Novel artificial tricalcium phosphate and magnesium composite graft facilitates angiogenesis in bone healing

BackgroundBone grafting is the standard treatment for critical bone defects, but autologous grafts have limitations like donor site morbidity and limited availability, while commercial artificial grafts may have poor integration with surrounding bone tissue, leading to delayed healing. Magnesium deficiency negatively impacts angiogenesis and bone repair. Therefore, incorporating magnesium into a synthetic biomaterial could provide an excellent bone substitute. This study aims to evaluate the morphological, mechanical, and biological properties of a calcium phosphate cement (CPC) sponge composed of tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM), which could serve as an excellent bone substitute by incorporating magnesium. MethodsThis study aims to develop biomedical materials composed mainly of TTCP and MCPM powder, magnesium powder, and collagen. The materials were prepared using a wet-stirred mill and freeze-dryer methods. The particle size, composition, and microstructure of the materials were investigated. Finally, the biological properties of these materials, including 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay for biocompatibility, effects on bone cell differentiation by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity assay, and endothelial cell tube formation assay for angiogenesis, were evaluated as well. ResultsThe data showed that the sub-micron CPC powder, composed of TTCP/MCPM in a 3.5:1 ratio, had a setting time shorter than 15 minutes and a compressive strength of 4.39±0.96 MPa. This reveals that the sub-micron CPC powder had an adequate setting time and mechanical strength. We found that the sub-micron CPC sponge containing magnesium had better biocompatibility, including increased proliferation and osteogenic induction effects without cytotoxicity. The CPC sponge containing magnesium also promoted angiogenesis. ConclusionIn summary, we introduced a novel CPC sponge, which had a similar property to human bone promoted the biological functions of bone cells, and could serve as a promising material used in bone regeneration for critical bone defects.

Preparation of Injectable Dicalcium Phosphate Bone Cement for Potential Orthopedic Applications

Various natural wastes can be promising for mining more valuable compounds if some specialized extraction techniques are adopted. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a significant biomaterial that can be extracted from waste bovine bones by heating them at 700 °C and 900 °C. Based on this idea, we made a novel dicalcium phosphate (DCP) bone cement (BC) by extracting HA via the reaction with monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) and trisodium citrate. The setting time, injectability, and compressive strength (CS) of this DCPBC were examined using various analytical techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) attached with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The phase composition, surface morphology, and chemical compositions of HA and DCP were evaluated. A Gillmore needle apparatus was used to measure the initial and final setting times of the specimens. The CS values of the prepared specimens were determined using INSTRON Series IX. The in vitro dissolution behavior of all samples was evaluated by immersing them in simulated body fluid (SBF) over 7 days at 37 °C. The final setting times of samples 3, 4, and 5 were 20, 24, and 18 min, respectively. In addition, the CS value of sample 1 before immersion in SBF was much lower (1.23 MPa) compared to sample 5 (21.79 MPa) after 7 days of immersion. The CS of the DCP after 3 days of immersion was increased to 33.75 MPa. The in vitro results for the dissolution and bioactivity of HA showed the highest degradation rate after 1 day of immersion and then decreased with the increase in the immersion duration. The HA layer thickness was considerably improved with longer incubation times. The proposed injectable DCP bone cement may have potential in future orthopedic applications.

Novel injectable composite incorporating denosumab promotes bone regeneration via bone homeostasis regulation

Repair of large bone defects remains to be clinically challenging, yet current bone repair strategies focus on optimizing the osteogenic capacity of bone grafts, while the role of osteoclasts in bone regeneration has been largely ignored. Herein, we designed a injectable self-curing bone grafting paste capable of regulating both anabolic/catabolic activities during bone healing by immobilizing the RANKL inhibitor denosumab on dermal-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) microfibres, which were then incorporated into an injectable paste via a hydration reaction between β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) and calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH). The incorporation of ECM microfibres not only serves as a sustained-release denosumab carrier to inhibit osteoclastogenesis but also improves the mechanical properties of the resulting composite by increasing the interaction between the organic and inorganic phases. In vitro, calcium supply from the composite along with ECM enhanced osteogenic differentiation of BMSC while release of denosumab effectively inhibits osteoclast fusion and alleviate osteoclastic activity. In vivo, it was observed that CSH/CP@ECM-Deno significantly reduced the number of osteoclasts, slowed down the process of bone resorption, and accelerated collagen deposition to promote new bone generation. These results suggest that modulation of osteoclastogenesis by interfering with bone homeostasis may be an effective bone repair strategy.

Synthesis, monomer conversion, and mechanical properties of polylysine based dental composites

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to synthesize a new bioactive and antibacterial composite by incorporating reactive calcium phosphate and antibacterial polylysine into a resin matrix and evaluate the effect of these fillers on structural analysis, degree of monomer conversion, mechanical properties, and bioactivity of these newly developed polypropylene based dental composites. MethodologyStock monomers were prepared by mixing urethane dimethacrylate and polypropylene glycol dimethacrylate and combined with 40 wt% silica to make experimental control (E-C). The other three experimental groups contained a fixed percentage of silica (40 wt%), monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, and β-tri calcium phosphate (5 wt% each) with varying amounts of polylysine (PL). These groups include E-CCP0 (0 wt% PL), E-CCP5 (5 wt% PL) and E-CCP10 (10 wt% PL). The commercial control used was Filtek™ Z250 3M ESPE. The degree of conversion was assessed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Compressive strength and Vicker’s micro hardness testing were evaluated after 24 h of curing the samples. For bioactivity, prepared samples were placed in simulated body fluid for 0, 1, 7, and 28 days and were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). SPSS 23 was used to analyze the data and one-way ANOVA and post hoc tukey’s test were done, where the significant level was set ≤0.05. ResultsGroup E-C showed better mechanical properties than other experimental and commercial control groups. Group E-C showed the highest degree of conversion (72.72 ± 1.69%) followed by E-CCP0 (72.43 ± 1.47%), Z250 (72.26 ± 1.75%), E-CCP10 (71.07 ± 0.19%), and lowest value was shown by E-CCP5 (68.85 ± 7.23%). In shear bond testing the maximum value was obtained by E-C. The order in decreasing value of bond strength is E-C (8.13 ± 3.5 MPa) > Z250 (2.15 ± 1.1 MPa) > E-CCP10 (2.08 ± 2.1 MPa) > E-CCP5 (0.94 ± 0.8 MPa) > E-CCP0 (0.66 ± 0.2 MPa). In compressive testing, the maximum strength was observed by commercial control i.e., Z250 (210.36 ± 18 MPa) and E-C (206.55 ± 23 MPa), followed by E-CCP0 (108.06 ± 19 MPa), E-CCP5 (94.16 ± 9 MPa), and E-CCP10 (80.80 ± 13 MPa). The maximum number of hardness was shown by E-C (93.04 ± 8.23) followed by E-CCP0 (38.93 ± 9.21) > E-CCP10 (35.21 ± 12.31) > E-CCP5 (34.34 ± 12.49) > Z250 (25 ± 2.61). SEM images showed that the maximum apatite layer as shown by E-CCP10 and the order followed as E-CCP10 > E-CCP5 > E-CCP0 >Z250> E-C. ConclusionThe experimental formulation showed an optimal degree of conversion with compromised mechanical properties when the polylysine percentage was increased. Apatite layer formation and polylysine at the interface may result in remineralization and ultimately lead to the prevention of secondary caries formation.

Effects of Novel Dental Composites on Streptococcus mutans Biofilms.

With the phase-out of amalgam and the increase in minimally invasive dentistry, there is a growing need for high-strength composite materials that can kill residual bacteria and promote tooth remineralization. This study quantifies how antibacterial polylysine (PLS) and re-mineralizing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) affect Streptococcus mutans biofilms and the strength of dental composites. For antibacterial studies, the MCPM-PLS filler percentages were 0-0, 8-4, 12-6, and 16-8 wt% of the composite filler phase. Composite discs were immersed in 0.1% sucrose-supplemented broth containing Streptococcus mutans (UA159) and incubated in an anaerobic chamber for 48 h. Surface biomass was determined by crystal violet (CV) staining. Growth medium pH was measured at 24 and 48 h. Biofilm bacterial viability (CFU), exo-polysaccharide (water-soluble glucan (WSG) and water-insoluble glucan (WIG)), and extracellular DNA (eDNA) were quantified. This was by serial dilution plate counting, phenol-sulfuric acid microassay, and fluorometry, respectively. The biaxial flexural strengths were determined after water immersion for 1 week, 1 month, and 1 year. The MCPM-PLS wt% were 8-4, 8-8, 16-4 and 16-8. The normalized biomass, WSG, and WIG showed a linear decline of 66%, 64%, and 55%, respectively, as the PLS level increased up to 8%. The surrounding media pH (4.6) was all similar. A decrease in bacterial numbers with the 12-6 formula and a significant reduction with 16-8 compared to the 0-0 formulation was observed. The eDNA concentrations in biofilms formed on 12-6 and 16-8 formulations were significantly less than the 0-0 control and 8-4 formulations. Doubling MCPM and PLS caused a 14 and 19% reduction in strength in 1 week, respectively. Average results were lower at 1 month and 1 year but affected less upon doubling MCPM and PLS levels. Moreover, a 4% PLS may help to reduce total biomass and glucan levels in biofilms on the above composites. Higher levels are required to reduce eDNA and provide bactericidal action, but these can decrease early strength.

Synthesis of High‐Purity Monocalcium Phosphate Monohydrate from Crab Shell Waste

AbstractWaste crab shells (CS) have the potential to mineralize CO2, yielding precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) powder feedstock for use in the synthesis of monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) in an acidic condition by partial neutralization of phosphoric acid at 90 °C and varying times (30–120 min), followed by evaporation of the water at 100 °C. The PCC and MCPM products were analyzed using X‐ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X‐ray method. After 120 min of stirring, the pure MCPM revealed uniform particle sizes from 1 to 3 μm. The presented MCPM synthesis using the PCC powder precursor may assist in developing a large‐scale MCPM industry while recycling a considerable quantity of CS waste.

Assessment of physical/mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of dual-cured resin cements containing Sr-bioactive glass nanoparticles and calcium phosphate.

The aim was to develop dual-cured resin cements containing Sr-bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr-BGNPs; 5 or 10 wt%) and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM; 3 or 6 wt%). Effects of additives on degree of monomer conversion (DC), biaxial flexural strength/modulus, shear bond strength (SBS), mass/volume change, color stability, ion release, and cytotoxicity were examined. Controls included material without reactive fillers and Panavia SA Plus (PV). Experimental cements showed higher DC than PV regardless of light activation (p<0.05). Mean SBS and color stability were comparable between experimental cements and PV. Cell viability upon the exposure to sample extracts of experimental cements was 80%-92%. High additive concentrations led to lower strength and modulus than PV (p<0.05). The additives increased mass change, reduced color stability, and promoted ion release. The experimental resin cements demonstrated acceptable mechanical/chemical properties and cytotoxicity. The additives reduced the strength but provided ion release, a desirable action to prevent recurrent caries.

Rapid synthesis of monocalcium phosphate using calcium carbonate extracted from green mussel shells and phosphoric acid solution

Ca-source of green mussel shells (Perna-Viridis) recovered into precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) powders via a calcination-dissolution-precipitation pathway is a prospective feedstock for the rapid synthesis of monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM). In the study, a potential aqueous crystallization process was implemented for MCPM synthesis by blending PCC powders with vaterite (55.20 wt %) and calcite (44.80 wt%) in strongly phosphoric acid with a molarity of 85% (w/w) and varying amounts of water (2–6 mL), followed by rapid evaporation and drying. The resulting product contained at least 90 wt % MCPM and minor monetite according to XRD and FTIR analyses. The morphology of the MCPM product is a prismatic-like shape with grain sizes ranging from 3 to 9 μm, as observed using SEM techniques. DTA/DTG/TG analysis confirms the stability of MCPM products at temperatures up to 100 °C providing benefits for food industries and communities as a stable food additive commodity.

Chemical, structural and cytotoxicity characterisation of experimental fluoride-doped calcium phosphates as promising remineralising materials for dental applications.

This study aimed at evaluating the cytotoxicity, chemical and structural properties of experimental fluoride-doped calcium-phosphates as potential remineralising materials for dental applications. Experimental calciumphosphates were formulated using β-tricalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, calcium hydroxide, and different concentrations of calcium/sodium fluoride salts [(5wt%: VSG5F), (10wt%: VSG10F), (20wt%: VSG20F)]. A fluoride-free calciumphosphate (VSG) was used as control. Each tested material was immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF), (24h, 15 and 30 days) to assess their ability to crystallise into apatite-like. Cumulative fluoride release was assayed up to 45 days. Moreover, each powder was placed into a medium containing human dental pulp stem cells (200mg/mL) and their cytotoxicity was analysed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay (24h, 48h and 72h incubation). These latter results were statistically analysed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). All the experimental VSG-F materials produced fluoride-containing apatite-like crystals after SBF immersion. VSG20F presented prolonged release of fluoride ions into the storage media (45d). VSG, VSG10F and VSG20F showed a significant cytotoxicity at dilution of 1:1, while at 1:5, only VSG and VSG20F demonstrated a reduction in cell viability. At lower dilutions (1:10, 1:50 and 1:100) all specimens showed no significant toxicity to hDPSCs, but an increase in cell proliferation. The experimental fluoride-doped calcium-phosphates are biocompatible and possess a clear ability to evoke fluoride-containing apatite-like crystallisation. Hence, they may be promising remineralising materials for dental applications.

Ceramic Materials in Na2O-CaO-P2O5 System, Obtained via Heat Treatment of Cement-Salt Stone Based on Powder Mixture of Ca3(C6H5O7)2∙4H2O, Ca(H2PO4)2∙H2O and NaH2PO4

Ceramic materials in Na2O-CaO-P2O5 system were obtained by firing cement-salt stone made from pastes based on powder mixtures including calcium citrate tetrahydrate Ca3(C6H5O7)2∙4H2O, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) Ca(H2PO4)2∙H2O and/or sodium dihydrogen phosphate NaH2PO4. The phase composition of the obtained samples of cement-salt stone after adding water, hardening and drying included brushite CaHPO4∙2H2O, monetite CaHPO4 and also unreacted Ca3(C6H5O7)2∙4H2O, Ca(H2PO4)2∙H2O and/or NaH2PO4. The phase composition of ceramics in Na2O-CaO-P2O5 system obtained by firing cement-salt stone was formed due to thermal conversion of hydrated salt and heterophase reactions between components presented in samples during firing. The phase composition of ceramic samples based on powder mixture of Ca3(C6H5O7)2∙4H2O and Ca(H2PO4)2∙H2O after firing at 900 °C included β-calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) β-Ca2P2O7. The phase composition of ceramic samples based on powder mixture of Ca3(C6H5O7)2∙4H2O, and NaH2PO4 after firing at 900 °C included β-sodium rhenanite β-CaNaPO4. The phase composition of ceramic samples based on powder mixture of Ca3(C6H5O7)2∙4H2O, Ca(H2PO4)2∙H2O and NaH2PO4 after firing at 900 °C included β-Ca2P2O7, β-CaNaPO4, double calcium-sodium pyrophosphate Na2CaP2O7, and Na-substituted tricalcium phosphate Сa10Na(PO4)7. Obtained ceramic materials in Na2O-CaO-P2O5 system including biocompatible and biodegradable phases could be important for treatments of bone tissue defects by means of approaches of regenerative medicine.

Assessment of Physical/Mechanical Performance of Dental Resin Sealants Containing Sr-Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles and Calcium Phosphate.

The aim of this study was to assess the chemical/mechanical properties of ion-releasing dental sealants containing strontium-bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr-BGNPs) and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM). Two experimental sealants, TS1 (10 wt% Sr-BGNPs and 2 wt% MCPM) and TS2 (5 wt% Sr-BGNPs and 4 wt% MCPM), were prepared. Commercial controls were ClinproXT (CP) and BeautiSealant (BT). The monomer conversion (DC) was tested using ATR−FTIR (n = 5). The biaxial flexural strength (BFS) and modulus (BFM) were determined (n = 5) following 24 h and 7 days of immersion in water. The Vickers surface microhardness (SH) after 1 day in acetic acid (conc) versus water was tested (n = 5). The bulk and surface calcium phosphate precipitation in simulated body fluid was examined under SEM-EDX. The ion release at 4 weeks was analyzed using ICP-MS (n = 5). The DC after 40 s of light exposure of TS1 (43%) and TS2 (46%) was significantly lower than that of CP (58%) and BT (61%) (p < 0.05). The average BFS of TS1 (103 MPa), TS2 (123 MPa), and BT (94 MPa) were lower than that of CP (173 MPa). The average BFM and SH of TS1 (2.2 GPa, 19 VHN) and TS2 (2.0 GPa, 16 VHN) were higher than that of CP (1.6 GPa, 11 VHN) and BT (1.3 GPa, 12 VHN). TS1 showed higher Ca, P, and Sr release than TS2. Bulk calcium phosphate precipitation was detected on TS1 and TS2 suggesting some ion exchange. In conclusion, the DC of experimental sealants was lower than that of commercial materials, but their mechanical properties were within the acceptable ranges. The released ions may support remineralizing actions.

The effect of Cu2+ doping in β-tricalcium phosphate on the hydration mechanism of a brushite cement

Brushite cements show excellent biocompatibility and are therefore an often-used material for bone repair. However, methods to prevent inflammations after surgery are needed. As Cu2+ was proven to provide antibacterial properties, as well as other application relevant features, it is a promising additive. Concerning these factors, a brushite cement containing Cu2+-doped β-tricalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, and phytic acid as setting retarder was investigated with powder and in situ X-ray diffraction, isothermal heat flow calorimetry, in situ 1H-time domain – nuclear magnet resonance, and pore solution analysis. The influence of Cu2+ ions on the hydration kinetics of the brushite cement and the locations of the Cu2+ ions after completion of the hydration were the main questions of interest. Heat flow calorimetry showed a significant retardation and deceleration of the hydration with increasing Cu2+ content in β-tricalcium phosphate. This effect can be directly correlated to the Cu2+ ions, as it was also shown for cements without phytic acid. X-ray diffraction showed brushite as main hydrate phase. Additionally, Cu2+-doped cements formed a hydrate phase not assignable by X-ray diffraction, which is assumed to be Cu2+ containing. Furthermore, Cu2+ was detected in the pore solution after the hydration, and no signs of Cu2+ incorporation in the crystal structure of brushite were found.

Use of Monocalcium Phosphate Monohydrate for Chemical Immobilization of Heavy Metals Ions in Copper Smelting Slags

Monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) with chemical formula of Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O is a water-soluble and powerful agent for metal ion immobilization (removal) in soil and water. The use of MCPM can, therefore, be considered as an innovative and effective way to remove the leachable heavy metals from copper smelting slag. This study aims to (1) characterize copper smelting slag and perform the batch precipitation tests using MCPM, (2) analyze the treated copper smelting slag (residue) by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and (3) elucidate the mechanism of MCPM on leachable heavy metal removal from slag.The experimental results demonstrated that MCPM effectively removes Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn metal ions from copper smelting slag under different MCPM concentrations and reaction times. In addition, the XRD analysis reveals the formation of insoluble metal phosphates such as Cd3(PO4)2, Cu2(PO4)2OH, Fe3(PO4)2, Mn3(PO4)2, Pb3(PO4)2 and Zn3(PO4)2 in the residue of copper smelting slag.

Formation of octacalcium phosphate in the interaction of calcium carbonate and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate under galvanostatic conditions

The calcium phosphate composite octacalcium phosphate / calcite was obtained at pH 5–7 from the CaCO3/Ca(H2PO4)2 aqueous suspension in a galvanostatic mode at a current density of 20 mA/cm2 for 20 min. Drying at 80 °C without the precipitate maturation stage led to a powder formation consisting of brushite, calcite and a small amount of octacalcium phosphate. Prolonged maturation in air for 2 months led to the hydrolytic transformation of brushite into octacalcium phosphate stabilized by calcite. The use of electric current made it possible to increase the amount of octacalcium phosphate in the composite powder with the morphology of lamellar rosettes. Calcination at 800 °C of the composite powders led to the formation of α/β-tricalcium phosphate, β-calcium pyrophosphate, hydroxyapatite, and calcium oxide.

Biocompatibility of Ceramic Materials in Ca2P2O7–Ca(PO3)2 System Obtained via Heat Treatment of Cement-Salt Stone

Biocompatibility of ceramic materials in Ca2P2O7-Ca(PO3)2 system was investigated using different methods, including in vitro and in vivo tests. Ceramic materials in the Ca2P2O7-Ca(PO3)2 system were obtained by annealing cement-salt stone based on powder mixtures of calcium citrate tet-rahydrate Ca3(C6H5O7)2·4H2O and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O. The phase composition of cement-salt stone included brushite, monetite as a result of chemical reaction of starting components after adding of water. The presence of citric acid as by-product of chemical reaction, leads to increase the setting time of the cement-salt stone. Highly concentrated aqueous suspensions based on calcium citrate and MCPM powders providing content of calcium polyphosphate Ca(PO3)2 up to 20 wt % in ceramics were used for designing bioresorbable materials. The presence of an excess of monocalcium phosphate monohydrate makes it possible to reduce the annealing temperature of ceramics, which is associated with the formation of a lower melting phase of Ca(PO3)2. In vivo tests shown that obtained ceramic materials can be recommended for regenerative treatments for bone defects.

Effects of Sr/F-Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles and Calcium Phosphate on Monomer Conversion, Biaxial Flexural Strength, Surface Microhardness, Mass/Volume Changes, and Color Stability of Dual-Cured Dental Composites for Core Build-Up Materials.

This study prepared composites for core build-up containing Sr/F bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr/F-BGNPs) and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) to prevent dental caries. The effect of the additives on the physical/mechanical properties of the materials was examined. Dual-cured resin composites were prepared using dimethacrylate monomers with added Sr/F-BGNPs (5 or 10 wt%) and MCPM (3 or 6 wt%). The additives reduced the light-activated monomer conversion by ~10%, but their effect on the conversion upon self-curing was negligible. The conversions of light-curing or self-curing polymerization of the experimental materials were greater than that of the commercial material. The additives reduced biaxial flexural strength (191 to 155 MPa), modulus (4.4 to 3.3), and surface microhardness (53 to 45 VHN). These values were comparable to that of the commercial material or within the acceptable range of the standard. The changes in the experimental composites’ mass and volume (~1%) were similar to that of the commercial comparison. The color change of the commercial material (1.0) was lower than that of the experimental composites (1.5–5.8). The addition of Sr/F-BGNPs and MCPM negatively affected the physical/mechanical properties of the composites, but the results were satisfactory except for color stability.

Bioceramics Based on β-Calcium Pyrophosphate.

Ceramic samples based on β-calcium pyrophosphate β-Ca2P2O7 were prepared from powders of γ-calcium pyrophosphate γ-Ca2P2O7 with preset molar ratios Ca/P = 1, 0.975 and 0.95 using firing at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C. Calcium lactate pentahydrate Ca(C3H5O3)2⋅5H2O and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate Ca(H2PO4)2⋅H2O were treated in an aqua medium in mechanical activation conditions to prepare powder mixtures with preset molar ratios Ca/P containing calcium hydrophosphates with Ca/P = 1 (precursors of calcium pyrophosphate Ca2P2O7). These powder mixtures containing calcium hydrophosphates with Ca/P = 1 and non-reacted starting salts were heat-treated at 600 °C after drying and disaggregation in acetone. Phase composition of all powder mixtures after heat treatment at 600 °C was presented by γ-calcium pyrophosphate γ-Ca2P2O7 according to the XRD data. The addition of more excess of monocalcium phosphate monohydrate Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O (with appropriate molar ratio of Ca/P = 1) to the mixture of starting components resulted in lower dimensions of γ-calcium pyrophosphate (γ-Ca2P2O7) individual particles. The grain size of ceramics increased both with the growth in firing temperature and with decreasing molar ratio Ca/P of powder mixtures. Calcium polyphosphate (t melt = 984 °C), formed from monocalcium phosphate monohydrate Ca(H2PO4)2⋅H2O, acted similar to a liquid phase sintering additive. It was confirmed by tests in vitro that prepared ceramic materials with preset molar ratios Ca/P = 1, 0.975, and 0.95 and phase composition presented by β-calcium pyrophosphate β-Ca2P2O7 were biocompatible and could maintain bone cells proliferation.

Investigating triple superphosphate for lead removal from aqueous solutions

The aim of this research is to investigate monocalcium phosphate monohydrate [Ca(H2PO4)2. H2O] also called triple superphosphate (TSP) for the removal of lead (Pb) from aqueous solutions. In this study, TSP was selected amongst various phosphate-based materials and fertilizers to act as the source of orthophosphate (PO4 3-) which is a powerful tool for metal fixation in soil and water. Thermodynamic equilibrium dissolution-precipitation relationships for the systems of Pb-H2O and Pb-PO4 3--H2O were drawn with the aid of Eh-pH stability diagrams to determine the predominance areas of different species. The lead phosphate compounds, identified through the stability area diagrams, were verified with the batch precipitation tests performed with standard solutions of lead and TSP at different conditions. It was observed that, depending upon solution conditions, TSP can precipitate 99.9% of the lead from the solution. Lead precipitates, analyzed by x-ray diffraction, showed the formation of lead phosphate compounds. The mechanism of TSP for the removal of lead from aqueous solutions is discussed.

Формирование биомиметического апатита на кальцийфосфатной пенокерамике в концентрированной модельной среде

By firing polyurethane foam templates (“STR” brand, 12 pores per cm, China) with a porosity of ~ 65 % at 1200 °С, an open-pore calcium phosphate foam ceramics was obtained using a highly concentrated suspension based on synthetic hydroxyapatite, heat-treated at 800 °С, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate and 0.8 % polyvinyl alcohol. The resulting calcium phosphate foam ceramics after modification in the SBF (Simulated Body Fluid) solution concentrated 5 times (SBF×5) consisted of β-tricalcium phosphate, β-calcium pyrophosphate and biomimetic apatite, had a porosity of 53 – 59 % and a static strength of ~ 0.05 MPa. The formed biomimetic apatite, consisting of amorphous calcium phosphate Ca9(PO4)6 and apatite tricalcium phosphate Ca9HPO4(PO4)5OH, crystallizes into β-tricalcium phosphate at 1200 °С. Calcium phosphate foam ceramics modified with biomimetic apatite, after soaking in 5 % hydroxyapatite gel and SBF×5, which simulating a bone defect in vitro, in parallel with the formation of biomimetic apatite, is partially destroyed, which confirmed its high bioactivity and degradation.
