Subclinical variability in visual function modulates visual dependence - independent of age

AbstractParadoxically visual dependence is reported to increase with age, contributing to falls risk, whereas visual function typically declines. This study assesses the relationship between age, objective and subjective measures of visual function and visual dependence, in healthy young and older adults. Forty-four healthy Young (YA; n = 32; 18 males, aged 26.2 ± 5.3 yrs.) and Older (OA; n = 12; 3 males, aged 62.4 ± 6.7 yrs.) adults were assessed for objective (visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, depth perception, and lower peripheral vision), and subjective visual function (VFQ-25) along with motion sickness susceptibility. Subjective Visual Vertical (SVV) and induced nausea and vection were assessed using the Rod and Disc Test (RDT). Groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U, whilst determinants of SVV variability were evaluated using Multiple regression modelling. Visual acuity (p < 0.01) and contrast sensitivity (p = 0.04) were lower in OA. Visual dependence (SVV tilt errors) was not associated with ageing (p = 0.46). YA experienced greater RDT-induced vection (p = 0.03). Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity accounted for modest proportions of variance in SVV tilt errors (VA; R2 = 0.14, F(1,42) = 8.00, p < 0.01; β = 6.37) and (CS; R2 = 0.06, F(1,42) = 3.93, p = 0.05; β = −4.97), respectively. Our findings suggest that subclinical differences in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity contribute to SVV tilt error variability, among both healthy young and older adults. Further studies are needed to define the inter-relationship between age-related visual function, non-visual factors (including vestibular and somatosensory fidelity, activity levels, fear of falling and cognitive function) and visual dependence.

Sex and Age Differences in Virtual Reality (VR) Sickness Susceptibility in Forklift Driving Simulation

Traditional forklift training methods are limited by their time-consuming nature and high costs. Virtual reality (VR) simulators have emerged as a cost-effective and safe alternative for forklift driving training. However, previous research revealed a substantial challenge associated with VR experiences, specifically concerning motion sickness during forklift training. Motion sickness poses a significant challenge to the effectiveness and user experience in VR forklift simulations. The primary objective of this research is to examine the influence of sex and age on motion sickness susceptibility within a virtual reality forklift simulation. Twenty individuals (nine females, eleven males) participated in the study and completed several driving tasks in a VR forklift simulator. Survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier) and Cox Proportional Hazards models examined sex and age differences in VR sickness. Age was the only significant predictor. The effects of age on motion sickness susceptibility highlight the need for tailored approaches in VR development and training.

Increased Perception of Head Tilt to Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation Correlates to Motion Sickness Susceptibility in Vestibular Migraine.

Vestibular migraine is associated with vertigo, persistent swaying, tilting, and disorientation, which suggests a heightened sensitivity of the neural mechanisms subserving spatial orientation. Whether a heightened sense of motion to vestibular stimulation in vestibular migraine is associated with sensitivity to visual motion (visual dependency) or physical motion (motion sickness susceptibility) is unclear. The aim of this study was to explore whether a heightened sense of self-motion sensitivity in vestibular migraine is associated with visual dependency or motion sickness susceptibility. This is a prospective cross-over study. Fifteen participants with vestibular migraine and 20 healthy controls (all right handed) were included in this study. In the main experiment, participants were asked to align a rod to the perceived head position. Head tilt was generated by DC galvanic vestibular stimulation at 1 mA to produce head tilts to the right (left anodal/right cathodal stimulation, LA/RC) or left (right anodal/left cathodal, RA/LC). The perception of head tilt was measured in a dark room using laptop software that allowed participants to turn an illuminated rod to any angle about the midpoint. Participants were instructed to align the rod to the perceived head position before and during galvanic stimulation and the line angle was saved. Head position was objectively monitored with an ultrasound motion system. After completing the perceptual test, visual dependency was measured with a static and rotating background and the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ) was completed. In an upright head position, without stimulation, the perceived head position was 1.1 degrees in controls and -0.69 degrees in vestibular migraine participants with no significant difference between groups. During galvanic vestibular stimulation, participants with vestibular migraine had an increased perception of head tilt compared with controls (RA/LC: controls -4.7 degrees and vestibular migraine -9.29, p = 0.002; and LA/RC: controls 6.5 degrees and vestibular migraine 11.12 degrees, p = 0.017), although the size of head movement was similar between groups. The average perception of head tilt correlated to the MSSQ score, but not to the degree of visual dependency in a static or moving background. A heightened sensitivity of the vestibular system to vestibular stimulation in vestibular migraine is consistent with reports of self-motion sensitivity in vestibular migraine.

Motion sickness and visual impairment

Motion sickness (MS) is caused by exposure to unfamiliar movements. The theory is that MS is due to a conflict between information perceived by the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems. This study examines the role of vision in MS by comparing MS susceptibility among individuals with varying degrees of visual impairments to sighted individuals. We hypothesized that subjects with no perception of light would be less susceptible to MS than less impaired subjects, who would themselves be less susceptible than sighted subjects. To address these, the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ1) was administered to 340 subjects (170 visually impaired paired with 170 sighted subjects) to assess their susceptibility to various modes of transport under real conditions. Visually impaired subjects were divided into subgroups according to the presence (partially sighted) or absence (totally blind) of light perception, as well as the period of onset of impairment (congenital or acquired). Totally blind individuals are significantly less susceptible to MS than partially sighted (p = 0.001), and sighted (p < 0.001) subjects, with no difference between partially sighted and sighted subjects (p = 0.526). Additionally, acquired totally blind subjects are less susceptible to MS than congenitally blind subjects (p = 0.038). Thus, despite a lower susceptibility totally blind subjects may still be susceptible to MS. The absence of vision reduces MS susceptibility but does not completely prevent it. This suggests that vision is more a mediator, than an essential condition for MS appearance.

Visuospatial Training Does Not Reduce Motion Sickness Susceptibility

Smyth et al. (2021) reported the results of a driving study which they interpreted as suggesting that working on visuospatial problems is an effective method to reduce the susceptibility to motion sickness while they also mentioned that the reason as to why this should be the case is unknown. Here we present a conceptual replication of their study using a much larger sample size than that of the original study. A 30-minute simulated drive in a virtual environment was used to induce motion sickness. During the subsequent 14 days, participants in the visuospatial-training group, but not participants in the no-training group, worked on visuospatial problems for 15 minutes a day, as in the original study. Participants then returned to the laboratory for their second 30-minute simulated drive. Motion sickness severity was substantially reduced from the first to the second drive, but the visuospatial training did not significantly affect this reduction in motion sickness. We conclude that working on visuospatial problems does not reduce the susceptibility to motion sickness.

Neuro-ophthalmic and Neuro-otologic Evaluation in Individuals with Motion Sickness Susceptibility.

Since the physiological background of motion sickness is not entirely clear, it was aimed to examine the physiological differences in groups consisting of individuals susceptible and non-susceptible to motion sickness. Sixty subjects [motion sickness (MS) group: 33 female, 3 male; 28.8 ± 8.1 years; control group: 19 female, 5 male; 24.5 ± 4.3 years] were included in the study. Near visual acuity test on the treadmill in the presence of visual stimulation, pattern visual-evoked potentials, oculomotor tests, and computerized dynamic posturography were applied. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine the parameter that provides the excellent discrimination between the groups. The most effective parameter in differentiating the study groups was determined as dynamic visual acuity with 77.8% sensitivity and 95.8% specificity. Significant differences were found in the vestibular (mean ± standard deviation: 0.63 ± 0.17), visual (0.77 ± 0.18), and composite scores (73.11 ± 11.89) of the patients (P=.000) in posturographic evaluation. In the visual-evoked potential examination, a significant decrease was found in the amplitude values between the P100-N145 waves in the binocular (5.0 ± 2.8, P=.002), right eye (7.6 ± 3.2, P=.009) and left eye (7.9 ± 2.9, P=.016) in the symptomatic patients. In binocular oculomotor evaluation, directional asymmetric findings were obtained. It has been shown that the most effective test parameter that distinguishes the MS susceptible and non-susceptible individuals is the dynamic visual acuity value. Based on the results of neuro-physiological tests, it was suggested that a possible visual-vestibular integration disorder in individuals susceptible to motion sickness may affect visual and vestibular performance.

THE PREVALENCE OF MOTION SICKNESS IN YOUNG ADULTS OF MYSORE, KARNATAKA

Background: Motion sickness is a common condition characterized by symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and vomiting, triggered by movements during travel or other activities. Despite its impact across all ages, there is lack of studies in the prevalence among 18– 28 years individuals.Understanding its effects on the quality of life and productivity is crucial for developing effective interventions. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of motion sickness among age 18 –28 years. Methods:A convenient sampling approach was employed, involving 562 participants (463 females, 99 males), aged 18 - 28 years from various departments of JSSAHER. Participants completed the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ) short form to assess their susceptibility. Additionally, the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ) was administered at the end of travel to evaluate the severity of symptoms experienced by them. Results:In this study of 562 participants (463 females, 99 males), 71.4% mild, 27.8% moderate, and 0.9% severe. The mean age was 19.89 years. There was no significant association between gender and motion sickness severity (p = 0.264), but age showed a significant correlation with motion sickness severity (p = 0.014). Linear regression indicated a weak positive relationship between age and motion sickness score (Beta = 0.196, p &lt; 0.05), explaining 3.9% of the score variability. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of motion sickness that impacts young adults quality of life and occupational performance. Currently, there is no permanent solution, highlighting further research and intervention strategies.

Development and evaluation of the simplified Chinese versions of motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire

Objective: To develop and evaluate the simplified Chinese versions of motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire (MSSQ)-long (MSSQ-L) and MSSQ-short (MSSQ-S). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2023 among 3 426 university students at North China University of Science and Technology. The Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S were distributed, and item selection for Simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S was performed based on item response rates, item-total correlations, Cronbach's alpha coefficients, and standard deviations. Forty-five male and forty-five female participants were recruited from the initial survey population to complete Coriolis acceleration endurance testing and fill out the simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S, and Graybiel symptom severity score questionnaire. Internal consistency, external consistency, criterion validity, discriminant validity, and predictive accuracy for motion sickness severity were assessed. Results: A total of 3 111 valid responses were received for the Chinese versions of MSSQ, yielding an effective response rate of 90.8% (3 111/3 426). Among the 3 111 students surveyed, there were 965 males and 2 146 females, with a mean age of (19.5±1.4) years. The highest usage rates for item were observed for cars (98.9%, 3 077/3 111) and buses (98.8%, 3 073/3 111). The simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S consisted of four and eight items, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.900 and 0.953 for the simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-S and MSSQ-L, respectively, with test-retest reliabilities of 0.895 and 0.908. Criterion validity coefficients were 0.814 and 0.765 for the simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-S and MSSQ-L, respectively. In terms of discriminant validity, significant differences were observed between mild and moderate susceptibility groups [0(0, 3) vs 6(2, 10), P=0.006] and between moderate and severe susceptibility groups [6(2, 10) vs 9(6, 13), P=0.030] for the simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-S. Significant differences were also observed between mild and moderate susceptibility groups [5(0, 3) vs 7(3, 10), P=0.001], but not between moderate and severe susceptibility groups [7(3, 10) vs 7(3, 10), P=0.081] for simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-L. The overall predictive accuracy for motion sickness severity improved from 55.6% (50/90) to 62.2% (56/90) for the simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-S and from 54.4% (49/90) to 58.9% (53/90) for the simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-L, but with no statistically significant differences (both P>0.05). Conclusions: The simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S demonstrates good reliability and validity. The simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-S exhibits satisfactory discriminant validity, and can serve as a simple and efficient tool for assessing motion sickness susceptibility.

Visual vertigo and motion sickness is different between persistent postural-perceptual dizziness and vestibular migraine

IntroductionPersistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and vestibular migraine (VM) share symptoms of visual vertigo and motion sickness that can be confusing for clinicians to distinguish. We compare the severity of these symptoms and dynamic subjective visual vertical (dSVV) in these two common vestibular conditions. MethodTwenty-nine patients with PPPD, 37 with VM, and 29 controls were surveyed for subjective symptoms using the visual vertigo analogue scale (VVAS) and motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire during childhood (MSA) and the past 10 years (MSB). dSVV is a measure of visual dependence measures perception of verticality against a rotating background (5 deg./s). ResultsVVAS revealed contextual differences for dizziness between those with PPPD and VM. Ratings of visual vertigo were most severe in PPPD, less in VM, and mild in controls (VVAS PPPD 27.1, VM 11.2, control 4.6, p < 0.001). MSA was more severe in VM than in PPPD or control (12.8 vs 7.6 vs 8.5, p = 0.01). MSB was more severe in VM than controls (MSB score 12.9 VS 8.1 p = 0.009) but was not different than PPPD (MSB score 10.0, p = 0.10). dSVV alignment was similar among the three groups (p = 0.83). Both VM and PPPD groups had greater simulator sickness than controls after completing the dSVV. ConclusionsPatients with PPPD report more visual vertigo than those with VM, but a history of motion sickness as a child is more common in VM. Additionally, the environmental context that induces visual vertigo is different between PPPD and VM.

Evaluation of semicircular canal and otolith graviceptive pathway function in patients diagnosed with motion sickness disorder based on the diagnostic criteria of the Bárány society

Objective: To investigate the altered function of the semicircular canal and otolith graviceptive pathway in patients diagnosed with motion sickness disorder (MSD) based on the diagnostic criteria of the Bárány society, and explore its relevance to the pathogenesis of MSD. Methods: This is a case-control study. Twenty patients with MSD and age-and sex-matched healthy controls without a history of MSD from the Department of Neurology of Aerospace Center Hospital between March and August 2022 were recruited. All subjects completed the motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire-short version (MSSQ-short) and the motion sickness assessment questionnaire (MSAQ). Canal function was evaluated using caloric stimulation test and video head impulse test (vHIT), and subjective visual vertical/horizontal (SVV/SVH) and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) were employed to assess otolith graviceptive function. Differences in vestibular function and correlations between the two groups were analyzed. Results: Each group consisted of 20 cases (9 males and 11 females). The mean age of the MSD and control groups was (26.9±3.9) years and (27.0±3.4) years, respectively. The scores of MSSQ-short [27.0 (22.5, 38.8) vs 1.2 (0, 3.2), P<0.001] and MSAQ [70.1 (54.5, 78.1) vs 11.8 (11.1, 13.9), P<0.001] were significantly higher in the MSD group compared with those of the control group. Evaluation of canal function revealed a significantly higher incidence of caloric stimulation intolerance in MSD patients (60.0%, 12/20) compared with that of the control group (20.0%, 4/20) (P=0.010). Evaluation of otolith graviceptive pathway indicated no significant difference in SVV, SVH and cervical VEMP (cVEMP) abnormality rates between the two groups (all P>0.05). The ocular VEMP (oVEMP) abnormality rate was significantly higher in the MSD group (55.0%, 11/20) than that of the control group (10.0%, 2/20) (P=0.002), with a delayed P1-wave latency compared with the control group [(18.4±1.2) ms vs (17.6±0.8) ms, P=0.018]. Further correlation analysis revealed that P1-wave latency in oVEMP was positively correlated with MSSQ-short (r=0.486, P=0.002) and MSAQ (r=0.391, P=0.015) scores, and duration of caloric intolerance symptoms (r=0.377, P=0.004). Conclusion: The presence of hypersensitivity to caloric stimulation and delayed latency of otolith function in patients with MSD suggests a "separation" between semicircular canal and otolithic function, which may be related to sensory conflict.

Spatial anxiety contributes to the dizziness-related handicap of adults with peripheral vestibular disease.

In subjects with peripheral vestibular disease and controls, we assessed: 1. The relationship between spatial anxiety and perceived stress, and 2. The combined contribution of spatial anxiety, spatial perspective-taking, and individual cofactors to dizziness-related handicap. 309 adults participated in the study (153 with and 156 without peripheral vestibular disease), including patients with bilateral vestibular deficiency, unilateral deficiency (evolution <3 or ≥3 months), Meniere's disease, and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Assessments included: general health, personal habits, spatial anxiety (3-domains), perceived stress, spatial perspective-taking, dizziness-related handicap (3-domains), unsteadiness, sleep quality, motion sickness susceptibility, trait anxiety/depression, state anxiety, depersonalization/derealization. After bivariate analyses, analysis of covariance was performed (p ≤ 0.05). Spatial anxiety was related to unsteadiness and perceived stress, with an inverse relationship with trait anxiety (ANCoVA, adjusted R2 = 0.27-0.30, F = 17.945-20.086, p < 0.00001). Variability on perspective-taking was related to vestibular disease, trait and state anxiety, motion sickness susceptibility, and age (ANCoVA, adjusted R2 = 0.18, F = 5.834, p < 0.00001). All domains of spatial anxiety contributed to the Physical domain of dizziness-related handicap, while the Navigation domain contributed to the Functional domain of handicap. Handicap variability was also related to unsteadiness, spatial perspective-taking, quality of sleep, and trait anxiety/depression (ANCoVA, adjusted R2 = 0.66, F = 39.07, p < 0.00001). Spatial anxiety is related to perceived stress in adults both with and without vestibular disease, subjects with trait anxiety rated lower on spatial anxiety. State anxiety and acute stress could be helpful for recovery after peripheral vestibular lesion. Spatial anxiety and perspective-taking contribute to the Physical and Functional domains of dizziness-related handicap, possibly because it discourages behavior beneficial to adaptation.

Motion Sickness in Mixed-Reality Situational Awareness System

This research focuses on enhancing the user experience within a Mixed-Reality Situational Awareness System (MRSAS). The study employed the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) in order to gauge and quantify the user experience and to compare the effects of changes to the system. As the results of SSQ are very dependant on inherent motion sickness susceptibility, the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSQ) was used to normalize the results. The experimental conditions were tested on a simulated setup which was also compared to its real-life counterpart. This simulated setup was adjusted to best match the conditions found in the real system by using post-processing effects. The test subjects in this research primarily consisted of 17–28 years old university students representing both male and female genders as well as a secondary set with a larger age range but predominantly male. In total, there were 41 unique test subjects in this study. The parameters that were analyzed in this study were the Field of View (FoV) of the headset, the effects of peripheral and general blurring, camera distortions, camera white balance and users adaptability to VR over time. All of the results are presented as the average of multiple user results and as scaled by user MSQ. The findings suggest that SSQ scores increase rapidly in the first 10–20 min of testing and level off at around 40–50 min. Repeated exposure to VR reduces MS buildup, and a FoV of 49–54 is ideal for a MRSAS setup. Additionally camera based effects like lens distortion and automatic white balance had negligible effests on MS. In this study a new MSQ based SSQ normalization technique was also developed and utilized for comparison. While the experiments in this research were primarily conducted with the goal of improving the physical Vegvisir system, the results themselves may be applicable for a broader array of VR/MR awareness systems and can help improve the UX of future applications.

The role of lifestyle factors, biological sex, and racial identity for (visually induced) motion sickness susceptibility: Insights from an online survey

Motion sickness (MS) and visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) are common side-effects when travelling or when using visual devices, respectively. A variety of individual factors may determine one’s susceptibility to MS/VIMS. Here, the role of lifestyle factors including video-game usage, physical activity, diet, and substance use on self-reported susceptibility to MS/VIMS was investigated. Additionally, the roles of biological sex and racial identity on the overall prevalence of MS/VIMS were analyzed. A total of 711 responses to an online survey were collected from adults between the ages of 17–49 years. Methods of analyses included correlations, comparison tests, and multiple regressions. The results showed that, overall, VIMS is a prevalent issue for most participants, with approximately 24 % of users reporting nausea at least sometimes when using visual displays. Although some lifestyle factors (video game usage, assorted dietary elements) were identified as potentially relevant for MS/VIMS susceptibility, these factors only explained a minimal amount of the variance in MS/VIMS susceptibility. Significant sex differences were found, with female participants reporting higher susceptibility for MS/VIMS than male participants. Additionally, East Asians participants reported higher MS susceptibility. Our findings do not suggest that lifestyle factors are prominent predictors for the susceptibility of VIMS and MS.

Relationship between Car-Sickness Susceptibility and Postural Activity: Could the Re-Weighting Strategy between Signals from Different Body Sensors Be an Underlying Factor?

Postural control characteristics have been proposed as a predictor of Motion Sickness (MS). However, postural adaptation to sensory environment changes may also be critical for MS susceptibility. In order to address this issue, a postural paradigm was used where accurate orientation information from body sensors could be lost and restored, allowing us to infer sensory re-weighting dynamics from postural oscillation spectra in relation to car-sickness susceptibility. Seventy-one participants were standing on a platform (eyes closed) alternating from static phases (proprioceptive and vestibular sensors providing reliable orientation cues) to sway referenced to the ankle-angle phases (proprioceptive sensors providing unreliable orientation cues). The power spectrum density (PSD) on a 10 s sliding window was computed from the antero-posterior displacement of the center of pressure. Energy ratios (ERs) between the high (0.7-1.3 Hz) and low (0.1-0.7 Hz) frequency bands of these PSDs were computed on key time windows. Results showed no difference between MS and non-MS participants following loss of relevant ankle proprioception. However, the reintroduction of reliable ankle signals led, for the non-MS participants, to an increase of the ER originating from a previously up-weighted vestibular information during the sway-referenced situation. This suggests inter-individual differences in re-weighting dynamics in relation to car-sickness susceptibility.

Cybersickness in Virtual Reality: The Role of Individual Differences, Its Effects on Cognitive Functions and Motor Skills, and Intensity Differences during and after Immersion

Background: Given that VR is used in multiple domains, understanding the effects of cybersickness on human cognition and motor skills and the factors contributing to cybersickness is becoming increasing important. This study aimed to explore the predictors of cybersickness and its interplay with cognitive and motor skills. Methods: 30 participants, 20–45 years old, completed the MSSQ and the CSQ-VR, and were immersed in VR. During immersion, they were exposed to a roller coaster ride. Before and after the ride, participants responded to the CSQ-VR and performed VR-based cognitive and psychomotor tasks. After the VR session, participants completed the CSQ-VR again. Results: Motion sickness susceptibility, during adulthood, was the most prominent predictor of cybersickness. Pupil dilation emerged as a significant predictor of cybersickness. Experience with videogaming was a significant predictor of cybersickness and cognitive/motor functions. Cybersickness negatively affected visuospatial working memory and psychomotor skills. Overall the intensity of cybersickness’s nausea and vestibular symptoms significantly decreased after removing the VR headset. Conclusions: In order of importance, motion sickness susceptibility and gaming experience are significant predictors of cybersickness. Pupil dilation appears to be a cybersickness biomarker. Cybersickness affects visuospatial working memory and psychomotor skills. Concerning user experience, cybersickness and its effects on performance should be examined during and not after immersion.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonism reduces motion sickness indicators in mouse migraine models.

Migraine and vestibular migraine are disorders associated with a heightened motion sensitivity that provoke symptoms of motion-induced nausea and motion sickness. VM affects ∼3% of adults in the USA and affects three-fold more women than men. Triptans (selective serotonin receptor agonists) relieve migraine pain but lack efficacy for vertigo. Murine models of photophobia and allodynia have used injections of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or other migraine triggers, such as sodium nitroprusside (SNP), to induce migraine sensitivities in mice to touch and light. Yet, there is limited research on whether these triggers affect motion-induced nausea in mice, and whether migraine blockers can reduce these migraine symptoms. We hypothesized that systemic delivery of CGRP or SNP will increase motion sickness susceptibility and motion-induced nausea in mouse models, and that migraine blockers can block these changes induced by systemically delivered CGRP or SNP. We investigated two measures of motion sickness assessment [motion sickness index (MSI) scoring and motion-induced thermoregulation] after intraperitoneal injections of either CGRP or SNP in C57BL/6J mice. The drugs olcegepant, sumatriptan and rizatriptan were used to assess the efficacy of migraine blockers. MSI measures were confounded by CGRP's effect on gastric distress. However, analysis of tail vasodilatations as a surrogate for motion-induced nausea was robust for both migraine triggers. Only olcegepant treatment rescued tail vasodilatations. These preclinical findings support the use of small molecule CGRP receptor antagonists for the treatment of motion-induced nausea of migraine, and show that triptan therapeutics are ineffective against motion-induced nausea of migraine.Trial Registration: Not Applicable.

One simple question detects motion sickness susceptibility in migraine patients

ObjectiveTo find out if motion sickness susceptibility (MSS) of vestibular migraine (VM) patients and migraine only (MO) patients can be reliably detected with a single simple question: “Can you read while travelling in a car without getting motion sick?”. MethodNinety-two definite VM and 58 MO patients and 74 healthy control (HC) subjects were asked about their MSS and about being able to read while riding in a car without becoming motion sick. A Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ-Short) including childhood (MSA), adulthood (MSB) and total (MST) parts was also administered to all participants. ROC curves of MSSQ-Short were prepared for “not being able to read in a car” as the gold standard. ResultsMean MSA scores were significantly higher in both VM and MO patients than in HCs (p < 0.001), but their scores were not significantly different (p = 0.171). Mean MSB and MST scores were significantly higher in VM than in MO patients (p < 0.001) and both VM and MO patients had significantly higher scores than HCs (p < 0.001). MSA scores were significantly higher than MSB scores in MO patients (p < 0.001). All sections of the questionnaire were associated with high area-under-curve values for MSS detected by the question about being able to read in a car without becoming motion sick. ConclusionWe propose that all migraine patients could have the same level of MSS in childhood but MO patients are able to compensate over years, but VM patients are not. A quick way to determine MSS is to ask about the ability to read without becoming motion sickness while riding a car.

Seasickness susceptibility and the vestibular time constant: a prospective study.

Human passive motion during boat, car or airplane travel may trigger motion sickness. Seasickness is the most provoking manifestation of motion sickness. It imposes major constraints on quality of life and human performance. Based on seasickness susceptibility the population is usually categorized into susceptible (S) and non-susceptible (NS). During repeated exposure some susceptible individuals undergo habituation and obtain symptoms relief, reflecting a third group of habituating (H) individuals. Recently, accumulative evidence suggests that the vestibular time constant (Tc) is associated with motion sickness susceptibility and attenuation of symptoms. These studies demonstrated that repeated passive motion stimuli lead to temporary short-term (days) changes in Tc, whereas sea sickness habituation process lasts 3 to 6months. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to examine the behavior of Tc during the entire span of the seasickness habituation process between the H, S and NS groups to find an objective test for seasickness severity prediction. Tc of 30 subjects was prospectively evaluated pre, 3 and 6months post exposure to sea environment using a computerized rotatory chair system protocol. Seasickness severity was evaluated by Wiker questionnaire. Significantly shorter Tc was found in the S group compared with the NS and H groups. Further analysis revealed lower maximal Slow Phase Velocity (mSPV) and nystagmus frequency (total number of beats/second) in the S group. Our results suggest that Tc, mSPV and nystagmus frequency might serve as a prediction for seasickness severity. Motion Sickness Susceptibility Among Malaysians When Travelling in a Moving Vehicle

Motion sickness is a common problem when travelling in a moving vehicle, especially on land transportation. This occurrence would signify when users are exposed to unexpected movement in an obstructed view. Each user can experience a different level of motion sickness, depending on their susceptibility. This paper aims to study the motion sickness susceptibility among Malaysians using Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaires (MSSQ-Short). A total of 252 Malaysians (146 males and 106 females) completed a set of questionnaires. The questionnaire was distributed through electronic means such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and email and consisted of demographic, MSSQ-Short, travel experience as a driver and passenger, and seating position. This study provides a correlation between experiencing motion sickness between childhood and adulthood (r = 0.124, p &lt; 0.05) for the Malaysian sample. This study concludes that Malaysian susceptibility is higher compared to other countries.
