Table Tennis Experience Enhances Motor Control in Older Adults: Insights into Sensorimotor-related Cortical Connectivity

BackgroundMotor control declines with age and requires effective connectivity between the sensorimotor cortex and the primary motor cortex (M1). Despite research indicating that physical exercise can improve motor control in older individuals the effect of physical exercise on neural connectivity in older adults remains to be elucidated. MethodsOlder adults with experience in table tennis and fit aerobics and individuals without such experience for comparison were recruited for the study. Differences in motor control were assessed using the stop-signal task. The impact of exercise experience on DLPFC-M1 and pre-SMA-M1 neural connectivity was assessed with transcranial magnetic stimulation. Varied time intervals (short and long term) and stimulus intensities (subthreshold and suprathreshold) were used to explore neural connectivity across pathways. ResultsThe present study showed that behavioral iexpression of the table tennis group was significantly better than the other two groups;The facilitatory regulation of preSMA-M1 in all groups is negatively correlated with SSRT. Regulatory efficiency was highest in the table tennis group. Only the neural network regulatory ability of the Table Tennis group showed a negative correlation with SSRT; Inhibitory regulation of DLPFC-M1 was positively correlated with SSRT; this effect was most robust in the table tennis group. Conclusion: The preliminary findings of this study suggest that table tennis exercise may enhance the motor system regulated by neural networks and stabilize inhibitory regulation of DLPFC-M1, thereby affecting motor control in older adults.

The effect of complex cognitive context on the dynamic stability during gait initiation in older women.

Changes in cognitive control are considered potential factors affecting voluntary motor movements during gait initiation (GI). Simulating environments with higher cognitive resource demands have an effect on the stability of GI task performance, which is of significant importance for assessing fall risk in the older adults and devising fall risk management measures in multiple environments. This study aims to reveal the influence of complex cognitive competitive environment with increased cognitive demands on the dynamic stability during GI in the older women. Twenty-three older females and twenty-three younger females performed walking tests under three conditions: voluntary initiation (SI), visual light reaction time task (LRT), and cognitive interference + visual light reaction time task (C + LRT). Eight cameras (Qualisys, Sweden, model: Oqus 600) and three force plates (Kistler, Switzerland, model: 9287C) are used to obtain kinematic and kinetic data. To recorde the trajectory of center of pressure (CoP) and the position of the foot placement, and compute the anterior-posterior (A-P) and medio-lateral (M-L) dynamic stability at the onset and end moments of the single-leg support by means of center of mass (CoM) and gait spatiotemporal parameters. Older women responded to the effect of complex environments involving cognitive competition on body stability by prolonging the lateral displacement time of the CoP during the anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) phase, reducing step length and velocity, and increasing step width and foot inclination angle. Complex initiation environments lead to competition for cognitive resources in the brain, resulting in decreased stability of GI motor control in older adults. The higher the complexity of the cognitive resource demands environment, the lower the stability of GI in older adults, and the greater the effect on their M-L stability at the onset of stepping.

Smooth pursuit eye movements contribute to anticipatory force control during mechanical stopping of moving objects.

When stopping a closing door or catching an object, humans process the motion of inertial objects and apply reactive limb force over short period to interact with them. One way in which the visual system processes motion is through extraretinal signals associated with smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs). We conducted three experiments to investigate how SPEMs contribute to anticipatory and reactive hand force modulation when interacting with a virtual object moving in the horizontal plane. We hypothesized that SPEM signals are critical for timing motor responses, anticipatory control of hand force, and task performance. Participants held a robotic manipulandum and attempted to stop an approaching simulated object by applying a force impulse (area under force-time curve) that matched the object's virtual momentum upon contact. We manipulated the object's momentum by varying either its virtual mass or its speed under free gaze or constrained gaze conditions. We examined gaze variables, the timing of hand motor responses, anticipatory force control, and overall task performance. Our results show that when participants were fixated at a designated location instead of following objects with SPEM, anticipatory modulation of hand force before contact decreased. However, constraining gaze by asking participants to fixate did not seem to affect the timing of the motor response or the task performance. Together, these results suggest that SPEMs may be important for anticipatory control of hand force before contact and may also play a critical role in anticipatory stabilization of limb posture when humans interact with moving objects.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We show for the first time that smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs) play a role in the modulation of anticipatory control of hand force to stabilize posture against contact forces. SPEMs are critical for tracking moving objects, facilitate processing motion of moving objects, and are impacted during aging and in many neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis. These results provide a novel basis to probe how changes in SPEMs could contribute to deficient limb motor control in older adults and patients with neurological disorders.

Placebo effect on gait: a way to reduce the dual-task cost in older adults

The ability to perform two tasks simultaneously is essential for daily activities. In older adults, this ability is markedly reduced, as evidenced by the dual-task cost on gait. Preliminary evidences indicate that the dual-task cost can be influenced by different types of manipulations. Here, we explored the effectiveness of a new approach to reduce the dual-task cost, based on the placebo effect, a psychobiological phenomenon whereby a positive outcome follows the administration of an inert device thought to be effective. Thirty-five healthy older adults were asked to walk on a sensorized carpet (single-task condition) and to walk while counting backward (dual-task condition) in two sessions (pre-test and post-test). A placebo group, randomly selected, underwent sham transcranial direct current stimulation over the supraorbital areas between sessions, along with information about its positive effects on concentration and attention. A control group did not receive any intervention between sessions. The dual-task cost was significantly reduced in the placebo group at the post-test session compared to the pre-test for several gait parameters (Cohen's d > 1.43). At the post-test session, the dual-task cost was also lower in the placebo group than in the control group (d > 0.73). Cognitive (number of subtractions and number of errors) and subjective (perceived mental fatigability) variables remained stable across sessions. The reduced dual-task cost in the placebo group could indicate the ability to re-establish the allocation of attentional resources between tasks. These findings could contribute to the development of cognitive strategies that leverage positive expectations to boost motor control in older adults.

Bridging cognition and action: executive functioning mediates the relationship between white matter fiber density and complex motor abilities in older adults

Aging may be associated with motor decline that is attributed to deteriorating white matter microstructure of the corpus callosum (CC), among other brain-related factors. Similar to motor functioning, executive functioning (EF) typically declines during aging, with age-associated changes in EF likewise being linked to altered white matter connectivity in the CC. Given that both motor and executive functions rely on white matter connectivity via the CC, and that bimanual control is thought to rely on EF, the question arises whether EF can at least party account for the proposed link between CC-connectivity and motor control in older adults. To address this, diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained from 84 older adults. A fiber-specific approach was used to obtain fiber density (FD), fiber cross-section (FC), and a combination of both metrics in eight transcallosal white matter tracts. Motor control was assessed using a bimanual coordination task. EF was determined by a domain-general latent EF-factor extracted from multiple EF tasks, based on a comprehensive test battery. FD of transcallosal prefrontal fibers was associated with cognitive and motor performance. EF partly accounted for the relationship between FD of prefrontal transcallosal pathways and motor control. Our results underscore the multidimensional interrelations between callosal white matter connectivity (especially in prefrontal brain regions), EF across multiple domains, and motor control in the older population. They also highlight the importance of considering EF when investigating brain-motor behavior associations in older adults.

Cognition may improve with medium‐chain triglyceride oil supplementation: A pilot study

AbstractBackgroundMedium‐chain triglycerides (MCT), unlike other type of fats, are quickly digested into medium‐chain fatty acids (MCFA), which are metabolized by the liver into energy in the form of ketones. Ketones are then transported to the brain for energy supply. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the brain becomes less efficient in glucose uptake and metabolism, resulting in an energy deficiency. The only backup source of energy for the brain is ketones. In this study we examined the potential for MCT to serve as a fuel source during energy deprivation, such as what is observed in AD.MethodHealthy males and females aged 50 to 77 years old (n=19) consumed MCT oil (40% caprylic acid, 28% capric acid, 32% lauric acid) for 7 weeks. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Executive Abilities: Measures and Instruments for Neurobehavioral Evaluation and Research (EXAMINER) neuropsychological battery was administered at baseline, midway and last appointment. Participants could discontinue at any time during the intervention period.ResultDescriptive statistics determined the data were not normally distributed, therefor a non‐parametric Wilcoxon Rank Test was performed to compare cognitive performance at baseline to mid‐way, and baseline to last appointment. Baseline to mid‐way analyses showed significant (α=.05) improvement in performance for the Continual Performance Task (CPT) (p=0.012), N‐Back‐2 (p=0.049), and anti‐saccade (p=0.036). Baseline to last analyses showed significant improvement (α=.05) in performance for the CPT task (p=0.034), N‐Back‐1 (p=0.027), N‐Back‐2 (p=0.038), and saccades (p=0.036). Both the N‐back‐1 and Saccades measures for baseline to mid‐way analyses approached significance. No significant changes were observed in the remaining tasks of the NIH EXAMINER.ConclusionMCT oil may improve working memory, inhibitory processing, problem solving, and motor control in older adults with no currently diagnosed memory problems. However, a further longitudinal study with a larger sample size is required to validate these preliminary results.

Reduced SMA-M1 connectivity in older than younger adults measured using dual-site TMS.

With advancing age comes a decline in voluntary movement control. Growing evidence suggests that an age-related decline in effective connectivity between the supplementary motor area and primary motor cortex (SMA-M1) might play a role in an age-related decline of bilateral motor control. Dual-site transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used to measure SMA-M1 effective connectivity. In the current study, we aimed to (1) replicate previous dual-site TMS research showing reduced SMA-M1 connectivity in older than younger adults and (2) examine whether SMA-M1 connectivity is associated with bilateral motor control in independent samples of younger (n = 30) and older adults (n = 30). SMA-M1 connectivity was measured using dual-site TMS with interstimulus intervals of 6, 7 and 8 ms, and bilateral motor control was measured using the Purdue Pegboard, Four Square Step Test and the Timed Up and Go task. Findings from this study showed that SMA-M1 connectivity was reduced in older than in younger adults, suggesting that the direct excitatory connections between SMA and M1 had reduced efficacy in older than younger adults. Furthermore, greater SMA-M1 connectivity was associated with better bimanual motor control in older adults. Thus, SMA-M1 connectivity in older adults might underpin, in part, the age-related decline in bilateral motor control. These findings contribute to our understanding of age-related declines in motor control and provide a physiological basis for the development of interventions to improve bimanual and bilateral motor control.

Test Re-test Reliability of Dual-site TMS Measures of SMA-M1 Connectivity Differs Across Inter-stimulus Intervals in Younger and Older Adults

Dual-site transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a promising tool to measure supplementary motor area and primary motor cortex (SMA-M1) connectivity in younger and older adults, and could be used to understand the pathophysiology of movement disorders. However, test re-test reliability of dual-site TMS measures of SMA-M1 connectivity has not been established. We examined the reliability of SMA-M1 connectivity using dual-site TMS in two sessions in 30 younger and 30 older adults. For dual-site TMS, a conditioning pulse delivered to SMA (140% of active motor threshold) preceded a test pulse delivered to M1 (intensity that elicited MEPs of ~1 mV) by inter-stimulus intervals (ISI) of 6 ms, 7 ms, and 8 ms. Moderate intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were found for SMA-M1 connectivity at an ISI of 7 ms in younger (ICC: 0.69) and older adults (ICC: 0.68). Poor ICCs were found for SMA-M1 connectivity at ISIs of 6 ms and 8 ms in both age groups (ICC range: 0.01–0.40). We report evidence for stable measures of SMA-M1 connectivity at an ISI of 7 ms in both age groups. These findings are foundational for future research developing evidence-based interventions to strengthen SMA-M1 connectivity to improve bilateral motor control in older adults and populations with movement disorders.

Cognition and action: a latent variable approach to study contributions of executive functions to motor control in older adults.

Aging is associated with profound alterations in motor control that may be exacerbated by age-related executive functioning decline. Executive functions span multiple facets including inhibition (suppressing unwanted response tendencies), shifting (switching between cognitive operations), and updating (managing working memory content). However, comprehensive studies regarding the contributions of single facets of executive functioning to movement control in older adults are still lacking. A battery of nine neuropsychological tasks was administered to n = 92 older adults in order to derive latent factors for inhibition, shifting, and updating by structural equation modeling. A bimanual task was used to assess complex motor control. A sample of n = 26 young adults served as a control group to verify age-related performance differences. In older adults, structural equation models revealed that performance on the most challenging condition of the complex motor task was best predicted by the updating factor and by general executive functioning performance. These data suggest a central role for working memory updating in complex motor performance and contribute to our understanding of how individual differences in executive functioning relate to movement control in older adults.

A combined diffusion-weighted and electroencephalography study on age-related differences in connectivity in the motor network during bimanual performance.

We studied the relationship between age-related differences in inter- and intra-hemispheric structural and functional connectivity in the bilateral motor network. Our focus was on the correlation between connectivity and declined motor performance in older adults. Structural and functional connectivity were estimated using diffusion weighted imaging and resting-state electro-encephalography, respectively. A total of 48 young and older healthy participants were measured. In addition, motor performances were assessed using bimanual coordination tasks. To pre-select regions-of-interest (ROIs), a neural model was adopted that accounts for intra-hemispheric functional connectivity between dorsal premotor area (PMd) and primary motor cortex (M1) and inter-hemispheric connections between left and right M1 (M1L and M1R ). Functional connectivity was determined via the weighted phase-lag index (wPLI) in the source-reconstructed beta activity during rest. We quantified structural connectivity using kurtosis anisotropy (KA) values of tracts derived from diffusion tensor-based fiber tractography between the aforementioned areas. In the group of older adults, wPLI values between M1L -M1R were negatively associated with the quality of bimanual motor performance. The additional association between wPLI values of PMdL --M1L and PMdR -M1L supports that functional connectivity with the left hemisphere mediated (bimanual) motor control in older adults. The correlational analysis between the selected structural and functional connections revealed a strong association between wPLI values in the left intra-hemispheric PMdL -M1L pathway and KA values in M1L -M1R and PMdR -M1L pathways in the group of older adults. This suggests that weaker structural connections in older adults correlate with stronger functional connectivity and, hence, poorer motor performance.

Changes in Balance, Gait and Motor Control Following Treadmill Exercise in Adults with Parkinson’s Disease

Locomotion on an aquatic treadmill or anti-gravity treadmill may be a safe and effective alternative to exercise on a traditional land treadmill in those with Parkinson’s disease as the removal of body weight in these environments may allow the participant to exercise with less concern of falling at higher speeds before reaching volitional fatigue. PURPOSE: To determine the training effects of three different treadmill modalities on dynamic balance, gait, and fine motor control in older adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. METHODS: Ten adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (70 ± 5 years of age) completed 8 exercise sessions (4 weeks, 2x/week) each separately on a land treadmill, aquatic treadmill, and anti-gravity treadmill at 50% body weight. Two weeks separated each intervention and the order was randomized. A 4-week control period occurred at the start of the study in which no treadmill exercise was performed. Each exercise session included a 2-minute warm-up and 30 minutes at a moderate intensity. Before and after each intervention, balance, gait and fine motor control were measured. Dynamic balance and gait were assessed using a Timed-Up-and-Go test and Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA). Fine motor control was assessed with the Purdue Pegboard Test. RESULTS: The gait assessment of the POMA was significant across all time points (p = 0.028). All other variables were statistically similar (p > 0.05) across all time points. CONCLUSION: Exercising on a traditional land treadmill, aquatic treadmill, or anti-gravity treadmill for 60 min/week for 4 weeks at a moderate intensity did not alter balance, gait or fine motor control in adults with Parkinson’s disease.Table: No title available.Values are mean ± s.d. * = main effect for time point (p = 0.028); ATM = aquatic treadmill; AGTM = anti-gravity treadmill; LTM = land treadmill; TUG = timed-up-and-go; POMA = performance oriented mobility assessment; FMC = fine motor control.

Cognitive Resources Necessary for Motor Control in Older Adults Are Reduced by Walking and Coordination Training.

We examined if physical exercise interventions were effective to reduce cognitive brain resources recruited while performing motor control tasks in older adults. Forty-three older adults (63–79 years of age) participated in either a walking (n = 17) or a motor coordination (n = 15) intervention (1 year, 3 times per week) or were assigned to a control group (n = 11) doing relaxation and stretching exercises. Pre and post the intervention period, we applied functional MRI to assess brain activation during imagery of forward and backward walking and during counting backwards from 100 as control task. In both experimental groups, activation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during imagery of forward walking decreased from pre- to post-test (Effect size: −1.55 and −1.16 for coordination and walking training, respectively; Cohen’s d). Regression analysis revealed a significant positive association between initial motor status and activation change in the right DLPFC (R2 = 0.243, F(3,39) = 4.18, p = 0.012). Participants with lowest motor status at pretest profited most from the interventions. Data suggest that physical training in older adults is effective to free up cognitive resources otherwise needed for the control of locomotion. Training benefits may become particularly apparent in so-called dual-task situations where subjects must perform motor and cognitive tasks concurrently.

The relationship between executive function and fine motor control in young and older adults

The present study examined the relationship between executive function (EF) and fine motor control in young and older healthy adults. Participants completed 3 measures of executive function; a spatial working memory (SWM) task, the Stockings of Cambridge task (planning), and the Intra-Dimensional Extra-Dimensional Set-Shift task (set-shifting). Fine motor control was assessed using 3 subtests of the Purdue Pegboard (unimanual, bimanual, sequencing). For the younger adults, there were no significant correlations between measures of EF and fine motor control. For the older adults, all EFs significantly correlated with all measures of fine motor control. Three separate regressions examined whether planning, SWM and set-shifting independently predicted unimanual, bimanual, and sequencing scores for the older adults. Planning was the primary predictor of performance on all three Purdue subtests. A multiple-groups mediation model examined whether planning predicted fine motor control scores independent of participants’ age, suggesting that preservation of planning ability may support fine motor control in older adults. Planning remained a significant predictor of unimanual performance in the older age group, but not bimanual or sequencing performance. The findings are discussed in terms of compensation theory, whereby planning is a key compensatory resource for fine motor control in older adults.

Implicit and Explicit Learning of a Sequential Postural Weight-Shifting Task in Young and Older Adults.

Sequence-specific postural motor learning in a target-directed weight-shifting task in 12 older and 12 young participants was assessed. In the implicit sequence learning condition participants performed a concurrent spatial cognitive task and in the two explicit conditions participants were required to discover the sequence order either with or without the concurrent cognitive task. Participants moved a cursor on the screen from the center location to one of the target locations projected in a semi-circle and back by shifting their center of pressure (CoP) on force plates. During the training the targets appeared in a simple fixed 5-target sequence. Plan-based control (i.e., direction of the CoP displacement in the first part of the target-directed movement) improved by anticipating the sequence order in the implicit condition but not in the explicit dual task condition. Only the young participants were able to use the explicit knowledge of the sequence structure to improve the directional error as indicated by a significant decrease in directional error over practice and an increase in directional error with sequence removal in the explicit single task condition. Time spent in the second part of the movement trajectory to stabilize the cursor on the target location improved over training in both the implicit and explicit sequence learning conditions, for both age groups. These results might indicate that an implicit motor learning method, which holds back explicit awareness of task relevant features, may be desirable for improving plan-based motor control in older adults.

Age-related differences in corticomotor facilitation indicate dedifferentiation in motor planning

Efficient motor control requires motor planning. Age-related changes in motor control are well described, e.g. increased movement variability and greater antagonistic muscle co-activation, as well as less functional and less regional specific brain activation. However, less is known about age-related changes in motor planning. By use of transcranial magnetic stimulation we investigated differences in corticomotor facilitation during motor planning in 17 young (25±3years) and 17 older healthy adults (70±13years) in a delayed movement paradigm for wrist movements. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded for the flexor and extensor carpi radialis during movement preparation of wrist flexion and extension as well as during rest. We found that MEPs were less specifically facilitated during planning in older as compared to younger adults, as indicated by an Age×Condition×Muscle interaction. Young participants showed significantly facilitated MEPs in the respective muscle needed for wrist flexion or extension. By contrast MEPs in older participants were less specifically modulated. We conclude that age relates to dedifferentiated activation of the primary motor cortex already during preparation of distinct movements which might contribute to less efficient motor control in older adults.

Practice improves motor control in older adults by increasing the motor unit modulation from 13 to 30 Hz

Practice of a motor task decreases motor output variability in older adults and is associated with adaptations of discharge activity of single motor units. In this study we were interested in the practice-induced modulation of multiple motor units within 13-30 Hz because theoretically it enhances the timing of active motoneurons. Our purpose, therefore, was to determine the neural adaptation of multiple motor units and related improvements in movement control following practice. Nine healthy older adults (65-85 yr) performed 40 practice trials of a sinusoidal task (0.12 Hz) with their index finger (10° range of motion). Multi-motor unit activity was recorded intramuscularly from the first dorsal interosseus muscle. The mean spike rate (MSR), spike rate variability (CV(ISI)), and frequency modulation (5-60 Hz) of the spike rate were calculated from the multi-motor unit activity and were correlated with movement accuracy and variability of index finger position. A decrease in movement trajectory variability was associated with an increase in MSR (R(2) = 0.58), a decrease in CV(ISI) (R(2) = 0.58), and an increase in total power within a 13- to 30-Hz band (R(2) = 0.48). The increase in total power within a 13- to 30-Hz band was associated significantly (P < 0.005) with an increase in MSR (R(2) = 0.75) and the decrease in CV(ISI) (R(2) = 0.70). We demonstrate that practice-induced improvements in movement control are associated with changes in activity of multiple motor units. These findings suggest that practice-induced improvements in movement steadiness of older adults are associated with changes in the modulation of the motoneuron pool from 13 to 30 Hz.

Size variability of handwriting in healthy Korean older adults

The aim of the present study was to delineate how age-related deterioration affects the handwriting of healthy elderly (HE) subjects. A total of 235 HE (54 males, 181 females) aged 57-91 years participated as subjects in the study. In order to compare the area of handwriting, we divided the participants into two groups: (i) aged 57-74 years; and (ii) aged 75-91 years. The writing stimulus was a four-syllabic word with one-to-one grapheme-to-phoneme correspondence. The size of each syllable in the target word was measured using a software program. Alignment of the word to baseline was assessed using a multiple-choice checklist. As compared with handwriting by the younger group, the older group showed greater variability in the size of the written syllables within the word (P = 0.023). The handwriting was characterized by unequal size among syllables and non-perpendicular alignment, which could be explained by several factors. First, the variability might have resulted from irregular fine movement motor control in older adults. Second, the deterioration of visual feedback and visuomotor integration in normal aging might have affected handwriting performance. In conclusion, variability of handwriting can be sensitive in predicting the aging process.

Formation of cortical plasticity in older adults following tDCS and motor training

Neurodegeneration accompanies the process of natural aging, reducing the ability to perform functional daily activities. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) alters neuronal excitability and motor performance; however its beneficial effect on the induction of primary motor cortex (M1) plasticity in older adults is unclear. Moreover, little is known as to whether the tDCS electrode arrangement differentially affects M1 plasticity and motor performance in this population. In a double-blinded, cross-over trial, we compared unilateral, bilateral and sham tDCS combined with visuomotor tracking, on M1 plasticity and motor performance of the non-dominant upper limb, immediately post and 30 min following stimulation. We found (a) unilateral and bilateral tDCS decreased tracking error by 12–22% at both time points; with sham decreasing tracking error by 10% at 30 min only, (b) at both time points, motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were facilitated (38–54%) and short-interval intracortical inhibition was released (21–36%) for unilateral and bilateral conditions relative to sham, (c) there were no differences between unilateral and bilateral conditions for any measure. These findings suggest that tDCS modulated elements of M1 plasticity, which improved motor performance irrespective of the electrode arrangement. The results provide preliminary evidence indicating that tDCS is a safe non-invasive tool to preserve or improve neurological function and motor control in older adults.

Magnified visual feedback exacerbates positional variability in older adults due to altered modulation of the primary agonist muscle

The purpose of this study was to determine whether magnified visual feedback during position-holding contractions exacerbates the age-associated differences in motor output variability due to changes in the neural activation of the agonist muscle in the upper and lower limb. Twelve young (18-35years) and ten older adults (65-85years) were instructed to accurately match a target position at 5° of index finger abduction and ankle dorsiflexion while lifting 10% of their 1 repetition maximum (1RM) load. Position was maintained at three different visual angles (0.1°, 1°, and 4°) that varied across trials. Each trial lasted 25s and visual feedback of position was removed from 15 to 25s. Positional error was quantified as the root mean square error (RMSE) of the subject's performance from the target. Positional variability was quantified as the standard deviation of the position data. The neural activation of the first dorsal interosseus and tibialis anterior was measured with surface electromyography (EMG). Older adults were less accurate compared with young adults and the RMSE decreased significantly with an increase in visual gain. As expected, and independent of limb, older adults exhibited significantly greater positional variability compared with young adults that was exacerbated with magnification of visual feedback (1° and 4°). This increase in variability at the highest magnification of visual feedback was predicted by a decrease in power from 12 to 30Hz of the agonist EMG signal. These findings demonstrate that motor control in older adults is impaired by magnified visual feedback during positional tasks.

Aging and Variability of Voluntary Contractions

Older adults exhibit greater motor variability, which impairs their accuracy and function, compared with young adults. Low-intensity training that emphasizes muscle coordination reduces variability in older adults. Furthermore, a low amount of visual feedback minimizes age-associated differences in variability. We hypothesize that an intervention that combines muscle coordination and reduced visual feedback would be advantageous to improve motor control in older adults.
