronunciation skills after undergoing the treatment. The results showed that only 4 students showed a decrease in scores of pre-tests and post-test (negative ranks), whereas 23 participants demonstrated an improvement from the pretest to the posttest. The data from the t-test analysis indicated that most students experienced an increase in pronunciation skills, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving the pronunciation of EFL learners. Additionally, this data shows that the ELSA Speak app has a significant impact on improving pronunciation and also motivation.

INVESTIGATE THE ROLE OF TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTION IN FOSTERING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AT SMP ISLAM AR-RAAFI’

Salma, 2024 “Investigate the Role of Teacher-Student Interaction in Fostering Critical Thinking Skills at Smp Islam Ar-Raafi’”. A thesis of English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. (Supervised by Ika Sastrawati and Hijrah). The study aims to find out whether the interaction between teachers and students can stimulate the student's critical thinking. This study examines the interaction between teachers and students. The subjects of the study were one English teacher and five students of SMP Islam Ar-Raafi’ Makassar who were selected using purposive sampling techniques. This method of research is qualitative research with phenomena experienced by the subject of research, for example interactions, learning materials, etc. This research data is collected through observation and interviews. Data analysis techniques use data reduction, data display, and conclusion/verification. This research is expected to benefit teachers and students in interacting in the classroom. In this case, teachers are asked to build interaction with students by increasing communication to students. With the interaction between teachers and students, students can exchange views, express opinions, analyze, and evaluate the materials studied, which of course can encourage the critical thinking of students. It can be concluded that the role of interaction among teacher and students is very important in fostering the student's ctirical thinking skills.

Students’ Perceptions of Using E-Portfolio in Learning Language Material Development at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar: A Descriptive Qualitative Research

The use of digital technology in education has driven a shift from traditional paper-based portfolios to electronic portfolios (E-portfolios) that are more efficient, flexible, and have a wider reach. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the use of E-portfolios in Language Material Development (LMD) learning. This research was conducted qualitatively by involving five eighth-semester students from the English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, using a descriptive qualitative method Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, employing purposive sampling techniques. The results of the study indicate that there is a positive perception of the use of E-portfolios, including ease of access, organization of materials and tasks, and the ability to store large amounts of data. Additionally, the available features help students create a more attractive, easy-to-understand E-portfolio display that is also secure and protects privacy. The electronic devices owned by the student further support and facilitate the process of uploading assignments into E-portfolios. This research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the effectiveness and impact of using E-portfolios at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar.

A Non-English Students' Strategies in Learning Technical Vocabularies

This research aimed to finding out the strategies that usually used in learning technical vocabularies by Non-English students’. This research applied the Descriptive Qualitative Method, which took 2 months period of it for the data collection by using interview. The research involved ten students’ from Faculty Economic and Business Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar as the participants. The scope of the study is tend to analyze the strategies used by Non-English students’ in learning a foreign language, in this case English. A result of this research showed that the strategies that usually used in learning technical vocabularies by Non-English students’ most of the students’ used direct strategies, namely memory strategies, cognitive strategies and compensation strategies. And the students’ also used indirect strategies, namely metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies. Based on the data obtained, the researcher concluded that the students’ used both strategies in learning technical vocabularies.

An Analysis of English Paragraph Development Made by the Third Semester Students of English Education at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar

Nurlyanti Wulandari Karim, 2024. “An analysis of English Paragraph Development Made By The Third Semester Students of English Education at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar”. Supervised by Syamsyiarna Nappu and Erwin Akib. This research aimed at explore the students paragraph development in terms of coherence and cohesion in writing argumentative essays. The participants of this research were nine students of third semester at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. This research applied a quantitative descriptive design. The data collection techniques were lecturer’s document. Meanwhile, the data analysis techniques used descriptive quantitative for analyzing the paragraph development in terms of coherence and cohesion. The findings of this research described as follows; (1) In terms of coherence, the average score of students’ paragraph development in coherence is 2.91. (2) Furthermore, the average score of students’ paragraph development in cohesion is 2.75. (3). It can be concluded that the paragraph development from students’ in writing argumentative essays in terms of coherence and cohesion are a little competent and the factors that make it difficult for someone to write a paragraph, such as lack of structure, limited vocabulary, improper grammar, or difficulty developing ideas clearly. These factors require preparation before starting to write a paragraph, including identifying the topic, planning the paragraph structure, gathering supporting information, and preparing connecting words

The Effect of Ajwa Dates (Phoenix dactylifera L) Consumption to Antral Ovarium Imaging by with Ultrasonography (USG) Transvaginal of Perimenopausal Women

Objectives: Perimenopause is a transition from the reproductive period to the menopause stage with a decrease in the number and function of oocytes. Transvaginal ultrasound is a reliable alternative method for detecting ovarian reserve. Ajwa dates contain phenolic and other flavonoid components which are considered to have the potential to improve the ovarian condition of perimenopausal women which can be assessed by increasing the number of antral follicles as measured by transvaginal ultrasound. This study aims to determine the effect of consuming ajwa dates (Phoenix dactylifera L.) on the appearance of ovarian follicles using transvaginal ultrasound in perimenopausal women. Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-post control design carried out at RSIA Sitti Khadijah I Muhammadiyah Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, from May to September 2023. This research involved 44 perimenopausal subjects aged 42-48 years who were divided into 2 groups randomly (28 intervention groups, 16 control groups). Subjects in the intervention group consumed seven pieces of ajwa dates (60-70 grams each seven pieces) every morning before having breakfast for eight weeks. The transvaginal USG was performed twice, the first was on day three of the menstrual cycle of each subject and the second was after eight weeks of intervention. A comparison of changes in ovarian follicles was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: This study showed a significant decrease in the number of antral follicles in the intervention group and an increase in the number in the control group (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the size of the antral follicles showed a significant increase in the intervention group and a significant decrease in the size of the antral follicles in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Consuming Ajwa dates as an exogenous antioxidant can affect the number and size of antral follicles, which is an indicator of improving the condition of perimenopausal women's ovaries.International Journal of Human and Health Sciences Supplementary Issue 01: 2024 Page: S66

THE FACTORS ANXIETY INFLUENCE STUDENTS’ READING ALLOUD AT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The purpose of this study will to determine the anxiety factor of students in reading English aloud in class. The methodology used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The research data were obtained using two instruments, namely observation and a questionnaire containing questions related to what are the causal factors in reading anxiety. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The population in this study were students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. The number of samples used was 13 students in 1 class. The results finding provide by qualitatively and quantitatively. The result of the study show that the level of anxiety to read aloud with an average of 61.03%, with the calculations obtained from the questionnaire data. From the observation results show that there are two factors in anxiety when reading aloud, namely internal and external factors. Among these factors, internal factors show a higher or prominent level of anxiety on aspects of worrying about reading effects and fear of making mistakes. Which can be minimized with several stages, preparation, relaxation and positive thinking.

ANALISIS KETERAMPILAN KOMUNIKASI DAN KETERAMPILAN KOLABORASI MAHASISWA PENDIDIKAN BIOLOGI

Abstract The 21 st century skills that students must have include Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration, which is often abbreviated as 4C. Communication skills orally and in writing is one of the competencies in dealing with today's life. Based on the results of observations of Biology Education students at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, it shows that students have not been able to communicate and collaborate well and smoothly among fellow students. The purpose of this study was to analyze collaboration skills and communication skills of Biology Education students at the University of Muhammadiyah Makassar. This type of research is Ex post Facto which will be carried out in the odd semester of 2022-2023. The instrument in this study was a questionnaire on student collaboration skills and communication skills Based on the research results found that communication skills in the good category with an average of 70.52 while collaboration skills are in the collaborative category with an average of 65.80.

THE EFFECT OF EASE AND SPEED ON INTEREST IN USING THE QRIS PAYMENT SYSTEM ON STUDENTS MAJORING IN MANAGEMENT, FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS, UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MAKASSAR

The purpose of this study is a type of quantitative research with the aim of determining the effect of ease and speed on interest in using the QRIS payment system on students majoring in Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar. Samples were taken from students majoring in Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar. The type of data used in this study is quantitative data obtained from questionnaires that are shared and relate to the problem under study. Data collection is carried out by observation and distribution of questionnaires. In this study, the data sources used in data collection include primary data and secondary data. The research instrument used in this study used the Likert scale method. The results showed that data using statistical calculations through the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 26 application at the stage of data collection, data management, and data analysis regarding the effect of convenience and speed on interest in using the QRIS payment system in students majoring in management, faculty of economics and business, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar, it can be concluded that convenience has a positive and significant effect The interest in using in students majoring in management, faculty of economics and business, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar, and speed has a negative and significant effect on interest in using in students majoring in management, faculty of economics and business, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar.

The strategy that can be applied is the ST Strategy is a strategy that uses the strength of the company to overcome threats or commonly called diversification strategies.

Design Model for Development of Student Interests in Investing in the Investment Gallery of the University of Muhammadiyah Makassar

The aim of the study was to determine the level of effectiveness of the design model for developing student interest in investing in the Muhammadiyah University Makassar Investment Gallery. The specific target to be achieved in this research is the design of a model for developing interest in investing when students are still in the study environment to be effective and provide benefits, for example saving to guarantee the future and saving to study and make a profit. This study uses applied qualitative methods. Data collection techniques are library research, interviews and observation. As for the research instruments for the initial study, validation and try out questionnaires were used for students and the community. Meanwhile for the design of the model an achievement test was used to develop interest in investing for students. With the development model design, the level of effectiveness is high for students who are interested in investing independently and influence their friends both directly and indirectly. Students are also agents of change in society, from a consumptive society to a productive society by investing.

Aromaterapi Lavender dalam Menurunkan Tingkat Kecemasan Pasien Pre Operasi Sectio Caesarea

Anxiety is an unpleasant feeling described by restlessness or tension and abnormal hemodynamic signs. Anxiety in sectio caesarea patients can be reduced by pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy. This study aims to determine the effect of giving aromatherapy to preoperative patients on reducing anxiety levels at RSIA Kadijah 1 Muhammadiyah Makassar. The design used is a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental pre-post test design without control. The patient population was obtained as many as 138 patients with a sampling technique using the Slovin formula with an error rate (margin of error) of 10%, so the number of samples was 58 respondents. The instrument used in data collection is the HARS scale questionnaire. The results of the study The highest patient anxiety level before giving lavender aromatherapy experienced a mild level of anxiety with a score of 14-20 as many as 42 people or 72.4%, after being given lavender aromatherapy the highest patient anxiety level experienced a non-anxious anxiety level with a score of <14 as many as 28 people or 48.3% with the results of the paired t-test statistic obtained the value of = 0.001 where the level of significance (ρ <0.05). The conclusion of this study is that there is an effect of lavender aromatherapy on reducing anxiety levels in preoperative sectio caesarea patients.

 This research aims to determine clarity and readability in analyzing journal articles used in critical reading comprehension classroom in the English Education Department by using a calculator website. Critical reading in the Department of English Education. This study focuses on analyzing the clarity and readability of journal article texts in critical reading comprehension classroom at the Department of English Education, Unismuh Makassar. research sample, by communicating with an English lecturer in a critical reading comprehension classroom at Muhammadiyah University Makassar. The data analysis technique used is using a simple web calculator, to measure concrete sentences, examples per page, word frequency, and active sentences of a journal article that can be found using a calculator. And using the website readability calculator calculates the number of sentences, words, syllables, and characters in your sample. This study uses the Flashch equation convenience formula to measure the readability of journal article texts.

Peran Asia Muslim Charity Foundation Dalam Pengembangan Manajemen Pendikan Islam di Ma’had Al-Birr Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar

Asia Muslim Charity Foundation (AMCF) as an Islamic philanthropic institution has been a very important role in the sustainability and improvement of the quality of Islamic education in Indonesia. This research aims to formulate and describe the role of AMCF as an Islamic philanthropic in developing education at the Ma'had Al-Birr Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research used a descriptive-qualitative approach. Data collection techniques used open interviews, direct observation, and documentation studies. The results of the research show that first, the successful implementation of education at Ma'had Al-Birr is due to the high commitment of Ma'had leaders and Unismuh Makassar in carrying out the vision, mission, and goals of Ma'had education. Second, the form of educational management development implemented at Ma'had Al-Birr is the development of physical infrastructure, human resource development, and the transformation of Ma'had into the Undergraduate (S1) program. The transformation of Ma'had to the bachelor program includes teacher management, leadership management, curriculum management, facilities and infrastructure management, student management, and financial management which are integrated with the academic system of the University of Muhammadiyah Makassar.

Prediksi Tingkat Kelulusan Menggunakan K-Means Pada Program Studi Informatika Unismuh Makassar

Predicting timely graduation brings numerous benefits not only to students but also to the university itself. Creating a graduation prediction model assists students and academic advisors in fostering a positive environment that encourages on-time graduation by developing a predictive model for graduation rates using the K-means data mining method in the Informatics study program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. This method is used to cluster students based on attributes such as total credits taken, semester Grade Point Average (GPA), and overall Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). The clustering aims to identify patterns and characteristics of student graduation. Data from several semesters is collected and preprocessed, including data normalization and transformation. The research steps involve data preprocessing, cluster labeling, distance calculation to cluster centers, and result analysis. The analysis shows that the K-means method can generate student clusters with varying graduation rate patterns. The formed clusters can be interpreted as groups of students with potential for timely graduation or groups needing more attention to achieve on-time graduation. Empirical validation is performed by comparing K-means prediction results with actual graduation data. Accuracy measurement involves calculating the percentage of similarity between predictions and actual data. Empirical validation results demonstrate the accuracy level, which can serve as a benchmark for assessing the performance of this prediction model. This study aims to provide deeper insights into factors influencing student graduation and potentially support decision-making at the academic level. The Influence of Soft Skills and Adversity Quotient on Work Readiness of Students in the Faculty of Economics at Muhammadiyah University Makassar

Indonesia's optimism to become one of the top 10 world economic powers by 2030. With this target, it is necessary to increase human resources who are ready and globally competitive, especially in higher education institutions. These institutions are expected to produce graduates who are ready for the workforce. However, based on interviews conducted with students of the Faculty of Economics, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar, it has been found that students in the final stages of their studies generally lack optimal preparation for their personal experiences. This is evident from their limited involvement in organizational activities and entrepreneurial ventures. Even when asked about their plans after completing their studies, many students expressed uncertainty and claimed that they were unaware of their future direction. Work readiness must be fostered and developed as early as possible by students to be ready for a career in the future. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Economics, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar. The population in this study was all students at the Faculty of Economics, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar amounted to 5045 from 5 study programs, To obtain a representative sample, sampling was carried out with proportional random sampling techniques with a sample of 371 students. The results showed that: 1) there is a positive influence of soft skills on the job readiness of students of the Faculty of Economics, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar, 2) there is a positive influence of adversity quotient on the job readiness of students of the Faculty of Economics, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar, 3) the influence of soft skills and adversity quotient simultaneously on the job readiness of students of the Faculty of Economics, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar, the magnitude of the influence imultant is 11%.

Identifying Perceptual Learning Styles Preferences on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery

The study's aims were to determine the level of students’ vocabulary mastery, identify the students’ perceptual learning style preferences, and determine the impact of the perceptual learning style preferences on students’ vocabulary mastery. Mixed method research was used in this study. This study included 25 students from MA Muallimin Muhammadiyah Makassar's eleventh grade. The research data were collected using vocabulary test, perceptual learning styles preference questionnaire by Reid (1987), and interview. Likert scale, descriptive statistics, SPSS 26 version, and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze the data. The result of this research showed that (1) The students’ perceptual learning styles preferences was group learning style as a major classification. And the other learning style like visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile and individual were minor classification. (2) The impact of perceptual learning styles preferences on students' vocabulary mastery was that individual learners could focus on memorizing a new vocabulary; group learners could be enthusiastic and motivated to memorize English vocabulary; and auditory learners could help themselves memorize the vocabulary by listening repeatedly. (3) The level of the students’ vocabulary mastery was classified as fair. Based on findings and discussions, it can be concluded that the perceptual learning styles preferences affect the students’ vocabulary mastery. Students felt comfortable and it can help them to master vocabulary if they used their favor learning style.

The Influence of Participation, Motivation and Family Environment on Increasing the Spirit of Entrepreneurship

This research is a descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of partisipation, motivation and family environment partially on increasing the entrepreneurial spirit of students at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar. Data were analyzed use multiple linear regression and analysis using the SPSS version 23. Population are students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar. The samples obtained amounted to 213 using probability sampling techniques. Test the validity of the data using validity and reliability tests. Data were analyzed using the classical assumption test, t test and the coefficient of determination. The research results obtained: 1. Participation has a positive but not significant effect on increasing student entrepreneurial spirit; 2. Motivation has a positive and significant effect on increasing student entrepreneurial spirit; and 3. The family environment has a positive and significant effect on increasing the entrepreneurial spirit of students.
