Family therapy is being expanded into work with families within their communities. The eco-structural model, applying an ecological perspective to structural family therapy, was first described in “The Family-school interview: An eco-structural approach” in Family Process in 1976. In the clinical illustration offered in that article the focus was primarily on the interface between a family and a school, highlighting the impact on the school. This article presents a second case example, but this time with the spotlight on the family while, indeed, changes are also being wrought on a mother's relationship with a community agency that stands as a bridge between her and her daughter. The article includes some further observations about the theory and application of the eco-structural model.
