A Study of Graduate Bulletins to Determine General Information and Graduation Requirements for Master's Degree Programs in Health Education

Abstract A study of 150 college and university graduate bulletins was conducted to determine titles, admission information, and graduation requirements for master's degree programs in health education. Included were 22 schools of public health that offered master's degrees in health education. Findings indicated that the degrees most frequently offered in non-schools of public health were the master of science and master of education degrees. In the schools of public health, it was the MPH degree. The study found a lack of consistency in admission and graduation requirements. A major finding was that there was no health education background required for admission to the program. This was consistent with non-schools of public health as well as schools of public health. The number of semester hours required for graduation in non-schools of public health ranged from 30 to 40 semester hours. Schools of public health ranged from 30 to 36 hours. Jeannette M. Smith, MD, Comes to JAMA as 11th Fishbein Fellow in Medical Journalism

HCFA's LOSS will be<i>JAMA</i>'s gain when Jeannette M. Smith, MD, MPH, leaves her position as an analyst in the Office of Research, Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), to become the 11th Morris Fishbein Fellow in Medical Journalism. The yearlong fellowship honors Morris Fishbein, MD, editor of<i>JAMA</i>for a quarter century (1924 to 1949). Smith received her bachelor of science degree, with honors in biology, from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Mich, in 1977, and her MD degree from Loma Linda (Calif) University School of Medicine in 1981. Feasibility of an Extended MPH Degree Program for fully employed practicing health professionals.

This report describes the first four years of operation of the Extended MPH Degree Program of the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine and the features that might explain its initial success. The format of the curriculum is radically different from the traditional two-year program of studies leading to the master of public health degree. Over a three-year span of intensive, on-campus courses and seminars, students are able to fulfill all academic and institutional requirements necessary for the MPH degree. Many more applicants have enrolled for the Extended Degree Program than for the regular MPH program. The 94 students who have matriculated into the program are employed mainly in government agencies in eight western states and British Columbia; most have their prior professional training in nursing and medicine with a median of nine years professional experience. The academic performance of these students is comparable to that of regular full-time MPH program students. The administrative, fiscal, and instructional problems raised by such a transformation have been overcome and the demand for the program and our experience to date suggest that extended MPH degree programs are both feasible and desirable.

The participation of Hispanics in US schools of Public Health, 1975-79.

Hispanic student and faculty representation at US Schools of Public Health from 1975-1979 was investigated. Findings indicate a substantial underrepresentation of Hispanic students and faculty members at these schools. Hispanic public health graduates were found to be less likely than other graduates to receive an MPH degree or a doctorate. It appears that the University of Puerto Rico graduates one-half of all Hispanic graduates and employs two-thirds of all Hispanic public health faculty.
