Motion Pictures in Adult Education.

Commercial Motion Picture Production with 16-mm Equipment

Improvements in film characteristics together with progress in film laboratory technic and in 16-mm sound recording during the past few years have made it possible to produce sound motion pictures directly on 16-mm film with both picture and sound quality comparable to the results obtained in the past by optical reduction from 35-mm negatives, and at considerably reduced cost. This method is of special value in the production of training films and other types of industrial and educational motion pictures requiring much of the photography to be done away from studio facilities. — This paper discusses the apparatus available for direct 16-mm production, the film types that are in use, the film laboratory services that are available, and the methods that are used by direct 16-mm producers in the cases where these methods differ from those of the 35-mm producer. Particular attention is given to the Kodachrome process as used in commercial motion picture production.

A brief survey is made of the history of motion pictures in education and their use as a teaching aid; the present status of 16-mm sound pictures and projectors in schools; types of educational pictures available and their sources; the distinction between auditorium and classroom films; types and sources of auditorium films currently used; types and sources of classroom films; cost of films; their acceptability by teacher groups and coöperation of non-profit educational groups toward creation of adequate classroom libraries; and a plan is suggested for an educational-film-producing organization to meet school needs.

The evolution of mechanical aids to learning is traced briefly, and the advantages of the motion picture in overcoming limitations to learning are discussed. Experiments for testing the efficiency of silent and sound pictures as media of instruction are cited. — Reference is made to some of the problems that must be solved before educational motion pictures can be used more widely in formal public instruction. Suggestions are made for measuring objectively the effects of sound motion picture elements upon the observer by means of mechanical recordings and detailed study of the individual.

The Use of Motion Pictures in Education

The extensive use of motion pictures in the schools is a very recent development. Experiments on the production of motion pictures, having for their purpose to convey scientific information, were undertaken in the early stages of the industry. Since the invention of motion pictures, numerous attempts have been made to produce educational films on a large scale and introduce them into the schools. The use of motion pictures in the schools, however, has not by any means kept pace with their use in the theater. While theatrical motion pictures have grown until they constitute one of the most extensive forms of recreation of the American people, educational motion pictures are still on trial, and are used only to supplement, in a limited and irregular way, the usual forms of instruction.
