Exogenous paclobutrazol effectively mitigates salt stress in ‘Duli’ (Pyrus betulifolia) seedlings by reducing Na+/K+ ratio, improving their osmotic substances, and activating the expression level of SOS and ABA pathway genes

Soil salinization is responsible for reductions in soil utilization by plants. Paclobutrazol (PAC) is an important plant growth regulator that is responsive to multiple biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, we measured the impact of salt stress and PAC treatments on the growth, physiology, transcriptome, and related genes expression level of ‘Duli’ (Pyrus betulifolia). Our results show that NP treatment (200 mM NaCl + 10 μM PAC) improves this plant's morphological characters, decreases its Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio from 9.33 % to 22.48 % compared to the NT (200 mM NaCl), increases its antioxidant enzyme activity, and inhibits its active oxygen as well as malondialdehyde content, and enables it to accumulate osmotic adjustment substances (i.e., proline and soluble sugar). NP treatment slows down chlorophyll degradation and regulation of endogenous hormones to safeguard photosynthesis. Further, combining the RNA–seq and q–PCR results reveals that NP increases the expression of salt overly sensitive (SOS) genes (SOS1, SOS2, SOS3), ion transporter (PbANN1, PbAKT), ABA receptor PbPYLs, and transcription factors (PbNAC, PbWRKY). In conclusion, this study's findings demonstrates that exogenous PAC is effective at countering salt stress–induced damage to ‘Duli’ seedlings, which can be applied to improve ‘Duli’ salt tolerance in pear production.

Enhancing Plant Species Retrieval in Flora Through Language Model Integration

Traditionally, textual data storage and retrieval systems were designed primarily for human reading, mainly relying on paper records. However, as information technology has advanced, computerized searches have become common. However, Boolean logic-based data retrieval systems often struggle to handle data's diversity and richness effectively. These systems rely on strict matching rules, which can lead to either too few or too many results. For example, when searching for plant species descriptions, a query like "circle" AND "ellipse" may exclude relevant records that describe these traits using slightly different terms (e.g., "round" or "oval"). Conversely, broader queries like "oblong" may return an overwhelming number of irrelevant results. This rigidity limits the system's ability to adapt to the nuanced and varied ways users describe data. With the advent of advanced semantic models such as SBERT (Sentence-Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) (Reimers and Gurevych 2019), we can now delve deeper into the semantic relationships within textual data. Unlike general-purpose large language models, SBERT is specifically designed for efficient semantic similarity computation. In plant taxonomy, records in Flora, such as Flora of Taiwan or Flora of China, play a crucial role in understanding plant diversity in specific regions. These records provide critical information on plant growth environments, morphological characteristics, and economic values. Our research aims to enhance the efficiency of retrieving plant data using language models. Specifically, we transform textual descriptions from Flora and user queries into vector representations (Fig. 2) and calculate their cosine similarity to determine the relevance between user inputs and species records. Cosine similarity, a metric commonly used in text mining and information retrieval, quantifies the similarity between two vectors by measuring the cosine of the angle between them. The similarity score ranges from -1 (completely dissimilar) to 1 (identical), where higher scores indicate greater similarity. By applying this method, we can provide users with ranked scores of plant species related to their queries (Fig. 1). This approach not only streamlines data retrieval but also introduces new perspectives for botanical research and data management, fostering a more efficient exploration of plant diversity. Our results demonstrate the potential of language models to facilitate biodiversity research and data management, especially in retrieving plant taxonomy information. Our approach provides a novel tool for future biodiversity data analysis and retrieval, thereby contributing to the progress of biodiversity conservation.

Morphological Traits and Biomass Allocation of Leymus secalinus along Habitat Gradient in a Floodplain Wetland of the Heihe River, China

Plant organ biomass allocation and morphological characteristics are important functional traits. The responses of plant root, stem, and leaf traits to heterogeneous habitats in floodplain wetlands are highly important for understanding the ecological adaptation strategies of riparian plants. However, the patterns of these responses remain unclear. In a floodplain wetland in the middle reaches of the Heihe River, we studied the responses of the root, stem, and leaf morphological traits and biomass allocation of Leymus secalinus to varying habitat conditions. We measured these traits in three sample plots, delineated based on distance from the riverbank: plot I (near the riparian zone, 50–150 m from the riverbank), plot II (middle riparian zone, 200–300 m from the riverbank), and plot III (far riparian zone, 350–450 m from the riverbank). The results showed that in plot I, L. secalinus tended to have slender roots and stems and small leaves, with a biomass allocation strategy that maximized the root–shoot ratio (RSR). In plot II, L. secalinus had thick stems and moderate leaf and root patterns, and the RSR values were between those of plot I and plot III. In plot III, L. secalinus had thin and short stems and large leaves; furthermore, among the root morphological structures, plot III had the shortest Rhizome length (RL) and longest Rhizome diameter (RD), and the RSR was the lowest. Moreover, there was a significant correlation between organ biomass and leaf thickness, stem length, RD, and RL in the three habitats (p < 0.05). By balancing the biomass allocation among organs, wetland plants in floodplains balance changes in root, stem, and leaf morphological characteristics to improve their environmental adaptation.

Antixenosis in Cultivars of Tomato against <i>Helicoverpa armigera</i> (Hubner)

This study on the effect of antixenosis in relation to resistance against Helicoverpa armigera in tomato was carried out at the Entomological Research Farm, LPU, Phagwara during 2020 and 2021. The result showed that the antixenosis effect of four tomato cultivars on plant morphological characters revealed that Rahul cultivar with maximum trichome density in lamina (181 and 183 cm-2), vein (89 and 93 cm), trichome length (132.43 and 136.21 µm) and leaf lamina thickness (0.21 and 0.23 mm). Correlation analysis between morphological character and larval incidence revealed significant negative correlation with trichome density (lamina and vein), trichome length, leaf area and leaf lamina thickness.

Plant Growth Regulators Enhance Maize (Zea mays L.) Yield under High Density by Optimizing Canopy Structure and Delaying Leaf Senescence

Shaping the canopy architecture and delaying leaf senescence in maize are pivotal strategies for extending the crop’s photosynthetic period and improving yield. The application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) is a critical cultivation measure, with the timing of application being of paramount importance. To explore the effects of PGR application time on maize canopy structure, leaf senescence characteristics and yield, a comparative two-year field study was undertaken during the 2019–2020 growing seasons at the Gongzhuling Experimental Station of the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, utilizing a PGR containing ethephon as the active ingredient. The experiment was structured with two plant densities of 60,000 and 90,000 plants ha−1, and three distinct PGR application protocols: T10 (application of PGR at the 10th leaf stage), T15 (application at the 15th leaf stage), and CK (control group sprayed with water). The result indicated that the yield increased by 5.62% following T15 treatment compared to the CK under high density (90,000 plants ha−1). Furthermore, the kernel per ear and the 1000-kernel weight increased by 3.93% and 5.62% respectively, while the abortion rate decreased. Correlation analysis showed that yield and yield components were correlated with plant morphology, physiology, and aging characteristics under 90,000 plants ha−1. Pollen density was also positively correlated with the top leaf area and the top leaf angle (p < 0.01). Furthermore, relative green leaf area at maturity (RGLAM) showed positive correlations with chlorophyll b, superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), peroxidase activity (POD), catalase activity (CAT), and soluble protein content (p < 0.01), while displaying a negative correlation with malondialdehyde content (MDA) (p < 0.01). Spraying plant growth regulators at the 15-leaf stage under high density can effectively enhance the top canopy structure of the maize and reduce the upper leaf area and angle, increase pollen density, and boost the number of grains. Furthermore, it delayed the senescence of leaves, prolonged the functional period of the leaves, increased kernel weight, optimized light resource utilization, and ultimately enhanced the maize yield.

Transcriptome and anatomical analysis of Stipa breviflora in response to different grazing intensities in desert steppe.

Stipa breviflora is a dominant species in the desert steppe of Northern China. Grazing is the main land use pattern of grassland, which could cause a variety of adaptive evolutionary mechanisms in plant community composition as well as individual plant growth and morphological characteristics. However, very little is known about the morphological structure and transcriptional regulation response to different grazing intensities in S. breviflora. In this study, transcriptome and anatomical analyses of S. breviflora under different grazing intensities, including no grazing, moderate grazing, and heavy grazing, were performed. The anatomical analysis results showed that epidermis cells and xylems significantly thicken with grazing intensity, suggesting that grazing results in increasing lignification. Furthermore, the components of cell walls such as lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin were all increased dramatically and significantly under both moderate and heavy grazing. Transcriptome analysis showed that the differentially expressed genes related to different grazing intensities were also engaged in plant cell wall formation and in photosynthesis and respiration. In addition, the activities of ATP synthase and Rubisco-activating enzyme increased significantly with enhanced grazing intensity and differed significantly between moderate and heavy grazing intensities. The trends in transcriptome and plant phenotype changes are consistent. Taken together, these results indicated that S. breviflora has evolved a grazing tolerance strategy under long-term grazing conditions, influencing photosynthesis and respiration in terms of its own structure and enzyme activities in the body, to maintain normal life activities under different grazing conditions.

Growth Responses of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) to Selected Plant Growth Regulators

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of two types of plant growth regulators (PGRs) which are gibberellins (GA3) and Paclobutrazol (PBZ) on the growth and photosynthetic pigment (chlorophyll) of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) plants. Exogenous applications of GA3 and PBZ with different concentrations (i.e. 20, 40, 80 and 100 mg/L) were sprayed on two-week-old Okra plants under the nursery stage. The control plants were only treated with distilled water. The stem diameter (mm) of treated and control plants was measured weekly. At the end of the experimental period, data on growth characteristics such as plant height (cm), leaf area (cm2) and number of leaves were recorded. The estimation of chlorophyll was measured using the SPAD-502 Chlorophyll Meter. Results showed that the plant morphological characteristics of Okra plants were significantly affected by the application of GA3 and PBZ (P<0.0001). In addition, stem growth (expressed as stem cross-sectional area- mm2) of Okra plants was significantly increased with increasing GA3 concentrations. In contrast, applying PBZ reduced Okra plants' stem growth. This study highlighted the major effects of GA3 and PBZ on the growth of Okra plants when planted under tropical climate conditions.

The Effect of Biotic Stress in Plant Species Induced by ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’—An Artificial Neural Network Approach

Infections with phytoplasma present one of the most significant biotic stresses influencing plant health, growth, and production. The phytoplasma ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ infects a variety of plant species. This pathogen impacts the physiological and morphological characteristics of plants causing stunting, yellowing, leaf curling, and other symptoms that can lead to significant economic losses. The aim of this study was to determine biochemical changes in peony (Paeonia tenuifolia L.), mint (Mentha × piperita L.), and dill (Anethum graveolens L.) induced by ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani’ in Serbia as well as to predict the impact of the biotic stress using artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. The phylogenetic position of the Serbian ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani’ strains originated from the tested hosts using 16S rRNA (peony and carrot strains) and plsC (mint and dill strains) sequences indicated by their genetic homogeneity despite the host of origin. Biochemical parameters significantly differed in asymptomatic and symptomatic plants, except for total anthocyanidins contents in dill and the capacity of peony and mint extracts to neutralize superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals, respectively. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed a correlation between different chemical parameters and revealed a clear separation among the samples. Based on the ANN performance, the optimal number of hidden neurons for the calculation of TS, RG, PAL, LP, NBT, •OH, TP, TT, Tflav, Tpro, Tant, DPPH, and Car was nine (using MLP 8-9-13), as it produced high r2 values (1.000 during the training period) and low SOS values. Developing an effective early warning system for the detection of plant diseases in different plant species is critical for improving crop yield and quality.

How do novel plant growth regulators and cultivation models strategies affect mechanical strength, lodging resistance and maize productivity in semi-arid regions?

Plant growth regulators are synthetic compounds that have become a significant and technical guarantee for agricultural productivity. In China, "Jindeli", which contains active elements of ethephon and cycocel (EC), has been proven to prevent maize stem elongation, improve maize stem thickness, stem morphology and mechanical strength, root growth, lodging resistance, and yield under various cultivation models. Diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6) can promote cell division and growth. From 2020–2021, four growth regulators sprays were used to conduct a field experiment; G1: water spraying; G2: EC spraying; G3: DA-6 spraying; G4: EC+DA-6 spraying under two cultivation models; R: ridge covered with plastic film mulching and T: traditional flat planting without plastic mulching. The results indicated that RG4 treatment considerably decreased plant height, internode length, ear height, lodging rate, and center of gravity height, while improved the internode bending strength, cross-sectional area, cortical thickness, and stem vascular bundles as compared with rest of all other treatments. RG4 treatment considerably improved internode diameter, stem mechanical strength, filling degree, root growth, mean tilt angle, and lignin content, while significantly reducing LAI. In addition, RG4 considerably enhanced the quality of corn stems, such as increasing mechanical properties and enhancing the compressive strength of corn stalks that content of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin has been increased. Furthermore, RG4 treatment significantly improved grain yield by optimizing leaf layer structure and increasing bleeding saps levels, increasing the grains per row and ear. Thus, under the RG4 treatment maize lodging rate was decreased 72.1%, and increased WUE (52.8%), and grain yield (46.6%). In conclusion, the results clearly demonstrate that in the semi-arid regions risk of lodging can be avoided by spraying EC+DA-6 with ridge covered plastic film mulching to the enriched stalk quality, shaping plant morphological characteristics, and proving a stable cultivation model to improving maize productivity.

Can LED Lighting Be a Sustainable Solution for Producing Nutritionally Valuable Microgreens?

With its quality, intensity, and photoperiod, light is a decisive abiotic factor that directly influences plant biomass and the accumulation of specialized metabolites (SMs). Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) has significant effects on primary and secondary plant metabolism and thus influences the morphological characteristics of plants and their antioxidant systems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of blue, red, and a 50:50 combination of blue and red LED lighting on the SM content in broccoli, mustard, and garden cress microgreens grown in an indoor farm using the zero-acreage farming technique (ZFarming). This research aims to provide valuable insights into the optimization of light spectra to improve the nutritional quality of microgreens, with a focus on sustainable and space-saving cultivation methods. After eight days, the samples were cut in the cotyledon phenophase and analyzed in a fresh state. The microgreens grown under the blue spectrum LED lighting had the highest content of ascorbic acid (112.70 mg·100 g fw−1), total phenolics (412.39 mg GAE·100 g fw−1), and the highest antioxidant capacity (2443.62 µmol TE·L−1). The results show that the highest content of SMs in all the studied microgreens species was accumulated under the blue spectrum LED lighting. This study underlines the favorable influence of the blue spectrum (400–500 nm) on the nutrient content, especially the enhancement of SMs, in the microgreens investigated. Furthermore, the use of supplemental LED lighting proves to be a sustainable and effective means of producing microgreens with superior nutritional properties through the innovative practice of the zero-acreage farming technique.

Formation of a model of lettuce (<i>Lactuca sativa</i> L.) variety of the Batavia type for hydroponic cultivation

Relevance. Currently, there is a tendency to increase the volume of lettuce cultivation in hydroponics. Such specific conditions for growing lettuce hydroponically as high humidity in the root zone, different levels of illumination throughout the year and specific mineral nutrition, dictate a number of necessary characteristics that varieties should possess. In addition, the lettuce variety for hydroponics should consistently give high yield and have good consumer qualities. Accordingly, it is necessary to carry out selection separately for specific hydroponic conditions. And for theoretical justification of the selection of lettuce varieties for this technology and increasing the efficiency of the breeding process, it is necessary to form a model of the variety, which was the goal of this research.Methods. The 13 most common lettuce varieties were research: 8 light green and 5 dark green Batavia. The morphological characteristics of plants in the phase of industrial ripeness were described and the biometric traits of plants were determined.Results. Based on research in 2021-2023 the 13 most commonly hydroponically grown lettuce varieties of the Batavia variety have been defined as the variety model criteria for hydroponics. The characteristics of a leaf rosette, leaf blade, indicators of early ripening and productivity inherent in these varieties were identified, and a model of the variety was formed on their basis.

Two Growing-Season Warming Partly Promoted Growth but Decreased Reproduction and Ornamental Value of Impatiens oxyanthera.

Climate warming profoundly affects the vegetative growth, flowering phenology and sexual reproduction of plants; therefore, it affects the ornamental value of wild flowers. Despite this, the extent and mechanism of the impact remain unclear. Here, we conducted a warming experiment for two growing seasons (increases of 1.89 °C in 2017 and 2.37 °C in 2018) with infrared heaters to examine the effects of warming on the ornamental value of the wild flower Impatiens oxyanthera, endemic to China, in Mount Emei. We evaluated the comprehensive ornamental value based on plant morphology and flowering characteristics using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and disentangled the impact of the two traits on ornamental value using principal component analysis (PCA) and the partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) under ambient and warming treatments. We hypothesized that warming would reduce the ornamental value of I. oxyanthera in terms of plant morphology and flowering traits. Our results showed that warming significantly decreased plant height and crown width and increased branch number and single-leaf area. Warming also decreased vexillum length, corolla tube length, nectar spur length and pedicel length. In addition, warming shortened flowering duration per plant and reduced flower number, while there was no significant effect on flower longevity and flower color at full-bloom stage between the control and warming treatment. Therefore, the comprehensive ornamental value under warming was lower than that under the control. Pedicel length, flower color, flower longevity and flowering duration per plant were the main factors affecting the comprehensive ornamental value. The PLS-SEM showed that warming had an indirect negative effect on ornamental value via direct negative effects on flowering traits. Collectively, these results indicate that, although promoting vegetative growth, short-term warming significantly decreased the ornamental value of I. oxyanthera due to warming-caused smaller flowers and shorter flowering duration.

Plant morphological characters diversity of several superior and local varieties of garlic in various agroecological types

Since 2017, the government has determined garlic (Allium sativum L.) as a priority vegetable commodity. Support for the varieties selection is needed in garlic development areas with various agroecology. There were 7 varieties of garlic (Lumbu Hijau, Lumbu Kuning, Lumbu Putih, Tawang Mangu Baru, Sangga Sembalun, Geol and Kusuma) planted in Batu, Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo and Mojokerto areas. Research activities related to the diversity of plant characters including leaves, tubers and cloves were conducted from 2022 to 2023 with descriptive data processing methods. The varieties currently be in developed were able to compete with imported garlic. Lumbu Kuning from Sumber Brantas, Batu, has a weight of up to 12,9 g per clove, 100 cloves weigh 372,8 g with around 2-10 cloves per tuber. Meanwhile, Lumbu Hijau from Pujon, Malang, has a weight of 4,4 g per clove, 262,3 g per 100 cloves and the number of cloves per tuber is around 2-10. Imported garlic has a weight per clove up to 6,7 g, 311,6 g per 100 cloves, and the number of cloves per tuber is 7-13. The plants performance is also different between varieties and tends to be different in quantitative characteristics according to the method of cultivation and agroecology.

An insight into the different responses to salt stress in growth characteristics of two legume species during seedling growth.

Legumes play a crucial role in the restoration and utilization of salinized grassland. To explore the physiological response mechanism of Astragalus membranaceus and Medicago sativa seedlings to salt stress, salt stress culture experiments with five NaCl concentration treatments (0 mmol/L, 50 mmol/L, 100 mmol/L, 200 mmol/L, and 300 mmol/L) were conducted on these two legume seedlings. Morphological characteristics, physiological features, biomass, and the protective enzyme system were measured for both seedlings. Correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and membership function analysis (MFA) were conducted for each index. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the salt stress pathways of plants. The results indicated that number of primary branches (PBN), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity in stems and leaves, catalase (CAT) activity in roots, etc. were identified as the primary indicators for evaluating the salt tolerance of A. membranaceus during its seedling growth period. And CAT and peroxidase (POD) activity in roots, POD and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in stems and leaves, etc. were identified as the primary indicators for evaluating the salt tolerance of M. sativa during its growth period. Plant morphological characteristics, physiological indexes, and underground biomass (UGB) were directly affected by salinity, while physiological indexes indirectly affected the degree of leaf succulence (LSD). Regarding the response of the protective enzyme system to salt stress, the activity of POD and APX increased in A. membranaceus, while the activity of CAT increased in M.sativa. Our findings suggest that salt stress directly affects the growth strategies of legumes. Furthermore, the response of the protective enzyme system and potential cell membrane damage to salinity were very different in the two legumes.

Study of morphological characteristics of several valuable Armeniam varieties of tomato

The article presents the researches on the morphological characteristics of seedlings, plants and fruits of several valuable Armenian tomato varieties intended for fresh consumption: Lia, Titan, Orange, intended for processing Marine and chery Zeytun, in the hot conditions of the Ararat Plain. The results of the study showed that the investigated varieties of tomato are distinguished from each other by morphological characteristics of plants, fruits of different size, shape, color, they are adaptive in the case of cultivation in the hot climatic conditions of the Ararat Plain. The results of the study allow to guarantee the cultivation of these new cultivars Titan, Orange, Marine, Zeytun in the farms of the zones with similar conditions.

Medicago falcata L. Population State and Prospects for Use in North-Western Region

Meadows play an important role in maintaining the floristic diversity of regional floras. The phytocenotic allocation of the Medicago falcata L. population has not been sufficiently studied, as well as patterns of distribution of its units and unit groups, viability in a specific habitat under various anthropogenic influences. The growth and development of Medicago falcata L. populations under optimal conditions are becoming increasingly relevant and are promising in theoretical and applied aspects.The purpose is to study morphological characteristics and search for valuable forms of Medicago falcata L. to create varieties with high seed and feed productivity in the process of breeding work. The morphological characteristics of plants were studied depending on the age state and distribution of units in the territory they occupied. We have established that the total number of plants in the juvenile state in the population varies little from year to year, although the quantitative ratios of young plants of individual species can fluctuate significantly. This indicates that units in the juvenile state occupy a common ecological niche in the cenosis. The population of Medicago falcata L., growing in the Shelon meadow in the Soltsydistrict, differ in the methods of vegetation resumption, with numerous well-leafed shoots and high ecological plasticity. The formed meadow ecosystems depend not only on the natural conditions in their locations, but also on the influence of anthropogenic factors, which in turn affects the biogeocenosis (living organisms and their interaction with the environment) and, accordingly, the species composition of the meadow. There are rosette-free monocyclic vegetative and generative shoots, with a well-developed root system vertically and horizontally in the soil profile.

Turf-Type Tall Fescue Brown Patch Resistance as Influenced by Morphological Characteristics

Brown patch (caused by multiple species of Rhizoctonia and Rhizoctonia-like fungi) is one of the major turfgrass diseases impacting turf-type tall fescue [ Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort., nom. cons.] lawns during the summer season. Selection of tall fescue cultivars with brown patch resistance is an important cultural management practice to reduce disease severity and limit reliance on fungicides. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to quantify differences in brown patch resistance among 15 tall fescue cultivars and correlate disease resistance with plant morphological characteristics. Prior to R. solani inoculation, leaf blade width, sheath width and length, endophyte stem infection, and relative growth rate were measured. Disease resistance was determined as a percentage of the canopy blighted as measured using digital image techniques. Brown patch severity after 21 days in Experiments 1 and 2 ranged from 36.7 to 72.7% and 20.8 to 41.8%, respectively, among all cultivars. There were significant differences among morphological characteristics for the cultivars. Increased brown patch was associated with cultivars with a faster growth rate, wider sheath width, and decreased sheath length. This study demonstrates the importance of cultivar selection for reducing brown patch severity in tall fescue lawns. Additionally, tall fescue cultivars with higher shoot density and narrow leaves should not be avoided due to concerns of increased brown patch susceptibility.

Resistance of sugarcane hybrids to internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

ABSTRACT A four-year field study (2013–2016) was conducted to screen Indian sugarcane hybrids together with two susceptible checks against internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Kapur) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in endemic locations of Tamil Nadu State, India. Each year, borer incidence on cane basis and intensity on internode basis were assessed at harvest to eliminate susceptible entries. Of the total 535 hybrids screened, only Co 293 emerged as resistant at the end of fourth year trial which was confirmed in tests under controlled conditions with artificial infestation. A modified relative resistance ratio computed using incidence and intensity also confirmed its resistance to the borer. In laboratory oviposition choice tests with excised leaves of the resistant Co 293 and susceptible hybrids Co 86032 and Co 1060, percent of leaf bits oviposited, egg masses laid, and egg numbers deposited were significantly lowest in Co 293. Also, an oviposition preference index computed for both egg mass number and egg number was significantly lowest for Co 293 which suggested antixenosis. Larval survival was significantly lowest in Co 293 with 5 to 10-fold higher neonate mortality than in the two susceptible hybrids. Prolonged larval development period and lower fecundity were observed when the borer was reared on Co 293 which indicated antibiosis. A relative suitability ratio developed from larval and pupal durations also indicated lower suitability of Co 293. Among the plant morphological characters examined, leaf length and cane thickness positively influenced borer incidence; loose sheath-clasp was associated with higher borer incidence. Among 12 shoot phenolics quantified, eight were present in higher quantities in Co 293 suggesting their role in antibiosis. Co 293 identified as resistant hybrid in the present study has the potential to be used as a parent in breeding programs for C. sacchariphagus indicus resistance.

Protective role of Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed biomass conjugated organic minerals as therapeutic nutrients to enhance tomato plant grown under salinity stress

AbstractClimate changes and stresses negatively affected the physiological processes inside plant cells, which led to a clear imbalance in the global diet. In both irrigated and non-irrigated areas, salinity is one of the principal abiotic factors influencing plant growth and production, especially in crop plants. The present experiment was designed to evaluate two types of foliar feeding as anti-salt stress by measuring stress tolerant and antioxidant levels. Foliar feedings, Gluamin Cu, and Ascophyllum nodosum (WeGrow Special) were used as therabutic nutrients and stress raisers on plants irrigated with saline solution (150 mmol) and others irrigated with tap water. After 70 days of plant life, morphological characteristics, plant pigments, osmosis levels, phenols, and antioxidant enzyme activity were measured as indicators of plant recovery from stress damage. Measurements of vegetative growth, photosynthesis, sugars, and protein content decreased significantly in stressed plants. On the contrary, the level of proline, phenol, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium (Na +) and the activity of antioxidant enzymes increased compared to non-stressed plants. The beneficial impacts of the foliar feedings (Gluamin Cu and WeGrow Special) have been broadened to increase all growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, proline, phenol, and enzyme activities, in both unstressed and stressed plants in comparison to control. Interestingly, the harmful impact of salinity on tomato plants was significantly decreased and it can be evident from reduced MDA and H2O2 levels. The results indicated that Gluamin Cu at a concentration of 3 cm L−1 foliar was the best treatment in increasing shoot length by 18.75%, root length by 51.8%, number of leaves by 31.5%, chlorophyll A by 98.9% and chlorophyll B by 47.6%, proline 12.6%, peroxidase by 39.6%, polyphenol oxidase by 14.29%, super oxide dismutase by 16.4%, and catalase by 54.9% in stressed plants compared to the stressed control. These results indicated that the use of any of the foliar nutrients (Gluamin Cu and WeGrow Special) considered to raise the salt stress in the plant and improve its morphological characteristics and metabolic processes inside the cells, and thus it can be used and applied commercially as environmentally friendly anti-salt stress.
