Molybdenum Concentrations in Tissues of Rainbow Trout (Salmo gairdneri) and Kokanee Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) from Waters Differing Widely in Molybdenum Content

Concentrations of molybdenum in tissues of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) from three waters increased only slightly with increase in molybdenum concentration of the water. Fish from high (300 ppb) molybdenum water had mean concentrations of 13–332 ppb on a wet-weight basis; those from low (6 ppb) molybdenum water, 10–146 ppb; and those from trace molybdenum water, 5–118 ppb. Rainbow trout exhibited generally higher molybdenum concentrations than did kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in high molybdenum water. A possible plateau mechanism concerning molybdenum accumulation by salmonids is discussed.

AbstractMolybdenum accumulation by forage plants was affected by its concentration in a neutral soil, by plant species, and by depth to water table. Accumulation by Medicago sativa L. and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. increased 5.2 and 3.5 ppm, respectively, for each kg/ha Mo added to the soil.Molybdenum accumulation varied significantly among the 25 forages tested. Legumes generally accumulated more Mo than grasses did. Forage from Lotus sp. had the highest concentration of Mo, and Trifolium sp. ranked next in accumulation of this element. Twelve grasses and Carex sp. are classified as low Mo accumulators.Depth to water table was associated with Mo accumulation during 2 of 3 years. Forage grown where the water table was near the soil surface contained more Mo than where depth to water table was greater.
