The total differential Raman scattering cross section for the 2331 cm-1 Q-branch vibrational transition in molecular nitrogen gas has been measured using 441.6 nm He-Cd laser. Absolute value of the cross section was determined by directly measuring both the laser power and the Raman power. The former was measured by use of an absolute calibrated opto-meter and the latter was measured by use of a Raman spectrometer and photomultiplier detection system that was absolute calibrated with a standard lamp.The measured cross section was 8.8 (±1.3) ×10-31 cm2 per steradian, per molecule, per plane of polarization for an incident light beam with a wavelength of 441.6 nm. Usefulness of He-Cd laser as a Raman light source is also described.
