A parametric study on strawberry radiated shaped monopole antenna for ultrawide-band applications

This article gives a parametric study on strawberry-shaped monopole antennas for ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The antenna design consisted of three different parametric design steps to structure the strawberry radiated monopole antenna. The scheduled strawberry monopole antenna was simulated on an FR4 substrate in a low profile for UWB applications. The total physical dimension is 26 mm×26 mm×1.6 mm, corresponding to the centre frequency of 7.5 GHz. The strawberry antenna is fed via a coplanar waveguide (CPW) to attain the best impedance matching for UWB systems. The presented monopole antenna has an impedance UWB bandwidth of 11.0 GHz from 2.6 GHz up to 13.6 GHz at −10 dB return loss. The simulated UWB strawberry monopole antenna displays an omnidirectional radiation behaviour with a simulated gain of 7.3 dB at 13.6 GHz, a directivity of 7.5 dBi at 13.6 GHz and favourable radiation efficiency of 97%. The proposed monopole UWB strawberry antenna has the technological possibility to be used for UWB applications.

Design and comparative analysis of circuit theory model‐based slot‐loaded printed rectangular monopole antenna for UWB applications with notch band

SummaryIn this paper, a slotted printed rectangular monopole antenna (SPRMA) is proposed that covers the entire UWB (ultra‐wideband) except for WiMAX and WLAN (802.11/a‐n). In the first stage, a rectangular monopole antenna is designed, which covers the entire UWB frequency. Then, a T‐slot is inserted in the radiating patch to have the rejection of the band containing WiMAX and WLAN (802.11/a‐n). The notch characteristics of the proposed antenna are observed from 3.0 to 3.65 GHz and 4.5 to 6.65 GHz respectively. Measured peak gain of 3.28 dBi has been observed at 4.25 GHz frequency. To show the validation of antenna, mathematical analysis using circuit theory has been also given in the paper. The prototype has been also tested inside the anechoic chamber to give the validation in real‐time environment. Several other reported antenna structures have also the same notch band in UWB with different notching methods. The proposed structure's radiation properties are compared with other reported structures proving the compactness of the proposed structure.

Novel Compact UWB Planar Monopole Antenna Using a Ribbon-Shaped Slot

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is a wireless communication technology that can be utilized for precise indoor positioning system. UWB is low power-consuming and resistant to complex multipath environments, thanks to a short pulse signal. Since the main desired characteristics of the UWB antennas for radio-frequency localization systems are wide bandwidth, omnidirectional radiation pattern, and low profile for simple integration with printed circuit boards, various planar monopole antennas for UWB applications were proposed to meet the requirements. In order to satisfy these conditions, in this paper, a novel compact UWB planar monopole antenna operating in 3.1 GHz – 10.8 GHz is designed on FR-4 substrate. The overall size of the antenna is 12.5 × 12.5 × 1 mm³, which is 0.129 λ₀ × 0.258 λ₀ × 0.01 λ₀ in free space at the lowest frequency. The transmission line is designed based on a coplanar waveguide with ground (CPWG) and vias in the CPWG are employed to eliminate non-radiating phenomenon at some specific frequencies. The shape of the radiator is modified from the hexagonal shape and a ribbon-shaped slot inside the radiator is adapted to improve the operating frequency range. The proposed UWB planar monopole antenna is fabricated and measured. The proposed antenna provides good antenna performance from 3.1 to 10.8 GHz and also the radiation patterns at various frequencies are omnidirectional pattern.

Design of a Compact Monopole Antenna for UWB Applications

In this paper, a low cost, highly efficient and low profile monopole antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is presented. A new inverted triangular-shape structure possessing meander lines is designed to achieve a wideband response and high efficiency. To design the proposed structure, three steps are utilized to achieve an UWB response. The bandwidth of the proposed antenna is improved with changing meander lines parameters, miniaturization of the ground width and optimization of the feeding line. The measured and simulated frequency band ranges from 3.2 to 12 GHz, while the radiation patterns are measured at 4, 5.3, 6 and 8 GHz frequency bands. The overall volume of the proposed antenna is 26 × 25 × 1.6 mm3 ; whereas the FR4 material is used as a substrate with a relative permittivity and loss tangent of 4.3 and 0.025, correspondingly. The peak gain of 4 dB is achieved with a radiation efficiency of 80 to 98% for the entire wideband. Design modelling of proposed antenna is performed in ANSYS HFSS 13 software. A decent consistency between the simulated and measured results is accomplished which shows that the proposed antenna is a potential candidate for the UWB applications.

Defected waveguide structure designs and characteristics

AbstractThis article presented defected waveguide structure (DWS) designs and characteristics with microstrip‐fed circular monopole antenna for ultrawideband applications. Typically, waveguide is often designed and employed as antenna and filter application in its rigid dimension. The reconfigurable design toward the waveguide in terms of structural alteration with DWS was found less concerned among researchers although defected ground structure and defected microstrip structure have been applied widely. The motivation of this article was to propose the different DWS designs and characteristics in terms of the S‐parameters result. DWS in basic square geometry with different configurations of straight lines were introduced and compared with FR4 substrate waveguide. Simulated S‐parameters results were modeled in terms of equivalent circuit and measured for validation. For practical measurement, waveguide ports at both open‐ended surface of waveguide were replaced by the monopole antenna. For the modeled S‐parameters results, the square DWS design and square DWS with horizontal straight lines showed quite similar characteristics with higher S11 and lower S21 above frequency 9 GHz. Whereas square DWS with vertical straight lines and square DWS with both horizontal vertical straight lines showed higher S11 and lower S21 below frequency 3.5 GHz. Square DWS with vertical straight lines achieved the lowest S21 around −70 dB below 3.5 GHz and lower S21 around −50 dB at frequency 10.3 GHz. Thus, DWS is proposed for the future smart antenna technology as it can be further modified to meet the different requirements without changing the antenna configuration.

Compact frequency reconfigurable triple band notched monopole antenna for ultrawideband applications

A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) reconfigurable microstrip fed monopole antenna having size of 0.22 λ0 × 0.28 λ0 × 0.005 λ0 with switchable frequency bands is presented. Triple band notched characteristics are achieved by inserting two stubs at top of radiator and one slot in between the radiator and microstrip feed line. Proposed antenna achieves reconfigurability with three PIN diodes at strategic positions to obtain eight different operational modes. In one of the operational modes, antenna operates in the entire UWB (3-14 GHz) with fractional bandwidth of 127.5%. Two stubs are used to notch two frequency bands worldwide interoperability for microwave access (3.3-3.6 GHz/WiMAX) and C-band (3.7-4.2 GHz). T-shaped slot is also inserted to notch wireless local area network (5.725-5.825 GHz/WLAN) frequency band. Proper biasing of PIN diodes is done by using suitable chip inductors and capacitors. Proposed antenna exhibits stable radiation patterns with average gain of around 3 dBi. Simulation and measurement results are in good agreement. Proposed antenna is suitable for on-demand band rejection of parasitic bands coexisting in UWB.

Design of Key-shaped monopole antenna for UWB applications

In this paper key shaped monopole antenna with and without rectangular slot inserted on feeding strip is proposed for Ultra Wide Band (UWB). This UWB antenna is etched on a 30 x 30mm 2 commercially available low cost substrate of Flame Recorded Grade 4 (FR4) with thickness of 1.6mm, relative dielectric constant ɛr = 4.4 and dielectric loss tangent = 0.02. One of the industry leading 3D EM software tools for radio frequency (RF) application known as High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) was used to design this UWB antenna. The reflection coefficient S 11 of the proposed antenna was found to be less than -10dB and Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) is less than 2. It was found that the designed UWB antenna is operable over the entire 3.1GHz - 10.6GHz frequency range. Compact Planar Ultrawideband Antennas with 3.5/5.2/5.8 GHz Triple Band-Notched Characteristics for Internet of Things Applications

Ultrawideband (UWB) antennas, as core devices in high-speed wireless communication, are widely applied to mobile handsets, wireless sensor networks, and Internet of Things (IoT). A compact printed monopole antenna for UWB applications with triple band-notched characteristics is proposed in this paper. The antenna has a very compact size of 10 × 16 mm2 and is composed of a square slotted radiation patch and a narrow rectangular ground plane on the back of the substrate. First, by etching a pair of inverted T-shaped slots at the bottom of the radiation patch, one notched band at 5–6 GHz for rejecting the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is generated. Then, by cutting a comb-shaped slot on the top of the radiation patch, a second notched band for rejecting 3.5 GHz Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is obtained. Further, by cutting a pair of rectangular slots and a C-shaped slot as well as adding a pair of small square parasitic patches at the center of the radiating patch, two separate notched bands for rejecting 5.2 GHz lower WLAN and 5.8 GHz upper WLAN are realized, respectively. Additionally, by integrating the slotted radiation patch with the narrow rectangular ground plane, an enhanced impedance bandwidth can be achieved, especially at the higher band. The antenna consists of linear symmetrical sections only and is easy for fabrication and fine-tuning. The measured results show that the designed antenna provides a wide impedance bandwidth of 150% from 2.12 to 14.80 GHz for VSWR < 2, except for three notched bands of 3.36–4.16, 4.92–5.36, and 5.68–6.0 GHz. Additionally, the antenna exhibits nearly omnidirectional radiation characteristics, low gain at the stopbands, and flat group delay over the whole UWB except at the stopbands. Simulated and experimental results show that the proposed antenna can provide good frequency-domain and time-domain performances at desired UWB frequencies and be an attractive candidate for portable IoT applications.

DUAL-THREE STEPPED TRIDENT ULTRA-WIDEBAND PLANAR MONOPOLE ANTENNA

This paper presents a novel, dual, three-stepped-trident, planar, monopole antenna for ultra-wideband applications. The planar trident type antenna is designed, simulated, and fabricated. Its impedance bandwidth, radiation pattern and gain performances were measured. This antenna operates in the ultra-wideband from 3.0 GHz to 12.15 GHz. The maximum gain of this antenna design is 5.5 dBi. Measurements confirm the simulated results over the frequency of operation.

Novel ladder patch monopole antenna for UWB application

A novel printed microstrip-fed ladder patch monopole antenna is presented for ultrawide band (UWB) application. The antenna consists of rectangular patch elements ladder arrayed at the both sides of the microstrip-fed line on a printed circuit board (PCB) and a rectangular ground plane. The antenna parameters of ladder number N, the rectangular patches geometry of ladder elements, the ladder step length and the length of ground plane are studied to obtain optimized antenna performances. The successfully designed, implemented and measured antenna has a compact size of 12 mm×12 mm and operation frequency band from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz with voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2. Using the ladder patch array in microstrip monopole antenna design makes antennas flexible in terms of controlling resonances, bandwidth, stable radiation patterns, and constant group delay.

Printed Monopole Antenna for Ultra-Wideband Application with Tunable Triple Band-Notched Characteristics

In this paper, a compact ultra-wideband (UWB) microstrip-fed printed monopole antenna with triple band-notched characteristics is proposed. The proposed design consists of a radiating patch with two bevels at the bottom edge and the modified ground plane with two bevels of its upper edge to cause the wideband from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz for UWB application. Additionally, a triangular cut is introduced at the upper edge of the ground plane for improving the impedance matching beyond 6 GHz. The band notch at 3.4 GHz is achieved with a pair of slots along patch length and placed symmetrically on both the sides of the patch whereas notch band at 5.2 GHz is achieved using complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) on the patch. The third notch frequency at 5.8 GHz also achieved by using a pair of CSRR on the ground plane. The antenna size is 24 mm × 34.6 mm and designed using FR4 substrate having ?r = 4.4 and thickness of 0.8 mm. Design and optimizations have been carried out using HFSS v13.0 and there is good agreement with measured results. The proposed antenna exhibits a nearly omni-directional radiation pattern in the H-plane, and a dipole-like radiation pattern in the E-plane for the entire pass band.

Novel ACS-fed monopole antenna for UWB applications with sharp selectivity notched band and additional bluetooth band characteristics

A novel asymmetric coplanar strip feed (ACS-fed) ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with sharp selectivity band-notched characteristics is proposed and fabricated in this paper. The high selectivity notched band, ranging from 5.0 GHz to 5.9 GHz, is achieved by coupling the parasitic strip embedded in the ground plane and the slit etched on the radiation patch. The notched band can be easily controlled by adjusting the width or the length of the strip and the slit. Moreover, due to the unique antenna structure, the proposed antenna obtains a Bluetooth band (2.4–2.5 GHz) and two stop bands (3.3–3.8 GHz and 5.0–5.9 GHz). The antenna is printed on a very small (10 mm × 25 mm × 1 mm) substrate. Finally, the proposed compact ACS-fed UWB antenna is successfully simulated, designed and measured, showing good impedance matching, stable gain and near omni-directional radiation patterns.

Very compact palmate leaf‐shaped CPW‐FED monopole antenna for UWB applications

ABSTRACTThis article presents a very compact coplanar waveguide‐fed planar monopole antenna for ultrawideband (UWB) applications. The antenna consists of a palmate leaf‐shaped radiator with a modified shaped ground plane on the same side of the substrate. The measured impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is from 3.08 to over 14 GHz with a ratio of about 4.6:1 for VSWR ≤ 2. Experimental results show that the proposed antenna has stably omnidirectional H‐plane radiation patterns with low cross‐polarization level and average peak gain of 3 dBi across the UWB. A compact printed triangular monopole antenna for ultrawideband applications

ABSTRACTIn this article, a printed triangular‐shaped monopole antenna is proposed for emerging ultrawideband application. The proposed antenna uses a triangular radiating patch which is directly fed by a 50‐Ω microstrip feed line. To improve the impedance bandwidth, a round‐corner ground plane has been used. To further improve the impedance bandwidth for the entire band, a microstrip transition (near the antenna front end) has been introduced between the microstrip feed line and the triangular radiator that provides a wide impedance bandwidth from 1.8 to 15.0 GHz for ≤ −10 dB. The proposed antenna has been realized using the FR‐4 printed circuit board substrate and occupies a small size of about 24 × 30 × 1.6 mm3 compared to conventional antenna structures. The proposed antenna has nearly omni‐directional radiation pattern and moderate gain throughout the operating frequency region. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Printed Newton's egg curved monopole antenna for ultrawideband applications

The edge curve of a planar antenna significantly influences its radiation properties. In this study, a novel egg curve-based design of printed monopole antenna of size 40 × 40 mm2 is proposed for ultrawideband (UWB) applications. The egg shape of the proposed antennas is obtained by Newton's diverging parabolas curve referred in this study as Newton's egg curve. The design equations of the proposed antenna are developed. The variation in impedance bandwidth (BW) with various parametric variations of design curve is studied. The proposed Newton's egg curved monopole antenna (NECMA) is designed, fabricated and measured to validate the theoretical design. Good agreement between the simulated results and the measured ones is observed. An empirical formula is also proposed to approximately determine the frequency corresponding to the lower edge of −10 dB operating BW. The results show that the proposed NECMA can obtain the measured BW of 116.55% (2.9–11.0 GHz) along with stable gain of about 2.2–2.9 dBi. The proposed antenna exhibits almost omnidirectional radiation patterns with low cross polarisation in all directions and consistent group delay over the entire UWB bandwidth (3.1–10.6 GHz).

Microstrip Line-fed Printed Planar Monopole Antenna for UWB Applications

In this study, a microstrip line-fed printed planar monopole antenna for ultra-wideband applications is presented. The proposed antenna is composed of an annular ring fed by a microstrip line and a partial ground plane. It occupies 39 × 40 × 1.6 mm3 on the FR4 substrate material. The measured impedance bandwidth of the realized antenna is from 2.6 to 12.3 GHz (4.7:1, 129.35 %) for VSWR ≤ 2. It has an average gain of 3.67 dBi with a maximum gain of 5.52 dBi. Moreover, the antenna exhibits stable omnidirectional radiation patterns within the operating band. Details of the proposed antenna design are presented and discussed.

Novel Design of Dual Band-Notched Monopole Antenna With Bandwidth Enhancement for UWB Applications

This letter proposes a novel printed monopole antenna for ultrawideband applications with dual band-notched function. The antenna consists of a square radiating patch with an inverted T-shaped ring slot, surrounded by a C-shaped slot, which provides a wide usable fractional bandwidth of more than 125% (2.71-12.06 GHz). In this structure, by cutting an inverted T-shaped slot, the impedance bandwidth is effectively improved at the upper frequency. In order to generate single band-notched characteristics, we use an inverted T-shaped slot, surrounded by a C-shaped slot, in the radiating patch. By adding an inverted T-shaped parasitic structure inside the inverted T-shaped slot on the radiating patch, a dual band-notched function is achieved, and also by inserting this parasitic structure, additional resonance is excited, and hence much wider impedance bandwidth can be produced, especially at the higher band. The measured results reveal that the presented dual band-notch monopole antenna offers a wide bandwidth with two notched bands, covering all the 5.2/5.8-GHz WLAN, 3.5/5.5-GHz WiMAX, and 4-GHz C-bands. The designed antenna has a small size of 12 × 18 × 0.8 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> .

Compact ultra-wideband CPW-fed fan-shaped antenna with dual band-notched characteristics using ARC-shaped slots

In this article, a compact coplanar waveguide-fed fan-shaped monopole antenna for ultra-wideband applications with dual band-notched characteristics is proposed and studied. The antenna with fan-shaped structure occupies a small size of 35 × 30 mm2. With a pair of arc-shaped slots introduced on the radiating patch, two frequency-notched responses at 3.5/5.5 GHz are obtained. The antenna structure is designed, fabricated, and tested. Compact ultra-wideband coplanar waveguide fed fan-shaped antenna with band-notched characteristic

In this article, a compact coplanar waveguide fed fan-shaped monopole antenna for ultra-wideband applications with band-notched characteristic is presented. The antenna with fan-shaped structure occupies a small size of 35 × 30 mm2. An arc-shaped slot locating on the radiating element is used to create the 3.5 GHz band-notch characteristic.
