Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, the sickling trait, and malaria in Saudi Arab children

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency and the sickling trait occur at high frequency among the Shia Moslem population in the oases of Eastern Saudi Arabia, an area known for previous high prevalence of falciparum malaria. Studies of the population genetics of the two red-cell defects indicate considerable local variation in the frequency of the sickling trait, a very high frequency of G-6-PD deficiency among subjects with the sickling trait, and evidence of heterogeneity in the expression of the enzyme defect among male subjects which is best defined in those with the sickling trait. These data, together with historical evidence, suggest that the sickling trait, and probably the Negro G-6-PD mutation, were introduced into the Saudi Arab populations by the Persian Gulf slave trade, and that G-6-PD deficiency in Saudi Arabia represents an admixture of Negro and Caucasian mutants.

Population Dynamics in Asia: A Research Focus on the Future -- The Indian Subcontinent

When political independence was gained by the huge population of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, two large nations were formed, India and Pakistan. Then their combined populations numbered just over 410 million (339 million in India, and about 73.6 million in Paistan). Today their combined populations number 610 million (about 495 million in India, and 115 million in Pakistan). The division of the population of the subcontinent into two nations was primarily along religious lines, with Islam being the principal religion in Pakistan and Hinduism that of India. Pakistan was formed from two areas having large concentrations of Moslem populations. But these areas are separated by more than 1,000 miles of Indian territory; thus, Pakistan has a very curious geography. Communication between the wings is by expensive air and rail routes across Northern India or by a 2,600-mile sea route through the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Nor is it only distance that divides Pakistan. West Pakistan is a land of rugged mountains and river valleys, much of it very arid, sparsely-settled desert where the summer temperature reaches 120'F. Water and irrigation are the keys to settlement in the West. East Pakistan, on the other hand, is a vast delta area, extremely wet, with up to 100 inches of rainfall during the monsoon season. Even during the dry season much of East Pakistan is under water. During the rainy season extensive transportation is possible only by boat or by air. West Pakistan has almost six times as much territory (310,403 square miles) but only a little more than four-fifths as much population (43 million in 1961) as East Pakistan (55,126 square miles and 50.9 million people). The peoples of East and West Pakistan are united by a common religious bond, but they differ in racial characteristics, diet, dress, language, and manners. Although there are great diversities between the people in the East and West wings of Pakistan in the matters of climate, custom and language, perhaps more important is the uniformity in their tie to the land, low economic development, illiteracy, poor and ill-balanced diet, and lack of adequate communication, transportation and health facilities. In India there is also the sad face of poverty, a picture of people poorly housed, poorly clothed, often living and sleeping on the streets in misery, squalor, and wretchedness. These vague, inadequate, and perhaps misleading images are changing rapidly under the impact of India's efforts to raise her pitifully low levels of living, to cast aside the bonds of poverty,

Notes on the Demography of Algeria

For the demographer the statistics on the population of Algeria possess a special interest. From them he may follow over more than a century the adjustment to an inhospitable environment of two culturally contrasting populations the one akin to Western Europe the other to the traditional Moslem Middle East. These historical contrasts assume new dimensions as both populations grow and the Moslems economically retarded rapidly extend their numerical preponderance. Although in other countries of North Africa one finds a similar cultural dualism and recent heightening of the problems of growth he has less there to go on by way of demographic measurement. Even for Algeria the records have notable deficiencies. Both Moslems and non-Moslems in Algeria are composed of somewhat heterogeneous elements. The non-Moslems (one million in 1954) as defined for statistical purposes include French citizens born in Algeria or elsewhere in the French Union Algerian Jews (established there since Roman times and recognized as French citizens since the Cr‚mieux decrees of 1870) naturalized and alien immigrants from other European countries (notably Spain Italy Malta Turkey) and those Moslems who havng renounced their special status are no longer subject to Koranic law. The Moslems (eight and a half million in 1954) include two main linguistic groups in the proportion of one to four. The smaller group speaks Berber an ancient language without a written alphabet. The larger speaks Arabic. About one in ten of the Moslem population also speaks French and about one in fourteen is bilingual in Arabic and Berber. (excerpt)

A New Census of the Moslem World

A CENSUS of the number of Mohammedans in the world is desirable because the discrepancies in the different statistical surveys attempted by various authorities and hitherto published are as disconcerting as they are surprising. Most of the estimates, it is true, have been made by Western writers, but they have often repeated figures given by Moslems, or, in some case, by pro-Islamic orators who exaggerate totals. During the negotiations of the Peace Treaty of Sevres, for example, an Indian Mohammedan wrote an appeal on behalf of the 400,000,000 Moslems of the world! In the Revue du Monde Musulman, Vol. 4, pp. 770-798, there is a long review of a book Siyahat ul Kubra-The Great Travels-by Suleiman Chukri Bey, printed at St. Petersburg in 1907, in which this Moslem globe-trotter gives the total Moslem population of the world as 360,766,695 of which 10,719,658 are in Europe, 218,789,957 in Asia, 98,952,000 in Africa and 32,305,000 in the islands of the Indian Ocean! El Moayyad, a Cairo newspaper, dated 9th November 1909, gave the total population of the Moslem world as 270,000,000, but of these 40,000,000 were said to live in China, where we know there are less than 12,000,000. In another case to which the late Rev. H. H. Jessop, D. D., called attention, the Sublime Porte under the ZHlamidian Regime carefully copied a survey of the Moslem world published in the Missionary Review of the World in 1898, and gave it as an accurate census taken under the supervision of the Sultan and at his expense! His letter on the subject dated Beirut, October 15, 1900, reads: I once translated your statistical summary of the number of Moslems in the world, 196,000,000, and showed it to the Mudir al Maarif. He took it and afterwards replied that it could not be published, as the Emperor William in Damascus had spoken publicly of the Moslems as 300,000,000! I told him the Emperor was simply quoting the exaggerated statement of a Moslem Sheikh at the dinner table, but the Mudir kept it and sent it to Constantinople and now it has come out as the official census made by the Sultan's Government and published by the Turk! XX.—On the Coptic Churches of Old Cairo

The site of El-Fustât, or Old Cairo, lies about a mile and a half from the modern city, on the plain between the Nile and the Mokattam hills.With the exception of the Coptic churches and monasteries little of it now remains, and its site is covered by great heaps of rubbish full of fragments of pottery of various dates.The Coptic churches are grouped together in “dayrs,” or inclosures surrounded by high walls, into which there is only one small entrance; these walls were to protect the Copts from the attacks of the Moslem population.
